Book Description
Straight and macho Taki partners with feminine and gay Goh to form an expert team of bandits hired by the police to steal from the mafia. Lately, Goh has been more interested in acquiring Taki's feelings than the usual caches of arms and drugs. Will Taki and Goh form a new kind of partnership? Volume one of Yellow begins with a brewing personal interest between Taki and Goh, though Taki is still unwilling to answer to Goh's desires. A gangster's jealousy leads to Taki's kidnapping, and it's up to Goh's cunning and charms to save him. Working solo, it's also up to Goh to find the drugs he was hired to steal while sidestepping a police conspiracy powder keg.

Sweet and Sad Story.......2007-02-20
This was a particularly sweet story. It caught me by surprise through a great deal of it. Yes, it is like a faster moving FAKE but I enjoyed this series just as much, if not a little more. Taki and Goh were perfect together and the ending was just absolutely perfect.
I came into this series very skeptical, believing nothing could top FAKE when it came to jack of all trades stories.
Give this one a chance. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Not worth the cost of 4 volumes.......2006-11-21
I have no idea what people like about this book. There must be something about seeing Dee and Ryo in bishie form that grabs your interest for the first book but once you look past that and at the actual art you'll notice this book aint all its cracked up to be.
[...] The first two books have your generic get backers/ legal drug/ jack of all trades half made up storyline.
The third book picks up when they start going into the characters pasts and get left with that ever so enticing cliff hanger. It makes you believe the finale will be a well thought out and well illustrated book. Unfortunately it comes across like something that was improvised frame by frame. The way it was executed was nonsensical and the art was as poor as all three books put together. It's not hard to compare this series to Sanami Matoh's `Fake' as the endings are almost identical. It doesn't even hold a candle, let alone a matchstick to Fake.
As usual I was fooled by the pretty cover art and overly embellished DMP synopsis/blurb. If you haven't read Fake I suggest you purchase that instead of this and if you have read Fake there are better things to spend your money on than Yellow.
A decent beginning.......2006-11-10
I've been unimpressed with Digital Manga's yaoi releases on the whole, but this one has promise. Volume 1 is a good beginning, setting up the sexual tension that will apparently run rampant in the rest of the series. Goh and Taki have the sort of working relationship you'd see in a buddy-cop movie, which is a lot of fun to read, and Goh's constant advances inject both romance and humor into the plot (even though they're usually followed by a death threat from Taki).
This book's weakness is that it doesn't know whether it wants to be a serious story or not. The majority of it plays out like a drama, but then Taki's responses to Goh seem to be trying for slapstick, which just feels awkward--I'm used to threats of violence as a humor device in manga, but when most of the story is drama, Taki's threats feel more sinister than they were probably intended to be.
But despite its weaknesses, the book's an enjoyable start to this series. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the volumes.
Perfect.......2006-11-06
Beautiful art AND a good storyline, YAY! I can't wait to buy the rest of the series ^-^
A Review of the Full Series.......2006-08-12
First a disclaimer. I am quite new to the yaoi genre. My knowledge of manga generally is also fairly limited. It is possible my opinions will not be representative of what a typical yaoi or manga fan will like.
YELLOW involves two partners who live together, and work undercover to snatch drugs from drug dealers. The men are rangy, athletic, and have nice cheekbones, but I find they lack something. Lots of people have compared this series to FAKE. Well, the characters in FAKE leap off the page at you, they are so full of personality. These guys stay politely on the page and look pretty. The art is a bit fluffy for my taste, but the action sequences are clean and easy to follow.
Story wise, the first volume is the weakest by far. If you actually like the heroes (I didn't) and feel that you would want to read on if the story improves, well it does. Volume 3 particularly threw a few nice curves, and included one genuinely funny and human moment. I personally wouldn't spend money on it, though.
From here on in there will be some Mild SPOILERS for the entire series.
The setup involves, of course, the gay partner Goh supposedly in "love" with the straight Taki and constantly trying to seduce him, while Taki insists that he only loves Goh as a friend. My problem was that I didn't get any real sense of love between them, platonic or otherwise. It is stated, but I didn't feel it, and Goh's behavior seems incompatible with real affection. Another problem is that Goh is a rapist, who blandly and unrepentantly admits to forcing sex on his ex-partner. We learn this shortly after a speech about the deep bond of trust that is necessary between partners, and nobody seems to have a clue that raping one's partner is as huge a betrayal of trust as there is.
Goh does NOT rape Taki, though, because he is supposedly in "love" for a change, and doesn't want to make Taki mad at him. But he didn't care whether his old partner got mad or not, so in that case he just forcibly took what he wanted. That we are actually expected to like this guy boggles my mind. He's not even evil in an interesting or psychologically compelling way. He's just an opportunistic bottom-feeder. Be still my heart.
Taki is more likeable, and he certainly gets put in an interesting situation, but he himself has the personality of a cute but overpriced designer toaster. His relationship with Goh is little more than resistance/pursuit. There are none of the nifty psychological undercurrents of KIZUNA or GRAVITATION, nor the goofy individuality of Ryo and Dee from FAKE. It's not nearly as funny as those manga, either.
YELLOW is set in a seedy milieu where everyone is pretty much a criminal or screwed up or morally compromised in some way. But the result is surprisingly insipid. The mangaka is less interested in the psychological aspects of her setup than in its fan-service potential (rape, prostitution, etc), and the one truly interesting thing that she does with the criminal-underworld premise is ruined by the copout ending.

A great manga.......2006-03-30
I first found out about this manga from one of the manga fliers at the bookstore... you know, the kind with the editor's picks and promos... but in it was an excerpt from this book, and it interested me. I went out and bought it not long after, and fell in love with it. It has a lighthearted "fun-ness" about it that I just love.... and yet, there's the part where Yoshimori tries so hard only to protect Tokine... they really are two great characters, and I can never wait for the next one to come out!
Demon hunting for youngsters.......2006-03-07
So, let's say your a demon hunter in training in Japan(God knows there's alot of them there!)but your sick of your grandpa's constant bitching about family tradition, and all you wanna do is be a baker. That's the premise for Kekkaishi by manga-ka Yellow Tanabe.
Yoshimori is the latest in his family's group of spiritualists. They have the power to set up barriers around demons, and either exorcise them to the afterlife, or just contain them in an attempt to ward them off. At the same time, there is a rival clan of from the same order whose latest disciple Tokine is Yoshimori's neighbor and schoolmate, although she goes to the high school part of the campus while he's still in middle school(they sometimes mix in grade schools in Japan). Most of the ghosts and other undead nasties habitat around their school because it was the site of a temple that was overrun with demons centuries ago. Now, both Yoshimori and Tokine's plans recieve payment from a mysterious benefactor for keeping the area clear of spooks.
Yoshimori gets help from a dog demon named Madarao who is indebted to his family's service for the past few centuries. Tokine gets help from a similar canine called Hakubi. Between the two of them, they have to deal with possessed teachers, pesky chef ghosts, and other things that might make campus life more like an episode of Buffy.
Kekkaishi is a pretty fair manga. It's not as gripping as say Bleach which is also about teenage ghost chasers. But it does have a pretty original story and interesting artwork. It seems to develop more and more with each chapter, so its worth looking into further volumes of.
by day junior high student by night yoshimori is a kekkaishi!!.......2005-12-30
kekkaishi is about yoshimori a kekkaishi (a kekkaishi is a demon hunter).well any way the manga was great and cant wait for no. four to come out!!the manga kekkaishi is also rated teen and in my perspective it shouldn't.kekkaishi has some vilonce but nothing offensive and there is demons but its not like there all freaky(like the one in the manga deatnote ugg)but its suitible for ages 10 through your age.i loved the manga and cant wight to see what yellow tanabe dishes out next!!i found this manga in borders i desided to try something else than what my friends told my to like naruto and shaman king thats how i found this manga.who knows maybe you could try something new like ohhh ummm let me see umm KEKKAISHI!!!!
^_^
kek- uh, kek- o? kek..........2005-08-01
why am i always first to review these books? oh well, this book is pretty cool, regardless of how freakin' hard it is to pronounce the name. it's about YOSHImori, a fourteen year old who has the ability to create barriers out of thin air. He becomes friends with this pastry chef guy, who died thinking about a really lame vegetable. (poor guy) And, of course what manga wouldn't be without a love interest? (hey, read the book. it could happen*eventualy*) Tokine is yoshi's 16 year old neighbor. She, like yoshimori, is a kekkaishi (barrier master)
and both of their families are feuding over who's really the true practitioner(don't know what that means, either)of the art.
this book gets a five outta five, because, for now, i can't tell whether it's gonna freakin rock (the highest compliment i know) or whether it'd just be ok. read it for yourself. if i didn't think it was worth reading, i wouldn't have reviewed it, so it's definetly a good way to spend an hour, if nothing else.

Book Description
This book celebrates the 200th anniversary of the historic Boston Athenaeum, one of this country's earliest and most prestigious repositories of books, paintings, sculpture, engravings, maps, photographs, manuscripts, decorative arts, and other artifacts of history and design. Acquired Tastes is the first in-depth, scholarly study of the Boston Athenaeum's collections and the manner in which they were gathered from the early nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. These topics are expanded and brought into sharper focus in fully-illustrated catalogue entries on a wide variety of objects that represent the breadth of the Athenaeum's holdings.
From its founding in 1807, the Boston Athenaeum's primary mission has been to provide collections that stimulate study, discussion, and debate on all topics of interest to the enquiring mind. In the Enlightenment of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries--the historic period that saw the founding of the Boston Athenaeum and similar organizations--it was believed that intellectual endeavors more easily germinated and thrived in an atmosphere that was spacious, comfortable, quiet, and aesthetically pleasing. Here, books and manuscripts could be preserved, logically organized, and made accessible, and utilitarian objects could be logically grouped with didactic ones for comparison and discussion. In this setting, too, fine examples of paintings, sculpture, drawings, and engravings fulfilled their traditional purposes of education and inspiration and--together with those from the world of science--stimulated imaginations, im proved morals, and refined aesthetic tastes. Celebrate the Boston Athenaeum's 2007 bi-centennial with this lavish tribute, published in conjunction with one of the most ambitious Athenaeum exhibitions ever mounted.

A fun treatise on the finer things in life!.......2007-01-30
In his undying wit, Mayle shares with us some of his field research on the finer things in life. Although really geared toward the gentleman reader, it is enjoyable for women to read as well. You'll learn some interesting facts on caviar, truffles, cashmere, and cigars as well as pick up on the potential pitfalls of overindulgence and gluttony. A quick and enjoyable read for anyone who is curious about the life of luxury!
Not Mayle's best.......2005-10-17
Leaving his haunts in the South of France, Peter explores the tastes of the rich and famous. Custom shoes, shirts, suits, second homes, stretch limos and all. A good read but not his best!
Hedonism at high level.......2004-03-26
I used to think as a big disadvantage to live in a small and poor country as Chile. However, Mr. Mayle's book demonstrated me that living in a "third world country" has some advantages. First of all, if you can afford some of the pleasures described on this book, meaning you're lucky enough to be within the 5 or 3 per cent of chilean population, maybe you're not a tycoon, but al least you're quite wealthy. That takes us to the second point... few riches enjoying pleasures means everyone else want to be like you, have the things you have, admire you and that makes you exclusive. In Chile if you earn 1.000 US$ a month you're middle class... imagine what happens when you make that 5.000 or 10.000 US$!!! Third point is vernacular. You can buy vineyards for a decent price (in many cases you have acquired it by inheritance), have 5 or 6 servants for 1.200 US$ a month, buy a very nice vacation home for 150.000 US$ and have a drink on a limo for 100 US$ the whole day. Caviar, cigars and truffles have the same high price worldwide, althought they are scarce and difficult to find in every corner grocery shop.
i want to move to france!.......2003-08-21
all of peter mayles books are great - and this is no exception!
Fun, even if you can't afford to do the things described!.......2003-04-28
The first time I saw this book, I was at the local library and the title caught my eye. When I saw that Peter Mayle was the author, I expected that I would enjoy it. I was not disappointed.
Whether you are rich, know people who are, or just enjoy imagining what you'd do with great wealth, this book offers an array of amusing possibilities. Mr. Mayle's best attribute as a writer is his ability to be witty without sacrificing erudition, and this book delivers on both counts.
My favorite chapter, without question, is the one about buying a vacation home; first because I know a few people who own second homes, and second because it's probably the only thing mentioned in the book that I'll ever be able to afford. Mr. Mayle offers an intriguing suggestion of how to savor the pleasures of a second home without any of the potential pitfalls. I haven't yet decided if I'll buy a vacation house or choose the Mayle method, but in the meantime, this book has been a great gift for friends and relatives who have taken the plunge.
In short, the best reason to buy this book is that it's fun.

Book Description
Omer Stewart is most noted for his career-long study of the Peyote religion. His mentor, A.L. Kroeber, instilled in him an abiding respect for cultural variation. Applying this fundamental principle to his work in the 1930s, Omer was surprised to find himself at odds with many notable colleagues. With characteristic self-confidence, he was undeterred in his effort to document the religion, defend its practice, and push open the door to applied anthropology.
In Cannibalism Is an Acquired Taste, Carol L. Howell weaves together taped interviews with Stewart; excerpts from his letters, notes, and papers; and recollections of family members and others. The result is a fascinating sketch not only of Omer Stewart as a person but also of his contributions to the field of anthropology and the academic and social milieu in which he participated. A must for anthropologists and anyone interested in the art of biography.
Customer Reviews:
Life story of Omer Stewart, a defender of religious freedom........1998-09-24
Omer Call Stewart was a man with many missions. He was among the first to study the use of the hallucinogen peyote in the Native American Church, and he was a stalwart defender of Native American religious freedom in many influential court cases. Omer Stewart was a student of Alfred Kroeber and produced important ethnographies of various Ute, Paiute, and other American Indians in the western U.S. He began his religious life as a Mormon and ended his life as an atheist who sincerely supported and respected people's religious commitments. He was a longtime teacher and practitioner of anthropology who embodied what it means to be a social scientist. Cannibalism is an Acquired Taste is his life's story.
Carol Howell's book on Stewart is a wonderful blend of family stories, good science, and the early history of American anthropology. Howell has compiled a series of interviews with Stewart and his family, pertinent letters from Margaret Mead, Ruth Bunzel, and other contemporaries of Stewart, and manuscripts that illustrate key points in an anthropologist's life. The book could have been a wild melange, but instead it wonderfully illustrates Stewart's many interests and wide range of involvement. This mix of views makes the book appropriate for a variety of audiences, ranging from people interested in anthropology to those simply interested in the life of one of the more interesting personalities of the twentieth century. Throughout, the blunt honesty and yet true humility of Stewart shines through.
For an anthropologist, Stewart's life is an alluring case study of how a professional comes into being. The passion and mistakes of a young anthropologist are clear in Stewart's early work with Julian Stewart and Alfred Kroeber. His journey from being a committed Mormon disciple to being a practicing scientist devoted to understanding the wide-ranging aspects of human culture is fascinating for anyone who has seen their own life change. From the 1930s to the 1970s Stewart constantly found himself in the midst of the key controversies and central areas of anthropological research. His life traces the change from Indians being non-citizens to their being active participants in national politics and issues. As an anthropologist, I can't think of a better or more fully described life of a student of culture.
For the curious lay-person, the honesty of this account of Omer Stewart's life is striking. He serves as a wonderful cursor tracing many of the changes of the twentieth century. From his travels as a Mormon missionary in the twenties to his discovery of anthropology in the thirties to his service to the Chief of Staff in the Pentagon in the forties, the first half of his life illustrates the radical shift in U.S. policy from isolation to world leader. The second half of his life cuts a course of social activism in racial integration, Indian religious freedom, and scientific debate. For Stewart, the practical consequences and rightness of an endeavor often weighed more heavily in his decisions than did anthropological theory or the opinions of his mentors. At times, we--the curious voyeurs--want to know more about issues such as Stewart's friendship with famous people such as Robert Redford--the Sundance resort is on the old Stewart ranch above Provo Canyon--but the focus on this biography is squarely on Stewart and the issues at hand, not on gossip.
I recommend the book highly to anyone who is interested in the practice of anthropology or in the active pursuit of Native American rights. Stewart was an anthropologist who did not shy away from a fight for people's rights. In this time when we often do not know what many individuals think or believe, Omer Call Stewart is a bright light illustrating how to live a life that is true to one's convictions. Carol Howell's book is a fascinating synthesis of sources that paints a picture of Stewart that is strikingly on target for those who knew him. Omer Stewart's wit was an acquired taste, but unlike cannibalism, it ultimately worked for the good of humankind.

Gripping and sick!.......2004-11-30
This one really creeps up on you. Tom Moran delivers thoroughly entertaining, genre-bending blend of humor, mystery, and--oh yeah--plenty of horror. Following the exploits of the comically inept, but lovable, John Smith, the novel deissorients and shocks its readers as it descends from comfortably humorous to grotesquely horrific. Be warned: this has one of the most graphic climaxes out there. With the exception of some poor editing by the publisher, this is an excellent debut.
Acquired Taste$.......2004-07-18
I found Mr. Moran's book to be interesting and very well wriiten. His writing style keeps the reader involved in the story. I had a hard time putting the book down. I am looking forward to Mr. Moran's next novel with anticipatication.
Acquired Taste$ by Tom Moran.......2004-07-07
This is a knockout of a first book and quite appropriately titled. You are pulled into the story from page one and you won't be released until the last page - I read it in one afternoon! There's a canine in this story named Unique and all I can say is You Go Girl! If this first book by Tom Moran is any indication of the level of his storytelling and creativity, I've got just one question - hey Tom, when's your next book coming out? Read this book - you're going to love it.
Frighteningly Intriguing.......2004-05-22
Acquired Taste$ is an exceptional thrill-ride of suspense and horror; an incredible debut. The author does an excellent job in capturing the reader's attention from the start. The story is strong and intriguing, which only adds to its already disturbing believability. An excellent read.
Terrific Read.......2004-05-17
This book was very intriguing. It covers a variety of genres, including horror, suspense, comedy, and romance. Mr. Moran does a good job developing chracters and proceeds to weeve a great story. It's definitely a book you can't put down until you're finished with it. Mr. Moran also uses the story to explain (presumably) his philosophy on money and it's ill effects on personalities. It was a great read and I look forward to more novels from Mr. Moran.
