Good Math Book.......2004-08-08
I got this book because my daughter was in a private Montessori school, and just was not getting the Math. I found it great for teaching what she needed to know in third grade for math. The book starts with a plain basic explaination, and builds on that knowlege in a logical sequence. My daughter ended up understanding what the teachers could not teach. I ended up having my daughter bring it to school to learn math. We are not returning to the Montessori school. However,I am ordering the fourth grade math book in this series.
A decent math book, not micky mouse math.......2001-01-18
I found out about this book spotting a woman dragging around a bunch of kids with textbooks to the dentist, sure enough she was homeschooling, and she told me to get this book from Christian Supply. It's easier to get my 2nd copy (to replace the one I gave to my teacher) on Amazon.
It covers all the basics, plus some of the goofy games they play on those new fangled state tests like WASL.
The homework I get from my public school is pretty awful, it's either way too easy, or way too hard, or it's really hard but doesn't teach any math. Any one of the worksheets in these books is easy to do in 10 minutes and teaches just what you need to know. None of this cut out 56 cards and spend 2 hours playing how to add 10 or subtract 10 with your entire family nonsense.
The grade 3 covers multiplication with decimal points, square root on calculators, how to add X of item A, Y of item B, etc. by mixing multiply and add, and how to create a table for guess and check, plus measurement.
This book is a half-inch thick and tells you everything you need to know in 3rd grade. Dale Seymour's "Investigations" is 2 feet worth of books that you can't write on that doesn't teach you how to carry or do long division, but you do get to sing "Happy Birthday" in two languages.
Chances are, your school district has adopted one of the half dozen National Science Foundation "fuzzy" or "standards based" math texts that deliberately won't even show you how to add, multiply or divide without the use of a calculator or a number chart. The worksheets my teacher was handing out from who knows where were even worse.
If you supplement you kids with these, you'll have a good idea of what's normal for 3rd grade, and what good homework should look like. If everybody got worked up and bought this and showed this to their teachers and principal, we wouldn't have to deal with terrible math books.

Use it all the time........2007-01-06
I am a special education teacher who has used this series when I taught in a high school English class as well as currently in an elementary classroom. My students like the stories. They especially like the fact that each section is small enough that it is not overwhelming to them. I find that it works great in not only improving their vocabulary skills but also their reading and writing skills. I recommend this series to anyone looking for an good simple vocabulary program.

A classic yaoi PWP series........2006-04-11
If you like fluffy romance and lots of hot sex scenes without a heavy plotline, then the Level C series won't disappoint you. Yes the plot is minimal, but the steamy sex makes up for it. The artwork isn't top-notch, but neither is it the bottom of the barrel. I actually thought it was rather nicely drawn. There actually is more of a story than much of the yaoi that we americans are able to get and the soft romance is a great counter-point to the more weighty, angst-ridden stories that we're used to reading.
Hmm not bad at all.......2005-12-06
I really enjoyed this story so far! I mean I didn't expect alot to come out from it but it was sweet. I must admit that the books are a bit off on somethings but it's Yaoi and it's more settle then the prevoius yaoi books I have. But if you are really in the mood for some causal all-guy, lot of sex, sexual contact then I suggest this story.
No Plot and Iffy Art.......2005-09-29
This title has little or no plotline, whatsoever. It's extremely hard to follow and it seems that the author decided, 'when in doubt, add sex.' The characters' incorrect anatomy kept me from enjoying any part of this book. I was constantly bothered by the fact that their bodies just didn't look right. This is not a flame of any sort, because I love yaoi, but I need at least some kind of relevant plot... If you feel the same, this book is not for you. If you just want random sex that has no apparent reason, you might enjoy this...
Pleasant Porn without Plot.......2005-07-21
I really liked this book. Sure, there's no 'there' there. It's really just about two guys who meet, have sex a lot, and are in love. But geez, the sex is hot and the love is warm and snuggly.
I do have to address the 'wimpy uke' thing. I'm also one of those die-hard yaoi fans that finds it highly disturbing that so many yaoi manga seem to extol the virtues of rape. Like the ony way the uke can still be respected is if they're screaming 'no' the entire time they're having sex.
One of the things I liked most about Level C was that it felt like the uke was genuinely confused by his body's reactions to things that (obviously) he's been socialized to view as gross and wrong, but was also (obviously) enjoying himself greatly. And the seme, while pushing the uke's boundaries, never seemed (to me, anyway) to violate them. In fact, he's downright gentlemanly, by far the most considerate and non-jugemental seme I think I've ever seen in hardcore yaoi (except, of course, the brilliant Skyscrapers of OZ.)
All in all - I think this is sweet, sexy porn. I'd probably rate it a four-and-a-half stars if I could, just because there's absolutely no plot, but I feel it's one of the sweetest PWP mangas I've read in ages.
Story, anyone?.......2005-07-10
No one that knows me will ever accuse me of turning down yaoi/shonen-ai in any form, and Level-C is no different. However, I often enjoy some good story with my gay sex, and Level-C's version of a story is more of an after-thought than the manga's main concern.
I had first heard of and seen Level-C in it's anime form, and I appreciate the manga for expanding upon it; but in either DVD or manga form the story is STILL too brief, and the romance too rushed, compared to other titles available. Still, the characters are cute and the story is light-hearted and funny. I don't feel cheated when watching/reading Level-C, I just wish there was more! Recommended to all yaoi fans, however.
Only big complaint: It has a wimpy uke (bottom). Why oh why must 95% of ukes be made into rape victims during sex scenes?
Book Description
Bill Alexander had no idea that his simple dream of having a vegetable garden and small orchard in his backyard would lead him into life-and-death battles with groundhogs, webworms, weeds, and weather; midnight expeditions in the dead of winter to dig up fresh thyme; and skirmishes with neighbors who feed the vermin (i.e., deer). Not to mention the vacations that had to be planned around the harvest, the near electrocution of the tree man, the limitations of his own middle-aged body, and the pity of his wife and kids. When Alexander runs (just for fun!) a costbenefit analysis, adding up everything from the live animal trap to the Velcro tomato wraps and then amortizing it over the life of his garden, it comes as quite a shock to learn that it cost him a staggering $64 to grow each one of his beloved Brandywine tomatoes. But as any gardener will tell you, you can't put a price on the unparalleled pleasures of providing fresh food for your family.
Customer Reviews:
Great book gift for green thumbs (and brown thumbs).......2007-08-09
I HATE gardening, but thoroughly enjoyed reading Alexander's odyssey of his quest to build his dream garden. Very funny account of epic battles with weeds, rodents, and bugs as he tries to prevent his little "hobby" from ruining his life. Your gardening friends will love this book (and non-gardeners will too!)
A tasty little story.......2007-08-02
His wife's insistence on an old fixer-upper of a house means the author can have the garden, orchard, and even meadow he's always dreamed. Once the house is livable--and everyone in town knows it has to be repaired to be livable--the owners start on the grounds. Landscape contractors, who are always late and leave their backhoe to winter in the author's yard, promise a garden to be proud of--and then bring plans for some very ordinary rectangles.
Not to be daunted, Alexander picks heirloom plants to grow his produce. He is determined to have the same fruit and experiences he remembers from his father's gardening. Organic gardening should be easy when he has only four trees and a small garden. He can pluck off the hungry worms and organically protect his crops from predators of all types.
After learning how much time is involved in using the organic bug sprays--first you find the caterpillar, then you spray him--how much it costs to put in something other than grass walkways, and that some animals are not deterred by six thousand volts, he gets down to serious gardening.
His wife and children begin to question his sanity. His plants don't always grow the way he expected. Who knew growing roses would kill the corn? Sitting down to calculate the cost of his succulent heirloom tomatoes gives him a jolt he thought he'd only get from his electric fence. Did his dad really do it this way? Had he been hoodwinked about how much fun this all was? When did the hobby become a second job?
You needn't be a gardener to enjoy the humor in this book. The history of tomatoes and potatoes, and insights on the Anasazi Indians thrown in with ridding the garden of Superchuck, the groundhog, is true fun for the reading. Cultivated entertainment.
Armchair Interview says: Humor and hoeing, planting and waiting, bugs and bug sprays flow together to give you an enjoyable read.
Enjoyable memoir of a man and his garden.......2007-07-26
I am by no means a gardening expert, more of a beginner, but I enjoyed this memoir of one man's obsession with and relationship with his garden. I found it informative and funny. I took as much what not to do, as what to do, from the book. I mean, you can see the excessiveness of his spending and learn from it as much as you can learn from the ways he fights pests on his fruit trees. I read books like this for inspiration and I was inspired by his mistakes and successes. All in all it was an enjoyable light read.
For the Gardening Obsessed.......2007-07-26
This book speaks to every obsessed gardener in America. The majority of the public, however, won't get it. They put in a few pansies, water them when they think of it and go on with their lives. But a few of us have an insatiable drive to work the soil, wage a constant war with the elements and beat off ravaging beasts just so we can be overwhelmed with too much produce.
Our neighbors think we're nuts--why would someone put themselves through all that labor and expense to get something they could buy at the corner market for $0.85 a pound? (Yeah, well I don't get the mountain climbing thing either.)
I like Alexander's writing--it was cute and witty and perfectly illustrated a man trying to work in his career, family and home improvement projects around his gardening obsession. All 2,000 square feet of it.
Although organic gardeners will be disgusted with how often Alexander reaches for the spray can, most will be able to relate to his journey.
A really cute read but I can't review the recipes as I didn't try them out yet.
As an animal lover..........2007-06-28
... I too was distressed by the chapters where the authors obsession defies his place at the top of the food chain and his "logical" abilities. When the local fauna decide that his exorbitantly expensive garden is the local salad bar, he goes on the war path and attempts to destroy everything alive that is not a plant.
While this is somewhat disheartening, it is also illuminating. I place this book alongside ElectroBoy on my bookshelf, and alongside The Omnivore's Dilemma, because it makes such a natural segue between the two.
William Alexander is truly obsessed with his garden. What ought to be a nice, pleasant way to pass time and to get some exercise and food turns into a dangerous obsession, resulting in damage to his finances, his health, his psyche, and his marriage.
It is amusing, in parts, however.
Read it, if only to see what lengths people will go to in order to save their hobby. It is an interesting study, really. Probably not a book I will read again, but it is one that I will think of from time to time.
