A book that clearly explains the principles of jazz soloing. Logically Logically organized, with hundreds of musical examples, this method is the result of many years of Ted's teaching and research.
Customer Reviews:
Any Ted Greene is most welcome.......2007-05-07
This is one of four published guitar books by Ted Greene. Ted was one of the Great guitarists and a superior teacher. This volume is extremely good. Anything by Ted Greene is required reading.
A scale for every chord.......2006-12-26
There are several scales patterns per chord pattern or chord strummed. Actually, you only need to learn one scale pattern. Ted Greene provides you with at least one scale per chord to solo over. What's interesting is learning how to combine four or five scale patterns so you can play up and down the neck (over one chord). This book will provide you with all the elements needed to solo over most chords. I already had an idea of what to play, but I didn't have information on the many arpeggios you could play over each chord. Ted gives you sample arpeggios to play over each chord through several scale patterns. What I like about this book is knowing you can link four patterns together (over one chord) and play up and down the neck. If you're having problems with your solos, buy this book.
An unassuming but important book........2006-08-04
Ted Greene's marvelous books have become staples in guitar instruction, starting with the famous "Chord Chemistry" (Ted frequently referred to the book as "Chord Catastrophe").
"Single Note Soloing, Volume 1" is the perfect book for those that are interested in jazz and have experience playing the guitar, but want to learn the ins and outs of jazz phrasing. The musical examples in this book (all in notation, no TAB here) are great and Ted's comments include a wealth of information about left and right hand tips, phrasing ideas, and how to use the examples. A pleasant "side effect" of going through this book is your sight-reading will noticably improve, especially in the higher positions (such as the 7th, 8th, and 9th). And for those who might already know the theory involved, it makes a for a great warmup and provides a refresher course in important fundamentals. Even though I knew most of the theory in the book when I first went through it, it was a great learning experience because it filled up the holes in my knowledge, some that I didn't even know were there. That is part of the greatness of Ted Greene. Never does the book have a pretentious or snobby air to it, and his thoughts are always encouraging and inspiring when you read them. Many guitar books create more holes than fill them, because the authors themselves do not have the needed grasp of the fundamentals. There's no need to worry about that here, as Ted was a master at learning (and therefore, teaching) things the right way.
Overall this has to be one of the best books on the subject that I've gone through, especially for a book that is guitar-specific. If you could only choose one book on jazz scales for guitar, choose this one.
The best teacher ever.......2006-03-19
I studied with Ted Greene in the early 70's at the age of eighteen. At the time I was also taking lessons with George Van Eps and shared my lesson materials with Ted while he worked on Chord Chemistry, the first of his books which was originally published in the 70's and revised later. Any electric guitarist should have all of his books period! These are not fancy riffs or solos but the most creative and best organized series of works on jazz guitar ever written. Most think of Ted as a finger style jazz player. However, when I jammed with him there was no one faster or smoother with a single note flat pick. He simply didn't go in for flash. Also, he could outplay anyone in any style, rock, folk, country, and yes classical music. In fact, when I knew him he always carried a copy of the Bach Chorales around which he studied to perfect his chord voicing system. If you are serious about the guitar and play at the intermediate or better level you have to learn this material.
Worth the effort.......2002-07-26
If you don't have a foundation in the basics of music theory and some playing experience go find a good teacher and work your up to and through these books. These books are jazz based but everything in them can be applied to any other style. Totally worth the effort.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book, but don't expect the old Real Book here.......2007-09-24
If you're looking to this book as an updated version of the old "Real Book", you will likely be disappointed. While there are a few tunes in common, most of the tunes in the old "Real Book" are not present here, replaced by newer (sometimes more complicated) compositions. The format and calligraphy in the book, while most excellent, is noticeably more formal than that of the old "Real Book", and may take some getting used to.
THAT SAID, if you disregard the implicit connection to the old "Real Book", this book stands on its own quite well. It IS an extremely well-prepared collection of jazz tunes, some of which you would be hard-pressed to find transcribed anywhere else (e.g., "Waterwings"). This doesn't really replace the old "Real Book", but it supplements it nicely.
If you could have but one fake book ---.......2000-06-08
This is one of the best. Easy to read during a gig. Very comprehensive. Plenty of tunes to keep you busy memorizing them for years. One book cannot have every tune, but this a great start. I also recommend volumes 2 and 3.
The Bible of Jazz sheet music!.......1997-11-02
This book has hundreds of pages filled with all kinds of jazz tunes, written in the clearest font possible. Most tunes have the basic chord changes and general solo's, but some are "as played by ..." and may even have the bass, piano or rythyms section written out, if it's particularly special. A must for people playing jazz from sheet music. If you could ever finish this book, you can get versions two and three both filled only with new, completely different songs!
Book Description
Volume 1 introduces the intermediate pianist to the basic chord-types used in jazz, from major and minor triads to seventh and ninth chords. Other topics include: Chord/scale relationships, modes, broken chord and scale patterns, pentatonic and blues scales, walking bass lines, Latin rhythms and bass lines, the diatonic cycle, secondary dominants, II V I sequences, horizontal and vertical improvisation, tritone substitution, two-handed voicings, rootless voicings, technical exercises and fingering, accompaniment styles, ear-training, discography (suggested listening). 28 pieces by the author appear alongside special arrangements of well-known jazz standards, including: Autumn Leaves * Fly Me to the Moon * In a Sentimental Mood * Mannenberg * On Green Dolphin St (Part 1) * Ornithology * Song for My Father * Straight No Chaser * Take the A Train. Also included are transcribed solos by Thelonious Monk and Horace Silver, an invaluable source of authentic jazz techniques.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-08-21
There is a lot of harmony books out, but this one is the most concise I've ever seen. The difference is, here you find what is really played in jazz unlike the useless standard stuff which normally fills hundreds of pages in most harmony books such as all the pattern-stuff derived from theory facts or e.g. II-V-I mathematics. And one more thing, you can dig it! Buy it!
eeexcellent.......2007-01-30
even being an educated musician with a firm grasp of your craft - there is always new inspiration in Bert Ligons book - I recommend them all!! Full of examples, great ideas and good and sound explanations.
Theory & Practice Married: as they should be.......2005-10-07
A common theme across all of Bert Ligon's books is that they are comprehensive and rooted in the reality of jazz. What do I mean by that? They are comprehensive in that their coverage of the subject area is full: you have an excellent single source of information. Rooted in reality? Whilst they cover the theory of jazz they do it in a practical way: a lot of analysis of actual improvisations has been done, and is used to illustrate the ideas. There are many exercises and the examples can be used as exercises. Any of the books could easily double as a source of jazz vocabulary.
You can see the contents pages elsewhere in Amazon. Each chapter explains things clearly.
It is not a mistake to buy any of his books. I have four. Years ago a departing friend said to me `I'm glad I met you.' That's how I feel about these books: they are a Jazz-send.
JAZZ THEORY RESOURCES
I recommend buying both Volume I and II. Essentially the tome was split into two rather than publish it in a single volume. The page numbering in Volume II continues from Volume I.
Volume I starts with a review of Basic Theory Material, Chapter 2 covers Rhythm, Chapter 3 Basic Tonal Materials and so on. The point is that `Basic' doesn't mean a superficial treatment: it means a comprehensive helpful analysis of things you must know.
Volume II carries on where Volume I left off: it is not `Part 2 Advanced': it is a continuation.
There is an immense amount theory and practical application in these two books. I came across them by accident when doing some research and bought them immediately. They are on my instant access bookshelf!

Typical yaoi drama (not a bad thing!).......2007-04-29
I got this today, finished reading it today, and ordered two more volumes today. I really liked this. Somehow the drama was...enticing. There were a lot of emotions flying around and undertones of romance. Seemed like it could end at just volume 1 like a oneshot, but the art is great and I really want to see how the characters and the story develop because they sure are under-developed in this volume. Yes, some non-consensual physical acts are displayed, but nothing particularly graphic (meaning you can't tell if anything is anatomically correct or not). Maybe someone who is more of a beginner yaoi reader or a boys love reader will want to shy away from this.
Jazz Rev.......2007-02-14
Angsty with issues of dubious consent or even non-con at the very beginning, if you can get past that the story reminds me of a girls teenage romance. The handsome doctor fixes the boy, the boy becomes infatuated/obsessed, dubious consent with doctor, doctor goes angsty, boy winds up actually in love with doctor, doctor is still angsty and leaves the country, boy chases after, angstily happily ever after. Very cliche story but the art work is wonderful impo and the story details are actually done in such a way that you don't notice the story is actually cliched because you are so drawn into the story and the atmosphere itself. If you have money to spare and your into gay romance, I'd say buy it.
much better than people say.......2006-04-25
i'm kind of surprised that there are so many negative reviews to this, but most of them are people who are expecting something typically romantic and this book is much more unique and challenging (and thus interesting to me) than the usual schoolboy yaoi you may be used to. the summary is a bit misleading since the story is equally from the point of view of the doctor. yes, there is forced sex, but these issues are addressed and within the context of the story they add depth. what people are missing is what comes out in the later parts of the book: that the doctor feels cold and passionless throughout his life and his interactions w/ others, and so when the younger man came onto him he was somehow moved by the other man's passion. even though the man's love intimidates him, is dangerous, and is even on the edge of violence, it also somehow excites him and he finds himself drawn to the man's fire. i'm def. looking forward to seeing how this relationship progresses. for those willing to explore something out of the ordinary, this is a memorable book. for those looking for something familiar, skip this.
Don't judge a book by it's summary . . . .......2006-04-15
After reading the summary on the back of the book, I was really looking forward to reading this series; it sounded like a nice little romance story and it started out just the same. It wasn't until the actual relationship started that I realized that this was absolutely not the case.
The whole thing reads like a typical "battered wife" scenario with the younger main character raping the older and just all around treating him like garbage while the older eventually becomes convinced that he's in love with the younger. It's basically a sick attempt to romanticize rape and there are some serious "WTF?!" moments throughout the first volume.
Besides the overall sickening plotline, the timeline is choppy and hard to follow at best and, as was stated in other reviews, there was no character development. The two main characters seem to be emotionally ADD at times while other characters just appear and disappear at random with no explanation as to how or why.
Nice read.......2006-04-06
Good graphics, nice character development, nice little storyline for yaoi. It wasn't a read that I would've stayed up all night reading, but it was a good buy.

The perfect offbeat travel guide for NJ.......2003-12-30
A great read for fans of Weird NJ, regional history and the offbeat in general, Peter Genovese's book is both entertaining and informative. Unlike Weird NJ, you won't find much about ghost stories, UFO sightings and urban myths in "New Jersey Curiosities"; instead, the focus is on real, specific locations that have down-to-earth yet interesting histories.
One of the nice features of this book is that the curiosities are organized by region, so you can easily look up the oddities in your area. Genovese also includes specific directions to aid in sightseeing. One area of improvement would be to include more pictures, but other than that, it's a superb travel guide.
a normal persons "weird NJ".......2003-12-28
Being a fan of Weird NJ for several years, I recently decided to try out other books that chornicle the strange, unusual and the funny stuff that can be found within our borders. I found this to be a very decent, relatively comprehensive guide to those weird roadside items of the book's title.
The author, Peter Genovese, is a writer for the Star Ledger, and runs a regular series about good places to grab lunch at, and has also written several other NJ based books about such things as diners, the jersey shore, and a previous book on weird stuff in NJ. He clearly has qualifications to write such a book, and it's obvious he enjoys Weird NJ, as many of the items referenced can be found in Weird NJ.
In fact, this book is really a cross between Genovese Munchmobile column and the Weird NJ Roadside Guide. This book really is not comparable to the Weird NJ book recently published by the Marks, in that they are two different books. The Weird NJ book is all about stories and myths, and although you can go out and visit some of the things referenced in the book, it isn't meant as a travel guide. This book is, and it functions quite well. It features many things not found in the Weird NJ Guide and really does deserve a spot on any weird NJ fans book shelf.
Some people like his first roadside guide better, while others found that book totally useless/. I can't compare the two books but I can say that this book is thoroughly enjoyable and worth the money.
Pluses: interesting trivia and factoids about NJ
minuses: pictures are B&W
Wonderful New Jersey Fact Filled Book.......2003-11-10
Great book to find awhole lot of stuff about New Jersey. Would highly reccomend it to any Jersey person. Great to remember the weird quirks of Nj.
A fan of Weird NJ stories? Then this book is for you.......2003-10-06
For anyone who likes the concept of Weird NJ but feel the folklore and reader letters are fiction, this is a great non-fiction book for you. It's about the many quirky things in the wacky garden state, broken down into three sections-- North Central and South. Besides summaries on Lucy the Elephant, and and the blind waiter diner in Hasbrouck Heights, the book also includes little known fun facts about the state, that we are home to the nation's only on-campus diner, and that the oldest log cabin in the country. And did you know the movie Jaws was based on a fatal Jersey shark attack? Well, then, read the book.
Stick With His Other Books.......2003-03-16
While this book was okay, I was kind of disappointed. It seems to just be rehashed articles from the author's previous two books, Roadside NJ and Jersey Diners, without all of the great pictures that originally accompanied them. I would recommend buying one of those books, which are still published by Rutgers University Press, rather than this one.
