4 out of 5 stars Love it, but I feel like I'm getting ripped off.......2007-02-03

I love the Simpsons and these books are a "must have" for any serious fan. Plot summaries, gags, quotes, movie references, song lyrics, and "the stuff you may have missed" are all great. As I am rewatching the seasons on DVD, I love to pull out these books and refer along.

However, I am a little irritated at how much I feel Groening and company to be "milking" these books and the consumer for $$$$. The first book contained 8 seasons and was great. Now lately, all three of the subsequent books only cover two seasons? This latest book was released in 2005 at the beginning of the 17th season. Surely they could have made more of an effort to make the book more current and include the 15th and 16th seasons as well.

I'm a little annoyed that it cost me $12 to buy the first book in this series that covered EIGHT seasons, and yet I've had to spend $42 on three books which have only covered SIX.

3 out of 5 stars a little too much.......2006-03-23

These are long!!!! They get kinda boring and i think they just put in the info to fill the book.

5 out of 5 stars The simpsons.......2006-02-27

This book is perfect for any simpsons fan. You can follow the entire show with this book. The funnest part is reading along as you watch the particular show, and find the little stuff the book puts out

4 out of 5 stars Great Show, Good Book.......2005-11-06

This book is probably a must for any real "Simpsons" fan. It is full of summaries of each episode in the 13th and 14th season, as well as memorable quotes, interesting trivia, and things you may have missed. The book offers interesting character designs from different episodes, as well as on-going couch gags and what Homer likes ("Mmmm") and dislikes ("D'oh"). However, I feel some of these things are just placed inside to make the book seem more full and deserving of $15. But, overall, I was very happy with the purchase and, as I stated earlier, I feel it is an essential for a big "Simpsons" fan.

Viewers who acknowledge The Simpsons as one of the best shows ever to hit television are doubtless already proud owners of The Simpsons: A Complete Guide to Our Favorite Family. But since the show is still in production, that guide is no longer complete. And can you really live a second longer without a full list of last season's blackboard inscriptions? Simpsons creator Matt Groening and editor Scott M. Gimple come to the rescue with The Simpsons Forever! A Complete Guide to Our Favorite Family--Continued. It's an exhaustive list of all the episodes of the ninth and tenth seasons, including screen shots, dialogue highlights (Moe, packing for Hawaii: "Ukulele, pineapples, beach pistol, scandalously revealing thong"), and "Stuff You May Have Missed," such as the fact that the motto of In 'n' Out Ear Piercing is "If It Dangles, We'll Punch a Hole in It." There are also brief bios of guest characters (Señor Ding Dong hates Chevy vans), song lyrics (Marge and Homer's version of "Those Were the Days"), and a fond-without-being-icky tribute to Troy McClure. The truly obsessed will welcome the lists: every couch gag of the past two seasons, which actors do which voices, and every single time Homer has said "D'Oh!" for the past two years. The Simpsons Forever does a terrific job of catching the humor and spirit of a truly great show. --Ali Davis

4 out of 5 stars Good Source for Seasons 9 & 10.......2005-11-06

This book is one in a continuing series of reference for the show. In particular, this book deals with episodes from the ninth and tenth seasons of the "Simpsons." Here, we are given summaries of each episode, as well as the chalkboard and couch gags that came along, and interesting trivia about the episodes. If you own the first one (which I suggest you should, if you don't already)), I would definitely recommend this book, as well as to any person who loves the show.

5 out of 5 stars As the cover says, a complete guide...continued..........2005-07-14

THE SIMPSONS FOREVER! A COMPLETE GUIDE TO OUR FAVORITE FAMILY...CONTINUED is probably the best book on the Simpsons that I've read, along with THE SIMPSONS: A COMPLETE GUIDE TO OUR FAVORITE FAMILY. It includes, and I am taking this right from the cover, more characters, episodes, and secret jokes you might have missed from seasons 9 and 10...and then some! The book was created by Matt Groening and edited by Scott M. Gimple. It details each episode and even has extras: Do The Bartman; Deep, Deep Trouble; A Tribute to Troy McClure; Homer Says; Couch Gags; Who Does What Voice; and Songs Sung Simpson.

The book's dedication even reads:
TO THE LOVING MEMORY OF
SNOWBALL I:
YOU MAY BE GONE, BUT WE
ARE STILL FINDING YOUR HAIRBALLS
IN THE CLOSET.

My favorite sayings in the book are both on p. 33, "This Little Wiggy":

MARGE: Bart, it's too nice a day to leave Ralph in a closet. You boys should go play outside.
BART: But people will see me paired up with a doofus. You have no idea what that's like.
(Just then, a saw pops up out of the floor between Marge and Bart. It saws a circle, and Homer's head pops out of the floor.)
HOMER: Uh-oh.
(He pops back down.)

(Bart and Ralph open a door marked, "Danger--No Entry." They gasp, discovering an electric chair.)
BART: Whoa, mama! The electric chair! Smell that, Ralph? That's the smell of justice.
RALPH: Smells like hot dogs.

I definetly reccomend purchasing this book.

5 out of 5 stars Seasons 9-10, Complete.......2003-04-03

The first book covers seasons 1-8. This book only covers two seasons: 9 and 10. Each episode gets a two page spread, while many of the episodes in the first book only had one page. This allows far greater detail to be covered.

I keep all (currently) three books near the TV, and I'll review the pages for each episode before I watch the rerun. In doing so, it opens my eyes to a lot of the little details that I missed the first fifty times I saw the episode.

Essentially, this is the owners manual for seasons 9 and 10.

4 out of 5 stars Guide for Seasons 11 & 12.......2005-11-06

This particular book follows the eleventh and twelfth seasons of the "Simpsons." We are offered summaries for each episode, as well as chalkboard and couch gags, hard-to-know facts and trivia, and character sketches and designs from various episodes. This is a great addition to the first two books in the series, but seems to be filled with some extra, not very essential material, just to seem larger and worthy of the price. Yet, in any event, I think if you are a big "Simpsons" watcher, or want to know more about these seasons, this book is a great purchase.

5 out of 5 stars As the cover says, a complete guide...still continued..........2005-08-12

THE SIMPSONS BEYOND FOREVER! A COMPLETE GUIDE TO OUR FAVORITE FAMILY...STILL CONTINUED is probably the best book on the Simpsons that I've read, along with THE SIMPSONS: A COMPLETE GUIDE TO OUR FAVORITE FAMILY and THE SIMPSONS FOREVER! A COMPLETE GUIDE TO OUR FAVORITE FAMILY...CONTINUED. It includes, and I am taking this right from the cover, all new characters, episodes, and secret jokes you might have missed from seasons 11 & 12. The book was created by Matt Groening and edited by Jesse L. McCann. It details each episode and even has extras: Season 11 Production Art; Season 11 Character Designs; Season 12 Production Art; Season 12 Character Designs; Church Marquees; "D'oh"s and "Mmm"s; Itchy & Scratchy; Couch Gags; Who Does What Voice; and Songs Sung Simpson.

The books dedication even reads:
TO THE LOVING MEMORY OF SNOWBALL I:
YOU ALWAYS MANAGED TO LAND ON YOUR FEET.

My favorite sayings in the book are all on p. 104 - 105, "Simpsons Tall Tales":

A hungry, hungry Homer: "I haven't had buffalo in six hours. Marge, how about whipping up some buffalo sausage, huevos buffaleros, and some fresh-squeezed buffal-OJ?"

VICTUAL REALITY:
HUCK FINN (NELSON): I'm considerable hungry. We got any food left?
TOM SAWYER (BART): Hmm. Looks like we're out of cornpone, fatback, hardtack, fatpone, corntack...
HUCK: Any tackback?
TOM: Tackback?
HUCK: I mean, backtack.
TOM: Plum out.

COMPARE AND SAVE:
APU: One jug of whiskey, three plugs of tobacky, and some extra-strength opium. That will be two cents, boys.
TOM: Gasp!
HUCK: Two cents!
APU: Hey, if you think my prices are high, go across the street!
(He points at a $0.99 Store.)

I would buy this book for double the price!

P.S. - I also reviewed the first two books mentioned above.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2005-03-22

This book is hilarious, even better than the other two! Every series, the simpsons just gets funnier and funnier. I can't wait for the next book to come out and the next series to be shown on C4. If you like The Simpsons, you will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Simpsons Beyond Forever ROCKS!!!!!!!.......2004-02-25

Wow, The Simpsons has been around a LONG TIME! Right now, they're on Season 15 and the hit show doesn't look like it will end anytime soon. Of course, the episodes are kind of stupid now and some are losing interest. The Simpsons Beyond Forever covers season 11 and 12. The book is basically a really detailed episode guide. Inside, there is an Itchy and Scratchy Filmography, Homer's D'OHS! and his mmm's, and of course, the couch gags. But, that's only part of the book.
Also, they tell everything you need to know about each episode in seasons 11 and 12. There's the stuff Bart writes on the chalkboard, quotes from the episode, a summary and hilarious pictures. With 2 pages for each episode, they have plenty of room to fit anything they want on it. They even do a The Stuff You May Have Missed section for every episode. They have even more information for the Treehouse of Horror episodes. 4 WHOLE PAGES! The episodes aren't even that great!
The book, I wouldn't consider short, but not long. The first book(The Simpsons: A Complete Guide To Your Favorite Family) almost has 100 more pages than Beyond Forever! But, Beyond Forever has enough information that the few pages don't really matter.
You'll find EVERYTHING you need to know about season 11 and 12 in this book. Basically, it's amazing. I would reccommend this true work of art to any Simpsons fan. You could watch one Simpsons episode and still find this book interesting. Seasons 11 and 12 weren't included in the drop of ideas that has suddenly come into The Simpsons. The wonderful episode HomR lets you discover Homer's only stupid because he lodged a crayon up his nose as a kid. Plus, there's the crazy Trilogy of Error episode where it tells where Homer's finger was cut off by Marge and her brownies.
All in all, this book is AWESOME! Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best.......2004-02-04

So much classic humor comes from anxiety--think of all the befuddled "little men," from James Thurber to Bud Abbott to Woody Allen. One of the most breakdown-inspiring activities in modern life is buying a house, and Dave Barry is a battle-scarred vet of the whole real estate experience. This book is his therapy.

There's nobody better than Barry to mine this territory, and every page of Dave Barry's Homes and Other Black Holes yields up nuggets of the good stuff. Here are a few words from somebody who has been there, done that: "Most experts recommend that, for maximum effectiveness, you should look at forty-five or even fifty houses per day. Experienced home shoppers often reach the point where they can leap out of the real estate broker's car, look at a house, and get back into the car before it reaches a complete stop."

The book also discusses the myriad details of settling into your new life, including a section on making new enemies, dealing with contractors, and redecorating. "The main tip you will pick up is that if you want your house to look really nice, you do not necessarily have to have professional training or even a 'flair' for design; all you need is to have more money than the human mind can comprehend."

As always, Barry is assisted throughout by the illustrations of Jeff (Shoe) MacNelly, making Dave Barry's Homes and Other Black Holes a very funny book and excellent housewarming gift. --Michael Gerber

        Book Description

"Mr. Barry is the funniest man in America and we should encourage him."
--The New York Times Book Review
        THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME--EXCEPT IN A SELLER'S MARKET
At long last, Dave Barry, the dean of everything, lets you in on the deepest, darkest mysteries of life and answers your hysterical home purchase questions like they've never been answered before:
What's the best way to determine a realistic price range?
Take your total family income, including coins that have fallen behind the bureau, and any projected future revenue you have been notified about via personalized letters from Mr. Ed McMahon stating that you may already have won 14 million dollars. Then, multiply by something other than six.
Can you recommend a good mortgage?
There are several kinds: Fixed Rate, Variable Rate, and the bank's secret weapons, the Party Hat Mortgage and the Mortgage of the Living Dead.
How can I avoid spending money on do-it-yourself homeowner's projects?
Find a contractor. Their silent motto is "We Never Show Up." The Romans lived among the ruins. You must too.
Is there a secret to having a beautiful lawn?
Yes and no. If you fail to feed, fertilize, and water your lawn, it will die. However, if you feed, fertilize, and water your lawn, it will die.

4 out of 5 stars An Important Read Before You Make Life's Big Decisions.......2006-03-05

A year or so ago I read one of Barry's fiction novels called Big Trouble which was pretty entertaining so when I came across this non fiction book as well as Dave Barry's Bad Habits I decided to check them out. Of the two non fiction books Homes and Other Black Holes is certainly the more entertaining of the two with Barry giving more tongue in cheek advice based on exaggerations of the real world. In Bad Habits he was prone to telling more of his life stories than dishing out advice which to be honest they weren't that interesting, so this much thinner book with most of the life stories filtered out is much more pleasurable a read and is also a lot less dated too.

In Homes and Other Black Holes Barry comments on and gives advice on all of life's big decisions such as purchasing and selling homes, having kids, having pets, security alarms, gardening and buying furniture. Definitely an interesting and entertaining read. Check out his fiction as well.

4 out of 5 stars The funny side of home ownership.......2005-02-04

Its probably a good thing I wasn't drinking anything as I read this book, because I would have frequently sprayed the pages with my beverage if I had! Dave Barry takes aim at the trials and tribulations of home ownership, and hits the mark as accurately as he does any of his targets. This is funny stuff, best appreciated by those of us who have actually been there and done that. I had to read a number of passages to my wife, but her favorite was the bit about finding a pediatric group after moving. There is one piece of advice in here that I might actually follow when we finally are ready to move again: "Set fire to your household goods...and just walk away."

5 out of 5 stars How to make yourself miserable in your spare time.......2003-03-29

If you have ever moved, chances are that you never want to do it again. And Dave Barry is quite willing to remind you why moving is such a hideous experience, and why if you ever get the urge to do it again, you should lock yourself in a broom closet until your fit of insanity passes.

Among other things, Dave explains why your furniture takes so long to arrive (it involves primitive harvesters in the jungle) and why you will hate it when it arrives; what is and is not a good neighborhood ("I [heart] my Pit Bull" is bad); the horrifying thing called a mortgage; home repair and why you should not do it yourself; making enemies with your neighbors and their big savage dogs; garage sales; moving stuff out of your old house ("Tropical fish should be individually wadded up in newspaper") and into your new house ("... which will give your possessions an opportunity to scurry, giggling, back out to the truck so that you may carry them inside again").

Basically, if the idea of moving doesn't scare you before you read the book, it definitely will afterwards. Dave explains in horribly, humorously accurate descriptions, just what will happen when you try to move from one house to another. His viewpoint is only warped by the bizarre mindset of one who has tried to move and is still scarred by the experience.

So if you ever look around your house and think that you need more space, or a chance of scenery, have the doctor prescribe you something. But only after you've read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great before owning a house, a riot after..........2003-01-16

Look, how can you not love Dave Barry. The man is one of the touchstones of the '80s and '90s, standing among such comedic giants as PJ O'Rourke and holding his own.

This book cracked me up when I first read it as a non-homeowner, and cracked me up even more after I'd bought a house. While Dave has slown down slightly with success, this and his other early books (Babies and other Hazards of Sex, and Dave Barry's Guide to Marriage and/or Sex) are still uproarious.

Look, you need something to read on the john. This should be in the can at the Library of Congress.

5 out of 5 stars You will laugh until you cry!.......2003-01-13

If you've ever bought a home or you work in real estate, you will find this especially funny because it hits so close to....uh, home. And it's a short book too, so it'll be a nice quick read to fit into your busy schedule.

Time for Q & A with Dave Barry about that age-old question: "What do I need to know before I buy a house?":

Q: What's the best way to determine a realistic price range?"
A: Take your total annual family income, including coins that have fallen behind the bureau, and any projected future revenue you may have been notified about via personalized letters from Mr. Ed McMahon stating that you may have already won 14 million dollars. Then, multiply by something other than 6.

Q: Is there a secret to having a beautiful lawn?
A: Yes and no. If you fail to feed, fertilize, and water your lawn, it will die. However, if you feed, fertilize, and water your lawn, it will die.

Q: How can I avoid spending money on do-it-yourself homeowner's projects?
A: Find a contractor. Their silent motto is "We Never Show Up." The Romans lived among ruins. You must too.

Q: What do 1) "charming" and 2) "newly renovated" mean in house ads?
A: That's easy! 1) Rooms the size of nasal spray cartons, and 2) that the walls have been pretty well scraped clean in the room where the demonic beings from another dimension came through the TV set and caused the previous occupant's heads to explode.

I've been avoiding buying a house for years, and after reading this book, I am convinced I have made the right decision.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks Dave -- finaly a guide to home buying I understand!.......2000-05-17

Dave hits the nail on the head with this refreshing view of not only how to buy, but maintain, and eventually sell your home.

When I prepared to have a baby join our family, I turned to Dave Barry's "Baby's and other hazzards of sex" to help me make that adjustment.

Thank the maker that Dave was also there for me when we got ready to buy our first home!

If you are thinking about buying a home, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! It explains that it doesn't really matter who all those people are who show up at the closing...but that it's your responsibility to keep writing out the checks as long as someone is in line.

There are hillariously practical tips to searching for, buying, and maintaining your home. Dave presents hints and suggestions that will help you to appear knowledgeable while looking at houses, how to get into serious debt, and even about challenges you will face while redecorating.

He even has the audacity to suggest that it's possible to redecorate "for under $650,000." Come on Dave! Everyone knows that's impossible!

And when you are all done fixing up, being worn down, and you are ready to sell your home, he also presents hints on how to fool someone into buying your "black hole."

Great stuff through and through! 5 stars for humor and real life applicability!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for first time home buyers.......1998-11-27

One of the funniest books I've ever read or heard about. I laughed so hard that I couldn't continue reading !
