Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Truly An Essential Reference.......2001-02-08

Concordance like in nature, Oliver's "Ernest Hemingway: A to Z" is one of those books that should always be within arm's reach. It contains detailed plot summaries not only for all of Hemingway's novels, but also his short stories, nearly 50 b&w photos of Ernest in all his glory, a Hemingway family tree, an extensive bibliography of works by and about Hemingway, a list of film, stage, television, and radio adaptations of Hemingway's work, and a Hemingway chronology. Oliver deserves great praise for this invaluable contribution to Hemingway scholarship.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource regarding Hemingway's life and works........1999-07-25

Oliver's "A To Z" joins Michael Reynolds' "Hemingway, The Final Years," as one of the two or three really valuable books to be issued or reissued in this, the centennial year of Hemingway's birth. As a Hemingway scholar, former editor of "The Hemingway Review" and a dealer in collectible Hemingway editions, Oliver is eminently suited to the task of preparing what amounts to a Hemingway encyclopedia. Casual readers of Hemingway's work and Papa aficionados will find equal value in this book. It is particularly refreshing to have a volume such as this one that confines itself to the facts of the life and the (reasonable) scholarly conjectures regarding the text and subtext of Hemingway's books and short stories. To his credit, Oliver doesn't feel compelled to include listings for Duff Twysden or Harold Loeb, citing them as "obvious" inspirations for certain fictional characters who crop up in a certain Hemingway novel released in the mid-Twenties. One caveat: Given the fact that this book is intended as a reference volume - and therefore a book to be consulted more than once - it is lamentable such a thin grade of paper was chosen (blame the publisher, not Oliver). Therefore, take durability where you can find it and buy the hardback edition.

5 out of 5 stars Any student of Hemingway needs this book!.......1999-04-07

Charles Oliver has put together a remarkable reference book for both Hemingway fans and scholars alike. As the title suggests, this is a truly "essential" book for the serious student studying Hemingway's life or his work. It includes summaries of all the novels, all the stories, many of his newspaper and magazine articles and a wealth of biographical and historical information. The book also has one of the finest bibliographies of Hemingway and Hemingway-related works available. On top of all this is a wonderul, easy-to-read timeline of Hemingway's life and the important events which helped shape the work of this century's most enduring author.

4 out of 5 stars A gold mine of info for hamingway aficionados long overdue.......1999-04-02

Charles M. Oliver. Ernest Hemingway A to Z: The Essential Reference to His Life and Work.

Facts on File. Jun. 1999. c.411p. illus. index. ISBN 0-8160-3467-2. $50. LIT

All things Hemingway here are dissected and rearranged alphabetically, from that magic elixir "absinthe" to bullfighter "Zurito"-2500 cross-referenced entries in all, although oddly the phrase "the true gen" is absent. The book also includes several top-notch appendixes of maps, a Hemingway family tree, a chronology and dateline, a bibliography, a complete list of his writings with publication history, and an index. An absolute gold mine for Hemingway aficionados that is long overdue.--Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"

5 out of 5 stars THIS ONE IS A BIT DIFFERENT!.......2007-07-29

I have had the pleasure of reading several (actually, quite a few), biographies concerning Hemingway over the years. Some were good, others not so good and some were absolutely horrible. With each book tough, good or bad, I did learn something new about E. Hemingway and/or his writing. This is a good thing. This particular biography by Kenneth S. Lynn is yet another take on the man and the ledged who was Ernest Hemingway. No I am not a big fan of Hemingway's novels, but am a great fan of his short stories, but overall I find that the "man" Hemingway is actually more fascinating that the "writing" of Hemingway. That being said....

This work by Kenneth Lynn probably addresses Hemingway's actual work more than most of the biographies I have read. Most of his major and quite a number of minor works are covered here. The author discusses these works in conjunction with what the author knows, or has speculated, of Hemingway's life. It has been mentioned by a couple of reviewers that this is a revisionist view of Hemingway and his work. I personally do not look at it as such. Even a cursory review of Hemingway's work reveals a very troubled man behind the words and the story. There is really nothing "new" here, only a different way of looking at the facts we all pretty well can figure out for ourselves with a bit of attention. This work, like all works of this nature has pros and cons. First the pros:

The work is well done, well written and certainly holds readers attention. As far as I can tell, the author has done his research and done it well. The author has given us some great food for thought as we read Hemingway's work and I know, I for one, will read EH in a bit of a different light from now on. This is good. The author has presented his arguments and observations in a very forceful and convincing way. Each statement he makes, each speculation, is backed up with quite sound logic. The author has written an interesting biography, one well worth the read. The Background information, in particular that of the literati establishment in Paris during the twenties and thirties, is quite well done in this work. We get great glimpses of some very famous people. I think most readers will learn a lot from reading this work. I know I did. Now for the cons:

Like another reviewer here, I simply do not know the qualifications of Kenneth S. Lynn as to the validity of some of the speculations he makes about the influences Hemingway's family had over his work. I do not know what the qualifications are of the author as to how he can speculate what was actually going on in HM's mind as he was writing a certain piece. It would seem that everything that HM ever put on paper had some sexual deeper meaning to it, according to Lynn. I find this difficult to fully believe. Some times a story is just a story and nothing more. Next, I felt the author was one of those that jumped on the "lets bash Hemingway" band wagon that seems to pop up about every twenty years, as this certainly is not a book that admirers of HM will appreciate. (It is childish of me, I know, but I would love to be in a room with Lynn and Hemingway as Lynn reads this book to Hemingway). Everyone the poor man ever knew or spoke to, seems to have written a book about him or is trying to. (At least Lynn did not rant on for over 600 pages trying to prove that HM was a homosexual as Mellow did in his work "Hemingway, A Life Without Consequences." This author, Lynn, as far as I can tell, feels HM is only suffered from gender confusion, or something like that.

All in all this book is well worth the read. It gives us just one more slant of the life of a fascinating man. I do recommend though, that the reader check out, read and discover several other biographies on HM as this one being reviewed here is certainly not the beginning and end of all Hemingway biographies. I would also suggest you read the fine work by Noel Riley Fitch, "Sylvia Beach and the Lost Generation." Some of the folks, writers, artists, publishers, etc. are not all that well know today to the general public, are pretty obscure now, and a bit of knowledge of these people will make reading Lynn's work much more pleasurable.

Overall, recommend this one highly. I am giving it five stars, not because I agree with or believe everything the author has written, but because he, Lynn, has written it well and it has given me something to think about...something I always appreciate.

      5 out of 5 stars All-Encompassing. .......2007-03-11

Kenneth Lynn's biographical treatment of Ernest Hemingway is thorough and magnificent. It satisfied me for several reasons--not the least of which was the cheap z shop price I paid for it. What I liked about the narrative best is Lynn's habit of discussing Hemingway's work and life simultaneously. Just as with the man, the fiction blends in seamlessly with the non-fiction. The body of the text is almost 600 pages long and a solid half is devoted to those halcyon years of productivity; that wondrous decade of artistic bliss between 1920 and 1930. Due to the expansiveness of the biography and literary analysis I found those pages to be highly addictive reading. Indeed, I've just purchased Finca Vigia edition of his short stories and will devour them with a keen level of appreciation due to the efforts of Mr. Lynn. Personally, I did not find this biography to be revisionist. There was a great deal of atmospherics inherent to the masculinity of Ernest Hemingway. How much the macho corresponded with his true essence will always be subject to debate. This is not a controversial statement as Gertrude Stein, Zelda Fitzgerald, and countless others noticed the disingenuous, "tries too hard" aspects of his personality. He was a caricature in many ways, but I continue to find his style beguiling and life mesmerizing.

      3 out of 5 stars risky business.......2002-08-27

Lynn's book is the third Hemingway biography I've read (others: A. E. Hotchner, Carlos Baker). I found KSL's book to be quite readable, and his arguments well rationalized and thought-provoking. His exploitation of the psychological perspective is unique among the Hemingway biographies I've read or heard of, and in the abstract, his thesis is plausible. That there could be a neurotic, unconsciously destructive mother (or father for that matter) who could cause severe and lasting psychological damage to her children, is hardly news. However, getting inside another man's head is risky business - all the more so when the associated analysis will run into hundreds of pages and involve articulating the life long effects of childhood damage, character flaws, etc and following them into and back from Hemingway's work. The possibilities for misinterpretation, misunderstanding, and unconscious personal bias etc., are infinite.

In the final event, I found I couldn't give full credence to this style of biography, at least not without having certain knowlege of its author's powers of mind, life experience, and his ability to judge another man's character - things that a reader typically can not know about an author. Notwithstanding, I'm glad to have read the volume, and it offers a counterbalance to Carlos Baker's biography of Hemingway, sometimes criticized as too uncritical of the man. I still prefer Baker however, perhaps because his emphasis on literary analysis is of more interest to me and less 'risky'. And, Baker's companion work, "Hemingway, The Writer as Artist" dovetails nicely with his biography of Hemingway.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Revisionist Literary Criticism.......2001-01-12

Lynn's gripping, well-written biography demonstates that Hemingway's real subject was *not* the advocacy of a code of aggressive macho behavior, but the price of maintaining that code. "Papa" paid that price himself by descending into madness, complicated by alcoholism and probably inherited chronic depression. Hemingway could only hint at his demons in his fiction; his famous elliptical style was the result of not being able to admit so many terrible facts to himself. Lynn also nails Hemingway's radical chic stupidities about the Spanish Civil War and his belated disillusionment with communism. He was a great writer--but his greatness sprang from lies, psychic confusion and pain. Lynn demonstates great compassion in the telling of the more awful parts of this tale. Hemingway buffs may not like this book, but they should read it--it's pretty convincing to me.

5 out of 5 stars Patrice's Review : Hemingway by Kenneth S. Lynn (hardback ).......2001-01-10

Outstanding, highly footnoted, extensive quotes from writings of
Hemingway and others and a good collection of photographs. The
chronology is excellent beginning with Hemingway's early years from
birth, high school graduation, and first job at a newspaper and
progressing to his first marriage, his European phase of his life to
the end of his life. I felt like I was living and experiencing
Hemingway's travels in Spain, Paris, Africa, Cuba, and the cafe' life.
Hemingway was very troubled, drank too much, experienced enormous
health problems, an exciting and fascinating person, and lived life to
the fullest. While I did not like his practice of putting his
friends, associaties, family, and others in fictions in ways that were
very recognizable and humiliating-- he was a prolific and dedicated
writer. Writing was his life with lots of parties and travel thrown
in for relaxing. Fishing and shooting big game were his life's
passions too besies booze and women. What a man. He did it his way as
      Frank Sinatra sang.

The extensive quotes from book critics, friends,
family, writers and associates made the book very informative and
exciting. The writing style was analytical concerning the author's
assessment of how he reached conclusions by inserting the quotes and
citations from original sources-- Hemingway's writings including
letters, letters of critics's, friends and family and extensive quotes
from these sources. I cannot imagine how anyone could rate this other
than as a highly, outstanding very scholarly book. By the way I am
way past 13 years old, a former teacher of elementary school among
many other endeavors working in housing finance and public policy,
mortgage banking, investment banking, and consulting career areas
      since 1970 to the present.

I recommend purchasing the hard copy
version for ones personal library. I could not put this book down in
a week. I completed reading it within a week despite the number of
pages; there are 597 pages not including the Notes pages in the
back. I also reread certain chapters again, did not want to put the
book down. Riviting! Lynn has increased my appreciation and
knowledge of Heminging far more than I could have hoped, exceeding my
expectations and piqued my desire to read more books by Lynn. I
looked at one of Lynn's major sources identified in Notes of the book
[Ernest Hemingway A Life Story by Carlos Baker]and by comparison
Lynn's book is far more informative, interesting, and readible because
of his extensive qoutes from original sources especially Hemingway and
because of the analysis of Hemingway's and of others
writings. Hemingway relied heavily on real people thinly disquised in
his writings which Lynn expertly described with notes and quotes. The
print is also larger in Lynn's book than that of Baker's book.
Baker's book contians the same primary information without the
      extensive analysis of Lynn's book.

                  Book Description

A simple proven method for improving cash flow so you can live rent-free and retire early

How to Invest in Condominiums provides a simple, low-risk blueprint for building cash flow by buying and renting out condominiums. You can provide for your retirement or improve your monthly income by investing in income-producing real estate at a very low risk to the capital you invest. Unlike stocks and bonds, real estate is immune to inflation and a fluctuating stock market and also provides some shelter from taxes-and the return on investment typically exceeds that of the average Wall Street investor!

The author includes a plan for getting started and a detailed record of his investments that shows how he grew a considerable cash flow-with only a small commitment of time and effort. This straightforward, realistic guide will help you:

How to Invest in Condominiums is a reliable and realistic way to supplement your income. There are no gimmicks and no strings attached and this is not a get-rich-quick scheme. It's a long-term plan that will help you meet-and surpass-your long-term goals.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great information.......2006-07-15

This is the best investment book that I have read thus far, which could mean that I haven't read enough investment books. To me, the book was a breath of fresh air, having a lot of down-to-earth, common-sense stuff. After reading it, I truly agree with the author that condominiums are a very solid, if not the best, investment. I even have a specific game plan on how to go about getting my first condo and the long term process that can make me rich if I implement it correctly, and follow the path laid out by Virsnieks.

Other business books that I have read just tell you that you have to learn to "think like the rich." These other books do not lay out a specific game plan to reach your goals. Virsnieks even gives you the details about each of his condos that he bought and gives you the exact amounts that he made on each one, and even gives figures on the ones he lost money on. He also does not tell you to be sure to buy his other books and attend his seminars so he can fill your head with more useless information and take more of your money. For this, I really respect Virsnieks. He has no hidden agenda as some other business/investment authors that I have read seem to have. He gives you a specific, easy-to-follow game plan with very attainable steps that I think just about anyone can follow.

There is one flaw that I have found with this book. Although the book was published in 2002, the author makes many references to the years 1986-1997. He never really discusses the performance of his properties beyond the year 1997, except for the fact that he added an appendix right before the book was published. Maybe this was because it took him a while to compile the info, and maybe it took a few years to get the book published after it was finished.

As the author explains, there is no get-rich-quick scheme here; it is a long process that will take a little bit of time and patience to really benefit from. But I think that's how all business works. There is no easy way out. But, using this method, you can make a lot of money and you won't have to do very much work, nor will you have to take any big risks.

I bought this book along with the one by Gary Eldred.
Eldred's had much more up to date info.
This book was full of stats from the mid to late 1990s even though it was written in 2002.
He never fully goes into the tax benefits of Real Estate especially 1031 exchanges etc.
He bought his condos at a high interest rate making his payments higher and thus affecting his formula on how to know if you are getting a good deal or not.
I can not reccomend this book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Why didn't I read this 10 years ago?.......2004-03-10

This book is so easy to read and understand. After watching my stocks loose all of their gains from the last 10 years almost over night, I determined to use this investment formula for my future. The plan is straight foreword and can be applied any where you live. I have already purchased my first rental and it is paying for itself.

                  5 out of 5 stars A real eye-opener for a new investor!.......2004-03-07

An absolute MUST-READ for renters, owners and investors! Virsnieks' book was a real eye-opener for me as a beginner, taking the scariness out of investing in real esate. He describes his very safe, easy, painless and patient step-by-step method he developed personally for buying one condominium at a time to slowly build up a real estate portfolio. His conversational tone makes his book fun to read. Buy it and read it, it will change your whole outlook on investing!

This is a very informative book. One of the great things about it is that the author provides his own personal investment story along with complete details on each investment. In other words, this is not mere theory, it is actual history that can be replicated by the savy reader and investor. While he was located in Seattle, I believe that any mid-sized to large city in the country (Atlanta, Phoenix, etc.) would provide the same condo investment climate today.
