The newest X-men alternative history.......2007-10-02
In the beggining I bought this book for curiosity because I read de review and I didn't like the story, but when I read this book I changed my mind totally because it was written with a dramatic point of view, I mean, the history is about what happen when the skarlet wich loose her mind and Pietro (quicksilver) manipulate her and she changed the world, now the mutantkind command the entire world, and she gives to all her friends the ability to have the life they always wanted, for example Spiderman is married to Gwen Stacy his uncle ben is alive, Cyclops and the White Queen are married and live together, Magneto is the ruler of the world is his catle in genosha (House Of M) but the only problerm is that Wolverine always wanted to remember everything, and of course he remembers what happened eith the Skarlet Wich, and he recruit all the avengers and the x-men (with the help of a mutant child) and the fight begins, and the final is amazing. This book is relly good, and I now want to read DECIMATION X-MEN: THE DAY AFTER, because I want to know much more. And I almost forget the drawing of Oliver Coipel is excellent.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Coming out of the events of Avengers Disassembled, the Scarlet Witch has clearly gone completely round the bend. Her bend is a bit of a Mobius strip type doozy, as she recreates the whole world in a manner that her warped mind sees fit.
Everything is now different, and only a few realise it, or begin to realise. Those that do have to work out what to do about it. Save her, or annihilate her.
Generally pretty average.
"Marvel Event of the Decade?".......2007-07-11
This book was hyped as the "Marvel event of the decade" in 2005. Since then, we've been hit with the Civil War, World War Hulk, X-Men: Endangered Species, and (soon) the Skrull War. That's some stiff competition for the best Marvel book of the decade, but "House of M" still stacks up pretty well.
The infamous "no more mutants" decree by Wanda Maximoff led to plenty of great spin-offs after the event, such as "198" and "Son of M". (The cross-overs that occurred during the "House of M" event, however, aren't necessary to the main storyline here and are mostly just of the "What If...?" variety.)
If you haven't read Marvel comics for a while, this is the book to start with.
A great story that justifies all the hype.......2007-05-28
HOUSE OF M is easily one of the most hyped and talked about comic series in recent years. This is the series that took the Marvel universe and turned it upside down and inside out. Following this almost everything you thought you knew about the world of Marvel had to be reevaluated and the fallout still affects a whole range of comic heroes. Even for comics relatively outside all these events, like my favs The Runaways, they take place with the events in this story as background (for instance, Molly Hayes, the group's lone mutant, is one of the world's few remaining mutants).
I won't rehearse the events in the story because so many have already done so. I'll merely state that the story is better than a mere recap can do justice to. I find sometimes in the Marvel world that many stories are conceived better than they are executed. But this is one time when the story exceeds any expectations. One of the things that constantly recurred in BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER was the idea that breaking the rules of magic had consequences. That principle is definitely present here. The Scarlet Witch twice reimagines all reality, each time with massive consequences for everyone, hero and nonhero alike. One is impressed by the pathos that drives her two fantasies: first, a mutant utopia in which mutants and heroes reign as lords of the world, second, a world in which she has managed to eliminated all but a couple of hundred mutants. Marvel has sometimes been a somewhat conservative organization, creating a host of characters, but nearly all a variation on a theme. Characters have died and there have been some shocks and surprises, but rarely have they truly shaken things up. But here they did something truly gutsy: the changed all the rules. HOUSE OF M fed directly into the CIVIL WAR stories, which I find pretty exhilarating. Not all agree. Many comics fans are conservative creatures, who would not agree that change is good. Personally, I love for creative artists to take risks.
The hero of the story, to the degree that there is one, is Wolverine, the one Marvel hero you figured would be impervious to manipulation. He says in the story that he had been memory wiped so many times that he had grown immune to it, but you figure that such a prickly soul would have gotten past it anyway. If the Marvel universe has an ultimate survivor, Wolverine would be that.
The cover, interestingly, does not really feature the central characters in the story. A number of characters who play little or no role are featured, like McCoy, Colossus, and Captain America, while some who play major roles, like Cloak, Dr. Strange, and Xavier are not depicted at all. Not really complaint; more of an observation.
If you like comics or graphic novels at all, this is one you should own. It's as good as its reputation would suggest.
I Dug It!.......2007-04-29
Brian Michael Bendis is hands down the best and most prolific writers in comics today. I'll read anything he does (although I may not be able to buy all of them). Another great Marvel Universe bending story from Bendis. I follow the writer in comics more than the title. With following a writer like Bendis you'll enjoy more comics more often. This is a great book and it's got great art.

best academy x title so far.......2006-06-24
collects issue #16-19. i've been fairly disappointed with defillips/weir's run on new mutants v.3/new x-men academy x, but this is the best arc so far. as you prob. know, this title is part of the house of m series which, b/c of the scarlet witch's powers running amok, is basically a chance for marvel to write some "what if?" stories into their main books. in this instance magneto has overcome all of the homo sapiens (who now exist as second-class citizens). noriko, who gets a lot of attention here, is trying to find her father (a homo sapien) who is head of a resistance group. unfortunately the junior SHIELD corps (mostly hellions members) is trying to track him down as well.
the setup is much more interesting than usual and it has a lot of action, and some nice guest appearances for fans of the orig. series (cypher!! yeah! and magik!). disappointed that dani didn't kick as much @$$ as usual though, and that rahne and northstar weren't in it, but those aren't major complaints. lopresti's art is fantastic, better than his work on excalibur imo.
overall this is prob. one of the better books in the house of m series and def. one of the better academy x books, although not for newcomers to the series.

Successor to the best-selling News from Lake Wobegon, this collection of Garrison Keillor monologues inlcudes 16 stories, grouped by theme: Love, Faith, Hope, and Humor. All are from original live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion.
Customer Reviews:
Great for a long drive.......2007-09-17
This CD is great for a long drive, or long flight, it is entertaining and better than a book on tape. It can be a little boring at times.
Funny and then soothing.......2007-08-16
I love to give these collections of monologues to folks who are experiencing a long recovery from surgery or undergoing medical treatment. The monologues are funny to listen to, and after they have listened to them a time or two, just hearing Garrison Keillor's soothing voice has a calming effect. The stories from Lake Wobegon are the best sleeping potions available--and there are no side effects other than falling asleep with a smile on your face.
Disappointing news.......2007-05-23
Garrison Keillor has a wonderful way with words, but this CD was disappointing. The stories dragged on too long and sometimes with no purpose in the end or sentiment to remember. Keillor can do much better. He is usually a great story teller. He seemed to run out of steam on this 4hour tape. This will still not deter me from buying and listening to other news from Lake Wobegon.
More News from Lake Wobegon.......2007-03-08
My purchases were made for Garrison Keillor fans. I'm sure They Loved Them All.

Customer Reviews:
CD sent - I wanted a book.......2007-09-20
After seeking out a book by Garrison Keillor a CD was sent out. All of this comes down to confusion on your Keillor page - is it a book or a CD?
Wide Appeal.......2004-07-25
Garrison Keillor writes poignant and often funny stories about small-town, Midwestern life. His works have often been compared to those of Mark Twain, and I can give no greater praise than that, except to say that you need not be a Christian to enjoy his stories about Christmas (I'm not), you need not be a Minnesotan to enjoy his revelations about life in Minnesota (I've never even been there), and you need not be from a small town to relate to the eccentric characters of Lake Wobegone (I'm as urban as they come). So come and visit Lake Wobegon, it's an enchanting, old-fashioned, liberal-making, and distinctly American faeryland where the women are strong, the men are good looking, and the children are always above average.
Classic Keillor.......2002-04-27
I have the cassette collection of all four seasons of News from Lake Wobegon, and have worn them out. Time to buy the CDs! Winter is my favorite. It warms your heart and makes you laugh.
Keillor captures winter as no one else can.......2001-01-27
The five stories in this CD set are all majestic, and they include every aspect of winter one can think of. "Guys on ice" is a rather self-explanatory title, chronicling the thoughts of guys on ice; always interesting. "James Lundeen's Christmas" is the story of a boy who finds Christmas as it is truly meant to be. "Christmas story re-told isn't as magical as it is in the Bible, but Keillor comes as close as one can in his re-telling. "New Year's from New York" details Keillor's appreciation for the event from a child's perspective. "Storm Home" brings to life the things that can make school and home life tolerable. This is a terrific compilation of Keillor's winter work.

No clue.......2007-01-10
I did not understand it. Will pas it to someone who has more knoweldge in the matter. Sorry it is very local, no apt for foreigners.
Hooray for Garrison Keillor.......2005-08-26
Such a joy to listen to this man tell his stories. No matter who you are or where you grew up and now live, his tales are sure to remind you of someone whom youknow.
The Best of the Best of Garrison Keillor.......1999-05-25
"Fall" contains the single funniest Lake Wobegon monolgue yet written: "Bruno the Fishing Dog." It also contains a typically Minnesotan Thanksgiving recap ("Hors duerves at the Tollefson's, can you believe it?"), and a devastating 24-minute epic, "The Royal Family," that has nothing to do with the Windsors.
Owning this collection (and "Gospel Birds") is a must for fans, and a great starting place for newbies.

Summer classics from Lake Wobegon.......1998-10-19
Amongst the wonderful "News from Lake Wobegon" collections, this stands high as a personal favourite. Apart from the classic "Lving Flag" and "Tomato Butt", "The Tollefson Boy goes to College" and "Mrs Berge and the Schubert Carillon Piano" [with brilliant impersonations of the carillon piano] are strong, mixing acute observation of the humour, tedium and sadness of everyday life with just enough exaggeration to provide comic relief.
Book Description
One of the best-selling spoken audio of all time, this is the original collection of Garrison Keillor monologues. Funny and touching, these 20 stories from original live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion follow the seasons in Lake Wobegon.
Customer Reviews:
Some of the Best Lake Wobegon monologues - all right here!.......2001-03-29
The 4 cassettes are titled "Summer", "Fall", "Winter" and "Spring". All have very funny stories on them and are worth the listen many times over. But the absolute best of the 4 tapes, and the biggest reason anyone should buy this collection, is the "Fall" stories. "Fall" (which I also found listed separately, and have left a review there as well) contains the single funniest Lake Wobegon monologue, "Bruno the Fishing Dog." It also contains a funny take on Minnesota Thanksigivings, and a devastating 24-minute epic called The Royal Family, which I found to be well worth the trip.
To me, Keillor-on-paper vs. Keillor-live is apples and oranges - they should be judged separately. If you do want to hear him, buy this collection--and the collection called "Gospel Birds", also a classic--and you'll be set for some time.
Stories generally good, but rarely funny.......2001-01-25
I love Keillor's "Lake Wobegon Days" book, but found listening to these original NPR monologues strangely unappetizing. His book treatments of many of these stories succeed better as humor because on paper he strives more for gentle laughs than to force something "tender" into the mix. This may also reflect the problems of writing and delivering a monologue on live radio every week. Consider the hilarious "Giant Decoys" story. On paper, and for most of the audio monologue, it's about the Sons of Knute lodge and their love of duck hunting, which includes the creation of enormous decoys big enough for ducks to clearly spot them from cruising altitude. In the original monologue, however, Keillor exits with a pointless talk about how writers and hunters both do crazy things and how the hunters need to keep their guns on safety when they're out in the woods whooping it up. It's telling that Keillor omitted this from the book version, and could probably have been safely edited out of the CD. Ditto to his "Christmas Story Re-Told," which seems unfocused, especially for a man whose books usually brilliantly send-up the Catholic and Lutheran faiths; his "Royal Family" bit is clever but overly long and too sentimental. That said, several of Keillor's more "serious" stories are remarkable; he seems at his most effective when he doesn't consciously pull at too many heart strings. His "Hog Slaughter" evokes a lot of ghosts from my summers spent on my relatives' rural farm, where an inner-barn room still bore red-painted walls from that (thankfully long-since-gone) ritual. The same track includes his haunting tale of the unfortunate Elizabeth June, a disabled woman so lonely she invented friends. Keillor uses a light touch with these, and it's hard not to laugh at the moment in church when poor Elizabeth loudly announces to her invisible friend that, yes, she will buy that car. Of his "straight" humor, Keillor seems at his best in shorter bursts like his "brought to you by the Lake Wobegon Chamber of Commerce" bit, in which he introduces us to Fr. Emil's summer replacement at Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility -- a priest whose rambling sermons feature lessons learned while playing golf, and which include experiences gleaned during parish work in the Las Vegas diocese. His "Living Flag" monologue here is cute, but was better handled in book form. That tells me that while Keillor is America's sole live-radio entertainment stalwart, his humor is most focused and polished on paper.

Customer Reviews:
I heart Garrison Keillor.......2007-06-12
The product was amazing, as always, with anything by Mr. Keillor. The stories brought me back to family vacations to the Northeast; sleepy-time ventures in the car while my parents drove... Garrison's voice is my favorite part about his stories. I also love that these are ONLY Lake Wobegone stories and have nothing to do with his whole radio show. (Lake Wobegone was always my favorite part anyway) :) Also, on a side not, the CD arrived on time and just as the seller said it would be. Two thumbs up. :)
Lake Wobegon springs wonderfully.......1998-10-19
Clarence Bunsen has bad (i.e. extremely funny) day, involving static, cramped hand and fear of death, ending with his leaping from a tree to frighten some children and restoring his equilibrium. Only GK could combine all those elements in one of the seasonal CDs from LW. "Me and Choir" is also excellent.
Book Description
Includes: "Truckstop," "Uncle Al's Gift," "Rotten Apples," and "The Wise Men."
Customer Reviews:
Ranking as high as any of Keillor's stories.......2001-01-27
The four stories of "Love", are quite simply genius, capturing the perfect balance between humor and poignancy. "Truckstop" is as good a story as Keillor has ever come up with, profiling the events both before and after Florian Krebsbach leaves his wife Myrtle at a truckstop. "Uncle Al's gift" provide side splitting humor as well as an excellent moral. "Rotten Apples" gives us another insight from Keillor into a child's weord, wonderful mind. And "The Wise Men" provides a glimpse into the difficulties of being a minister, especially at Christmastime. Personally, I would recommend that those considering buying this tape buy the whole "More News From Lake Wobegone" series, but if you're going to buy just one cassette, this is the one!

Customer Reviews:
Four more Keillor classics.......2001-01-27
"More News From Lake Wobegon's" "Hope", contains four more stories that further cement Keillor's place as the greatest storyteller in modern American History. The first story is "Alaska", an absurdly brilliant account of an independent Minnesotan who goes to Alaska to get away from her mother. Second is "The perils of Spring", where Keillor honors the constantly struggling farmer with humor, as always. "A trip to Grand Rapids" is the story of a couple who tries to get away for the weekend, with little initial success, and "Author" is a look into the pre-adolescent mind of the future author, Garrison Keillor himself. Altogether, these stories are magnificent and would be enjoyed certainly by anyone who reads this review.

four more great stories by the best storyteller alive.......2001-01-22
On this cassette, Garrison Keillor writes four stories that range from the absurd "Pontoon Boat", to the poignant "O death", to the delightfully real "Smokes" to the irreverent "Let Us Pray". They are definitely all keepers, and if you have the appreciation for Keillor's unquestioned genius, then you will enjoy these stories as much as I do.
