Book Description

During the last decade, we have moved, perhaps irrevocably, into the era of a global economy. Through its focus on human resource management and organization, The Global Challenge: Frameworks for International Human Resource Management, provides a broad guide on how to manage the process of internationalization, with a particular focus on the transnational firm. In this brand new offering, authors Evans, Pucik and Barsoux discuss the “people implications” of traditional strategies for internationalization and how such strategies get executed through human resource management (HRM). They discuss such important topics as: · how to manage expatriates from the parent country · how to go about adapting management practices to circumstances abroad · how to localize management · how to recognize and ultimately avoid obstacles in joint ventures · how to expand across borders through acquisitions · how to respond to the contradictory pressures of the transnational firm, where HRM has a critical role to play in enabling managers to resolve these paradoxes in innovative ways · how global competition is changing the nature of management and organization, even for firms operating in domestic markets. The book draws on practical examples from companies that have experienced the real challenges of international HRM. The authors carefully balance these real business applications with a wide scope of academic research.

2 out of 5 stars Overview on Intern. HRM but way too wordy.......2005-04-26

This book is a tour de force in international HRM and is therefore good for those who want an overview on the various problems modern HR managers face. But you have to dig deep to find concise descriptions of tools or any other recipes for how to deal with them. From the start until the end, I found the approach taken by the authors rather disappointing. It comes along like a textbook but doesn't reach the formal standard of a textbook. It seems rather casually written like a book for practitioners, but it is too wordy and not applied enough. The ideal target group seems more retired managers, who have time to read through the chapters. Yes, globalisation is a challenge especially in human resource management. But most of the readers are actually looking for more answers than this book offers. The book is full of "challenges" "the answer depends on what strategy a firm follows" without further elaborating.
On the other side, the authors seem to be very experienced and they know the litrature. They do not try to give easy answers to complex questions, which is good. Yet, they have not succeeded in writing an inspiring book that is rewarding to read. It leaves the reader behind puzzeled about what to do as a HR manager.
The book is not really an introduction into the main concepts of international HR, which renders it less useful for class. The authors often refer to specific companies and cases without explaining them in detail (e.g. "...a relationship such as between Nokia and TI"). Starting with one detailed case per chapter would have helped me (and students) grasping the main messages. For class, I would rather recommend Nancy Adler's "international dimension of organisational behaviour" and additional books about specific topics such as M&A, alliances etc, which this book covers as well. Though, I have not read the additional material supplied to lecturers for this book.

Book Description

In this bestselling work, Robert Barnes lays bare the Mountain-Valley Trading System, an amazing new system with intraday trading results so powerful and accurate that it convinces even veteran traders! Trading a single contract and entering and exiting the market on the same day to minimize risk, the system produced: $6,375 monthly gain in coffee; $6,062 monthly gain in the British pound; $2,525 monthly gain in silver; $5,600 monthly gain in the S&P; $4,025 monthly gain in the Japanese yen.

1 out of 5 stars high-impact nothing.......2005-08-19

When closing price goes up N times, buy. When it goes down N times, sell. Exit when profitable enough. If exited too early, re-enter. Use stops. Different markets are profitable in different time frames, from one-minute to hourly bars. This strategy is very profitable and has been tested on one month of data. If this sounds interesting - buy this book.

Alternatively, read this review again and implement it in your trading.

5 out of 5 stars Mountain/Valley Trading System.......2004-07-03

Basicly, this is a trend following system. It's designed to hang on to winning trades as long as possible and to dump losing trades quickly. It's similar to a trend breakout system, execept that you control, with two input values, when a valid breakout and a trend begins. It has money management logic built into it. I have created a Tradestation program based on this system which I use to automatically execute trades in Diamonds, Spiders, and E-minis. It's a robust system, works with any security, and is very profitable when the market are trending.

3 out of 5 stars 1 Technique Explained in Dull Fashion.......2003-01-04

This book was written in '96 and as such, Easy Language could have been included since it was available then. The system requires high maintenance observation (in 1 minute, 5 minute, 15 minute and 60 minute charts in each future discussed) that would require programming assistance in the background. NB Another reviewer states he has programmed this in ELA & offers his email address.

There are many charts which take up half of the book, but since most of the time the chart being referenced in the text is on another page, it's a hassle to jump back and forth. The writing style could cure insomnia.

As in Larry Williams' daytrading book, this book would have benefitted greatly by inclusion of Performance Reports with Profit Factors, ROI, consecutive losers and the like. In fairness to the author, he provides the results of all trades in a month period for the different time periods (1-minute through 60-minutes) for various futures including the DM. These could have been enhanced with profit targets, it was surprising to see better than potential $1000+ trades allowed to turn into losers.

Once the single system was explained, the various futures could have been presented with 1 time frame Performance Report and the best value, on successive pages.

Unfortunately since Barnes limited himself to 1 month of trades, there is insufficient information on those time frames greater than 1 or 5 minute charts, to determine the validity of the system. One needs a minimum of 30 samples and in many instances there are only 3 trades for the time period presented.

Better editing would have enhanced the value of this book in making it more comprehensible and capable of the system being confirmed as being viable.

VERY HELPFULL BOOK FOR THE NOVICE. QUICK DELIVERY

4 out of 5 stars Original thinking!.......2001-01-25

I used the system outlined in the book to develop a highly successful longer term system that makes very good returns with low drawdowns. It also recovers very quickly from losses. Enough said!

5 out of 5 stars This Book Launched My Career As A Consultant.......2003-04-19

First off, I know the author. Met and interviewed him often in Boston radio. But when he wrote this first book, it coincided with me leaving a major media corporation and launching my own business. I couldn't have done so without Jeffrey's sage counsel. This book should be must reading for any would-be entrepreneur as it lays out, step by step, how to build your firm and market yourself effectively to a network of clients and colleagues. Kudo's to Dr. Lant for taking me from $0 to a half-million a year as a sole practioner.

Jeffrey Lant is an amazing guy "who answers his own phone" in
Cambridge, MA. He is the most generous teacher of business
basics and advanced techniques that I know of...for any price.
The complete novice/layman can learn to be their own publicist,
and marketer most successfully with his books. He has written
a number of excellent business manuals. Its worth searching
his site to learn more about him and what he teaches.
He has helped my business succeed!

1 out of 5 stars Not So Great.......2000-09-14

While I liked this book better than the other Lant books I tried, I found that so much of Lant's information can be found for free on most good web sites. His books are big, but can be condensed into 1/2 the number of pages. Another thing about Lant's work is that unless you like pomposity, you may be turned off.

5 out of 5 stars Unabashed Self Promotor's guideby Dr. Jeffrey Lant.......2000-01-15

Any small businessman who doesn't have this this reference on his shelf isn't interested in selling products. Dr. Lant points the way to develop an effective program for promoting your business which is focused, effective and inexpensive. He shows you the indices for getting attention and then capitalising on that attention.

Dr. Lant writes in plain English and lays out his points in a very easy to follow fashion. His common sense approach is organized in such a way the small business person can literally "fill in the blanks" and produce a first class publicity campaign.

This book is a "must have" for any small business who wants more business!

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Lant is a marketing genius! Worth every penny!.......1998-12-27

Dr. Lant is a marketing genius! Worth every penny! This book is a MUST read if you plan on marketing on-line or off-line! Every serious marketer must add this to his arsenal!

      Book Description

No longer is intellectual property (IP) just a necessary expense for large technology companies. Competing and succeeding in today's marketplace requires an in-depth understanding of IP--its use as a weapon, as a shield, and as a monetizable asset. Yet in a world where fortunes can rise or founder on the strength of an IP portfolio, hesitation to enter this world still abounds. This book equips the business manager with a working, practical knowledge essential to creating and exploiting IP wealth. It shows investors how to evaluate IP strength and competitive value.

This is a good book on how to be cost effective in using Information Technology.

3 out of 5 stars Some Useful Information But Generally Too High-Level.......1999-09-04

This book was useful to me in certain respects: the information contained in it about data center and software development metrics (two chapters' worth) was valuable and timely. The rest of the book, however, was too high-level to be put to immediate use. The author also included far too many visuals. I found them distracting and not supportive of the text.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed - not up with the times.......1999-08-29

I have just finished reading this book and was quite disappointed. The book is not sufficiently up-to-date and is fairly IBM-oriented. It does explain what best practices are about but does not offer sufficient help for you to actually apply them usefully. It is very general/high level. It also overstates their usefulness and doesn't sufficiently discuss the dangers of using them - they can be a follow the leader tool.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding resource for business today!.......1997-11-23

The book's structure takes the reader on a wonderful road of understanding I/T "Best Practices" in general, to applying models and concepts for continuous improvement. It's written in layperson's terms so even the executive holding the purse strings can easily understand it, while providing sufficient detail for the I/T professional. The models are beautifully composed and relevant to our continually changing business world. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to know about today's technology and how to apply it for competitive advantage and service reliability. An outstanding effort from Mr. Cortada!

If you think this book will give you insights on getting listings and selling houses, you're wrong. Terri writes in one place "the purpose of this chapter is to acquaint you with prospecting sources, not sales techniques and closes as such"...Well, Terri *never* discusses sales techniques, in fact nothing in the entire book will acquaint you with sales techniques and closes for getting listings or selling homes. Most of the book is filler comprised of things like "time management" and "balancing your personal and professional life." But if you're a pro and looking for help getting listings from potential sellers or closing the sale, look elsewhere. This book is an introduction to the business, that's all.

I feel that this book is needed asset in the industry for a beginning real estate agent. I found that it would have been more helpful to me in my early years of real estate sales. I highly recommend this book for a new agent just entering this industry. It gives a good sound basis for getting your feet wet in the industry and it will five you a great insight to focus and plan.
