Book Description

Hundreds of years in the future, Manhattan has become a deadly slum, run by mutant crime-lords and disinterested cops. Stuck in the middle is a young girl who thought she had no future, but learns she has a great destiny. In a world so poisoned that it doesn't notice the monsters on its streets, how can a street kid like Fray unite a fallen city against a demonic plot to consume mankind? Joss Whedon, the celebrated creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, brings his vision to the future in this unique tale. As inventive in the comics medium as in that of television of film, Whedon spins a complex tale of a skilled thief coming of age without the help of friends or family, guided only by a demonic Watcher.

4 out of 5 stars Fray the Vampire Slayer.......2007-09-20

I have officially been converted. I can now say that I'm a Joss Whedon fan. I never watched his previous vampire sagas, Buffy and Angel, however, I did catch his excellent series Firefly, his sci-fi series which was more up my alley.

Fray is also a futuristic tale, taking place 200 years into the future of the Buffy universe. It has been a very long time since the last slayer, and the time has come when one has to be called upon. Enter Melaka Fray, a thief with a complicated history. While she's a crook her older sister, Erin, is a police sergeant. To top it off, four years ago her twin brother Harth was killed by a vampire when he was helping her steal and she has never forgiven herself for it. A demon named Urkonn finds Mel and reveals to her that it's her destiny to become a slayer.

That is the set up, and the pay off is quite enjoyable. The story moves along at such a rapid pace that it was impossible for me to get bored. Whedon's writing is very cinematic with plenty of conflict, twists, and surprises. We're introduced to Mel plummeting from a skyscraper and hitting every flying car she can on the way to break her fall. There's a lot of action in every chapter, but plenty of humor, drama and witty dialog in between to balance it out and keep me satisfied.

The artwork by Karl Moline works really well. I had never seen anything he worked on prior to this. I always took the time to appreciate the landscapes of this alternate future, and he's just as adept at illustrating a good fight scene as he is at getting across a character's emotions through facial expressions and body language. Inker Andy Owens, does well and the colors are provided by Dave Stewart whose work I'm very familiar with who is joined by Michelle Madsen here.

A very enjoyable read all the way through. And if you need proof that you don't have to be a Buffy fan prior to reading this to appreciate it, then consider this it. Bring on the sequel!

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-04

This is a decent story, but nothing that exciting. Melaka Fray is a cross between Dark Angel, Faith and Tank Girl, if you want a comparison.

In the future, there are plenty of mutants, so vampires go less remarked on than they would if they wandered around in the current day.

She has no Watcher, except for a demon that turns up to tell her a few things. Apparently being born with a twin brother has done a few odd things.

Her sister is a cop, which also gives her grief, and the vampires are growing in nmumbers and organising.

4 out of 5 stars Solid new story from the creator of Buffy........2007-08-27

A great story written in the future of the Buffy-verse. What makes it so great, is that you don't even have to be a Buffy or Angel fan to pick up this book & like it. Buffy fans well still be happy with the obscure references through out the story but non fans of the show won't miss out on anything if they don't pick up on them. The characters & their development through out the story were very good. The story itself was a solid read as well as a good ending that leaves you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars It's Not Often That I Give a "Comic" A Classic Rating, But..........2007-07-27

Joss Whedon's "Fray" is exactly what I've been looking for; a tale set in the Buffyverse that's long enough to satisfy my need for a Whedony tale. While the Buffy: Season Eight comics are great (9/10 for the most part, in my humble opinion), the issues that have been released so far are choppy, mostly because they, unlike "Fray", are the OPENING chapters of a larger story. "Fray" is standalone, and it's tells a great tale that, listen up continuity freaks like myself, is canon.

The story, like any Joss comic, is integrated with a few non-linear scenes. In the case of "Fray", this helps the narrative flow immensely. The flash-backs into Melaka Fray's past make the impact of the big-surprise-twist in the story very effective, and just adds to the entire emotional wallop. And quite a wallop it is. I've never, as of yet, been brought to tears by a comic, but I can say that "Fray" almost brought me to the misty-eyed point. The combination of stupendous characterization, an epic story that has huge (and very relatable) themes, and beautifully quirky art just make this item a great overall package.

Some of the finer points are Melaka Fray herself, who is a much more likable slayer than one Buffy Summers, who can be--at times--a bit annoying with the whole "You don't understand my suffering, so I can mistreat you attitude." Don't get me wrong, I love the Buffster, I'm just saying that it's great to meet a more... erm... lighthearted Slayer. Her, Loo, Urkonn, even the villains are so well done that I find myself aching for a sequel, or perhaps a movie adaptation.

This trade paperback (or 'graphic novel', for you uppity folks) isn't only for fans of Buffy, Angel, and Joss Whedon. Anyone who has an open mind for fantasy will pretty much enjoy this eight issue miniseries, if not for the sheer beauty of the volume.

10/10 Classic.

4 out of 5 stars More, please.......2007-03-22

What does Joss Whedon do when he wants to write about a vampire slayer who's not Buffy? He taps into the past, of course -- or looks into the future.

Fray, written by Whedon and illustrated by Karl Moline, leaps a couple of centuries down the road to a time where flying cars are commonplace and demons roam the Earth. It's a time when people no longer believe in vampires -- a 21st-century slayer, possibly Buffy, vanquished all demons and half-demons from our dimension, we're told -- but now the vampires, or "lurks," are back. And, with a few hundred years of peace in their wake, they find a world without a slayer, a world where the council of Watchers has fallen into disarray and madness, a world where no one is prepared to face or resist them.

At least, not until young thief Melaka Fray is suddenly flooded with power. And a demon, for reasons of his own, takes the place of a Watcher and begins her training.

Fray collects an eight-issue miniseries that is too short by far to tell the full story of Melaka's adventures. After all, Buffy had a feature film, seven seasons of television and a host of comic-book yarns to work with, and she still has storytelling potential to spare. But this book does a great job of introducing an exciting new character, defining her futuristic world (did I mention the flying cars?) and populating it with an interesting array of allies, sidekicks and adversaries. I hope there's more to come.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly satisfactory.......2007-07-14

I recently started using this product in my free time and during piano lessons i take and have found the product very satisfactory if you'd like the piano part with the vocal line in it. the songs sound like the actual songs but are not ,however, written in the same way that they appear in the actual songs. this was a problem i encountered but many people may not be bothered by this fact. if you are not bothered by this detail the product is very good and i encourage you to buy it

5 out of 5 stars Great when the songwriter is a pianist!!.......2007-06-18

When selecting piano music I always feel more assured when the songwriter is a pianist. Since Isaac Slade is a pianist the music we get to play is truer to the music we hear on their CD; another great example of this it Five For Fighting's "100 Years" by John Ondrasik. Most of the songs in The Fray's book are awesome to play and not terribly difficult. The rhythms are a bit tricky at times, but mastered with some devoted practice. Most of the songs in the book are in the key of Bb, Ab, and Cmin. I love the intro to "Hundred," classical stuff; listening to Isaac play it, and then myself, sounds spot on. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great music by the Fray.......2007-01-15

This product consists of excellent arrangements of music by the Fray. The arrangements are geared toward pianists with medium level skills but are useful also for other skill levels. Definitely worth the price...a wonderful addition to my music library.

5 out of 5 stars Love it.......2007-01-11

I think this is a great piano book. The songs on piano sound very true to the originals. I get really annoyed when I buy piano arrangements that have a separate voice line, and the piano part sounds completely different and is just accompaniment to that, so unless you sing along it doesn't sound like the song. But on this one what you play sounds like The Fray.

I didn't notice a problem of songs being transposed. My favourite tracks are Look After You and Vienna, and I had no problem trying to play along with those. In fact, I just tried all the songs out and the ones that have been transposed are: All at Once, Fall Away, Heaven Forbid, Dead Wrong, Little House. These are all transposed by a semitone, for instance from B major to B-flat major. I guess they thought 5 sharps would be too tricky. The good news is that at least for some of them it's not too hard to transpose back to the original key on the fly- it's usually just a matter of adding a sharp to all the notes.

I still recommend it!

3 out of 5 stars Great songs, but with no warning of multiple transpositions..........2007-01-09

Bought this mainly because of two songs: How to Save a Life and Cable Car (Over My Head). I wasn't disappointed with those two. The arrangements are great and in the right keys. So I was really looking forward to the book as a whole.

Problem, there are very few mentions of this on the first pages of the different songs, but quite a few of them have been transposed, which isn't so fun when you were planning on playing along. So a bit misleading, especially if they plan on catching people offguard in a bookstore where they can't test the keys, but still a good buy.

        Book Description

This volume engages the work of Walter Brueggemann by centering on the character of God in the text of the Old Testament as a site of theological tension and even ambivalence. Walter Brueggemann's monumental theology of the Old Testament addresses this fact with great theological insight and rigor, and these internationally renowned biblical scholars engage and extend his insights into the "unsettled Character . . . at the center of the text."

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Walter Brueggemann is a Master........1999-03-29

A Master that thousands have either read or had the privilege to study under over the last three decades. The author of more than 25 books, many consider him "to be the most seminal Old Testament Theologian since Eichrodt and von Rad." God in the Fray is a tribute to Walter Brueggemann, edited by two former pupils (both of whom are now professors of biblical or religious studies). It is not common for students to publish a tribute to their teacher. This act alone speaks of Brueggemann's accomplishment and mastery.

"Master" is a word not often used in today's technologically dominated society. A Master is known by the width and depth of the wisdom and truth they emanate. They are able to present truth in such a way that it is directly applicable to the lives of their listeners. A master in theology is one who has the ability to make complex old paradigms understandable and shows how the application of these maxims has the power to transform both thinking and structure itself.

In God in the Fray, twenty-one accomplished theologians have engaged Brueggemann's thinking and theology and give their own interpretation to an often controversial and challenging scholar. Dr. Walter Brueggemann is complex, odd and unsettling in his understanding of Yahweh. His faith and theology are never static, rather continually on the move, challenging, probing and often perplexing. He relentlessly seeks out "a fresh articulation of whom God is," for he believes that the church and its future rest on a fresh understanding and pronouncement of God. Brueggemann, who like the very God he follows, resists fitting into any comfortable systematic category. He is constantly pressing boundaries, challenging old God images and pulling down contemporary idolatrous icons in order that a new awareness will grasp the believer, and in doing so transform the society in which the church lives. Most contributors to God in the Fray have the pulse of Brueggemann, but some fret over his theological condition. Their concern is akin to a medical doctor saying, "ah, if he would just stabilize we could better define his condition."

As with any anthology most authors illuminate the subject, while some tend to obscure; one writer will prophetically speak into your life, while the next author may drone and ramble. Thus, God in the Fray is an anthology, giving tribute to a great man and master. Recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Book Report of AMIDST THE FRAY by WD Mounger.......2006-10-03

And now we know the rest of the story. . .

Thesaurus, unabridged, one each, in hand, I embarked on a most unusual but enjoyable trek into this autobiographical masterpiece confidant that I could master whatever the illustrious Potentate and his faithful scribe, Maxwell, could muster. It did not occur to me until midway thru the body of the book that the 'wortebuch' was useless since the protagonist, when in need of a word, just made one up. I do not recall that option in plebe English.

I am writing this review while on a most deserved, self-induced sabbatical after reading the main body of the book. My cursory review of the appendices indicated that they contained much unedited prose and poetry written by the subject which would go much slower than what I had already read since they had been written without the adult supervision of a mere mortal. It is no wonder that WD has not embraced the computer age. The cost involved to completely populate the spellcheck database might break him. I now know one of the reasons he proffered, Peggy Mize -his secretary for 40 years, to sainthood.

Almost immediately, the reader is impressed with the style and demeanor of the author in his ability to, among other things, choose adjectives that pale their respective nouns in size, difficulty, and majesty. Additionally, his many herculean accomplishments in the fields of life, faith, business, the arts, and politics were underscored by his adamance that the story be told as it happened and not as it might later be spun. He told his story "with the bark on" as LBJ would say and maintained throughout that the truth is an absolute defense. His unabashed pronouncement of West Point would stiffen the spine of even the grayest of hogs and render a severe chastisement to the rest of those who know their debt to that great institution has not been paid.

Duty, Honor, Country - the ancient motto of the Academy - often quoted but seldom toted, did not come from a Madison Avenue public relations firm. It came from the heart and guts of the Billy Moungers of the world who live those words and curmudgeoningly admonish those who don't. I am convinced that his cadet experience snuffed out whatever libertarian proclivities he may have possessed and am equally convinced that his decision to commit himself to conservativism, a most natural mate for such a motto, while imposing this most elegant, simple, and straightforward of protocols upon those who rode with him, will gain him great favor with the Master of All and supernumery merit by doing it in the field of politics, the most noble of callings but one of the lowest denominators of deportment on earth. The yearling who quite properly pronounced our dear `Curly' a carnivore could not possibly appreciate his pregnant prescience of so long ago. Illegitimus non carborundum!

This book is not for the faint of heart or those who believe as Henry Ford that "history is bunk." On the literary scale of magnificence, I place AMONGST THE FRAY solidly among those classics such as CAESAR'S COMMENTARIES and DUCROT PEYPS.

I read this book cover to cover just prior to my trip to England (along with Antonia Fraser's "The Lives of the Kings & Queens of England"). This was a fun and easy read with nice pitcures. It is nice for anyone looking for a brief overview about the English Monarchy and also for anyone who just wants to have a handy reference.

I bought this book many years ago, and I still pick it up at least once a month. The book gives you the most important information of every king and queen who has ever ruled England or Scotland.

As I turn the pages, I can see that there is something interesting about every regent, and by the way; this book makes you realize that royal scandals are not a new invention.

I have now read through this book twice - once before each of my trips to Great Britain - and have found this book to be immensely helpful in understanding Britain's past and present. The book purports to be about the British monarchy, but in addition to thoroughly covering royalty, this book also covers a fair amount of history so the reader has some feel for the cultural setting of the monarchs as well. There are numerous color illustrations and photographs throughout the text, finely placed, and quite instructive. Each monarch has typically 2-4 pages devoted to their reign, with important dates and events set out in an easy to consult style. Some attempt is made to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each ruler and to assess how the British peoples fared under their guidance. In general, the presentation is fair-minded, following Shakespeare's dictum to comment on each ruler as s/he appeared, "nothing extenuant, nor aught set down in malice."

There are periodically pages devoted to related topics such as the origins of Parliament, the Magna Carta, Chivalrous Orders (such as the Order of the Garter), War of the Roses, coronation of the Prince of Wales, castle construction (explaining terms like motte and bailey), or Empire Building. Events such as the 1381 Peasants Revolt, the 1666 Fire of London, or the Great Exhibition of 1851 (sharing scientific advancements from the Industrial Revolution) are richly illustrated, with commentary provided to explain their significance.

The Kings of Scotland are discussed separately, with historical figures like Robert the Bruce or William Wallace being treated in the narratives. Eventually, the Scottish and English/Welch monarchies converged with with the coronation of James I in 1603.

In all, Plantagenet Somerset Fry has done an absolutely first rate job of creating an introductory book on the British Monarchy. I found it quite helpful in keeping things straight in my mind (e.g. keeping all the Edward's and Henry's and George's distinct.) It is an excellent book to read either for pleasure, for instruction, or for historical guidance while touring the British Isles.

            4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Resource!.......1999-02-04

I use this book as a quick reference to all things royal in England & Scotland. It is full of beautiful color photos and very well-crafted.

            3 out of 5 stars Byrne is a bit of a rogue.......2003-07-01

This is as fun as any number of similar books, perhaps even more so, but there are some er... surprising features:
            - a fair number of the "best things anyone's ever said" were apparently said by Robert Byrne himself. Hmm...
            - Where Byrne doesn't like the quote he just changes it, Oscar Wilde in particular gets mangled
            - I can't prove it, but I'm sure some of these quotes are just made up: one from Andrew Mellon in particular rings false
            - Sometimes he gives the source of the quote, sometimes he can't be bothered
            - Michael Douglas is "Michael Douglas, actor and producer", all the other yahoos you've never heard of remain just a bunch of names

Anyway - there are 2 types of readers out there: those that find Byrne's roguishness charming, and those that don't. I'm sort of in the former group, as is Byrne himself.

            5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining........2002-09-20

Usually, I only review music, but I just have to put in my two cents on this book.

Perhaps a better title for this extremely entertaining quote book is "The 2,548 Best Things Anybody Ever Said When They Were In A Really Cynical Mood." By limiting himself to the acerbic, Robert Byrne has created a most unusual quote book. Unlike most qoute books, this is not a reference book, but rather a book to be read for pleasure.

All in all, superb bathroom reading.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable conversation piece type book.......2001-12-16

Maybe 2,548 quotes but not that many different quotes. The book is a combination of his previous four books. They are placed one after the other and bound together as one book. The problem is that the books have not been culled of repeats. So, many quotes show up in all four books and therefore show up four times in this book.
I will have to say that it contains lots of quotes that I have not seen anywhere else and it is an enjoyable read. Each of the four books is organized into logical sections and related quotes in each section.
When you have ten minutes of time to kill it is easy to pick up and read a few passages and then put it down. It is an interesting read and is well worth the price even with the repeats.

3 out of 5 stars Unusually Quote Book, but Fun.......2000-09-21

I thought that this book was funny. For the most part, it doesn't include quotations that you will find in other places. Instead the author quotes people from Johnny Carson to Winston Churchill. There doesn't seem to be an predictable connection, except the personal preferences of the author. As such, if you thing like the author, it makes for an interesting read. I guess it would be of the most use for people who want a good quote, that few other people would use. I haven't used the book professionally, but I enjoyed reading it from time to time.

And, as a bonus, the author adds in some interesting pictures which I really enjoyed.

3 out of 5 stars Fair to Middlin' Quotation Book.......2000-08-12

The title is a bit of an overstatement, but I suppose The Big Book of Light, Frothy, Pretty Good Quotes wouldn't have the same impact. This is still a fun book. Byrne sometimes tries a bit too hard to be clever, and I particularly wish that when quoting tv shows or movies he showed the courtesy of citing that actual scriptwriter.

But these are quibbles. For about a half-cent per quote this is a good deal. There's something fun on every page, and the organizational approach of allowing one topic to flow into another related topic allows this to flow much better than other similar books (an index still lets you find particular quotes on demand).

If you enjoy this, Laurence Peter's Quotation collection is a somewhat higher quality work with the same sort of attitude.
