Office 2000 offers the strongest programming features ever, but in order to exploit them to their fullest you'll need some help. The Microsoft Office 2000 Developer's Guide compresses author D.F. Scott's years of experience into just under 1,000 pages of programmer-friendly text.

This book builds your knowledge from the ground up. You'll get a complete explication of the features of Visual Basic for Applications, from entry-level concepts to getting VBA integrated smoothly with your applications. The second section continues this thread in four different directions, one for each of the main Office components--Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint. You won't get a series of lists of instructions, since programming is a matter of adapting solutions to unique problems. You will get a firm grasp of the powerful tools included with VBA, along with which should serve you well in your development process.

Summaries outlining key points keep the information fresh, and the CD-ROM contains the source code mentioned in the text as well as the JWalk Power Utility Pak and other tools. If it's time for you to explore the depths of your software, make sure you have the Microsoft Office 2000 Developer's Guide on hand to keep you on track. --Rob Lightner

Book Description

Microsoft® Office 2000 is much more than the sum of its popular applications. Behind the scenes of its now commonplace menus, toolbars, and dialog panels lies a full-featured programming language. Visual Basic for Applications enables you to extend the functionality of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access, making them into the applications your business demands. With very clear instructions and carefully chosen examples, D.F. Scott shows you how to tap into the hidden power of the Office 2000 Object Model and rebuild your applications into powerful tools that fit your business and your workplace as though they were written exclusively for you.

1 out of 5 stars Hard to read.......2001-12-08

This book is extremly hard to read. It does not cater to the novice or professional programmer. Basically, it is the most confusing book I have ever read. It tries to use senseless analogies to make obvious points, which were probably added to "pad" the book.
AVOID THIS BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars A book worth twice the price!.......1999-09-21

What I have needed in a VB/VBA/Office computer book was what this book gives! What I have needed was someone to break-down, and explain VB code. This book does it. To be sure, it is not a fast read. There is so much information. I reconmend this book for Visual Basic programers as well as Office Developers. In the field of computer books, this one is a grand slam, home run!

5 out of 5 stars Good Reference........1999-09-07

The book is a bit of a rehash for me since most of the commands are accessible through Access and that is my primary program. However this is one of the few books that attempts to take on the Powerepoint object model, eventhough it is a bit unstable. If you are looking for a reference for the basic possibilities of all the programs and the unique objects of the office suite rather than the programs themselves this is a good book. Definitly a good starter book!

Visual QuickStart Guides, as a rule, are concise and easy to follow, and they distinguish the things you want to do with a program from the things the program is merely capable of doing. Outlook 2000 for Windows: Visual QuickStart Guide applies these excellent traits to Microsoft Outlook 2000, the powerful but sometimes confusing electronic mail client and personal information manager that ships with Microsoft Office 2000. This book shows you, with illustrated procedures, exactly what you need to do your work with Outlook under Windows.

Striking a remarkable balance of presentation styles that ought to appeal to all kinds of learners, this book shows how to do everything in words and pictures. Not only are there prose statements of the steps to follow but also screen shots, integral to the presentation, that make it clear what you're supposed to do and what you should see as a result. Even potentially hairy tasks, such as establishing a distribution list to get messages out to an entire department, are explained with aplomb (the options and alternate approaches get attention without muddying the situation). The index is good too, though it assumes the reader is familiar with Outlook terminology: You can't find "to-do list," but the entry for "Task form" will lead you to the proper page. Overall, this book is a winner. --David Wall

Topics covered: Details of Outlook 2000 for Windows from the perspective of novice and intermediate users, creating and managing items and folders, retrieving and reading electronic mail messages, sending e-mail messages, creating one-time and recurring appointments, and customizing the program.

Microsoft Outlook 2000 can do a lot on its own, but its real value--particularly for organizations--comes in its considerable capacity for customization. Sams Teach Yourself Outlook 2000 Programming in 24 Hours provides you with the programming skills you need to do valuable, productivity-enhancing Outlook 2000 customization work, even if you've never written code in your life.

This book covers the full range of Outlook 2000 programming skills, starting with the Forms Designer and the essentials of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) program structure and syntax (including data structures, control structures, input/output mechanisms, and events). After laying a base of skills, it explains the Outlook 2000 object model in some depth, documenting techniques for customizing the interface; reacting to user behavior; and working with stores, folders, and items.

This guide mostly teaches by example. Typically, it sets a goal--building an Outlook-based vacation-request system, for example--and walks the reader through the building process with a combination of prose and code listings. One shortcoming: there's no companion CD-ROM, so readers are stuck typing code by hand. In addition to the prose and code listings, there are plenty of tables that document the details of various pieces of the object model. --David Wall

    Book Description

Sams Teach Yourself Outlook 2000 Programming in 24 Hours shows you how to build forms in both the Outlook forms designer and VBA. This book also shows you how to write programming code both behind those forms and at the application level to accomplish tasks expected of a personal information manager like Outlook. The examples emphasize PIM activities such as creating a follow-up call for a contact, managing standard replies and deploying Outlook forms and applications. The author describes good programming practices including naming conventions, debugging and commenting. By the end of the book, you'll be able to confidently handle Outlook objects and know how to explore the application's programming capabilities to extend it further.

3 out of 5 stars It's all there (almost) ... just a little hard to find.......2002-05-09

Sue Mosher is a very readable writer and there's no doubt she knows her stuff inside and out. Most books in the Teach Yourself in 24 Hours series are beginner-intermediate introductions to the subject. That's true with Mosher's book - however, she manages to cover an impressive breadth of material in 24 small lessons.

The problem is finding the material. This book could use a revamp in structure (I hope the publishers of the new 2002 edition are listening). There IS a good table of contents and a satisfactory index, but it's still devilishly hard to find stuff in this book, and to see how it fits together. The VBA/VBScript distinction is probably the biggest problem. The beginning Outlook programmer, even a programmer with experience in other languages, will not easily discern why Mosher talks about VBScript on one page and VBA on another. VBScript and VBA are distinct tools, with very different applications in Outlook programming. Mosher makes that point, but not clearly enough, and the struture of the book obscures the point. In the real world, "Outlook Form Design" could refer to VBScript or VBA programming. In Mosher's book, it refers only to the former - which is confusing and misleading. Instead of "Outlook Form Design", the first section should be titled "Customizing Default Outlook Forms with VBScript". The second section could be called "Designing New Outlook Forms with VBA" (although "Design with VBA", the current title, isn't bad).

There are lots of practical examples in the book. As said above, the breadth of this book is amazing (even if depth suffers a little as a result), and there are pertinent examples for just about every topic covered. In order to facilitate a more unified structure, it might be helpful to give examples that are related to each other and form a single, functional "Outlook Application". That may help the reader understand how seemingly unrelated material fits together, and would certainly better point up the distinction between VBScript and VBA.

This Teach Yourself Book (like others in the series) has a few typos - nothing too serious...

Great book - just needs some reorganizing.

Consise, to the point, well laid out hour long lessons on unleashing the power of Outlook forms. Recommended for both the novice (like myself) and even experts will pick up useful tips.

5 out of 5 stars Get Outlook to do anything!.......2001-05-05

Although this title is introductory in nature, it alerts you to how powerful Outlook really is. The book does a good job of teching the newbie developer/programmer the basics of the trade as far as Outlook is concerned, while showing the experienced developer who has no Outlook experience what Outlook is capable of. It also makes an excellent introduction to software development in general b/c you end up with bonafide programs that are easy to modify and that you can actually use right away. Looking forward to more Outlook books by Mrs. Mosher.

2 out of 5 stars Disorganized and light on details.......2000-08-10

When I purchased this book, I was expecting to really learn how to program Outlook. What I got was a choppy book that doesn't cover the subject in much depth whatsoever.

This book suffers on a number of fronts. I think much of the blame lies on the publisher with only some of it on the author. The fact is, Sams has created a whole "Teach yourself X in 24 hours" series. Each book in the series uses 24 small chapters that you can read very quickly. This format is a downfall because it artificially forces an author into a fixed format. You must have 24 chapters, one per "hour." Each chapter must be very short to avoid exceeding an hour's reading time. Many of the chapters in this book were less than 20 pages each. With tables and screen shots, that doesn't leave much room for prose. Indeed, with these restrictions, an author cannot spend a lot of time on complex subjects or create chapters at appropriate locations dictated by the material.

As a result of the format, Mosher has produced a book that only introduces the subject of Outlook forms, Outlook VBScript programming, and Outlook VBA programming without much depth. Many of the chapters are simply a rehash of VBScript and VBA reference material without much expository description. While this material is appropriate for inclusion, it burns about seven chapters out of 24. As a result, there isn't much room left over for other things.

Another problem is that the book is choppy. It jumps back and forth between VBScript and VBA almost at random within chapters making it very difficult to read. If you are only interested in Outlook forms, for instance, you have to wade through a large amount of VBA material searching for the VBScript material. You can't just skip a few VBA-only chapters.

While descriptions of both VBScript and VBA are appropriate for the book, the constant context switches also make it very difficult to use the book in any reference manner. After looking up something in the book, one can't determine whether the material applies to VBScript or VBA without rereading whole sections of the chapter to pick up the context.

Finally, the largest fault that I see with this book is a lack of deep examples. Most of the examples are very, very small and disconnected from each other. I would have liked to see more material on VBScript and forms since that is the easiest way to create applications within Outlook itself.

In the end, I get the feeling that Mosher understands the material but didn't have enough paper to say anything useful. Forced with a difficult choice of burning pages on VBScript and VBA tutorials or producing in-depth examples, she chose the tutorial material and produced an acceptable introductory book that leaves that vetran programmer wanting more.

While focusing on Visual Basic and VBA, the book also discusses WSH, Visual C++, Java/Visual J++, and Windows CE development, as well as ADSI, CDO, and COM add-ins. All code is included on the CD-ROM.

1 out of 5 stars covers VBA only.......2001-03-07

The book is advertised as "100% comprehensive", as THE Outlook bible. I don't think this is justified. There is no advice on how to write COM add-ins or automation code in C++, though this is rather common for professional applications. The author doesn't mention it at all. I can't judge if the book is a good VBA reference, but is certainly not a comprehensive approach to Outlook.

5 out of 5 stars Popular and Not Popular -- War in the Air WWI.......2003-08-28

The Diary of Lt John M Grider, KIA in France, 1918, as amended and edited by his friend E.W. Springs. Springs believed it would add to the value of the book if he kept it anonymous and mysterious. The book was serialized in a popular magazine in 1926 and created a scandal because it depicts the American boys as womanizers, drinkers, etc. (the racist attitudes of the flyers caused no comment at the time). Later Griders sisters forced Springs to admit that the book was based on their brothers diary, although apparently Springs also included considerable material from his own letters home. Springs was a Princeton graduate from a wealthy family. He was a top pilot and received the DFC, shooting down 5 enemy planes. He wrote some other books but none as popular as this one. This book is gritty and tough, and depicts very well the descent from idealistic recruit to hardened and battle weary veteran.

4 out of 5 stars War Birds review.......2002-01-08

War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator is a fascinating portrait of training and combat for a WWI aviator. It is unclear to me whether the book consists of an actual diary, or is a dramatization written by a friend based on letters written by the aviator main character (see http://www.theaerodrome.com/aces/usa/springs.html). The aviator was a real person with real faults (he makes some racist statements), and this makes the story all the more personal. The story reminded me of Catch-22, but is more touching because the triumphs and deaths actually occurred.

5 out of 5 stars The truth about the Air War of WWI.......2000-09-30

Although little is written of the truth to the Air War in WWI, it is often offered to history as a time of chivalry amoungst the "Upper Class Gentleman" of WWI. Most sucessful pilots, that being anymore that 5 kills, were showered with metals and given the highest honors from their fatherlands. Deeming them, The Knights of The Skies. The truth is far from reality. This book of one young man's personal, daily recolection in it's original, unaltered text, depicts the Air War as it really was. Not only can you feel the excitement and astonishment in his mind as he earns his wings in flight school, you also experience the sadness and despair as he watches his squadmates perish and learns the veracity of war and death. Illustrated by Clayton Knight, whose sketches and paintings went on to become famous after the war, this book is a must for anyone who is interested in the true reality of The Air War of WWI.

4 out of 5 stars why don't they identify the author?.......2000-09-29

It was obvious from the wealth of information of those who served with the author that the identity is known. Why not disclose who wrote the diary? We share the experiences. We watch the aviator transform from a fun loving barn stormer to a machine that can only function when airborne. The end comes and you know it is coming, the author is crumbling, his attitude has changed, he operates by reflex and his judgement is impaired. (not by booze but battle fatigue has taken over} This is too real . . .

              5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......1998-05-19

Factual every day history of the air war of WWI. This should be required reading for all History Buffs.

5 out of 5 stars Gold Standard for Springs of Texas.......2006-03-06

This book from the Texas A&M University Press is a second edition of the original version (1981) which has been out of print and very rare for many years. Helen Besse took up the challenge of locating a copy of the book, updating some of the material, and arranging for its reprinting. This book is literally the Bible for information about most of the past and current springs in 183 out of 254 counties in Texas. She is working on completing a Volume 2 which will include many springs in Central Texas which were not included in Volume 1. The book presents the results of many years of extensive research conducted by Gunnar Brune until his passing cut short the completion of all the springs in Texas.
Each spring's location, historical flow rate, elevation, geological and habitat characteristic, as well as interesting historical anecdotes by local citizens about the springs are given. Many excellent maps place the springs in a historical context from the 15th Century to the present. This is the first book one who is interested in learning about springs in Texas should read.

WHO COULD FORGET THE MOST INFAMOUS MANHUNT IN HISTORY?!

The Texas Seven escaped from Texas' Connally Maximum Security Prison on December 13, 2000, and killed a police officer along the way. Among them were charismatic leader George Rivas, Larry Harper, Keith Newbury, Patrick Murphy, Joseph Garcia, Michael Rodriguez and young Randy Halprin, tagged by the media as The Texas Seven. A van waited for them nearby and their cross-country flight began. The search for The Texas Seven spanned over six weeks and was said to be the largest manhunt in U.S. history involving the FBI, ATF and U.S. Marshall, capturing round-the-clock media attention. These are the raw confessions of Texas Seven's Joseph Garcia, of sins he has committed and sins committed against him from the time he was born. The finished product is a street-smart, heart-breaking rhapsody that could only have been written by the one who suffered all these things: Joseph Christopher Garcia.

                    Book Description

"It is well known that Southern Texas possesses a greater variety of Mineral Waters than any other country on the globe" enthused a promotion for one of Texas' many watering spas of the nineteenth century. Though most are closed and nearly forgotten today, Texas spas and resorts once drew thousands of visitors from across the country, seeking healing of body and spirit in the rejuvenating mineral waters. This book offers the first comprehensive history of Texas' healing springs. Janet Valenza tracks the rise, popularity, and decline of the "water cure" from the 1830s to the present day. She follows the development of major spas and resorts, such as Mineral Wells and Indian Hot Springs near El Paso, as well as of smaller, family-run springs. She also describes how mineral waters influenced patterns of settlement, transportation routes, commerce, and people's attitudes toward the land. Period photos and quotes from those seeking cures offer vivid glimpses into the daily life at the springs, which Valenza lists and describes county-by-county in the appendix.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for "Alamophiles".......2001-11-22

I had the pleasure to work with Tim Todish, his brother Terry and Ted Spring on this book. They have done an excellent job in bringing the Alamo and the Texas Revolution into perspective. Covering such a broad topic took many, and I do mean MANY hours of research to put it all together. This book has set a standard for future works and it will be hard to top it in quality. I am pleased to have been a small part of the project.

3 out of 5 stars Alamo Sourcebook 1836.......2001-11-09

The main strength lies in pulling together not only sources such as the people and events themselves, but movies and music about the Alamo as well. I love a well illustrated book and this one has several. Unfortunately this is the book's weakness. Higher quality illustrations and maps could really have made the presentation that much more appealing.

4 out of 5 stars This provides a unique compendium on the legendary battle........1998-07-01

The Alamo sources book combines a wealth of information of every aspect of the Alamo. The author ranges from a description of the mission, through an account of the Texas Mexican War and the fall of the Alamo to participant account and cinematic renderings of the story. Anyone from a reader with a casual interest to a serious student of the battle will find this work both informative and entertaining. A wealth of illustrations accompany the text; some of these border on carictature, but most are well done; drawings of the structure and of weapons and equipment are quite good. The author draws on recent archaeolgical finds and test research to update and correct older information. He includes useful discussions of popular myth while providing an excellent overview of fact. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the Alamo or in the Texas revolution; it also reprresent a useful model for crafting a good historical overview of a particular incident.
