Book Description
In this modern retelling of a classic commedia dell' arte legend of tomfoolery and hopeless, fawning love, creators Neil Gaiman (Sandman) and John Bolton (Manbat: Batman) update the relation of Harlequin and Columbine. A buffoon burdened with a brimming heart, Harlequin chases his sensible, oblivious Columbine around the streets of a city, having given his heart freely. Consumed with love, the impulsive clown sees his heart dragged about town, with a charming surprise to bend the tale in a modern direction. Gaiman's writing is poetic and as loopy as the subject matter. Bolton's art, a combination of digitally enhanced photo-realism and dynamic painting provides sensational depth with bright characters over fittingly muted backgrounds. Those who have spent Valentine's Day alone know that the cold February holiday can be hard to swallow. Gaiman and Bolton want you to know that all it takes is a steak knife, a fork, and a bottle of quality ketchup.Contains an additional 8-page backup feature written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by John Bolton on the history of commedia dell' arte!

A flighty story of love and longing, mime and mystery style.......2004-04-19
Based on the old mime shows, Gaimen has written a fickle and fun tale of love and hearts given freely; of yearning for the affection we all crave, and how we are sometimes oblivious to those who love us the most.
Told in the first person by Harlequin himself, he leads us through the giving of his heart, literally, to his beloved Columbine. Dancing across the pages, flitting through the city as he follows Missy, meeting up with his modern day cast of characters: Columbine, Peirrot, the Doctor, Pulcinella, Pantaloon, and others.
Gaimen has a particular talent with Graphic Novellas in that he manages to tell a rich, lush tale with only a few words. Harlequin Valentine is one of his better works, with artist John Bolton bringing Gaimen's story to life, animating it with sharp photographic quality characters cavorting in stark relief against fuzzy and uncertain backgrounds. This style of art work really brought Harlequin and Missy and the others directly to the center of our attention, keeping the focus on the characters despite the few words, and smoothing the flow of the tale to read like silken thoughts of love.
At the end of the story, Gaimen adds a short piece with a terrific explanation and glossary of the Harlequinade and its characters; which for those like me who are uneducated in older forms of theatrical art is a real bonus to the book. Also added as a tasty treat is a little tale called "Drawn in Darkness" that Gaimen added about artist John Bolton.
If you like Graphic Novels that have a softer, more playful side, you will love this particular Gaimen. Enjoy!
A good beginning..........2004-01-04
... but it kinda peters out towards the end.
A lot of the other reviewers have covered the basic premise of the plot already so I won't repeat what's been said.
The artwork itself is beautiful, detailed painterly quality pictures by John Bolton. You won't be disappointed in that aspect. The color palete is cold (his Valentine is painted as a pale, waifish figure) but warm at the same time due to the splashes of red from the Harlequin's outfit and yes, his heart...
Personally, I found the story to be a little short, thus making it a bit unsatisfying for me. The beginning is promising with Harlequin pinning his heart to her door and Valentine's indifference as she removes the pin to take it down. She travels around town trying to find the owner of the heart but without explanation, knows who it is at the end by devouring it. Why would she devour it, this woman who had been clueless before?
All in all, this would have been better if Neil had fleshed the story out more. The characters seem to be 2-dimentional, at the precipice of being 3-dimentional had a bit more effort been made to do so. Great for diehard to midhard Gaiman fans, but not particularly impressive if it's your first Gaiman read.
Sweet, strange and a tiny bit gruesome........2003-01-20
What a strange story! Neil Gaiman is my favorite author, and as much as I love his longer novels (Coraline, American Gods, Neverwhere), he always proves himself best in short tales. And there is no greater treat than a lovingly illustrated, fantastically told graphic novel (adultspeak for: comic book). Harlequin Valentine is the perfect valentine's gift for that friend who prefers Morrisey to Celine Dion. It's a dark, bizarre twist on the commedia dell'Arte character Harlequin, as he follows his modern-day Columbine.
In short, the art is lovely, the story entertainingly bizarre, and Gaiman has once again created a beautiful story with one foot planted firmly in the annals of cultural history and the other in the wry, tongue-in-cheek modern world.
attractive addition to the Gaiman fan's collection.......2002-12-27
In this comic, Neil Gaiman, the auteur writer behind the wonderful, epic Sandman comics teams up with painterly artist John Bolton (who worked on Gaiman's fine original Books of Magic miniseries) in a one-shot comic based on the English variatons of the Italian commedia dell'arte characters of Harlequin, Columbine, Pantaloon, and the Doctor. Mr. Gaiman quite graciously and somewhat unusually offers background information on his source characters in an appendix following the main story. I would suggest you read the story, then the appendix, then re-read the story. This work could easily be seen as a companion piece to Gaiman and McKean's Mr. Punch. Familiar Gaiman themes are present here, delivered with the usual confidence, with no particular connection to the Sandman oeuvre other than a possible clue into the background of the Mad Hettie character. Bolton's work is clearly derived from photographs, too much so for my taste, but still attractive and effective. The lettering is fetching but very small. None of Gaiman's non-Sandman works are as continually rich and fascinating his Sandman masterwork, but this will make a fine addition to the Gaiman fan's library.
Poetic and absolutely loverly.......2002-07-10
I'm not one to write lengthy reviews. So here's mine. Buy it. It's worth it.
Once I finished the book and put it back on the table.. my heart skipped a beat.

It's okay..........2007-04-03
From the back cover:
GODDESS IN WAITING by Anne Stuart
Marika, the astonishingly tall, vibrant, bigger-than-life personality that Edward-of-the-designer-suits has spent his life avoiding, is the proprietor of a funky maternity shop. Edward's expectant sister needs a few things, but his order for her has gone missing. And so, apparently, have his senses, since he finds himself assiting in the delivery of a baby and falling for the outrageous Markia...
GABE'S SPECIAL DELIVERY by Tara Taylor Quinn
On February 14th, Gabe Stone finds a living, breathing valentine on his doorstep. The tiny pink bundle of fleece appears to be his daughter, and her mother has given Gabe four hours to get to know his new baby. Four hours to adjust to fatherhood, resolve custody, and win back his ex-wife?
MY MAN VALENTINE by Jule McBride
Everyone knows Eloise Hunter and C.D. Valentine are in love. Except Eloise and C.D. They think they're just neighbours. Until some good-looking hunk redeems one of Eloise's babysitting coupons by delivering an infant for her to mind. When the hunk takes off, C.D. is outraged and swings into protector mode. But protection is not at all what Eloise wants from Mr. C.D. Valentine...
And my review:
Well, first off, I have to say that this book needed better editing. I'm not going to blame the authors for that--that's the publisher's responsibility. For instance, Anne Stuart's stories lists the heroine's name as Marika on the back cover when it's really Marike, and names the hero Edward when his name is William! How they could be that far off on the hero's name is beyond me!
All of these novellas suffered from the normal problems a "crank-it-out-now" book suffers. The stories are all rushed, the character development is extremely limited, and the plots are often contrived. Instead of finding Anne Stuart's heroine refreshingly off-beat, she came across as weird. Tara Taylor Quinn's characters suffered through one stupid BIG MISUNDERSTANDING after another, a theme I loathe. The Jule McBride's story never really seems to pick up or go anywhere. It just sort of meanders around in circles.
Not recommended by this reader. Try Valentine Delights (Harlequin) collection for some Valentine's Day stories that are truly worth a read, but give VALENTINE BABIES a miss.
A Nice, Light Read........2002-01-26
"Valentine Babies" is an entertaining anthology containing 3 stories centred on Valentine's Day and babies. All 3 stories were fun and original. I wasn't really expecting to like this book, so it was a pleasant surprise to have really enjoyed it!
The first story, "Goddess in Waiting" by Anne Stuart is the best. Marike is a larger than life woman who runs a maternity shop/shelter for pregnant teenagers. When William arrives one day in his Gucci suit looking to have a maternity wardrobe made for his sister, it's clear that these two couldn't be more complete opposites. But William finds the funky and compassionate Marike irresistible, though she's far from his usual type. Now he just has to convince Marike that they're right for each other! This story was fresh and original, and I thought it was great!
Next is Tara Taylor Quinn's "Gabe's Special Delivery". This is the story of two very different people who fall in love and rush into marriage, only to have it fall apart because of a misunderstanding. However, a beautiful baby girl helps them find their way back to each other. Bailey and Gabe are both very likeable characters. This was an enjoyable read.
Finally, Julie McBride's "My Man Valentine" is a sweet story about friends becoming lovers. Eloise has lived next door to C.D. Valentine for two years, and has been fantasizing about him since the day they met. Her plans to profess her feelings for him on Valentine's Day are interrupted when she suddenly finds herself babysitting for a very unhappy little girl. C.D., however, comes to help out, and he and Eloise finally admit that their feelings run deeper than friendship. This is a lovely romance and is sure to please readers.
Overall, this anthology is great for light reading and a few hours of relaxation. Each story is fun and romantic, so pick this book up and enjoy!
This Valentine delivers........2000-03-09
GODDESS IN WAITING, written by Anne Stuart and the first of this collection, gives us Marike, a long-legged completely exasperating female whom William Lambert wants the minute he sees, despite the fact that she's not his type. His type is geared to match his life: sophisticated, elegant, and worldly, everything that the smart-mouthed, quirky Marike is not. And while he annoys her completely upon their first meeting, she is immediately drawn to this tall, sexy man. You'll race through this romance, enjoying the dialogue, the characters, and the wacky world that Marike inhabits. The duct-tape dummy scene is hilarious and easy to envision thanks to one of the best wordsmiths this genre has to offer.
There are few writers who can construct this short form so very well, so make this your introduction to Anne Stuart if you've never read her before. A collection like this is a perfect sampler. I confess that I got this book for her story alone, and I haven't even bothered to read the other two yet. But one Anne Stuart gives you more than your money's worth.
A Good Anthology.......2000-02-16
A read that is centered around Valentine's Day and babies, this was a mostly pleasing anthology for me. I'm not a fan of anthologies--stories too incomplete, rushed. Ms. Stuart manages somehow, to convey a complete romance in her story. There's a prologue that makes you wonder....an epilogue that is really cute. In between you have, as the girls call him, a "hottie" for a hero, and a very different heroine. Sexy, fun, and romantic...and the story makes sense. Ms. Quinn's story was my disappointment. H/h spend most of a short story, apart. And, Gabe's gift from his "ex-wife" made no real sense,to me. Finally, Jule McBride does a story with one of my favorite romances--friends becoming lovers. I didn't like the use of the baby, in this one. But, the story is romantic and is a good, sexy read.

Weird, but highly entertaining........1999-04-02
Hey, in todays' world, who needs reality? This is a book that can relieve you of your troubles. It takes you from the here and now and places you in the world of a genius cat. Would that I could own a cat such as Familiar! Though sheer fantasy, Caroline's book is a delightful read. It'll make you smile.
A Light, Fun Romp.......1999-03-10
"Familiar Valentine" is Caroline Burnes' latest tale of Familiar, the crime-solving cat. While it isn't as complex or rich as her other books, it is an entertaining story. Celeste Levert is a woman on the run from a man who insists on marrying her. Dan Carson is a man on an undercover assignment--who can't resist helping a damsel in distress once Familiar points him in her direction. But with danger chasing both of them, together might just be the most dangerous place they can be.
The story moves very fast--too fast for me to believe it actually. But even when the story isn't too grounded in reality, Familiar is, and his wise comments are just as on target as ever. (I loved when, just when I was thinking that their relationship was moving too fast, Familiar said the same thing!) I especially liked Celeste, who, like so many Burnes heroines, gets a great moment to show just how tough she is in the climax. Of course, we know Dan is Celeste's Mr. Right, not her fiance (I almost died laughing when I realized what her married name would have been--a very nice touch on Ms. Burnes' part), and the connection between them is a bit obvious. But there are enough twists and turns, and you can never know who is good and who is bad, to get us to the end. A bit too unbelievable and not her best work (I'd start with "Familiar Fire" or "Too Familiar" first), but a funny, entertaining read nonetheless.

Top ghost romance - Gina Wilkins again delivers a great read.......2002-07-21
A Valentine wish is Anna Cameron's story. She and her twin brother Ian have been ghosts staying at the Cameron inn for 75 years since the day they both were murdered on their 25th birthday. Their late mother's wish after their birth on Valentine's day was they both shall find a love as great as their parents' - otherwise they won't leave this world. Dean Gates, the new owner of the Cameron inn, is the only one who can see Anna. He tries to solve the mystery behind their deaths and falls in love with the beautiful and charming ghost. Ian's story is A Wish For Love, don't miss it.
Gina Wilkins is one of my favorite authors. Her writing is beautiful and humorous, I have yet to read a book by her that I don't like. Thanks for some pleasant reading hours, Gina.
A Valentine Wish.......2000-04-22
I read this novel a few years ago and I cannot stop thinking about it. I thought that it was a wonderful story, both sad and endering. I really loved it and when I found out that there was a part two called "A Wish For Love" I searched everywhere for it but i could not find a copy. I only recently found out that it was out of print. I would love to read the second novel about the twin brother, I'm sure it will be as great as the first one. Thank you!

I love a love story.......2002-01-10
If you haven't read a good romance lately, take a look at Pam Bauer's latest. I've been a fan of Bauer's since I read WALKING ON SUNSHINE. Her characters are real people who grab you by the heart with their problems. Maddie is an independent woman who refuses to let her teenage crush on the hero tempt her to lose control. Well, she does try. And I love the way she loses!
This book has more depth than the usual light romance. It's a very satisfying read that has more to it than a happy ending. Living in a boardinghouse with the hero an unexpected fellow guest creates some interesting situations. I give this book 5 stars.

A charming Valentine story -- Recommended.......2002-01-10
For thirteen years Dylan has carried a secret about his father that created distance between himself and his family. Now Dylan arrives home, where he'll visit for six weeks while recovering from surgery, not expecting the profound changes he finds. His mother is taking belly dancing lessons, died her hair blond, got rid of her glasses and lost weight. The house has likewise been transformed, and Dylan isn't necessarily happy with all the changes. Worse, his mother's new job has her working as a "romance coach." Dylan blames the changes on the influence of his mother's boarder Maddie Lamont. Dylan hasn't seen Maddie since she was fourteen, and her transformation is also profound.
Dylan would like to be the advice-filled, world-wise big brother, but he hasn't been around enough to nurture a relationship with his brothers. Indeed, he leaves his island paradise not so much to reconcile with his family, as to flee a woman who wants to take their relationship to the next level. Although he initially fights his attraction to Maddie, he finds himself quite challenged to get close her. Maddie has been casually seeing someone else for six months, and she doesn't want a man who's not going to stick around. But then, she's never reacted to anyone the way she reacts to Dylan.
Pamela Bauer pens a character driven romance in 14 VALENTINE PLACE. In the beginning, readers may feel a bit ambivalent about Dylan as he initially presents himself as superficial. Dylan doesn't like the changes in his mother, his youngest brother's life altering decisions, or Maggie's influence. As a result, he acts like a thirty-one-year-old spoiled, petulant boy until a brother reminds him that he's the one who chose to absent himself from their lives. As he becomes honest with himself about his feelings for Maggie, however, Dylan becomes the hero romance lovers expect.
The key to 14 VALENTINE PLACE is honesty. As characters become honest with themselves about their feelings and desires, and then with one another, the magic of love does the rest, whether the magic occur within a romantic context or between family members. In addition, Maddie makes a captivating heroine with her charming stubbornness and determination. Further, secondary characters truly sparkle, especially Dylan's mother whether adorned in her belly dancing costume or giving love advice. Recommended.

An affair thwarted!.......2005-05-09
Tumultuous would be the word that best describes this love affair. Alex Pemberton, a junior reporter for the newspaper is assigned to do a Valentine's special feature article on 3 couples. The top story is to be on well-known wealthy Leo Hamilton and his rumoured fiance, whom she has past connections from her childhood. She had a tremendous crush on him in her wild child days (she was a rebellious teenager, misunderstood etc.) Alas, the budding relationship was nipped in the bud, before it could bloom by both sets of parents. Alex tricks her way into Leo's bank, to request an interview with him and preceeds to blackmail him with an accounting of the mistreatment she received from Leo's family. As sparks between reignite and they restart their relationship, Alex struggles with trust issues while she fights her fierce sexual attraction to Leo. Unable to take a leap of faith she bungles her story and ruins her relationship with Leo. Furiously angry with her lack of trust in him and how she badly treated his ex-fiance/girlfriend, Leo deeply humiliates her publicly in a dance where he purposely dances her so that her strapless dress gets turned around (back to front) and her breasts are exposed to all at the highly publicised event (media is present). Sobbing and deeply upset, Alex flees the scene. This particular scene was just a touch too cruel for my personal liking and the fact that the story jumps to happily ever after within a few pages is just too unbelievable. The emotional wrangling between the two protanginists is too messy (fights between hopping into bed) and should have been resolved. Alex should have been portrayed as a more likeable figure who confronts her jealousy issues and Leo could have been more understanding. I think the final act of humiliation is just over-the-top in emotional scarring and certainly the heroine would have found it difficult to forgive. It was inappropriate. A scene where he reprimanded her and broke it off with her would have been sufficient.
She is Going to Get the Story, One Way or Another.......2004-04-01
Young Alex Permberton, junior reporter for the London Chronicle, fears the worst when the paper's new editor Mike Tanner invites her to a staff meeting. She'd never been to one before and Tanner had recently cleaned house. Alex was surprised she still had a job. However at the staff meeting, Tanner wants her to beef up her Valentine's Day story and she promises to get the lowdown on wealthy bachelor Leo Hamilton's engagement to Fiona Bliss. Nobody on the staff believes she can get Leo to sit for an interview, but Alex has an ace up her sleeve. Leo is her stepbrother. Well, kind of, her mother was married to his father for a few months ages ago.
Alex tricks her way into Leo's office at the powerful bank he runs by pretending to be his fiancèe. However, Leo is not impressed and refuses the interview. Then Alex sort of blackmails him by threatening to do a story about how his mother had accused her of stealing a diamond broach when she was a little girl and had her throw in jail, only to find the broach later, so not wanting his well known mother dragged through the mud, Leo agrees to the interview. But that's not the only reason he agrees. There is something about Alex that makes his blood race. And Alex finds her emotions raging out of control around Leo as well.
Will Alex get her story or will she get her man instead? Will she get both or will she be the story? Ms. Lyons keeps you wondering right up to the end in this excellent romance that I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

Book Description
Ed is an aspiring writer. He really wants to be published. But Ed Broth's problem is that he writes short pieces and send them in to the wrong places. For example, Ed writes a story about his clothesline and then... sends it to Fencing Quarterly. When the editor writes back explaining that his magazine is about fencing rather than clotheslines, Ed does what any ambitious writer would do: he revises. And then resubmits his story--now containing hilariously ham-handed additions about fencing--to the same editor. Stories From A Moron collects not only Ed's work but the letters between Ed and the beleaguered editors of the publications he submits to. It's nutty humour at its deadpan best.
"Welcome to the world of Ed Broth. I think we can all use a warm clear liquid with a faintly chickeny smell right about now." --Jerry Seinfeld

Hysterical.......2007-03-24
The best thing about it is the stories inetrtwine. You'll be reading one, not sure if the guy is totally on drugs, and a few chapters later something will come up that causes tears to well up from laughter.
A perscription to cure depression and bad moods.
A Bit Of A Letdown.......2007-03-02
When I ordered "Stories From A Moron", I was very excited because I've enjoyed the Letters from a Nut series so much. I expected a similar experience. While the book is not a total loss, I did not feel like it lived up to the Letters series of books.
The premise of the book is that Ed Broth is crafting these silly stories and sending them in for review by publishers. The book is composed of the stories and the exchanges sent back and forth regarding the stories. It's a humorous premise but the execution was lacking. The stories are short, rarely more than 2 pages, but they, as you work through the book, become a bore to work through. It seemed like every story had the same set of themes. So, each new story that is presented is like re-reading the same thing over again. This goes on throughout the book. Of course, one can skim the stories and just read the replies. Sadly, the replies received are rarely more than just form letters. Editors probably receive plenty of terrible stories like the ones in this book all the time and so few bother to respond with a personal remark.
So that left me with the fact that I was reading these terrible stories and the payoff of a humorous response never came from the editor. In contrast, Letters from a Nut works because Seinfeld is writing to customer service depts that have to deal with each request separately. In this book, he's just sending the same question [Will you publish this?] over and over again. The response is always going to be no so there's nothing to really laugh about in the responses.
There are a few bits in the book that made me laugh and at the bargain price I got it for from Amazon, I'm not terribly upset with the book, I would have just preferred another volume in the Letters series.
sincerely,
R.C.
Not up to Par.......2006-10-14
Having read the Letters from a Nut series, I was excited to see this title. After reading though, the main problem is the length of the stories. The letters were just the right length to get in some absurdiy, then let the targets reply. In this book, the Stories drag on forever, with people regurgitating things, men trying to kiss the male narrator, his girlfriend and chihuahua sharing a name, leading to reader boredom. Halfway through, I started thumbing for the replies.
I laughed so hard I couldn't breath.......2006-01-25
I read "Stories from a Moron" recently, and I laughed so hard at times that I couldn't catch my breath. If you like absurd humor - you'll love this book. If you think that "Letters From A Nut" is funny, you haven't seen anything yet.
Worst Humorous book.........2005-10-15
This is a worst book I ever read. Also it is not written by Jerry Seinfeld but forwarded by him. And I picked it up because of Seinfelds name. This book lacks humor. Its no way at the level of Larry Davids or Costanzas character. The chapters are just repetetive. Crappy letters and stories can be very humorous, but that humour is completely lacking in this book. I am giving it a 1 star because that is the lowest I can go. Avoid this. It is a waste of time. Broth must try a bit hard for his next publication. Seinfeld shows that he can be a loyal friend by giving a forward to this book, I guess, without reading it.
