fun NASCAR romance .......2007-05-09
In the NASCAR Nextel Cup, Gabby O'Farrell has proven competitive although she has not yet won her first race at that level. She has won one time on the NASCAR Busch series, but never at the superbowl level, which is her dream and her socially prominent mother's nightmare.
However, ignoring her mother to compete against the best is one thing even though some think she got the opportunity because her dad, CEO of O'Farrell Industries. However ignoring her feelings for bit boss Vaughn Steiner is much more difficult. She wants him in the worst way and even loves his daughter Stephanie. Unbeknownst to her Vaughn knows how much he cares every time she is on the track as his heart collapses whenever a car is near, which means throughout a race. Winning may prove not enough for this duo to succeed as a couple.
This fun NASCAR romance stars a lead couple who readers will like as they try to remain professional in spite of a deep attraction between them. The racing sequences directly add to the romance as incidents occur on the track that sends Vaughn into male protective mode for the woman he loves. Though her mom and Stephanie's grandmother are nasty characters with no redeeming traits, readers will enjoy Ken Casper's fine spin around the track.

Book Description
Down on your luck? Don't despair. You might still be headed for a life of riches and renown. After all, consider the experiences of:
* Marilyn Monroe, who in 1947, after one year under contract, was dropped by 20th Century-Fox because Darryl Zanuck thought she was unattractive
* John Grisham, whose first novel, A Time to Kill, was rejected by sixteen agents and a dozen publishing houses
* Walt Disney, whose first cartoon production company went bankrupt
* Barbra Streisand, who made her stage debut at age 19 in a show that opened and closed in a single night
* Edgar Allan Poe, who was expelled from West Point
* Adlai Stevenson, who at age 12 accidentally killed a visitor to his parents' home on Christmas day
This inspired compendium of pop culture and historical trivia will amuse and delight readers of all ages. It's a perfect gift for graduates, for moms and dads, and for anyone whose cheese has recently been moved.

A great pick-me-up!.......2006-03-07
This book is a great pick-me-up when one feels as if the goals set are just out of reach. The icons we all know and recognize are included - failures and success on each page. Who knew Frank Sinatra was expelled from high school for rowdy behavior?!
This is a great gift book, and I would recommend it for people starting any new adventure: college, a new job, or for the fun of the read.
Something to read on the "can," otherwise skip it........2005-11-23
I have several dozen books on various aspects of success and failure and this book is the most mediocre of them all. Each page has about 100 words at best and there is no detail to any of the stories of the effort and perseverance required to actually succeed. So some slightly famous someone you have heard about had a bad day once. Big deal, there is no lesson to that. The real lesson is in reading about the depth and breadth it really takes to succeed - real commitment, not just a simple piece of good or bad luck.
If you have a friend who just doesn't like to read at all, this would be a suitable gift. I'm not saying that to be a book snob...we have all been in "their" houses, where the heck are the books? If you have a friend or relative who is trying to achieve something great in his or her life, but they are just not the type to read, then this book would be an acceptable choice. My younger brother - whom - I admire a great deal, is trying to succeed at a very difficult career path and I will be getting this book for him for his Christmas present. However, if you want anything more than the most superficial read, choose a different book.
Work is a good thing.......2004-09-09
How interesting and disappointing that the majority of "failures" described in this entertaining little book, are simply detailing an honest day's work. I personally don't think that gainful employment is a "failure" no matter what one's hopes and aspirations in life may be. We should all be so lucky.
Great Book, Great Gift--even for yourself!.......2004-03-19
This is a GREAT book. When I read about the humble beginnings of high achievers, I get motivated to be great too! For example Walt Disney's first cartoon film failed miserably and he even went bankrupt! The point of this book is keep trying, don't stop. `Cause the road to success IS paved with failure!

Do not buy this rip-off.......2003-07-07
How can the average rating of 21 people be near 5?
This book is a silly collection of trashy one-liners; each one-liner takes up an entire page. Dumb rumors nobody cares about like "Marilyn Monroe worked in a take-out restaurant before becoming famous".
I was expecting a series of STORIES or REPORTS that would actually teach me something.
Save your money and do not buy this disappointing collection of tabloid cut-and-paste.

A fine survey which gathers these into themed chapters.......2005-02-10
There's no single theme to Speed Bump: Cartoons For Idea People, no basic philosophy - but his 'outtakes' appear in over 200 newspapers around the country and Speed Bump is a fine survey which gathers these into themed chapters, includes the author's introduction to each, and even presents a small portion of color cartoons with the black and white winners. Dave Coverly is funny and pointed: Speed Bump is running in its 10th year and has been nominated for numerous awards, so place this book at the top of the list.
Dave Coverly eats worms.......2005-01-15
This is the funniest second book ever written by Dave Coverly....he is by far the best comic panelist working today. Plus I think he's completely kicked his Beanie Baby habit.
Quirky, laugh out loud humor.......2004-12-28
It has been a long time since I've read a cartoon book that is laugh out loud funny. Dave Coverly's quirky sense of humor and drawing skills combine to create a book that is hard to put down until you have read every one of the cartoons. In fact I didn't put it down until I had completed it and had to keep sharing individual cartoons with others as I went along. A joy to read and sure to put a smile on your face, Speed Bump is highly recommended humor.

Syndicated since 1994, Speed Bump entertains faithful readers in more than 200 newspapers American Greetings publishes a 48-card line of Speed Bump greeting cards and a Speed Bump desk calendar featuring the cartoonist's outlandish brand of award-winning humor.

no wonder.......2000-09-03
It's no wonder that Jim Unger of HERMAN fame, as well as that guy from THE NEW YORKER who does those odd porcupinish strips, have blurbed, as it were, this solid collection of cartoons, for SPEEDBUMP smacks of both--in the best possible way. Less harsh and misanthropic than Unger, not quite as bizarre as THE FAR SIDE, way funnier than many-many-many of THE NEW YORKER frames, often very cleverly drawn, Coverly's SPEEDBUMP is a real delight. The stuff he does with the animal world contains some of the most effective, contemplative, gentle satire I've come across in the 'toon realm. I'm a big fan of HERMAN and THE FAR SIDE--and a not particularly easy person to please--so for me to say that this is a keeper is a pretty kinda/sorta big deal. Seriously.
Absolutely unbelievable!.......2000-09-03
Never have I seen so many great ideas in one book! I'm sure a lot of people would compare Dave Coverly's Speed Bump to The Far Side because of it's single panel format. I consider myself one of the biggest Far Side fans in the universe, but I can say in all honesty that this book has more outstandingly hilarious jokes in it than any Far Side collection I've read (and I own almost every Far Side book ever published!) Some of Coverly's ideas will make you say "Why didn't I think of that?" while you are holding your stomach from laughing so hard. I'm sure many, many people will be using some of these comics for screensavers or wallpaper on their computers. I really hope Mr. Coverly blesses us with more collections and I also hope he gets the same sort of newspaper distribution that some of the other great comics are getting. This book ranks up there with the funniest things I've ever read, and I'm sure you will feel that way too. This book deserves much more than five stars!
Hilarious.......2000-05-04
Fantastic book. Coverly's toons are splendid. They make you laugh out loud, giggle with delight, snicker under your breath, etc., etc. His quirky unusual way of looking at life will bring joy to yours. Buy it, read it, enjoy it, tell others!

One of the Most Informative Books on Qualitative Research Today.......2005-08-15
This book is not a how to of qualitative research. It does not tell you what needs to be in your methodology. Instead, it addresses the essential dilemmas that occur throughout the qualitative research process - issues of ethics, representation, voice, inclusion, knowledge etc.
Using knowledge and lessons that has recently arisen in poststructural and feminist research, Weis and Fines show how these lessons can inform any qualitative design (and they even avoid the big words).
The book is fill of relevant examples and focused discussions - it is a must for students and for researchers. It provides a tool for those in the qualitative design to ensure that their research is sound and reflective of the situation in which they are researching.
A Politically Motivated and Extremely Biased Approach.......2002-10-17
This book includes a not too subtle assault on The Right. There is nothing wrong with assaulting The Right, the problem lies in the fact that this book provides no evidence or even arguments for the claims it asserts, so why include them? This just tells us some of the authors' real motivations. Here is my favorite quote: "We have, at times, consciously and deliberately left out some of these great stories, ones that have the potential to become `bad data' to buttress stereotypes, reaffirm the ideology and rhetoric of the Right and reinscribe dominant representations." (pg. 49) Paraphrase: 'We are politically motivated, and we know that we are always correct. Therefore, we can justify using only data (stories) that support our own beliefs and politics.'
This is hardly the role of a researcher and this can hardly be considered research. The fact that they admit to manipulating their data gives researchers (specifically qualitative researchers), and research in general, a bad name. If this is what subjective research is all about, then it is not only worthless, it is detrimental. If you would like some expensive kindling or a good example of how NOT to do research, buy this book.
The Speed of the Speed Bumps.......2000-10-13
Mom's book was great. Yes, I really am her daughter checking out the site. So obviously I'm a litte partial. But since I have heard what this book is about since I was in fourth grade and have read the manuscript, I must say that it is quite good. Don't worry, she isn't putting me up to this. Another book you might want to try if you liked Speedbumps, is The Unknown City by well you can guess Lois Weis, but also Michelle Fine. Check it out, you may find that you like it a lot. Then again who knows? Well, when I'm older and have actually read all of my mom's books, I'll come back and write a little better of a review. Well hope you like the book!C ya! P.S. (shh) my mom didn't want me to write this
Book Description
Just One %$#@ Speed Bump After Another: More Cartoons by Dave Coverly is the latest collection of comic panels by the proudly scatterbrained cartoonist and his constant companion, Cuppa Joe. Regular readers of "Speed Bump" will recognize the subtle ironies and the overlooked details we all take for granted, as well as the occasional wordplay and the gentle pokes at the absurd ways we live and love. Irregular readers might try bran.--The humor is rarely tied to pop culture, current trends or fads; instead, it comes from the human traits we have in common. You may see your family in some of the panels, or your friends, neighbors and co-workers. You may even see yourself...heck you may even see yourself in animal form. In one "Speed Bump" cartoon entitled "Frog Puberty", an adult frog talking to another about his youngster, says, "Last year I'd say `Jump' and he'd say `How High?.... This year I say `Jump' and he says `How Come?'"--Much like the last book, this "Speed Bump" tome covers a wide range of topics. You'll find plenty of cartoons about kids & parenting, love & relationships, work & business...and as Dave is a regular contributor to Peta's Animal Times magazine, there are more than a few animal cartoons thrown in for good measure.--Now with more than a decade under its stylishly drawn belt, "Speed Bump" has accumulated hundreds of newspapers and millions of readers on several land masses around the world. It's found its way onto refrigerator doors, church bulletin boards, calendars and greeting cards, and into textbooks, TV programs, and even a U.S. Congressional Hearing. But being the nice folks that we are, we've saved you the trouble of tracking all these down yourself by binding them into a big, beautiful book. It even has a pull-out color section so you can pin your favorite.

Funniest Book I've Read in a Long While.......2006-09-28
Dave Coverly is one of the most underrated cartoonists out there. I competely agree with the previous review, in that he shares the same creative writing style as Larson, but his illustrations are superior.
The puns are numerous and outrageous... and will have you actually laughing out loud. Dave's brilliant artwork fits the subject matter perfectly. I have a number of comic collections in my library and this one now resides in my favorites section. Do yourself a favor and pick this book up. Better yet, call your local paper and demand that they run Speed Bump.
The true heir to Gary Larson.......2006-05-24
Are you a fan of "The Far Side?" Do you wish that Gary Larson was still doing that comic? I'm sad that he's gone too, but he sure produced a host of people to carry the load. Some have nowhere near the amount of imagination that Larson did, but one person definitely does. That's Dave Coverly, author of "Speed Bump." I just read through one of his latest collections, called Just One %$#@ Speed Bump After Another... and it's yet another winner.
Coverly is the closest I have seen to Larson's creativity in the one-panel (or sometimes small multi-panel) comic strip, bringing his characters to life and making wonderful jokes. Sometimes, Coverly will take a familiar phrase, and give it just one twist to the left to make you laugh out loud (such as one comic in this book where one baby sitting on a park bench tells another baby not to worry. "We *all* get thrown out with the bathwater from time to time.") Other panels have plays on words that sometimes make you groan, but always make you laugh (the head of a thesaurus publishing company telling an employee "Bob, you're fired, axed, canned, sacked, booted, dismissed, terminated and let go.")
This is the first collection I've read, so I don't know if the layout's the same in all of them, but this one is divided into sections regarding children, animals, gender differences in society, work, the meaning of life, and then a hodge-podge of unrelated subjects. The jokes are always clever, pop culture references abound ("Diane's date with a Headline News Anchor: 'Weird...didn't we just have this conversation half an hour ago, Tom?'") and even the introductions to the chapters are quite witty. The chapter regarding workplace comics begins with him describing a typical day on the comic creation assembly line, catching a bus with some lesser cartoonists while some (like Scott Adams) drive by in limos. Coverly doesn't avoid philosophy either, with one panel having God tell an angel "C'mon, it'll be fun! I'll throw on some stars, pop in a few planets, drum up a life form or two, and this place will be hoppin'!" The caption is, of course, "The Big Shebang Theory."
As for the artwork, Coverly's work is quite distinctive. He doesn't have any set "characters" like Larson did; instead all of them look quite different. Some have big noses that jut from their faces, while others have little ones. The eyes are different, heck even the body shapes are quite unique. Even the inevitable James Earl Jones comic (you can probably guess along what lines it runs) actually has him look vaguely like James Earl Jones!
This is a great collection of strips from the last couple of years. It was published in late 2005, and contains the winner of last book's caption contest, where you get to write the punchline! This year's deadline was April 7, 2006, so I missed it, but the winner will appear in the newspaper sometime during the year. "Speed Bump" is one of the funniest one-panel comics around these days, and Gary Larson's legacy is well in hand. Pick this one up today.
Book Description
Once again there's good news for those of us who rage at the evening news, shake our heads at Washington's business-as-usual, or watch as politicians carom helplessly between political crises and sex scandals: Dennis Miller is back with his third installment of hilarious observations,
I Rant, Therefore I Am.
Dennis Miller first gained national acclaim as the wise-guy anchor of "Weekend Update" on "Saturday Night Live." When HBO premiered his weekly talk show in April 1994, both critics and fans enthusiastically agreed: "Dennis Miller Live" was the most refreshing talk show on television.
The accolades have continued to pour in. In September 1994, Dennis and his staff won an Emmy Award for writing and have been regularly nominated since. When he takes the stage, the audience demands, "The rants, the rants, the rants," and once again, Dennis Miller delivers the goods. Fans of his smart, quirky, irreverent style of humor are in for another treat-this set of rants is even funnier than the last two rounds.
Dennis Miller keeps on ranting in
I Rant, Therefore I Am, and speaks his mind on topics like:
MODELS-"How ironic that the most exquisite-looking people in the world should end up choosing the profession that requires them to spend all day by the phone waiting for the most hideous people to call them."
COLLEGE-"I don't think you should have to pay back college loans unless you get a job in your field. Put some pressure on the school. If I can't pay my bills, I'm not paying yours."
CONSUMERS-"You know how to tell when you've got a shopping problem? When the lights in the department store momentarily dim after they slide your credit card through the thing."
FAITH-"I envy people who can just let go and totally commit. I, on the other hand, can't even hear the title of the show 'Touched by an Angel' without thinking that a professional baseball player is being sued for sexual harassment."
ASTRONAUTS-"Anybody who would strap themselves onto a giant deodorant spray can, set off a series of explosions under their ass until they've been blasted into the icy vacuum of deep space, and then step outside to take a walk must have more balls than a twenty-four-hour Tokyo driving range."

The third installment of Miller's hilarious observations, now in paperback, is hot on the heels of his bestselling The Rants and Ranting Again!

Don't waste your dollars !!!.......2005-09-13
Dennis Miller is a hypocrite and an angry comedian as well as an awful television show host that turned politician. He uses a sensational pseudo-conservative style of venomous insults and loud belligerence to make a buck. He has aligned himself with the right people, in order to advance his limited and uneventful career. He is being used by the media executives to advance their corporate political agenda.
His writers have done a good job launching a below average comedian and making him a political "idiot savant."
Comedians should stick to comedy.
Save your money!!
Dennis Miller says what other people are afraid to..........2004-09-02
** This refers to the Audio Download **
Dennis Miller is ranting again. This time he discusses topics like "The Need For Reason" and "The End of Accountability" with musings on "Talk Shows" and "Pets." It's classic Miller with his deadpan delivery and usage of similes. One of the best moments is when Miller admits, "Sorry, I'm officially out of similes."
Stephanie's Review:
Not everybody gets or likes Dennis Miller. To enjoy his subtle and clever humor, one needs to really think and be aware of our society and culture. It's a refreshing change from the lowbrow humor found so often today. And your brain needs to work as fast as Miller's. Otherwise, you'll find yourself *getting* what was said in a previous rant when he's well into the next one.
If you get the print edition, you'll supposedly get extra rants. But I recommend the audio book version because Miller narrates it. However, I advise listening to the entire book in one setting--even though it's only a little over two hours long. You'll savor more of Miller's brilliance that way. I listened to this straight through during a trip to New York. When it was finished, I needed about two hours worth of silence to clear my mind, and to digest what was said.
It's a shame that Dennis Miller is so underrated as he appears to be because "I Rant, Therefore I Am" is a definite keeper.
Fun Rants From A Pre-Politically Awakened Miller.......2004-07-18
I think Dennis Miller is a smart and funny guy, and enjoy watching his show. He is one of the more perceptive interviewers out there, and even when I disagree with him, I am always interested in what he has to say, and what the diverse group of panelists he has on says as well.
This book, which was written before Dennis had his political awakening on September 11, 2001, is more center-left politically than he currently is. I think Miller has matured and become a realist since 9/11, and find it interesting comparing some of his rants in this book to his more highly evolved positions today.
The best rants in this book, though, are the apolitical rants, my favorite of which is titled "Fear of Flying." Dennis Miller hates flying, and his insights are extremely entertaining to me, a professional airline pilot. What is interesting here is that except for the actual fear of being airborne, I totally agree with him on the subject of modern airline travel. My favorite line from this particular rant sums up his position perfectly: "Once you've nestled into your seat, which was last cleaned by the Earth-bound third Wright Brother, Noodles, and you've arranged your miniscule stinky synthetic car wash shammy [sic] of a blanket and your Stay Free pillow pad that's the size and softness of a geltab multivitamin, and adjusted to the jet cold, tuberculosis-microbe-laden recirculated air that's blowing right down your spine, you've now achieved the comfort level of a North Korean POW with an ingrown toenail and no premium cable." What can I say? He's right. This is why on my days off you will see me as far away from the airport as is humanly possible.
I would give the book five stars, except the frequently needless adult language really restricts the audience of people with whom I can share this brilliant work. Dennis thanks for setting the world straight.
A Winner!.......2004-06-07
The book is 208 pages long and is divided into 52 different commentaries or "Rants" as Miller (The former host of Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update") calls them. Each rant is devoted to a particular topic. The rants (all of which are recycled from Miller's show) all begin with Miller saying, "Now I don't want to get off on a rant here" and conclude with "Of course that's just my opinion. I could be wrong".
The rants cover a wide range of topics from The Oscars to College Life to The War On Drugs and Country Music. Miller delivers them in a style that works just as well on the page as it does on a stage in front of an audience. Often when stand-up comics try to transfer their routines to book form, the attempt falls flat (IE: George Carlin's "Napalm And Silly Putty"). Miller's commentaries wouldn't be out of place in a Dave Barry/Tony Kornheiser column.
What's especially good about Miller is that while comedy is his trademark, a lot of times he offers up some words of wisdom. Here are a few examples:
"Maybe the reason Republicans are so pro-gun is because they need them to constantly shoot themselves in the foot".
"Compared to Clinton, eels are Velcro. But as reprehensible as he is, we love him".
A couple political samples there. Another good one is his commentary on The War On Drugs where he sets out to be funny and succeeds, while at the same time making a strong case for a commonly held viewpoint among many that the drug war is bogus.
The humor is, for the most part, consistently funny throughout the book. There are a few moments where Miller starts to go overboard with (...) jokes and (...) references. But the majority of the humor is dirty funny, not dirty and stale.
The only real drawback that I can think of about I Rant Therefore I Am is the fact that some of the more overly topical references now seem somewhat dated. Does anyone out there really care about the 1998/1999 Oscars anymore? Did they even care about them in the beginning?
I Rant, Therefore I Am is a good light read that's just the right length. If you want to see sacred cows become hamburger, pick up a copy of it. Another Amazon quick-pick recommendation is a fun novel called THE LOSERS CLUB by Richard Perez
lost in space.......2003-12-26
What happened to this guy? He used to be funny
but no more. It seems that comedy has been replaced
by thinly cloaked hostility. Maybe he'll experience
an attack of conscience and retire.
