Good reference from a RDBMS perspective.......2005-12-06
Although this is a well written book, for a book published in 2004 with the word "universal" in the title, I expected a little more modern treatment of metadata. This book begins with the statement that Mr. Marco is the "world's foremost authority on metadata". And although I agree that the book does have several good points, it does not appear to be a well-rounded textbook on metadata. There are however several well-written sections on the relationship between the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and metadata and the process of creating data stewardship teams. I was disappointed that the book does not even mention ISO/IEC 11179, RDF, OWL or any other modern tuple-based metadata technologies. The book does however mention how to use COBOL REDEFINES, DASD and other mainframe techniques to use metadata. The central thesis of the book is that metadata can and should be stored in a relational databases. The argument is that although relational structure are sometimes limiting, the prevalence of SQL skill sets make it practical to use relational databases to store metadata. The book includes a CD with ERWIN files and a 30 day evaluation copy of ERWIN. The book also suffers from some formatting omissions such as the fact that most of the data models listed in the appendix lack titles.

Uwe Borghoff and his coauthors address the problem of storing, reading, and using digital data for periods longer than 50 years. They briefly describe several markup and document description languages like TIFF, PDF, HTML, and XML, explain the most important techniques such as migration and emulation, and present the OAIS (Open Archival Information System) Reference Model. To complement this background information on the technology issues the authors present the most relevant international preservation projects, such as the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative, and experiences from sample projects run by the Cornell University Library and the National Library of the Netherlands. A rated survey list of available systems and tools completes the book.
With this broad overview, the authors address librarians who preserve our digital heritage, computer scientists who develop technologies that access data, and information managers engaged with the social and methodological requirements of long-term information access.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in buying real estate. It tells all the legal details and your rights that most books do not. It tells you how to back out of a deal, how to deal with encroachments and so forth. A definite need for anyone buying, selling or just interested.
