Book Description
The King reader is a collection of articles on international economics by leading economists drawn from various scholarly sources (e.g., Foreign Affairs, The Brookings Institution, Finance & Development, Federal Reserve Publications, the Journal of Economic Perspectives). Written by the top economists in the field, all the articles are written at a level appropriate for undergraduates or masters students. The Reader makes an inexpensive supplement when packaged with any McGraw-Hill/Irwin text, or at a reasonable price when sold by itself.
Book Description
Current debates about the nature of international politics have centered on the clash between supporters and critics of realism. The Perils of Anarchy brings together a number of recent essays written in the realist tradition. It includes realist interpretations of the collapse of the Cold War order and of the emerging order that has replaced it, the sources of alignment and aggression, and the causes of peace. A final section provides a counterpoint by raising criticisms of and alternatives to the realist approach.
Contributors: Charles L. Glaser. Christopher Layne. Peter Liberman. Lisa L. Martin. John J. Mearsheimer. Paul Schroeder. Randall Schweller. Stephen M. Walt. Kenneth N. Waltz. William C. Wohlforth. Fareed Zakaria.
An International Security Reader
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......1999-09-02
This International Security reader is a great collection of the recent work in the realist tradition in International Relations. Here you can read the "classic" authors (like Waltz and Walt) and the "new generation" (Schweller - excellent - and Zakaria). The introduction, written by the editors of the volume, is wonderful: it really "maps" realism and its authors. There is also two essays by John Mearsheimer, the "hardcore" realist and his gloomy "Back to the Future" article. Great book and certainly worth the money. This is the best book in the "International Security" readers series.
Book Description
Globalization effectively captures the growth of linkages across national boundaries, the global expansion of a market economy and the rise of a complex but integrated world society. The Globalization Reader makes sense of a term that has become an all-purpose catchword in contemporary debates. The editors have compiled the most relevant literature into a highly readable and accessible format. With its broad coverage of political, economic, cultural, and individual dimensions, this volume provides readers with a deeper understanding of the globalization process. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and updated, with thirty new essays and a new section on anti-globalization movements. The editors have replaced several abstract articles from the first edition with livelier, more accessible essays that reflect the current scholarship. With new case studies, and a more international focus, this second edition is an even better introduction to globalization studies.
Customer Reviews:
thoughtful views from noted personages.......2005-09-22
The editors put together an impressive pedigree of authors of the book's chapters. Foremost amongst these is Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations. He discusses how modern states still have a place in this era of increasing globalisation. Then Nobelist Amartya Sen asks how to judge its successes and failures. He suggests that it has much to offer. But also cautions that multinationals often prefer working in autocracies than in free wheeling democracies. And globalisation tends to deal in spreading capitalism rather than democracy.
Historian Samuel Huntington, philosopher Hans Kung and many others also give variant takes. More optimistic, though with qualifications.
You can ponder the essays as posing more thoughtful and measured views than many shrill screeds on the subject.

Best Anthology for College Writers.......2000-09-15
This is the kind of reader desparately needed in the undergrad university writing class. It is savvy, hip, and knowledgeable. It is funny, with a few sharp, political cartoons slipped in for inspiration. Any university professor of writing should jump on this one immediately. It will certainly take the place of the fuddy-duddy, over-priced dullsville reader you have been using. The editors have taken special care to make certain each essay carries social awareness and creative energy. These are the topics which will provoke a class into a free-flowing conversational session. Yes, it is a provocative reader by a great little press that will not cost an arm and a leg. Today, the liberal arts classroom gets a bashing from corporate influences which would kind of like to take over the universities and influence the way classes are taught. This is a reader that throws a few punches back, and it hits right on target. So if you are a college student, suggest this reader to your prof. If you are a professor, make sure your next semester students get the opportunity to read and respond to these knock-out pieces of poignant writing. This is a collection that takes a few risks, and any writing professor worth a syllable should be doing that much--and a whole lot more, to promote critical thinking. This is a reader which illustrates that the latest generation is not brain-dead. Amen.

Book Description
Molecular Biology of the Cell is the classic in-depth text reference in cell biology. By extracting the fundamental concepts from this enormous and ever-growing field, the authors tell the story of cell biology, and create a coherent framework through which non-expert readers may approach the subject. Written in clear and concise language, and beautifully illustrated, the book is enjoyable to read, and it provides a clear sense of the excitement of modern biology. Molecular Biology of the Cell sets forth the current understanding of cell biology (completely updated as of Autumn 2001), and it explores the intriguing implications and possibilities of the great deal that remains unknown.
The hallmark features of previous editions continue in the Fourth Edition. The book is designed with a clean and open, single-column layout. The art program maintains a completely consistent format and style, and includes over 1,600 photographs, electron micrographs, and original drawings by the authors. Clear and concise concept headings introduce each section. Every chapter contains extensive references. Most important, every chapter has been subjected to a rigorous, collaborative revision process where, in addition to incorporating comments from expert reviewers, each co-author reads and reviews the other authors' prose. The result is a truly integrated work with a single authorial voice.

bio book.......2007-09-15
the book is amazing. i got it in great shape, and aside from it weighing 7 lbs...it's a great book for a biology class.
Best Science Book I've Ever Read.......2007-07-09
If you are taking a cell biology book, this is the book to read. Even if your instructor assigns a lighter book, you can still read this and benefit. It's one of those rare books that go into the details while still being readible. It's incredibly well organized and well written.
A thousand carats text!.......2007-06-27
The undeniable importance of the molecular biology has achieved in the last two decades such transcendental outburst of energy, advances and extraordinary finfings that hardly we should devote entirely to be informed about the multiple consequences of its profound implications.
This book is a true effort worthy to admire, because it has been written with this kind spirit of sharing the knowledge wothout pretensions or any other considerations.
Once you open it, you will be absoltely engaged due its relevant interest, because of the fact there`s a lot of secondnary readings and discoveries all over the world that it should be be stated of this way. May one not being aware about the structure of the cell and the mesmerizing devices the nature employs to show us its lavish dynamics.
Additionally the support material of this CD ROM simply is priceless. I insist, you don't need to be an expert in this issue to start.
Decide by yourself and please, dont wait so long.
Molecurar biology of the cell.......2007-05-18

Book Description
Courses in molecular and cellular biology are a cornerstone of undergraduate programs in the life sciences. The material is not only fundamental to all of biology, but also represents an exciting and rapidly moving area of science. This makes teaching undergraduates a rewarding experience, but also a challenging task. The Cell: A Molecular Approach meets this challenge by providing students with not only the most current information, but also with a conceptual framework and an introduction to the experimental nature of contemporary research. Designed for use in one-semester introductory cell biology courses, The Cell presents current comprehensive science in a readable and cohesive text that students can master in the course of one semester.
The new Fourth Edition of The Cell has been updated to reflect major advances since publication of the Third Edition in 2003, including:
* The role of microRNAs in regulation of gene expression
* Expanded discussions of genomics, proteomics, and signaling networks
* Translational regulation and the mTOR signaling pathway
* Roles of specialized lipid domains in cell surface processes
* Advances in stem cell biology
* Oncogenes and the rational design of new anticancer drugs
While retaining the overall organization, themes, and special features of earlier editions, including Key Experiment and Molecular Medicine essays, the Fourth Edition of The Cell includes:
* Three additional chapters, including Cell Death and Cell Renewal
* Major new sections, including
o Proteomics: Large-Scale Analysis of Cell Proteins
o Bioinformatics and Systems Biology
o Cell-Matrix Interactions
o Signaling Networks
* New chapter sidebars that highlight areas of interest and clinical applications throughout each chapter

A Very Good Reference for a Host of Areas of Biology.......2007-07-07
This is a textbook for undergraduates, but I'm not a student. I've been studying evolution from a variety of books and I finally decided I needed a systematic look at the biology of the cell. I shopped Amazon and decided on this book and I am well satisfied with it.
There is too much information for me to summarize, but the book's Table of Contents does an excellent job of that. (Click on "Search inside this book".) The book also has an abbreviated Table of Contents, not shown in this product page, which will help the reader locate a particular topic within the longer ToC.
The book starts with "Introduction", which provides background material and gives a glimpse of the book ahead. I think that a student using this as the text for a course for a one-semester course will probably need to know most of this beforehand. A person with more time will still need some background. You should already know what carbohydrates, amino acids, lipids, and nucleic acids are; the basics of the DNA-to-RNA-to-protein pathway; the fact that a membrane consists of a double layer of phospholipids, with other molecules embedded in it; and other basics of the cell. You will need at least a modest familiarity with diagrams of molecules and molecular processes. If the Table of Contents doesn't look like nonsense to you, you're probably prepared.
The exercises are important because they contain material that is not in the main text. For example, there are exercises that ask you to apply what you learned in the text to a problem similar to the ones scientists try to solve. It is doubly important for non-students because they let you verify your learning.
The Book Description says this book has "the most current information". This isn't possible in a book; in a field as active as cellular and molecular biology a lot happens between the time the manuscript is completed and the time the book is released for sale. What this book can do is to give you the background you need to read the science news articles. And that's doing quite a bit.
I mentioned that I had been reading other material wanted to fill in my background. The other material included such topics as molecular biology of the gene, signal transduction, mitochondria, and cancer. Since the cell is the basic unit of biology, The Cell is a gateway to many other topics as well. It would have been easier if I had read The Cell first, but I didn't know that. If you might be interested in some of the earlier books, they are listed in my Listmania "Natural Processes That Promote Evolution". There is a link to it in my Amazon Profile. (Click on my name at the top of this review.) But, of course, I recommend reading The Cell first.
If you're a student wondering what kind of nut reads books like this for fun, the Profile also has a bit about me under the title "In My Own Words".
I finished The Cell a few weeks ago and since then I have referred to it a few times for help in understanding science news. Given that I found it useful, there must be plenty of other people who would, and so I wrote this review.
Very good condition.......2007-03-09
The book was in very good condition and was received in a timely fashion.

Book Description
The chapters in CYTOMETRY MCB volumes, including this 4th Edition, provide comprehensive description of particular cytometric methods and review their applications. Some chapters also describe new instrumentation and provide fundamental information on use of new fluorescent probes and on data analysis. Although the term "edition" suggests the update of earlier volumes, in fact, nearly all chapters of the 4th Edition are devoted to new topics. The authors were invited to present not only technical protocols, such as available in other methodology books that specialize in the protocol format, but also to discuss the aspects of the methodology that generally are not included in the protocols. Many chapters, thus, present the theoretical foundations of the described methods, their applicability in experimental laboratory and clinical setting, common traps and pitfalls, problems with data interpretation, comparison with alternative assays, choice of the optimal assay, etc. Some chapters review applications of cytometry and complementary methodologies to particular biological problems or clinical tasks.
The 34 chapters presented in CYTOMETRY 4th Edition cover a wide range of diverse topics. Several chapters describe progress in technology of fluorescence measurement. The novel phenomenon of the surface-plasmon coupled emission (SPCE) presented in one of these chapters, in combination with nanophotonic technology, is expected to open entirely new possibilities for ultra-sensitive detection of fluorescence, likely from single fluorochrome molecules. The chapter on cytometry of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) describes the theoretical foundations- and uncovers further analytical possibilities- of this methodology. The chapter on fluorescent proteins is an exhaustive review of accomplishments and possibilities offered in this rapidly expanding field. The critical assessment of quantitative analytical capabilities of confocal microscopy, optimization of emission optics and further progress in development of laser scanning cytometry instrumentation are the topics of other chapters focused on methodology of fluorescence measurement.
Another group of chapters describe variety of cytometric methods and their applications in studies of cell death, particularly by mode of apoptosis, mechanism of antitumor drug action, and DNA damage. The rapidly growing application of cytometry in phytoplankton is also assessed in great detail. The chapters on biohazard sorting and data analysis guidelines will be of interest to a variety of researchers in different fields.
Cell immunophenotyping represents the most common application of cytometry, particularly in clinical setting. It is not surprising, therefore, that over a third of all chapters of this volume are devoted to methods and applications of multi-color immunophenotyping and probing immune functions of lymphocytes and phagocytes.
The field of cytogenetics and molecular genetics is represented by several chapters. Presented are the methods for telomere length measurement and genomic array technology as well as multiplex amplifiable probe hybridization (MAPH) and multiplex ligation dependent probe amplification (MLPA), the latter to probe the copy number changes (deletions, multiplications) in genomic DNA. A very exhaustive is the chapter describing the use of subtelometric probes in studies of mental retardation.
In tradition with the earlier CYTOMETRY editions, the chapters were prepared by the researchers who either developed the described methods, contributed to their modification, or found new applications and have extensive experience in their use. The list of authors, thus, is a continuation of "Who's Who" directory in the field of cytometry.
* Comprehensive presentation of cytometric methods covering theoretical applications, applicability, potential pitfalls, and comparisions to alternative assays
* Discusses many new assays developed since the previous edition
* Presents recent developments in cytometric intrumentation/technology
