This guide to fundraising for non profits covers the newest strategy and grand writing plans that are needed in the future.
Good Book for Start-Up Non-Profits.......2007-04-10
I found this book VERY helpful. In fact, I was so fascinated with it, I couldn't put it down. It was like a good novel. I immediately changed some of my thank you letters and re-did my Corporate request for funding letter. I will continue to use it's suggestions. The book is well written and not full of 'filler info', but very solid recommendations that one can put to use right away.
A fundraising book for the small nonprofit, or one that is not well organized!.......2006-09-06
This is a great book for the small nonprofit that does not know much about fundraising. If it were for a more established nonprofit, then it would not have referred to major gifts as those starting at $500. I'm used to major gifts starting at $10,000 and going up well into the 6 figures.
This book explains how to do the following:
1. Work with individual donors
2. Plan special events
3. Solicit grants from foundations and corporations
4. Get media coverage (publicity)
5. Use the Internet to help in the fundraising process
6. Create print marketing materials like brochures, newsletters, and annual reports
All the above are important parts of a fundraising plan. One has to set goals, strategize how to attain the goals. Then attract individual donors and develop a rapport with those donors so they give more and more each year. Eventually those donors will become major donors, but that topic is best left for another book.
The book includes a good list of Web sites for prospect research. But the appendix materials didn't seem to be up to par.
All in all, this book provides grassroots strategies for struggling nonprofits. It is no-nonsense and well organized. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn the basics about nonprofit fundraising. Topics beyond the scope of this book are planned giving, major gifts, capital campaigns, and endowments. But if you read this book and understand it, then you will be ready to learn about the other topics just mentioned. 5 stars!
Clear and Simple Explanations of What Works.......2005-06-01
There are a tremendous number of non-profits around. There are also a tremendous number of funding organizations. Your job as the fundraising manager (whatever your exact job title may be) is to put your particular non-profit together with one or more funding organizations to raise the money you need.
There is a basic set of fundraising skills and technologies that you can use to fund nearly any non-profit. Gone are the days (in most places) where you can put together some simply fund raising activity and gain enough money to get you through the year.
Here in one simple book is an excellent summary of all of the most modern techniques. It includes:
Developing a Plan that will include your goal, the assets you have to do fundraising, and a strategy to use these assets in the most profitable manner.
Attracting Individual Supporters, which means making your organization look wupport-worthy, understanding your supporters and attracting new ones.
Your best supporters are those that have given you money before. Here are the techniques to keep them giving.
These techniques and many more are discused here by an expert in the field. It should be required reading for anyone responsible for fund-raising in a worthy organization.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent resource!.......2004-09-15
As a nonprofit fundraiser/trainer, I often advise clients and students to include an evaluation component in their grant proposals. Sometimes it is hard to see the value of this expenditure, and nonprofit clients especially tend to see as a diversion of funds from their "real" work. This book goes a long way to answering these questions, for funders and grantees alike. The four short essays by prominent foundation presidents who have embraced evaluation in various ways provide a fascinating peek into foundation executive thinking and action. In particular, the perspective by Hodding Carter III provides a dose of reality and fortitude, in a vibrant writing style that's sure to entertain as well as inform. The first of two sections of chapters addresses foundations as a unique context for evaluation, with several forays into critical issues, including a history of foundations' use of evaluation, challenges in foundations' use of evaluation, foundation-grantee relationships, etc. The second set of chapters is more applied, including practical and non-technical coverage of making judgments about what to evaluate, adapting evaluation to foundations, evaluation for small foundations, evaluative thinking for grantees, appraising program effectiveness evidence, and communicating results to different audiences. All of these chapters should appeal to evaluators and evaluation users alike. Overall, the book is well edited, the writing is non-technical and quite accessible, and the range of topics is exciting. A book like this has been long overdue.
Book Description
In Called to Serve internationally respected CEO Max De Pree offers experienced advice on how to create a successful nonprofit board.
Now retired as chairman of the board of Herman Miller Inc., Max De Pree has been lauded by Forbes, Fortune, and The Wall Street Journal as one of the most sensitive and successful leaders in the business world. This experience comes through clearly as De Pree lays out the nuts and bolts of nonprofit organization and provides the direction necessary to establish and nurture a volunteer board.
Based on De Pree's many years of service on nonprofit boards, his work as a consultant in the field, and his work as a teacher who has already used this material successfully in numerous seminar settings, Called to Serve will benefit readers involved with any of the wide range of volunteer-based organizations, from boards of churches, hospitals, and libraries to boards of public works, foundations, and schools.
Customer Reviews:
a primer for working with volunteers.......2006-02-20
Called to Serve is recommended reading by all YMCA staff who work with policy making volunteers. It is designed as "letters to a friend" and covers the why, how and what in working with volunteers/boards in a conversational way. It is not overwhelming, nor does it get into a lot of governance issues. It leads you to understand the meaning and purpose of volunteerism and many, many lessons as to roles of volunteers, meeting development, strategic planning, effective committees, etc. I highly recommend it!
Powerful Insights In Concise Form.......2004-10-22
Truly an enjoyable, profitable read with many treasures for the one seeking advice on non-profit or volunteer boards.
This is packaged in letter form of author writing advice to a friend about such board memberhsip and leadership.
Just a few of the many gleans one will get: "the board does have obligations in the short term, but the future, with certain expectations, comes first"; "desigining an agenda by following the lines of a bell curve"; "one of the great time wasters for any group is the routine of giving progress reports when there's been no progress"; and the wonderful story of the postmaster who would not be bothered out of a meeting until he heard it was to receive thanks.
One reading this wants to be on any board that Max is on. Also, to invoke some of his wisdom tenderly yet passionately given in this work. Buy one for yourself and all members on your board. It will bring more joy to the member and more service to the organization.
A Primer for Non-Profit Boards.......2001-12-11
De Pree's latest addition to his leadership books such as best-selling Leadership is an Art, Leadership Jazz, and Leading without Power, has turned his vast experience with non-profit boards into a helpful volume about creating an effective volunteer board. The book covers generalities like the expectations of board and staff, as well as specifics like how to construct an agenda. De Pree gets as specific as stating, "The chairperson should not permit anyone to read to the board." Amen to that! The book can be read quickly, referenced easily, and would help create basic principles and expectations for the board. Anyone working with a volunteer board would do well to provide a copy for each board member.
Book Description
In Effective Philanthropy, Mary Ellen Capek and Molly Mead offer strategies for strengthening organizations through a commitment to diversity and gender equality. Capek and Mead's research shows that institutionalizing a more nuanced understanding of what they call "deep diversity" allows organizations to make full use of all the resources they have available, both inside and outside their doors. The authors show how foundations have used "differences that divide us" -- race, class, gender, sexual orientation, geography, age, religion, physical ability, and others -- to become learning organizations, a proven strategy for organizational effectiveness.
By virtue of their "power of the purse" and more subtle forms of influence, foundations are key players in US social, economic, and public policy and are increasingly influential internationally. When foundations function effectively, there is potential for tremendous public benefit, and Capek and Mead argue that goals for equity in philanthropy are similar to goals for any effective organization. Offering demographics, case studies, strategic funding initiatives, theoretical analyses, and original research, Effective Philanthropy describes models for building effective foundations that can be applied to all kinds of institutions -- large and small, public and private, national and regional, bureaucratic and entrepreneurial -- including colleges and universities, nonprofits, government agencies, and multinational corporations.
The diverse case studies and funding initiatives highlighted in the book include California Wellness, the Otto Bremer Foundation, the Philadelphia Foundation, the Ms. Foundation for Women's Collaborative Fund for Women's Economic Development, and programs for women and girls funded by the United Way of Massachusetts Bay.
Supported by the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and Women & Philanthropy.

Back to Basics.......2001-12-21
Kathleen Kelly takes an academic approach to the subject of fund raising and produces an easy to read guide for the fundamentals of raising money for nonprofit organizations. Kelly has designed a concise, organized approach to a subject that can often be dry. Yet, even in this text-book like style she brings the subject to life and gives the novice, the professional, the volunteer or the board fund raiser a foundation in which to navigate.
Founded in the history of fund raising and public relations, Effective Fund Raising Management provides both a context in which the history of fund raising is married to the process. This is a rare opportunity to find in one book so much information that is easily accessible and immediately useful.
I use this book as the basic text for any courses that I teach for fund raisers at the under graduate and graduate level. I recommend it extremely highly. A must read to understand the basics and put them into practice.
Book Description
A comprehensive checklist of ethical and effective nonprofit management and fund raising practice. Brief observations honed from 30 years of nonprofit experience are matched with illuminating and witty quotations from notable figures ffom current culture and hsitory. Norvell has provided a fun way to remind ourselves of how admirable organizations work and where others need work. The combination of humor and solid guidance is unique and informative.

Book Description
This book presents engineers with solutions to the problems found in control applications in the commercial HVAC buildings industry. Using their experience to take readers beyond textbook principles, the authors offer suggestions for troubleshooting not found in any other book. Divided into two sections, HVAC Controls and Systems covers all aspects of commercial controls, including pneumatic, electric, and electronic controls. The first section discusses the hardware of the controls industry: thermostats and humidistats, dampers and damper motors, automatic valves, transmitters, auxiliary devices, construction systems and devices, and electronic products. The second section covers applications of the hardware for air handling unit systems, terminal systems and units, primary systems, heat pump cycles, distribution systems, supervisory systems, maintenance and operations, and total facility approach.
Book Description
This short book explains hot water heating (hydronic) controls and circuits from the perspective of power suppy, switch, and load. The book starts with a simple control circuit and builds to multiple zone circuits. It explains that adding a control panel simplifies a job rather than making it more complex. The book then looks at various panels, building from an aquastat relay to multiple-zone and multiple-purpose panels.
Customer Reviews:
A little too basic.......2006-02-27
This book would make a good school book to show kids the basics of electrical circuits.
It unfortunately is based on obsolete technology for the hydronic controls and has no controls for heat pumps. It's based around boilers etc.
Excellent for the novice.......2005-05-18
I am a complete novice when it comes to hydronic controls. Basically, I'm an owner-builder who decided to install radiant heat. Since I know nothing about setting it up, I rely on elementary books and materials from the internet to gain knowledge.
Installing the PEX tubing in the slab was easy enough as was attaching the tubing to the underside of the second floor. I had intended to hire someone to finish the set-up but when finances became tight I decided to have a go at it.
I'm not done yet but this book has given me confidence to continue on.
way too simple.......2005-01-06
This book is far too basic. Almost all of the book is
about very simple electrical concepts; the "hydronic
controls" portions are only examples of these general
concepts. I was greatly disappointed with the book --
most manufacturer's web sites have much better and
more understandable descriptions.
This is a worthless book on Radiant Floor Heating.......2004-10-13
This book is totally worthless if you are hoping to understand and design the control systems for radiant floor heating. I wish I could get my money back. The book description by the publisher and the Editorial Reviews are misleading at best. I wish there had been a buyer review at the time I placed my order with Amazon--I would have passed on this book. Avoid.
Too basic to be of use.......2002-11-21
I was very disappointed in this book. It says right on the front cover that it's "A Contractor's easy guide to hydronic Controls, Wiring, and Wiring Diagrams". If a contractor needs to refer to this basic of information, I don't think I want them working in my house. I learned everthing in this book in High School. Don't waste your time unless you have no idea about how electricity works
Book Description
This book gives a very simple explanation of how a basic electrical circuit is made up of a power supply, a switch, and a load. It also explains how to troubleshoot a circuit, and how to use a meter. This book is especially for the HVAC contractor. It concentrates on low voltage circuits for heating and air conditioning controls.
Customer Reviews:
Do not buy this book.......2007-06-21
Complete waste of time for professionals - too simplistic with no real troubleshooting for most components
Electricity made so easy to comprehend!.......2006-07-17
This is THE book to own if you really know very little about electricity. You will be surprised at how much you learn after reading this easy-to-read and quick book. This book will not put you to sleep. I admired Carol Fey for making this excellent and very approachable book to electricity. Beginners will have a fun time with this book
Another waste.......2006-02-21
Every book I've found so far skirts the real issues in Heating & air conditioning. They discuss very little about problems actually encountered in the field, systematic troubleshooting, or forget electrical furnace systems. Electric systems must be a real taboo.
Practical IS good!!!.......2003-06-25
Carol Fey has a magical talent: she can take a complicated subject and condense it into 80 easy and fun to read pages. Although this is a short, mini-text, do not be fooled; it is not a kids book: novices to experts in the HVAC field will benefit. Ms. Fey has written 3 such books; all 3 in my opinion are must-reads. Each can be easily and completely read within 2 hours. I learned more from her than the 3 semester courses I took over the course of a year in HVAC!! Probably the only book I have ever read that I wished was actually longer!! Thanks Ms. Fey; PLEASE WRITE MORE TEXTS!!!

Book Description
No more useful reference for the designer or specifier of HVAC control systems exists than this complete "cookbook" of generic segments and sequences. This indispensable professional compendium gives you a broad array of diagrams that provides everything you need to design controls for an in-place or in-plan HVAC system; offers ready-to-go details for retrofitting, updating, or designing controls for altered systems; allows clear comparisons among commercial control systems; shows you frequently-made and useful modifications to controls; demonstrates how to create controls for peak efficiency, air quality, and energy conservation; covers air handling, terminal, and primary systems; offers sequences and segments for virtually any HVAC system need; and shows you how standard control algorithms work in particular systems. These highly useful control diagrams, many of them comparable to commercially available models, let you design or specify needed configurations in the most efficient manner possible. Written by a vastly experienced HVAC control engineer, in full compliance with ASHRAE standards, and covering both hardware and software applications, this unique volume fills a definite need. It fully deserves a place of honor within easy reach of every HVAC engineer's design desk.
Customer Reviews:
Title should be "Air Handling Diagrams.".......2002-01-20
The book is very informative having the most diagrams of air handlers and VAV boxes I have seen in one source. Diagrams are fairly thorough with the inclusion of heating and cooling coils and "some" additional control features. I was hoping for more detail on the piping of heating and cooling coils with various control valve confirgurations. It is still an excellent book if you want to compare air handling configurations.
Dave Herrington - HVAC Tech - University of Alaska-Fairbanks
Good.......1999-10-23
Only one thing I have to complain about is: all controls are pneumatic. With wide access to DDC controls today, I do not get it, why autor missed DDC systems. With DDC you can control HVAC equipment with greater precision and software is giving us so much flexibility.
