    Book Description

Chosen to represent the United States at the 46th Venice Biennale, Bill Viola, a New York artist living on the West Coast, is recognized internationally for his work in video and sound installations. This book brings together a selection of essays, notebook entries, drawings, and descriptions of projects that map Viola's personal course through the readings, observations, experiments, and associations that form the groundwork for his art. Each work illustrated is accompanied by a description by the artist, as well as comments on the work's origins from the artist's notebooks.

For the last 25 years, Viola has used innovative multimedia technologies to explore the phenomena of sense perception as a language of the body and avenue to self-knowledge, integrating many disciplines and philosophies to reveal contemporary art's relevance to the modern world. His views have deep roots in mysticism, poetry, philosophy, Eastern art, shamanism, Chinese Taoism, Sufism, and Zen Buddhism. Viola's chief concerns today are to draw attention to the upset ecological balance of nature by focusing on the connection between our inner and outer lives, on the conception of the self as part of the whole.

      Book Description

The attention currently directed from the West to the Islamic world has profound ramifications for the art made by those who come from the region but live elsewhere: that origin is increasingly becoming a defining term in the consideration of works by artists such as Mona Hatoum and Shirin Neshat. Resisting any homogenizing impulse, Without Boundary recognizes a need to ask if this art is marked by an Islamic difference. Author and curator Fereshteh Daftari considers issues ranging from the aesthetic legacy of Islamic art to contemporary ideas of identity and faith. Essays by MoMA Director Glenn D. Lowry, whose own academic and curatorial background involves traditional Islamic arts; Homi Bhabha, the preeminent theorist and scholar of the postcolonial condition; and the Turkish writer and novelist Orhan Pamuk, winner of the German Book Peace Prize and author of My Name Is Read and Snow. Artists include Jananne-Al-Ani, Ghada Amer, Kutlug Ataman, The Atlas Group/Walid Raad, Mona Hatoum, Shirazeh Houshiary, Emily Jacir, Y.Z. Kami, Mike Kelley, Rachid Koraichi, Shirin Neshat, Marjane Satrapi, Shirana Shahbazi, Raqib Shaw, Shahzia Sikander and Bill Viola.

        Book Description

An appraisal of the full range of accomplishments of this popular contemporary American artist.

The video and installation artist Bill Viola is one of the most popular artists in the world today. Significantly, in a world where an artist's importance is often conferred by small groups of experts and cognoscenti, Viola's rich imagery touches a nerve with large international audiences. His work is profoundly spiritual and never afraid to make big statements about human life and its relation to the universe, to the soul and human spirit, to nature, and to death. Viola is one of those rare artists whose work makes us aware of our nature as human beings. He takes art back to what were once its fundamental concerns and gives it a relevance to the emotional and spiritual lives of ordinary people.

While Viola has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, there has never been an extensive critical appraisal of the full range of his work. In The Art of Bill Viola eminent critics examine the scope of the artist's creations since the 1970s. Their studies include the relationship of Viola's art to the religious traditions of both Asia and Europe, the use of space as metaphor within his installations, the use of sound in his work, and the impact of its exhibition upon other video artists. These essays demonstrate Viola's uniqueness and importance as an artist of enduring international reputation and for the first time allow us to properly assess his place within history. 50 color illustrations.

With contributions by: Rhys Davies • Cynthia Freeland • Antonio Guesa • David Jasper • Jonathan Lahey-Dronsfield • David Morgan • Otto Neumaier • Elizabeth ten Grotenhiuis • Jean Wainwright

5 out of 5 stars The Artistic Impact of Video Art in the Hands of Bill Viola.......2005-11-05

At the first introduction of so-called 'art' in the form of videotapes played in museum and gallery installations caused a public response of skepticism: how can something so transient as filmed activity be called Art? The validity of video art is now accepted as one of the more creative venues of artistic expression and that is due to a very great degree to the pioneering efforts of Bill Viola, a uniquely gifted man who now is accepted internationally as one of the most important artists of our time.

This brilliant book as created by Chris Townsend explores Bill Viola's works from the 1970s to 2004 with abundant photographs of 'stills' images from his videos that even in the frozen state of the book page are shatteringly poignant and beautiful. Perhaps for those uninformed about Viola's work this format will not impress, but the book may stimulate more people to seek out installations of his works as they appear in the varied arenas of art around the world. Townsend includes contributions by excellent writers such as Rhys Davies, Cynthia Freeland, Antonio Guesa, David Jasper, Jonathan Lahey-Dronsfield, David Morgan, Otto Neumaier, Elizabeth ten Grotenhiuis, Jean Wainwright - each of whom brings not only artistic verification but also personal response to Viola's many projects.

Perhaps one of the most successful works Viola has produced has been THE TRISTAN PROJECT in which he worked in tandem with Director Peter Sellars, Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Gehry's Disney Hall to re-think the Wagner masterpiece "Tristan und Isolde" in terms of the elements of water, fire, and the spiritual transformation of love - all by adding the element of projected gigantic screens of Viola's models in movement that created an opera production so profound that it is being staged throughout the world to both audience rapture and critical acclaim.

Bill Viola is a living genius and this fine book helps to inform us why. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, November 05

        5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any in-depth art collectio.......2004-08-10

        Book Description

Bill Viola (b. 1951) is widely acknowledged as the leading video artist on the international scene. His video installations--total environments that envelop the viewer in image and sound--employ sophisticated state-of-the-art technologies and are distinguished by their precision and direct simplicity. Viola's single-channel videotapes have been distributed and broadcast around the world, while his writings have been published and anthologized for international readers.

Since the early 1970s, Viola has used video to explore the phenomena of sense perception as an avenue to self-knowledge. Clearly at odds with the cynicism of his age, his works focus on universal human experiences--birth, death, the unfolding of consciousness--and have roots in Eastern and Western art as well as Sufism, Christian mysticism, and Zen Buddhism. Viola's achievement is that of an artist who began in a new field, unbounded by tradition and dogma, and who arrived, twenty-five years later, deeply enmeshed in a series of intersecting spiritual traditions, both ancient and contemporary.

This catalogue has been published in conjunction with "Bill Viola," the first major survey of the artist's work and the largest exhibition ever devoted to an individual video artist, organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art and curated by David A. Ross and Peter Sellars.

The book features a dynamic and visually rich selection of works from 1972 to 1996, in a presentation compiled by Kira Perov and Bill Viola, with written descriptions by the artist, and a conversation between Viola and poet/scholar Lewis Hyde on the spiritual roots and cultural traditions underlying Viola's art. There is also an overview of the artist's achievement by David A. Ross, Whitney Museum director, who has been involved with Viola's work since its beginning and, as the first museum curator of video art, has played a major role in the history and development of the field.

An extensive catalogue of works, exhibition history, bibliography, and chronology is also included. 272 illustrations, 198 in full-color.

Bill Viola rules my dreams. The exhibition at the Whitney stunned me and it stayed with me for a long time. I wish there were more images from his notebooks in this collection since the display of notes/inspirations were as fascinating as the installations themselves. You might have seen some of his work featured in the recent Nine Inch Nails US tour. If you want to see the zenith of video/installation art, you must spend some time with Bill Viola's work. (He's also a delight to meet).

        Book Description

Space, time, love, violence, and the human body: these are but some of the themes explored in this provocative book of state-of-the-art video installations. Each a separate and carefully delineated environment created through multimedia technologies, the eight installations described and illustrated here were produced by an accomplished international group of artists: Judith Barry and Brad Miskell, New York; Stan Douglas, Vancouver; Teiji Furuhashi, Kyoto; Gary Hill, Seattle; Chris Marker, Paris; Marcel Odenbach, Cologne; Tony Oursler, New York; and Bill Viola, Long Beach, California. In the related exhibition, which ran at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1995, the viewer entered the space and became part of what he or she observed. Vivid, complex, and endlessly inventive, these works demonstrate the range and sophistication of an art form born in the last decades of the 20th century.

First of all, "Chip" Delaney was not the author of this book, although he did write a nifty introduction relating science fiction to performance art. Barbara London's essay and chapters on the eight artists in the NYMOMA show are outstanding! Anyone curious about performance art AND any serious student of this vital topic would do well to consult this book. Each chapter focuses on an artist in this field, showing beautiful color and black & white photos of performance pieces; also included are extensive chronologies of their past shows and selective bibliographies about their work. This book is a "must" for any serious artist and art library.

                Book Description

In 1995 Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book was released to an unsuspecting public. Called "an unstoppable phenomenon" by its publisher, it became an immediate international best-seller. Now 2005 can be named the Year of Lady Cottington with the 10th anniversary of the publication that first exposed the world to the science of fairy exploration.

This volume records in authentic facsimile the latest incarnation of this notorious book along with eight additional pages and enhanced artwork throughout, virtually overflowing with freshly flattened fairies. Former Monty Python member Terry Jones and artist Brian Froud provide a new introduction to place the book in its proper perspective, offering insight into the book's often maligned historic relevance. As a bonus, included is an incriminating DVD showing rare film footage of the elderly Lady Cottington in her garden demonstrating her fairy-squashing technique, as well as a photo gallery, desktop wallpaper, and screensavers.

1 out of 5 stars Disgusting and Mildly Pornographic.......2007-09-05

I bought this book for my 10yo daughter who loves everything fairy. It is absolutely NOT for children, with text references to a sex-starved bishop ("shoved his tongue in my mouth") and incredibly ugly drawings of fairies. I ended up throwing it away, I was so disgusted with it. Fairy stuff should be beautiful, not hideous.

                2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing Fake.......2007-08-11

I had bought 'Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Letters' and I enjoyed it, although I took it with a pinch of salt. I then heard about the book, so when I saw it I got it with anticipation.

Unfortunately, for a real Faery believer like me, this book is a total farce. I am not at all bothered by the 'nude' drawings, I can honestly say that we have all seen much worse. But I do totally agree that this is not a book for children.

What I mainly object to is the fact that these books are introduced as real tales of a real person, "verified" by Mr Froud, certifying the authenticity of the manuscript, her house, archives, etc, etc. So for someone finding these books for the 1st time, and due to Mr Fraud's notoriety in the world of Faery as a firm believer and someone who respects Faeries, it is very disappointing to realize that this is a complete and vulgar 'creation' and lack of respect towards the Faeries.

It is just another publication for Mr Faud's art -see his FaeryOracle Card No 26, O! That Gnome, on the entry for 17/05/1907- at least he should've bothered to create new images! Furthermore, in general it is a mockery of Faery. Even as fiction it is stupid, just see the sudden change of handwriting, especially the "d" between 1902 and 1903, over the page.

But the worst joke is the DVD. Not only is the young girl's famous photograph on the book a waste of space -who on earth can see the faeries in it?!- but the film on the dvd where she casually turns around and there's a plastic leg sticking out of her book... boy, they could've had more imagination!! Now, the horrendous man dressed as a woman playing Lady Cottington is the nail on the coffin, he didn't even bother to sound like a woman. If they meant it as a joke, it totally failed. Instead, it completed the vulgarity of the whole exercise.

The worst thing is that we are so used to see Mr Fraud's name mentioned as a tool of credibility for countless publications. Well, this one has plummeted his reputation into the abyss of fakes.

5 out of 5 stars Book was so unique and different.......2007-07-05

The book arrived in two days. It was a gift to my niece, who loves fairies.
This book was unique and different than other fairy books, and had beautiful details on the pages.

2 out of 5 stars "Unsuspecting" is right........2007-04-09

I bought this book because I thought the premise was delightful. It sounded fun, wacky, creative, whimsical, and clever. That's why I'm giving it 2 stars.

What the book description fails to tell you is this is NOT a book for children. Nor for anyone who likes to keep their minds out of the gutter.

The drawings illustrate promiscuous nudity and sexual activity, including active body parts better left private. The text covers, at the very least, sexual advances and activities of clergy on victims, as well as obvious psychological problems of the characters in the book. That paragraph was as far as I read before I threw the book in the trash can.

I bought this book for my son's 11th birthday. You can imagine my surprise when my daughter found the pages wrapped in sealed, plain brown paper in the back. I'm just really glad I looked through it before giving it to him.

If there is a place on this page giving information as to the promiscuous content of the book, it is not noticeable enough for parents to see it, and I recommend a change in the advertising of the book and, I can only guess, the entire series.
