5 out of 5 stars My recent Amazon purchase.......2007-09-09

I've recently purchased two of these books from Amazon. They are the equivalent of new books. I'm very satisfied. So are the two people to whom I gave them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book........2007-09-08

I bought this book and I want to learn how to shoot nature and landscape.
This book is excellent and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars it works!!.......2007-09-07

Very well organized book. Easy to read. Illustrations are well done. I liked his assignments. Good for beginners because of clarity of descriptions and lack of jargon.

5 out of 5 stars The new "bible" on digital outdoor photography!.......2007-04-27

I have been an avid amateur photographer for over 30 years. I am very thankful for having started my photography journey with a "match the needle" manual Canon SLR in the early 1970's, forcing me to learn the dynamics of ISO/speed/aperture. John Shaw, George Lepp, and Art Wolfe were early inspirations for the composition and artistic side of the equation. Many pieces of f2.8 and faster glass later, I have been recently building my Canon 30D system (my 5th digital camera) and hungry for a comprehensive book to complement my past learning experiences and add new tips. Usually this exercise requires multiple books that one pieces together from recent reading memory. Not the case with The BetterPhoto Guide to Digital Nature Photography. Jim's book was EXACTLY what I was looking for. A great refresh to my past learning combined with the new techniques and clear methodologies from Jim's expert experiences. I read this book cover to cover in one sitting - how could I put it down when the next unread page promised to reveal yet another gem I would commit to use? I took 2 pages of notes - many action items for me to follow through with on the prep for and during my next photo experience. I consider this a must-have photographic bible to refer to on a regular basis. Jim assumes the reader is on the path to becoming a professional outdoor photographer. This is a fresh approach. Much more of an apprenticeship style mentoring relationship with the reader. Well done Jim! 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Informative, beautifully designed with a clever narrative.......1999-03-24

Each potential shoot is summarised under paragraphs on "Seeing...", "Thinking..." then "Acting..." The photographs are beautiful, prompting the reader to see the scene from different angles (line drawings sometimes illustrate the effects of a changed viewpoint). Information on camera type, lens and filters used is included for each shot. Covers close-ups to the formal gardens of the French Chateaux to the English country garden. I hope to find more books like this one.

4 out of 5 stars An accessible, interesting intro to travel photography.......2003-05-29

Mr. Busselle's experience as a travel photographer shines through from the first page, where he gives the first of many tidbits of useful and straightforward advice. Specifically, he states that while many people choose to photograph their vacation, most of their pictures will represent their own interests instead of capturing their experience as a whole. In retrospect many of my vacation photos have a similar themes and as a whole my vacation photo album is more redundant then it ought to be.

Essentially, this guide's goal is to explain by example how to create an interesting, representative, photo essay of your trip. Each page shows off two or more of Mr. Busselle's photos around varying themes (such as landscape, people, flowers) and describes in a simple formulaic manner one or more of those pictures. These descriptions are broken into 3 categories: Seeing, Thinking and Acting. Each page in this book can essentially be taken in independently from the rest of the book - which greatly increases it's value as a coffee table book once you've read it through. For me the value of each page was two-fold. First it made me more aware of another subject which I might be leaving out of my own photo albums, and second, gives a brief description of what went into one of the specific photos (Why pick this light? What filters were used? Where to put the camera?).

Perhaps my favorite aspect of this book was that I felt the photos were accesible. While Busselle's photos are leaps and bounds better then my own, I didn't feel intimidated by the subjects he choose or that the decisions he made in capturing them were beyond me. I feel much more aware of the type of subjects I will want to capture on my next trip, and I feel like I'll think more thoroughly about how I want to capture them. I also finish the book as a fan of Busselle's work.

What's left to make this a five star book? I felt that in a few instances the explaination stopped short of what I required. Occasionally, there are tidbits about selling your photos which seemed somewhat extaneous in the context of the rest of the helpful explainations of lighting or composition. It's also a shame that some of the photos span across the spine of the book, making them less pleasant to look at in general.

With that, I'm going to make a checklist of the photos I'd like to have from my next trip, and when I'm out there I'll have many more options about how to capture those subjects then the last time around.

5 out of 5 stars Different approach that works well.......2001-01-29

The layout of this book is different, and it is very helpful the way it is done. On each two page spread there is one photograph that the author goes into details of what it looked like in real life, what he was thiniking about how the photo should come out, and what proceeducres he used to get there (what filters, what rules of composition, what lighting challenges, etc.). Then also on the same two page spread, another one or two photos supporting the same idea, and some additional information blurbs. It all works very well and does help one look and learn.

Standup comic George Carlin follows up his dark-horse smash bestseller Brain Droppings with another compendium of cranky meditations, cinching his reputation as the Andy Rooney of boomer hepcats. "Road rage, air rage," Carlin rails. "Why should I be forced to divide my rage into separate categories? To me, it's just one big, all-around, everyday rage. I don't have time for fine distinctions." Carlin is not into the lengthy essay--he's a sprinter of the mind. Most sentences in the book could be lifted out to stand alone and provoke deep thought: "How can it be a spy satellite if they announce on television that it's a spy satellite?" Good question. "Why do they bother saying 'Raw sewage'? Do some people cook that stuff?" Yuck, but yes, Carlin's got a point.

He can do an extended bit too, most memorably the transcript of Jesus on a talk show plugging his new tell-all memoir about the Trinity, Three's a Crowd. Carlin is funny, but genuinely angry and poignant at times: "You live 80 years and at best you get about six minutes of pure magic," he says. Sad, but about right.

And how did Carlin get into his line of business, "thinking up goofy s---," as he puts it? There's a clue in one entry in this book: "As of 1995 the number of people who had lived on earth was 105,472,380,169 ... it means that at this point there have been almost 1 quadrillion human bowel movements and most of them occurred before people had anything to read. These are the kind of thoughts that kept me from moving quickly up the corporate ladder."

Thank god Carlin stayed low on the corporate food chain and high on his own utterly idiosyncratic ideas! --Tim Appelo

      Book Description

Spending more than 15 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list in hardcover, George Carlin, the thinking persons comic, has made it very clear how successful he is at the transition from stage to page.In Napalm Silly Putty, Carlins characteristically ironic and hilarious take on life shines through.

2 out of 5 stars Crosses the line........2007-06-06

In "Brain Droppings", George Carlin did a marvellous job of offering curmudgeonly perspectives on life, the universe, and everything. He was funny, witty, and spot-on with his observations. In this book, he crosses the line between curmudgeonly and nasty. There are still some funny bits in this book, which is why I rated it 2 stars instead of 1, and his observations are still frequently unsettlingly accurate. But instead of coming across as an amusingly witty curmudgeon, in far too much of this book he comes across as a downright nasty, vindictive, bitter and hateful misanthropist. I don't recommend this book unless you share that attitude, or at least have absolutely NO capacity for being offended.

      4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to a Great Comedian.......2007-03-02

Some of the older readers like myself, may prefer Carlin's earlier book "Brain Droppings" that have a good deal of his material that made him one of the top comedians of the late 70's to early 80's. Younger readers are probably more familiar with this material. It's full of a lot of great quotes and hilarious commentary (I love the bit about there only being three real sports). It helps a lot if you have seen Carlin because of the way he delivers the material live, which is not as effective as blindly reading his material without a clue as to his vocal style and facial expressions.

The best part about owning the book is that it is easier to memorize some of the funnier bits and whip out the quotes to people who annoy you. It seems like he has a great quote in this book for just about any occasion!

4 out of 5 stars Hey, Don't Prick Your Finger, Buddy.......2007-02-28

Napalm & Silly Putty made me laugh. A bunch. A whole bunch. Carlin's cerebral, feisty, crude humor is sometimes just what the doctor ordered in this "hypocritically correct" society. No matter how great his jokes might be his irreverent but intelligent observations are what makes him the best in his field.

Some of Napalm & Silly Putty's yard-jewels of wit and wisdom include:

"So far this is the oldest I've ever been."

"You know a business that doesn't lend itself too easily to the Internet? Pay toilets."

"Next time they give you all that civic BS about voting, keep in mind that Hitler was elected in a full, free democratic election."

"You know something you rarely hear about? A bunch of Jews killed in a tornado."

      And finally:

"America has too many fake Irish pubs. Giving your bar an Irish name doesn't make it a pub. The word pub is earned the hard way: tons and tons of puke and thousands of shattered cheekbones."

      Ah, so true...

But you know what's really strange about this 2001 book? How many tragic and once funny but now cringe-inducing things Carlin jokingly wrote about have since actually happened. I won't make a list here but anyone who has read this book in the last year or two knows what I mean, right? (Okay, I will mention a couple. Buildings blowing up, buses exploding, etc etc etc...) Maybe Carlin's precognitive in a darkly comedic sort of way, huh? All I know is this is a great book!

3 out of 5 stars Sub par Carlin.......2006-11-12

This is far from Carlin's best work, and I say that as a fan. The book is hit or miss, with slightly more misses than hits. It's sure to offend, but that's part of Carlin's brilliance.

If you only buy one Carlin tome pass on this, If you already own most of Carlin's books then go ahead and buy "Napalm." Instead read Brain Droppings. Brain Droppings

4 out of 5 stars Funny and almost as good as Brain Droppings.......2006-02-08

Like a sequel to his first book. If you're a Carlin fan you'll enjoy it.

      Book Description

He's back! In a voice more cantankerous and comically pungent than ever, George Carlin spouts off on everything from British royalty ("A Day in the Life of Henry VIII") to auto racing ("Sports Should Be Fixed") to American politics ("Don't Blame the Leaders"). With his manic mind and motor mouth in high gear, he rants against anyone who tells him to "have a nice day" and skewers the euphemism epidemic ("To be honest, some of this language makes me want to vomit. Well, perhaps 'vomit' is too strong a word. It makes me want to engage in a involuntary personal protein spill"). When Carlin's in a more reflective mood, he reveals, "I couldn't commit suicide if my life depended on it," and ponders the really big questions, like "Is a vegetarian permitted to eat animal crackers?" and "Griddle cakes, pancakes, hotcakes, flapjacks: why are there four names for grilled batter and only one word for love?" What his candid take on "life's little moments" lacks in political correctness, it more than makes up for in gut-busting laughs. He's the guy who dares say what the rest of us hesitate even to think. And he does so in ways that are often raunchy and always riotous.

3 out of 5 stars Reflux disease. .......2006-07-10

Buy used, and only to complete a collection. It is funny, but it is the comedic equivalent to a reflux disease and the up-swallow of all his old work. Carlin fans already own the bulk of this in one capacity or another. If you are a female this artist often feels rough, sort of psycho, and angry bitter. As a woman you sort of wonder how his wife puts up with the madness because he has no soft or sly delivery techniques in this work. He is in your face and on a rant with no answers offered to the problems of the world he obliterates. Just complaints.

This is a created to be gift for a liberal guy in his 50's who remembers that Carlin actually HAS made a political contribution to our society through his work on free speech. If you have no idea what to get your uncle, brother, or father for his 50Th birthday get the whole set of George Carlin on CD. This as a book is sort of sad, and as a CD is best bought to complete a set. If you are buying only one item of this artist it is not stand alone quality.

5 out of 5 stars Carlin at his best.......2004-10-28

It's difficult for people like George Carlin to live in such a crazy country. Anyone with a logical and objective mind can see the silliness of religion. It is the greatest scam ever pulled on mankind. The religious right with their backwardness and ignorance have plenty of time on their hands hence all the bad reviews here. Well if you lot want to chant on a daily basis to an invisible man in the sky that's your business.... the rest of us will just laugh our heads off at you and make sure your moralistic and hypocritical rules don't invade our wonderful free country. Go and join the taliban and form your own country and enjoy many hours a day chanting at the sky. It's a wonderful book from an american genius.

2 out of 5 stars Why would You Get This Published.......2004-10-08

WHAt Kind of an as*h*** writes down 300 pages of questions and doesnt give one f***ing answer. Think About that Eh!

2 out of 5 stars Too much recycled material here.......2002-11-29

Much of this - and I mean MUCH of this - most Carlin fans already own in one capacity or another. A lot of this consists of material drawn from his "You Are Diseased" record and other older stuff as well, so if you're already a fan, steer clear. Having his material prsented in an audiobook format (him in a studio reading into a microphone with no crowd interplay) just deadens much of the material and makes you overly conscious of how he does the magic. There are times when he reads off stuff that, when you hear it live, you think is aside material (the errant curse word, the witty follow-up). When presented here, this normally dicey flavor just comes off scripted and flat.

Stick to his live records. This is just an attempt to stay in the mix because the book versions do so well (bearing in mind, the books basically codify his stage material beyond the excellent "Brain Droppings" tome).

4 out of 5 stars Classic unapologetic Carlin.......2002-06-04

People probably thought I was insane as I drove past them in my car laughing at this very funny audiobook. I have to guess that the audio version is better than the text because Carlin's delivery is so fantastic. You really have to hear the way he says it to get the full impact of the humor.

Carlin is a master at two things:
1.) Carefully choosing the exact words to describe stupid things about life
      2.) Expression and delivery

In this book he talks about some of the silly things we say like, "Give my love to so and so" and "Do you have the time"? Both very funny sketches.

Its not a live comedy show so there is no laugh track which I find makes the silly nature of the subjects even more amusing.

At times, he goes overboard and I think his far left political commentary will offend but I'm sure he doesn't care. Some of the jokes aren't that funny and I think he was running short on the "A" material. Nevertheless, there is plenty of hilarious stuff here and if you're a fan of George Carlin you won't want to miss it.

I have been a Carlin fan since the hippy dippy weatherman days. The fact that he tells you up front that "I will read to you but you'll have to get someone else to understand it for you" is just the best. If you can't laugh at yourself don't listen to this CD. His wit and perspectives are not for the faint of heart or the tight of ass. I met Mr. Carlin several years ago going into a Ruby Tuesday resturant on the beach in Biloxi. He graciously gave me fifteen minutes of his time and was tremendously kind to listen to me rant about how much his humor has meant to me over the years. I love his body of work and I loved these three books on CD. A big thumbs up or at least one those fingers way up!

4 out of 5 stars AS PROFOUND AND PROFANE AS EVER.......2004-12-18

Stand-up comedian George Carlin (he of the oblique life commentary and not-for-tender-ears vocabulary) has penned three books ("Brain Droppings", "Napalm & Silly Putty", and "More Napalm & Silly Putty".) Each is rife with his wry, absurdist comments and musings about the world around him. Now, bits and bitters from this trio of laughs is gathered into 7.5 hours of hilarity read, of course, by the man himself.

Although Carlin has been doing his schtick for almost fifty years there's no evidence of age about him. His delivery is as on target as ever and, truly, it's in the delivery that Carlin excels, whether he's observing the popularity of names, noting that nursing homes will one day be populated by Debbies and Tiffanys or doing his vaunted riff on oxymorons - death benefits, close proximity, etc. One cannot fathom how his brain operates as apparently unrelated thoughts come rolling forth leaving listeners guffawing and nodding their heads.

His voice may be a bit raspier but his timing is to the nano second. Listen and laugh.

          Book Description

With eighteen hit comedy albums, two Grammys, two Cable Ace Awards, and more HBO specials than anyone else to his credit, George Carlin remains as popular as ever. His first book Brain Droppings was a New York Times best-seller in both hardcover and paperback and sold more than 650,000 copies. His record eleventh HBO special is forthcoming in 2001, and he still performs more than 100 sold-out concerts a year. The legendary comic has an all-new collection of cutting-edge opinions, musings, curiosities, and queries, Napalm & Silly Putty, which will be released May 2001. Based on the new book, the Napalm & Silly Putty 2002 Calendar will have fans laughing every day of the year at Carlin's smart questions ("Why do they bother saying 'raw sewage'? Do some people cook that stuff?"), acute observations ("Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it."), and unique perspective ("Death Row - if you're condemned to die they have to give you one last meal of your own request. A group of people want to kill you, so they want you to eat something you like?"). As someone who has as much authority as the pope (he just doesn't have as many people who believe it), George Carlin will have readers clamoring to begin each day with his unique style of humor.

5 out of 5 stars Must for anybody who likes thinking person's comic.......2001-10-28

I enjoyed George Carlin's BRAIN DROPPINGS, but his latest
effort is even better . . . NAPALM & SILLY PUTTY is a MUST
for anybody who likes the thinking person's comic--and even
those who don't . . . his hilarious new collection of quips
often had me laughing out loud.

He asks such tough questions as:
Who does a male ladybug dance with?
When Reagan got Alzheimer's, how could they tell?

          he shares philosophical musings:
In America, anybody can be president. That's the problem.
No one quite knows what's next, but everybody does it.

          He provides information:
An art thief is a man who takes pictures.
McDonald's breakfast for under a dollar is actually more expensive
than that. You have to factor in the cost of bypass surgery.

          And he shares observations:
You rarely see one oat all by itself.
One nice thing about being dead is that you immediately become
eligible to appear on stamps and money.

          ok, ok . . . stop begging . . . here's one more:
Whenever a guy says, "Are they keeping you busy?" I always
tell him, "Well, your wife is keeping me pretty busy!" And that
seems to hold him for about half an hour.

There are sooooooo many more i'd like to share . . . however,
since some--if not a lot--of these might tend to upset
          some folks, I'll just recommend that you get the book;
          i.e., if not easily offended.

          1 out of 5 stars Um..........2001-09-26

Isn't this the kind of thing he would make fun of in his stage act?
