Waste of money.......2007-04-04
There are many web sites with better information. Take a look on them.
if you already have photoshop training... look to better books.......2007-03-04
The book is ok for what it is. One to two pages of how to do different tecniques to your photos...but if you have any training in basic photoshop you will know most of this stuff. Changing contrast? Making a picture dark enough to look like it is at night? Using layers to import one picture into another and masking out other parts? Using the clone tool to copy from one area and cover up another area? getting rid of red eye using the 'red eye tool'? Very simplistic stuff...and I am only a novice at photoshop. They do cover a section on using raw pictures from your digital camera... I think that covers about 10 pages. For the cost you could find great books on using photography and photoshop. Although visually filled with information with big pictures and small amounts of print...it is great in that area of display...but for the money I would suggest you get "Photoshop CS2 - One On One" by Deke (it will teach you all these tecniques (and comes with a CD of the artwork so you can work with what you are learning) plus teach you how to use PhotoShop. If you want to get a good book on Photo Retouching with Photoshop... I would reccomend "Commercial Photoshop Retouching - In the Studio" by Glenn Honiball. He has been doing Phtoo Retouching for 20+ years and teaches you to use tried but true tecniques that moset every professional uses without all the bells and whistles (you can use just about any photoshop program for these) These two books are a better bang for your buck.
Fantastic Photoshop Book From O'Reilly.......2006-08-15
O'Reilly hits another ball out of the park with this solid Photoshop book. I love the layout and paper chosen with this serious and the tutorials and examples are just as good!!
Employing a slick design, great writing, and nice, tight size, this book is useful for Photoshop users of all levels who want to learn how to take their images and photographs taken and make them shine!!
If you are a photographer on the level of a newbie/amateur or a seasoned pro, I highly recommend this guide so that you can learn how to make your pictures all the better for any purpose.
Wonderful book and easy to recommend!
***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Ok, but I expect better from O'reilly.......2005-12-28
Its often been said that there are several ways to do the same thing in photoshop. This book just gives you a few ways of doing them. My biggest complaint is that it appears noone proofed the photos. Some photo are of poor quality on 1 page and then fine on another. Another photo of showing a whitening effect shows someone with pink teeth. O'reilly is the best usually when it comes to IT books but this effort is subpar.
This is the book I've been waiting for!.......2005-12-05
At last! This is the book I've been waiting for! I've been on the hunt for a book that goes over practical photo editing with Photoshop-you know, how to alter colors, fix over/under exposure, remove distractions, etc. Most books I've come across are either designed for the Photoshop professional (meaning they leave out all the steps between A and Z), or they're too basic. This book is it-a step-by-step guide to Photoshop editing for the casual Photoshop user.
The author does an excellent job in identifying all the Photoshop tools you should be familiar with right off the bat. This introductory material is a great crash-course in Photoshop tools. This basic material forms a foundation for successfully understanding the rest of the book's material.
While there are tools and editing methods the author did not identify, I felt satisfied that the most important tools were not only identified but demonstrated in action. In my own photo editing attempts, I felt like I should be using certain tools, but didn't know how. Using some very illustrative photographs, the author works his way through using the curves tool, the levels tool, masks, layers, etc. The author provides the reader with the tools s/he needs to successfully complete the most common photo editing assignments.
I would highly recommend this book for digital photographers. Huggins' book is now the favorite among my digital photography books.

One of the best..........2005-11-20
I have read a lot of books on PhotoShop Elements but this is probably the best for my skill level (beginner - intermediate). The 220 pages are packed with great ideas and techniques - all well displayed and simply explained.

Using a surprisingly complete software package........2006-12-07
There is no question that Photoshop is the professional's choice when it comes to digital photograph manipulation. But along the way it has gotten very big, very expensive. Each new edition has hundreds of new features. But when you look at the new features, there aren't very many that you're likely to find useful.
So Adobe decides to made a de-featured version of the software. They call it Photoshop Elements. Time goes on, and with each new edition of the Elements it gets more and more features. It's almost the equivalent of the Photoshop of just a few years ago. And at Amazon Elements is $79.99 full Photoshop is $579.99, a flat $500 more.
Look pretty carefully at Photoshop Elements if you're thinking of this kind of software. It just might do everything you need to do.
How to look at what Elements does, this book will tell you. It's a complete guide to using Elements. So learn Elements to use, or study it just to see if it will do your job requires, here's the place to start.
Sample files must be purchased.......2006-10-21
Here is one of those books that provide you with some creative ideas using Photoshop Elements but does not provide the sample files to follow along. Instead the author gives you a website where the files can be purchased. Although the book has some good ideas this fact alone gives it a low rating.
My suggestion is to make sure sample fiels are included in any book that gives tutorials on how to create new creations.. A Thing I overlooked.

Great book on general photography!.......2007-01-16
This is a great book on photography that really works for me. It's a concise course on the general aspects such as depth of field, aperture speed, composition, filters, landscape and macro photography. What I really liked about it is that it's a relatively thin book, but every page counts. If you're new to photography or you want to get into it more, this is a winner. If you're looking for a specialized course on digital, look elsewhere.

Pictures show what is possible with Photoshop.......2007-02-11
I would agree with both reviewers comments above: the book shows what you can do with Photoshop, but doesn't walk you through what menus to use to accomplish it. I think that is great! No more worrying about looking for moved menus or changed tools as new versions of Photoshop are released. I learned a ton from this book and am having a great time using these techniques to enhance the photos I've taken.
Next to useless because there are no sample files........2004-03-23
This book is attractively designed, well-written, and nicely edited. There is a great deal of practical and clearly explained information. The problem? Mr. Beckham or Lark Books decided to not include samples of the photographs he uses to illustrate his tutorials. There is no CD and there is no website from where the pictures can be downloaded. This is unforgiveable in a book that presents itself as a learning text. Curiously, Mr. Beckham's website references a resource center for the book and refers the reader to a URL on page 4 of the book. There may be URL in the British version of the book (Mr. Beckham lives in England) but there isn't in the U.S. version being sold Amazon. This would be a five star book if the images were available to practice on. As it is, it gets one star for just being a pretty publication.
Show Me Don't tell Me.......2004-01-13
How many Photoshop Elements books have I flipped through that are absolutely fat with pages and pages of detailed text... yet have no power to inspire me to action?
Barry has crafted an elegant primer on Photoshop Elements replete with lush, color-soaked photos that serve as irresistable examples for my own experiments... icons, as it were, for my own creativity. As an experienced Elements user, I have already read several how-to books that explain every button and menu in rote detail; Barry's approach is much, much simpler. I lingered long over his gorgeous examples and much more quickly returned to my own photographs with envious results. To be fair, this is a perfect book to SHOW whereas Deke's Photoshop Elements for Dummies (bland black and white!) is positioned to TELL. If you are completely new to Elements and demand excruciating detail, then a companion book might be in order. Otherwise, be inspired and get on with more quickly and easily taking your pictures to confident new levels.
Enjoy!

One of the best books on photography!.......2005-01-11
The is by far one of the best books that I have read on improving photography. What it is not: It does not deal much with equipments or is not meant to be a field guide. What it is: It is one of the comprehensive books on compositional ideas. Even though it is published many years ago, the compositional rules still apply. This book definetely improved my photographic skills. Recommended. It is sad that the publisher does not print this book anymore.
An Elementary Photography Course in One Volume.......2002-02-17
Richly illustrated with hundreds of how-to photographs, nearly all of which are in colour, this book lives up to its title. Forty-two sections in six chapters begin with the most important topic, purpose, and describe in detail the topics of composition, perspective, colour, lighting, movement, and finally, a brief description of the mechanics of the (film) camera. Although there is some discussion of film and the technical aspects of photography, the bulk of the contents is concerned with the more universal elements of observation and of awareness by the photographer. This book is a tremendous help to the beginner who wants to take good photos, and to the intermediate-level photographer who wants to take better photos. It is best summarised in its subtitle, A Guide to Seeing and Making Better Pictures. *Note: this book contains some nudity.

Better than his other two but still stinks.......2007-08-18
I'm disenchanted by this author. I bought all three of his books here on Amazon and thank goodness I bought them used or else I'd be livid! What a waste of time. No such 'trick(s)' in this book! Just common sense stuff that you already know. It's all a marketing ploy to get you to buy a book that promises psychological tricks but when you read it, there's no tricks, but rather plain & simple parenting. Oooooh boy! That's so hard to do I need a psychologist to tell me how it's done.
Big fun! Huge blessing!.......2005-08-29
I don't know what I used to do without some of these helpful little gems! This is such a fun book to read that one almost forgets that it is full of useful, well-researched advice for parents. The best part of all is that the advice works! The financial investment is minimal. The enjoyment and rewards are invaluable.
Great thoughts for Daddy on the go!.......2005-06-05
I travel alot and my wife gave me this book for airplane reading. At first I laughed at the title, but I found after reading, it gave lots of good pointers for when I am with my 3 children. I'm not home to apply these principles for the day-to-day activities like my wife, but it really helped me maximize my quality time by providing me with quick responses to situations that I may not have been prepared for. Are you going to write a book to help me when they are teenagers?
thoughts from a first-time mom.......2005-05-05
i'm a first-time mom and have realized over the past year that these primal little creatures definitely have one up on us new parents. it's good to know there's someone on MY side with tips and tricks -- really just good common sense -- to help even the playing field somewhat (pun intended). dr. buff's practical, real-world tips offer help from babyhood to adolescence, so i'll be keeping this guide handy as my toddler grows!
Bought as a gag gift, and man, what a joke it is.......2005-04-27
There's nothing new in this book, and no 'psychological tricks' either--it's full of the same old regurgitated bad advice other know-it-all would-be childcare experts have offered. His storytelling advice alone is laughable, and clearly comes from a person that does not often engage in storytime with kids.
The worst offense, however is the shoddy fact-checking that allowed an urban legend to slip into the book--that old myth about kidnappers whisking children away into bathrooms for a quick haircut, dye job and change of clothes before making for the exit. (Don't believe me? Check out Snopes.com and read for yourself.)
Don't waste your money on this book, just use a little common sense.
