        Book Description

This update to Blue Revolution provides further evidence of the need to integrate land management decisionmaking into the process of integrated water resources management. It presents the key issues involved in finding the balance between the competing demands for land and water: for food and other forms of economic production, for sustaining livelihoods, and for conservation, amenity, recreation, and the requirements of the environment. It also advocates the means and methodologies for addressing them.

A new chapter, Policies, Power and Perversity, describes the perverse outcomes that can result from present, often myth-based, land and water policies which do not consider these land and water interactions. New research and case studies involving ILWRM concepts are presented for the Panama Canal catchments and in relation to afforestation proposals for the U.K. Midlands.

          Book Description

"The Blue Revolution" discusses the revolution that is underway in the development of new plans, strategies and designs for land use and all water related developments. Calder provides fresh information on land–water interactions that dispel much of the mythology that has hindered rational land use and water resource decision making in the past. This essential guide to recent breakthroughs in water resource management will prove indispensable to policymakers, researchers and students of hydrology, geography, biology and environmental sciences.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and technical.......2000-12-20

I was asked to review this book for fellow classmates back in grad school, and I'm glad I did. Not just entertaining in making the physics, economics, and politics of groundwater interesting, the book is thorough in it's treatment of technical issues which make it valuable insight for engineers, planners, public officials, and anyone else concerned with the limited resource of fresh water. Compared to many engineering textbooks on similar subjects, this book deserves a 5 (along with "Battling the Inland Sea" and "The Great Thirst").

A vivid chapter in the saga of the California water wars, The River Stops Here documents state and federal plans to flood the largest, most fertile valley in Mendocino County to send water south to Los Angeles. The eventual success of Richard Wilson, a rancher in Round Valley, to stop the project is the heart of this compelling story.

                  Book Description

                  * "The author is the undisputed world leader in this subject. The treatment is authoritative and magisterial" --Robert Goodland
                  * The definitive work on large dams--the world’s single most controversial, divisive and expensive development issue--essential reading
                  * Unmatched coverage of all aspects of large dams and development including economics, politics, environmental risk, energy, agriculture, and human displacement and resettlement

Viewed by some as symbols of progress and a necessary evil and by others as inherently flawed and destructive of ecosystems and societies, large dams remain the most contentious development issue on earth. Building on the work of the now defunct World Commission on Dams, Thayer Scudder, the world’s leading authority on large dams, weighs in on the debate with unprecedented authority.

Armed with a vast array of case studies and statistical data from Asia, including China and India, North America, Africa, and Latin America, Scudder charts the "middle way" forward by examining all aspects of the costs, benefits, and risks to ecosystems, societies and economies of large dam development projects. Employing the World Commission on Dams’ Seven Strategic Priorities, Scudder analyzes the structure of the decision-making process for water resource and energy development and the planning, implementation, and governance of assets when a large dam is selected as the best development option. He also assesses state-of-the-art procedures for addressing environmental, institutional, political, and social issues and tackles the highly contentious issue of dam-induced resettlement, illuminated by a statistical analysis of 50 cases.

Large dams are the focus of efforts to manage both water and energy resources. By 2000, the world had built 45,000. Yet they can also bring huge problems of environmental damage and social dislocation. Establishing the role of large dams is vital for the future and for sustainable forms of development.
This report is the outcome of extensive public policy and consultation efforts bringing governments, the private sector and civil society representatives into one process. It challenges prevailing assumptions and sets out clearly why dams are built and what impacts they have, for better and worse.
From this evidence it presents a new framework for developing energy and water resources and an agenda of seven priorities with guidelines for decision making. The result is essential reading for all parties involved with the future for large dam construction.

                        Book Description

This book introduces a large-scale water resources planning model which is capable of considering environmental impacts of water schemes included. The idea is to undertake an environmental impact assessment of each scheme and then transform the outcome of this exercise into a cost modifier which will subsequently be used in an economic planning model. For this purpose an integrated model is developed by which it is possible to carry out all planning jobs using the same user inferface. The model assesses environmental impacts based on user evaluations and these evaluations are transformed into an Environmental Impact Factor. This is done for both construction and operation phases so that both constructional and operating costs of a scheme should be adjusted in terms of its environmental friendliness. The model is equipped with all necessary facilities such as: user interface, entry control diagnostics, electronic help for the use of the model, impact and the scheme descriptions. The book also includes a large scale application of the model to demonstrate its capabilities. In this form, it is a research book rather than a textbook.
