Book Description

Learn how these superstars invest, where they invest, what works--and what doesn't
Since people have been making money in the markets, investors and would-be investors have been fascinated with the money managers and traders who have extracted superior returns. In The New Investment Superstars, Lois Peltz examines fifteen of today's most successful investors by their area of expertise, including stock-picking, global macro trading, sector investing, and more. Readers will learn how these great investors approach the markets at a time when volatility is high and certainty low. From the thirty-five-year-old Lee Ainslie (Maverick Capital), dubbed the "Win-Win Investor" by Worth magazine, and Ken Griffin, the thirty-one-year-old who started his first hedge fund as a freshman at Harvard, to Lee Cooperman, long a star stockpicker at Goldman, we meet today's superior managers and learn how they do it.
Peltz reveals that these new stars are flexible traders who inherently understand that long-term wins come from recognizing that markets are ever-changing and that they must adapt. By reading about how they've succeeded and where they lost, investors will learn about market change, and how success is achieved.
Lois Peltz (New York, NY) was editor-in-chief of MAR/Hedge Funds, an investment performance reporting service, for eight years. She is now President and CEO of Investment Information Providers, an information services company that provides investment information services to the professional investment community.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Useful background detracted by gross errors.......2002-11-11

Contains useful background information and insights on managers, and the industry though it is of limited use regarding the strategies those managers use. Two really glaring errors (page 48 & 49 on incentive fees, and Page 65 on correlations - perhaps a misquote or a quote out of context) cast doubt on the reliability of other statements in the book for me. Consequently I recommend reading it, but with more than the usual level of skepticism.

1 out of 5 stars If you are looking for trading ideas, look elsewhere.......2001-10-12

This book contains an almost painful amount of detail concerning the organizational structure as well as the investor base of the hedge funds whose managers it profiles. Unfortunately, as far as actual trading strategies are concerned, it is a complete failure. It will tell you in which areas a fund is active, but give you excactly zero detail about the strategies and tactics used by its managers. Even some rather bad books I have read at least contained one or two ideas that were worth investigating, but I couldn't gain anything at all from this book. Also, some of the track records really aren't that impressive. Not really bad, but definitely not what you'd expect from "Superstars".

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Time.......2001-09-04

Very poorly written. Comments were too general. Offered little insight regarding reasons for the success of the managers. Best part of the book was the compilation of track records for each of the managers.

4 out of 5 stars A long awaited.......2001-07-11

complement to the John Train/Jack Schwager series of books on managers. This book measures up well with its well-regarded peers. Lois Peltz has collected interesting information on hedge fund manager, most of whom are unknown even to investment cognoscenti. They are in her book because of their stellar records, despite the low profile many share (due to strict marketing regs for these investment pools). For readers who want a peek behind the hedge fund curtain, this book is ideal. It captures the personalities and backgrounds of the managers, and it benefits from Peltz's analysis of commonalties and future thoughts on the industry. If you are investment professional looking to add a couple of nuggets to your repertoire, you might feel slightly let down (hence 4, not 5, stars). The eye opening aspect for me was the annual returns revealed for each of the managers. This information is not widely available, and the magnitude and consistency of the annual returns was amazing for several of the managers. The extent of and rationale behind leverage is explored as well. Overall, the book was excellent, and I was happy to add it to my extensive collection of investment related tomes.

5 out of 5 stars An Immensely Valuable Book.......2001-06-06

It is rare to be able to read one book on a complex topic and have it contain information of use to both the novice and the veteran. Lois Peltz has done it in regard to hedge funds...the most erudite of investment arenas. Whether it be basic information (definitions, tables showing manager spin-offs, industry disasters) or advanced (the irony of having the objective of superior performance over the long-term being measured in 90 day intervals), this easily readable and fascinating treatise delivers. From her overview of superstar managers (including the counter-intuitive observation that they're not in it for the money but rather because they love the challenge) to the side-bars concluding each that allow the reader to compare highlights, the profiles are enlightening. Specific insights on managers (Bruce Kovner's analogy of managing money to painting, Paul Singer's analysis of model and herding risk, to Raj Rajaratnam's requirement that analysts performing due diligence fax in a daily "What I've learned" or risk not being reimbursed for their expenses) provide enormous understanding of each manager. Finally, her own perspective, including highlighting the issue of manager capacity, offers unusual help in selecting/understanding managers. A must-read!

This book was so interesting it was a hit at my Grandson's party. The party of boys loved the information but also the activities it included to make learning basball history fun. Parents and other adults loved filling in on some of what they had either seen or experieced to add to the festivies. I recommend it very highly!

This book is a delightful and funny introduction to baseball. We read it to our 6 1/2 year old who loved it. It's a nice way to teach him about the game and some of the terminology.

Easy to read, presents material in a way that unlocks the concept in your mind.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have book for any sales professional.......2006-08-10

Our sales team read this book together and we credit this book as one of the most helpful sales books we found. Sales books like "Be a Sales Superstar" helped us go from one of the worst sales teams in a fortune 500 company to one of the best. Brian Tracy gives simple, practical tips that produce immediate results. This is a must have sales book! David Otis, Author of "Walk Fast, Talk Loud and Smile.

    5 out of 5 stars A summary of Tracy's 40 years of sales experience........2006-01-15

If you want to learn anything, learn from an expert. Brian Tracy has been in sales si nce he was 10 years old and is an established sales professional as well as arguably the best sales trainer in the business. His tape series The Psychology of Selling has sold nearly a million copies. Brian has trained over 500,000 sales people all over the world.

Be A Sales Superstar encapsulates the best of what Brian has learned. It is well worth reading again and again. Also recommend The Psychology of Selling and Advanced Sales Strategies by Brian.

People who have bashed the book obviously are not sales people or where in sales and failed after a short stint. I don't know anyone who is successful in selling who is not using these techniques and does not recommend Brian Tracy.

5 out of 5 stars The 21 Habits of Super Successful Salespeople.......2005-12-17

As usually overlook n egative reviewers and did that again before buying this great new book by Brian Tracy. What a shame that some people live such boring lives that they have nothing better to do than bash books they never bought or read.

Be A Sales Superstar is fresh and new. It is not the same as Tracy's 457 page Advanced Selling Strategies. How could it be? This book is less than half that size.

This book discloses the top 21 habits of super successful salespeople. Whether n ew or experienced this book canhelp you be all that you want to be in your selling career.

    5 out of 5 stars A Big Little Book.......2005-12-11

This book may not be a swelling 400 pages like Tracy's Advanced Selling Strategies. At 154 pages, Be A Sales Superstar is smaller than your average book but packed with useful information like presenting, overcoming objections, educating the customer, the AIDA model and more.

This book makes a great companion to Advanced Selling Strategies and The Psychology of Selling.

    Highly recommended.

Charlie Brown goes to a Sports Banquet with Linus and Snoopy in hopes of seeing his hero Joe Shabotnik. Snoopy gets reported to the Head Beagle by Frieda (those 2 never did get along!)for not meeting his quota for rabbit chasing. Later, Snoopy is elected as Head Beagle (but finds the job tedious) and gets nominated Rookie of the Year! Linus is bribed by his grandmother to give up that old trusted blanket (give it up, Grandma!). Lucy takes care of Snoopy when Charlie Brown is away on vacation ("If you were my dog, I'd fix you good!"). And finally, you'll get a sneak preview of It Was a Dark and Stormy Night!

          Book Description

Walter Payton was arguably the greatest running back in the history of professional football. A star for the Chicago Bears from 1974 to 1987, Payton rushed for a National Football League career record of 16,726 yards. Known to football fans everywhere as "Sweetness," he helped lead the Bears to a Super Bowl victory following the 1985 season and over the years established himself as one of the sports world's most popular and personable role models. Payton was beloved by his teammates, idolized by his fans, and embraced by business partners. He captured the heart of the Windy City with a graciousness complimented by a spirit of humility and a wonderful sense of humor.

Millions mourned in early November 1999 when Payton, a youthful 45, succumbed to cancer after a nearly year-long battle with various health problems. Even in his dying days, however, Payton maintained his dignity, a spirit of community charity, and a legendary ability to pull off practical jokes that would send friends and family reeling with laughter. Before he passed away, he reportedly also renewed his commitment to his Christian faith. His death on November 1 coincided with the day known as All Saints Day in many Christian quarters.

In Walter Payton, dozens of his contemporaries, former teammates, coaches, childhood and college chums, business partners, fans, and friends offer in their own words their favorite memories and anecdotes of this man they loved so much. Walter Payton is a warm, entertaining, and inspiring book about a man whose fame transcended the sport in which he competed into the widest realms of life itself.

              Book Description

Sometimes humorous, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, sometimes deeply sad and moving -- such are the biographies of fifteen Texas bad girls. Husband killers, run-of-the-mill murderers, whorehouse madams, prostitutes, gamblers, bank robbers, floozies -- each contributes immeasurably to a rowdy, ribald history that dates from the state's earliest settlers to yesterday's biggest news story.

              Customer Reviews:

              2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2002-05-06

Great potential for a fun, interesting read is often wasted in "Texas Bad Girls." The author has some fine story-telling skills, and some of the yarns are genuinely fascinating. Unfortunately, the author seems in love with his own cleverness, and ruins a good many of the stories by inserting distracting quips and jokes. The humor works sometimes, but too often it serves to mark this book as the work of an amateur, one step up from a vanity project.

The author appears to have done a great deal of original research, but explains none of it and cites no sources beyond a bibliography of older books and articles at the back. This, along with the wise-acre writing style, robs the book of credibility. I think Mr. Butts has potential as an entertaining writer of light history, and I'd like to see him set his standards a little higher.

              5 out of 5 stars Fun History.......2001-01-24

If you thought history couldn't be fun, read this book! The author's style is delightful, sprinkled with humorous and original expressions. Hope he's writing another!

5 out of 5 stars Texas Bad Girls Gone Good.......2000-12-13

This author has a unique and gifted way of taking simple historical facts and turning them into a wonderfully written "Texas tale" filled with humorous quips and folklore. Texas Bad Girls is a must read for those that love the wild days of the west but are willing to take a different ride down that dusty trail. The statement, "Stand by your man", is quickly dismissed as a simple cliche. These women were tough and real and they take you right along every step of the way. A great romp...and some of them were experts at romping! A fun read and a must read. Looking forward to the next adventure. Good job Butts.

5 out of 5 stars TEXAS BAD GIRLS.......2000-12-07

I KNOW THIS AUTHOR. HE HAS BEEN A DEAR FRIEND AND BROTHER-IN-LAW FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS. I HAD THE HONOR OF READING SNIPPETS,EXCERPTS AND ROUGH DRAFTS AS THIS WORK WAS BEING COMPILED. AS JIMMY TRAVELLED THE HIGHWAYS, BYWAYS AND BACK ROADS OF TEXAS, VISITING LIBRARIES,OLD CHURCHES,SCHOOLS AND COURTHOUSES, HE LEAFED THROUGH MOUNTAINS OF ARCHIVED MATERIALS,READ OLD NEWS PAPERS AND DUG IN BOXES OF JUNK IN SEARCH OF MATERIAL TO AUTHENTICATE HIS STORIES. THE TENDER LOVING CARE HE PUT INTO HIS RESEARCH IS VERY EVIDENT IN THE FINISHED PRODUCT. HIS DESCRIPTIVE TALENTS BRINGS EACH CHARACTER INTO FOCUS FOR ME. I CAN CLOSE MY EYES AND MENTALLY SEE EACH WOMAN. I'VE NEVER BEEN A STUDENT OF HISTORY, BUT PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN AN "A" STUDENT HAD HISTORY BOOKS BEEN WRITTEN WITH THIS MUCH HUMOR.

TEXAS BAD GIRLS WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH, MAKE YOU CRY AND MAKE YOU WANT MORE. READ IT ONCE. WAIT A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND READ IT AGAIN. IT'S BETTER THE SECOND TIME. I LOOK FORWARD TO JIMMY'S NEXT BOOK WITH EAGER ANTICIPATION.

I read this book the day I bought it. I thought it was a well researched, and was very well written. I enjoyed reading about the history of these women. I hope the author will write one about those bad Texas men to go with it. The author seems to have a flare for writing about historical events as if he was actually there. It was great.
