This update to Blue Revolution provides further evidence of the need to integrate land management decisionmaking into the process of integrated water resources management. It presents the key issues involved in finding the balance between the competing demands for land and water: for food and other forms of economic production, for sustaining livelihoods, and for conservation, amenity, recreation, and the requirements of the environment. It also advocates the means and methodologies for addressing them.

A new chapter, Policies, Power and Perversity, describes the perverse outcomes that can result from present, often myth-based, land and water policies which do not consider these land and water interactions. New research and case studies involving ILWRM concepts are presented for the Panama Canal catchments and in relation to afforestation proposals for the U.K. Midlands.

Entertaining and technical.......2000-12-20

I was asked to review this book for fellow classmates back in grad school, and I'm glad I did. Not just entertaining in making the physics, economics, and politics of groundwater interesting, the book is thorough in it's treatment of technical issues which make it valuable insight for engineers, planners, public officials, and anyone else concerned with the limited resource of fresh water. Compared to many engineering textbooks on similar subjects, this book deserves a 5 (along with "Battling the Inland Sea" and "The Great Thirst").

Book Description

This book introduces a large-scale water resources planning model which is capable of considering environmental impacts of water schemes included. The idea is to undertake an environmental impact assessment of each scheme and then transform the outcome of this exercise into a cost modifier which will subsequently be used in an economic planning model. For this purpose an integrated model is developed by which it is possible to carry out all planning jobs using the same user inferface. The model assesses environmental impacts based on user evaluations and these evaluations are transformed into an Environmental Impact Factor. This is done for both construction and operation phases so that both constructional and operating costs of a scheme should be adjusted in terms of its environmental friendliness. The model is equipped with all necessary facilities such as: user interface, entry control diagnostics, electronic help for the use of the model, impact and the scheme descriptions. The book also includes a large scale application of the model to demonstrate its capabilities. In this form, it is a research book rather than a textbook.
