Book Description
The Real Books are the best-selling jazz books of all time. Since the 1970s, musicians have trusted these volumes to get them through every gig, night after night. The problem is that the books were illegally produced and distributed without any copyrights or royalties paid to the master composers who created these musical canons. Hal Leonard is very proud to present the first legitimate and legal editions of these books ever produced. You won't even notice the difference...the covers look the same, the engravings look the same, the songlist is nearly identical, and the price remains fair even on a musician's salary! But every conscientious musician will appreciate that these books are now produced legally and ethically, benefitting the songwriters that we owe for some of the greatest music ever written! 400 songs, including: Air Mail Special * Birdland * Bye Bye Blackbird * Caravan * Doxy * Fly Me to the Moon (In Other Words) * Georgia * Girl Talk * I Remember You * I Thought About You * In Walked Bud * The Jodi Grind * Just the Way You Are * Killer Joe * Little Sunflower * Mercy, Mercy, Mercy * Moanin' * The Nearness of You * Now's the Time * Old Devil Moon * Phase Dance * St. Thomas * Speak Low * Stardust * Tangerine * Tenor Madness * Watch What Happens * Whisper Not * Willow Weep for Me * Yardbird Suite * and more.

Real Book2.......2007-06-11
Great book, clear print, all the original chord markings, and now legal!!! what a treasure.
A must have.......2007-02-17
Another excellent book from Hal Leonard. I own both volumes. Easy to read. If this book was lost I would most certainly replace it.
What is this..........2007-02-09
So many of the reviewers here HAS to mention that owning the book is now LEGAL, because the publisher went through the trouble of licensing the songs, like a good corporation should. See, I don't have a problem with that per se, but when the publisher makes a stink of letting us know its LEGAL and I see some reviewers jumping on that particular bandwagon, I can't help but get this suspicion that something is afoot.
Like, you had the old (unlicensed=illegal) fake book for years and it really tormented you to know that the rights-holders (not the composers, note!) weren't paid their dues, but now, having the LEGAL copy you just feel so much warmer inside. Give me a break!
More good songs!.......2007-01-11
I had been playing from my decrepit, illegal real book volume 1 for more than 20 years, and only came across this volume 2 occasionally, playing with friends. Volume 2 brings great variety to Volume 1. There seems to be a higher concentration of standards and bebop songs, such as playable Parker and Monk tunes. The notation is clean, and although I am not a professional, I have not come across noticeable mistakes yet. And it feels good knowing that I am not breaking the law each time I play a tune in public + the price is right!
The real thing.......2007-01-09
What I love most about this book is its design. Veterans know that fake books are frequently a combination of handwritten, poorly-photocopied, cut-and-pasted, inconsistently-sized charts along with chord naming conventions that go all over the place (an E minor chord can read as Em, e, E-, etc. in the same book.)
The Real Book series (besides the advantage of excellent songs acquired with the proper rights) has a wonderful design. The staff lines are a consistent size; there is one song per page (or sometimes two pages, laid out so there's no flipping involved); chord naming conventions are consistent (it's "E-" throughout); and there is a lot of white space for a clean, clear look and room to pencil-in performance notes. It's easy and natural to go from one song to another without going through a lot of mental gymnastics and adjustments, as one would do in other fake books.
Plus, it's all done in a handwritten-looking font that gives it both a warm, handmade character and the feeling that you've acquired something surreptitious (like every fake book should be)!
The only problem is that the key is only indicated in the first measure of the first staff -- sharps and flats are not repeated at the beginning of the lower staffs, so it's sometimes a little hard to quickly remind yourself of what key you're in. Still, I'm having lots of fun with this.

Lucidly written, practical, and above all, MUSICAL!.......2006-01-07
This book is by far the best resource I have ever come across on jazz theory. I am something of a connoisseur of the jazz educational book market, since I am a voracious autodidact and aspiring jazz pianist. Mr. Ligon's work stands out as a labor of love from a man who obviously knows what he's talking about.
For one thing, there is an appropriate amount of text to accompany the musical examples. Some authors are so laconic as to be frustrating; they assume too much on the part of the reader, in terms of making mental connections and applications. They might give a musical example without enough accompanying text to help the reader generalize the principle being illustrated, or put the example into a context that helps the reader understand WHY the example is being given. Mr. Ligon, by contrast, gives many examples which are actual improvisations by known artists, and he comments, sometimes note by note or phrase by phrase, on what's going on in a way that I can only call illuminating.
Another of Ligon's strengths is that he is knowledgeable of the classical tradition, and gives examples and commentary which show that the principles of good melody are universal, from Bach to Bird. Moreover, he understands that, in the final analysis, melodic considerations take precedence over harmonic ones, which is a theoretical principle I fully agree with. In other words, voice leading and horizontal, temporal considerations give rise to vertical, harmonic associations. He is a master analyst of the melodic line. I have learned so much from reading him, and my soloing has taken off since I have encountered his books, because he gives me an undrstanding of broad principles which, once I understand them, are generative; they allow me to create new things on their basis.
One of the things he has helped me understand is the idea of harmonic generalization, that is, that one can choose to improvise over the general key area (usually the tonic triad with embellishments), ignoring the specific chords. The more usual approach of jazz educators, that of thinking about the specifics of each chord and improvising using the appropriate guide tones, Ligon calls "harmonic specificity", and he points out that an improvisor can choose either approach at a given moment, according to his artistic taste.
This book would be great for any aspiring improvisor, on any instrument. I also have studied parts of Ligon's "Comprehensive Technique for the Jazz Musician," which I recommend equally with his "Jazz Theory Resources" book (Volumes 1 and 2). There is an amazing amount of material in all of these books, enough for years of self-study.
Ligon has a great theoretical mind. However, he is definitely thinking of the actual needs of an improvisor; in other words, the information he gives is PRACTICAL and USEABLE. He is fond of the saying that there are only two rules in jazz theory: 1) Does it sound good? and 2) Does it sound good? This philosophy shows itself in his work. Every topic he goes into has made my playing "sound good", very quickly.
This book is for every thinking jazz musician's bookshelf. It has paid for itself many times over in musical pleasure (and gigs I might not otherwise have gotten).
Theory & Practice Married: as they should be.......2005-10-07
JAZZ THEORY RESOURCES
I recommend buying both Volume I and II. Essentially the tome was split into two rather than publish it in a single volume. The page numbering in Volume II continues from Volume I.
Volume I starts with a review of Basic Theory Material, Chapter 2 covers Rhythm, Chapter 3 Basic Tonal Materials and so on. The point is that `Basic' doesn't mean a superficial treatment: it means a comprehensive helpful analysis of things you must know.
Volume II carries on where Volume I left off: it is not `Part 2 Advanced': it is a continuation.
There is an immense amount theory and practical application in these two books. I came across them by accident when doing some research and bought them immediately. They are on my instant access bookshelf!

The best.......2006-10-24
The recordings are clean and beautiful .
Each song is presented twice : firstly the ordinary fake book presentation , then (much expanded ) a full transcription of Mr.Coates complete rhythm/chord-melody guitar 'take' on the tune . This followed by a transcription of the solo .
Since the playing doesn't stray too far from the 'original' fake book , its perfect for the student seeking to understand the 'how ' of working from fakebooks . There is no tab , but there are very many chord diagrams ( which really do match the scored chord ) . Layout and print quality are excellent .There are one or two very tastey photos of Benedetto guitars , here and there . Jimmy Haslip's basslines keep it simple , but without becomming dull : its a pleasure listening to the rhythm section on this CD . Better playing and recording than many commmercial releases !
chord melody solo's.......2006-09-02

A great continuation of this series.......2006-08-29
I've noticed that a lot of people don't like the "Jazz" manga. To be honest, I don't understand why.
The art is not your usual style with big eyed cute bishies but that's what drew me to this manga at first. The style is rather distinctive, the males are truly males and not girls in disguise.
And the characters are rather appealing too. There is Naoki, an impulsive, sometimes childish, sometimes harsh student. His lover is the man who used to be his doctor. Narusawa is older than Naoki. He is lonely and mostly sad man who doesn't have anybody. Until Naoki literally chases him down. They are the complete opposites and they need each other more than the air for breathing.
The second volume of this manga is set mostly in the US where Narusawa works temporarily and Naoki studies at the U. Because of a misunderstanding something terrible happens between them. I've noticed that a lot of people are not able to overcome the violent scene between Naoki and Narusawa but I think it portrays their characters excellently. Naoki doesn't think of the consequences of his actions and Narusawa on the other hand is desperately trying not to lose Naoki so he is willing to forgive him literally everything. It shows how possessive Naoki is and how dependent Narusawa became on him.
I know that the aforementioned scene is not pretty. But it happens more often than we would like to. But manga readers don't usually want to see this reality. They want to see a world full of pretty people doing pretty things. I admire the authors that they were willing to take the risk and put something like that in their manga.
I will definitely buy the next book because this is a great series. Four stars out of five definitely.
this series is taking a strange turn.......2006-07-17
I loved Jazz 1. There was true love, there were lots of emotions, and after I closed the book I had a smile on my face.
This one... not so much. I hated how the relationship developed (if you could call it development, I guess a better word is devolved, as... well, I do not want to give away spoilers.)
I hated the angstiness in this book, and it went WAY over the top with a very graphic sex scene that shouldn't have been there in the first place.
The book ends with a cliffhanger, and I therefor may be tempted to pick up book 3, but that probably will be it for Jazz.
Interesting continuation of the Jazz series........2006-07-16
Phew! If you thought the forced romantic situation in the first installment of Jazz was uncomfortable, just wait for volume 2.
Naoki and Narusawa have been lovingly reunited in America and live there together happily for the remainder of Narusawa's time there. Christmas rolls around and Narusawa wants to get Naoki a gift, so he asks his friends at work for some tips. This results in a very jealous and insecure Naoki who comes to believe that Narusawa is cheating on him, and he literally forces to older man into violent sex about it (bleeding and everything). It's a pretty heavy scene, and the reader is left wondering why Narusawa would accept this treatment and still love the younger man. Love can sometimes be a very strange thing. Both men eventually return to Japan, but a rift has formed between them because of Naoki's guilt associated with what he did to Narusawa. The two have to work through this issue. Volume 2 ends with a cliffhanger as Naoki is rushed to the hospital and Narusawa is left with the task of dealing with the younger man's family.
If you liked volume 1, volume 2 picks the story up very well, and holds the reader's attention and interest very well. If the nature of Naoki and Narusawa's relationship made you uncomfortable in volume 1, I would not recommend continuing the series, because it gets heavier.

An unusual feature of this book is the author's availability to answer questions on the material at the Muse Eek Publishing website, creating an interactive learning experience for the student.

Great Book.......2003-11-13
I think I own about every book for beginning piano on amazon's website. This is by far to best for learning jazz piano. Ms. Piket gives great explanations for each subject covered and lots of examples to help me understand what to do. I guess the best thing about this book is she shows you how to play the chords that go along with the Dorian scale and she gives the fingerings. I haven't been able to find this information anywhere. I also like the midifiles that I can download from the publisher's website. These files have really helped me understand through hearing. This has made a major difference for me. I highly recommend this book Ms. Piket seems to know the next question I'm going to have and answers it fully.
Product Description
Continues the dissemination of the information in Book 1 by introducing the concepts of melody writing and studies the jazz composition styles that are an intrinsic addition to the contemporary jazz composers repertoire. Also deals with harmonization and reharmonization techniques.

Great Modern Jazz Arranging Book.......2007-05-09
As always, Ron Miller is very thorough in his discussion of harmony in relation to melodic modes and scale sources. This book has opened up my harmonic language and helped bring a stronger sense of structure to my writing. For the intermediate jazz arranger, this book will help bring your writing up to the next level.

Cute and simple.......2007-05-24
I like this book because my baby loves lift-the-flap books and laughing. Each page talks about what makes the characters laugh, so we laugh together. It is also very sturdy, so the flaps will last a long time...smart!
Another Good Maisy Book.......2006-04-05
My 16 mo. old enjoys it, and the flaps have so far stood up to her-- never an easy job for any book. The bold illustrations are perfect and cheery, plus it's short and simple enough that she can finish it.
I had expectations it would make her laugh, but she enjoys it all the same.
