Hot Notes and Sample Questions.......2007-04-04
Prepare for your California Real Estate Exam by practicing with the sample questions in this book. The Hot Notes are helpful too.
Acceptable, I guess.......2007-02-25
Here's the deal scoop on this. Lots of repeated questions, at least one blatantly wrong answer, and some ambiguous questions that will make you feel stupid for not getting it when in fact it's just a stupid question. A lot of times the author gets lazy and will provide the following explanation as to why the answer is correct: "statement of fact". Gee that doesn't help too much.
I guess you can get this book if you like tough love, meaning, it MAY teach you by abusing you.
Not a book for you if you don't already know the material. Only get it if you need sample questions.
Not perfect but pretty darn good!.......2006-10-09
I agree with a little of what each person has written below. The Hot Notes are super helpful. Memorize them. The practice tests are VERY helpful. Do them! And there will probably be some of those questions on your real exam, because there were on mine.
That being said, some of the practice questions are worded vaguely or seem to contain conflicting info with the Real Estate Principles book (the basis for the CA exam). However, I tried using another book (How to Pass the CA Real Estate Exam and Dramatically Improve Your Score by Huber) and was almost in tears of relief when I realized I had also bought this book by Lush. The other book's exams were so convoluted and NOT related to the material, that it made me appreciate Lush's book all the more.
The only thing I will say is that the math section in this book is weak. The other book I just referred to had a really strong math section, which gave me confidence when taking the test. But, had I not used this (Minnie Lush's) book, I wouldn't have passed my exam on the first try.... which I did!!
Finally, about the exam, it's NOT easy. But it's NOT unreasonably difficult either. I knew the Principles book backwards and forwards, but there were still 11 questions on the test on material that I'd never heard of. But, since you can miss 45 questions and still pass, that's not a big deal. I worked steadily and did the math questions as they came up. On my scratch paper, I made a list of the Qs I wasn't sure about and/or didn't answer, then went back and looked at those when I had finished with all the questions. That way, I was able to gauge how many questions I had thought I'd answered correctly. All told, I was out of there in 2 hours' time. I give credit to knowing the Principles book really well (I read it twice and outlined it on my own) and having used this study book. I did self-study, no schools or seminars, so it CAN be done!
Harder than it needs to be.......2006-08-14
I passed the California Sales Exam on my first try using this book and the Learning Express Exam Guide. The sample tests in this book were so difficult that I only got over 70% on one of them. I was really worried. I read the Hot Tips twice but was concerned that I hadn't thoroughly memorized them. The most intimidating part was the math. Some of the answers were two paragraphs long and contained several steps. My other exam guide was so much easier that it confused me. I really didn't know what to expect. When I took the exam, I didn't encounter any math that was more than two to three steps. I think this guide is useful if you want to really challenge your brain. But, it seems much more complicated than the actual exam it's preparing you for. I also spent $47 on the California Real Estate Exam Guide Software disc by Minnie Lush (Dearborn) that has the same material. I would take a test in the book, read the answers, then take the same sample test again on disc.
The most important for me when taking the sales exam was to go through it once and answer everything I knew for sure. I saved all the math questions and did them at once. I went through the exam a second time and answered everything else. Don't leave any questions unanswered. Good luck!
Used it, Passed the exam. What more can I say?.......2004-09-19
Book is only good as the reader. If you find this book to be a waste of time and money, then so be it. Find another book. Good luck with your exam.
As for me, I used it along with 2 different exam guide books and found this one from Minnie Lush to be the most helpful. In fact, there were about 25 problems in the actual exam that were exactly the same as the ones I solved in this book. When you purchase this book, go through all 10 prep exams and memorize all the problems you answered WRONG. Those that you answered wrong will most likely to be in the actual exam. Actual exam is NOT a piece of cake. You actually have to work at it to pass it. Furthermore, HOT NOTES in the book are very helpful. Memorize them all.
Advice to all the examinees..... When taking the exam, don't worry about all the problems you are not sure about. Exam is set up so that you will lose confidence and even doubt yourself from the START. That's right... FROM THE START!!! Just remember this.. "Make sure to find 100 questions you can answer without any shred of doubt what so ever. As for the balance 45 problems, even if you choose "C" or "D" on all of them, you should at least get 10-15 of them right, which means you pass.
I hope this helps.

Customer Reviews:
Helped me pass the test the 1st time!.......2006-12-29
I thoroughly studied this book before taking the exam and passed the 1st time. This was the only study aid I used due to time constraints. Regarding the review from the lady that says that the book didn't give the questions EXACTLY, she probably found the test difficult because she blindly memorized the answers rather than learning the concepts behind them. A few questions on the test were identical, but if you know the concepts, you will pass the test with little difficulty.
Frustrating.......2006-10-17
Haven't taken the licensing exam yet, so I can't provide much insight into how helpful this book will be as to passing the test, but it has been a very frustrating read on several levels. Words are consistently misspelled ("principle" when they mean "principal"), words or whole phrases left out of questions so you have to guess at what is being asked, and even flat out wrong answers ("none of the above" when they meant "all of the above"). WORD TO EDITOR: next time you revise the book, have someone proofread it!
Didn't Prepare Me!.......2005-02-26
I THOUGHT this book was good until I went to take the California RE Exam three days ago in Los Angeles ... The tone and content of this prep book was only about 50% in alignment with the actual test -- I felt cheated and that this book was out of touch and did NOT adequately prepare me for the test.

Customer Reviews:
Not detailed enough for broker exam.......2007-05-29
It might be great for the salesperson exam, but it just doesn't have the detail for the brokers exam. I have to take the test again.
Do Not Expect to Pass the California Brokers Exam By Reading This Book Alone!.......2006-07-15
I just passed the California Brokers Examination on my first try. I am an attorney and have no real estate background and I do not have a real estate sales license. (In fact I hated Real Property in law school and avoid practicing in this area.) I read a few primer books including this one to see what would be on the exam. I read this Barron's book all the way through and answered all of the test questions. I the took the Real Estate Trainers Course in Santa Ana, on the advise of a girlfriend who is a broker and who took their course. They offer a crash courses in LA, Orange County and in Northern Cal. I took the course, read the big book they give you; did all of the exam questions (Over 1500); attended the crash course seminar twice and took the test. The courses and practice exams Real Estate Trainers gave, made the test easy.
When I took the Real Estate Trainer's Course I realized that this Barrons book is only good to lay out the general areas that are on the actual test. However, you can not use this book alone to the pass the test. The questions in this book are too easy and don't reflect how hard the questions actually are. You can use it for general information purposes only but some of the areas in the Barron's book overemphasis areas that the actual test spends little or no time on.
In that the pass rate for the exam is between 30 and 38%, I would prepare the best you can. Save your money and find this book in the local library and check it out. (Many libraries have it.) Read and take a brokers exam course.
Do Not Buy This Book.......2006-03-17
Like the previous reviewer I studied this book in detail, took all the exams which totaled over 1000 questions, scoring over 90% on each exam and still flunked the Broker's Exam. This after having passed the State Bar exam for attorneys on the first try. This book did not cover even 10% of what was on the exam. I emailed the authors and they never responded. This book is a complete piece of garbage. You cannot count on it for anything.
Basic Fundamentals, but not sufficient exam prep .......2006-02-14
The questions in the theoretical exams do not reflect what you will find on the actual test. If you use this book alone to prepare, there is a good chance you will fail the exam. In general, the questions will help you to grasp some fundamentals, but you will need to go over some more realistic test questions to prepare.
Not for the exam.......2005-12-20
I studied this book for my first broker's exam on December 14, 2005 at the Pasadena Center and failed. I solved and reviewed twice all the chapter problems and all of the exam sets in the book. I was very confident that I could answer correctly on all the questions in the book. But the questions on the actual exam were nothing like the ones in the book. The questions on the actual exam were much longer and harder. They required much deeper knowledge than what the book presented. It was like the authors never have seen the actual exam. This is a real estate knowledge book, not an exam prep book. I have wasted my time and money because of this book. What could an exam prep book do worse if a book not only does not help, but also misleads about the actual exam? Please do not buy this book to study for the exam. This is a shame on the famous name 'Barron's'. Do not be a victim like me. Hope my and my family's suffer would do some good by letting other people know not to buy this book.

Customer Reviews:
good practice, succinct.......2007-09-27
I am sorry that I didn't read this book before I took the exam this morning! I used a real estate course textbook and a book of 5 practice tests. Neither one fully prepared me for the exam questions that I saw today. However, this book was much more succinct than the ones I used. Also, some of the questions in this book are (as far as I can tell) worded exactly the same as the ones on the real test. In fact, I found two questions right away that were the same questions and the same answer choices! So do yourself a favor and use this book to prepare for the salesperson exam!

Fast and Easy Review.......2000-04-05
The information on the audio tape follows Minnie Lush's study guide almost verbatim, but the convenience of being able to listen to the material while cleaning the house or driving the car is wonderful. The tapes are packed with helpful information. Ms. Lush includes not only the necessary facts that will be covered on the exam, but informs the listener how to prepare and what to bring to the exam as well.

Taking the Cal Real Estate Exam? Look elsewhere........2004-05-05
If you are trying to study or cram for the California Real Estate Exam (Salesagent; not Broker's exam), DO NOT use this book as the main study material. Instead use this book only as a supplementary study guide. Look for "Final Exams"
by Thomas E. Felde. This is the best study material for helping with your R.E. exam. I used CALIFORNIA REAL ESTATE SALES EXAM
by Learning Express for about 1 month and for the last few weeks, I used "FINAL EXAMS; by Felde" and I passed. FINAL EXAMS; by Felde are past Cal R.E. exams broken up into 8 different exams. Those questions are way tougher than "CALIFORNIA REAL ESTATE SALES EXAMS" and they are what you'll see on your Cal. R.E. exam. I swear they had 10-15 questions repeated and identical to Felde's Final Exam. None of LEARNING EXPRESS's questions were on the Cal R.E. exam I took on April 17th 2004.
Good Math Section!.......2003-12-06
I am a bit surprised some rated this book so low.
I haven't taken the State Exam yet, but I have just finished a Real Estate Principles class at a local junior college.
There are four sample exams. I have found the questions in the book to be a little on the easy side compared to another exam preparation disc I acquired. But they are good review, and there is a middle section that is a mini-refresher course on real estate principles. I found the refresher quite helpful.
The best part, if you are math-challenged like myself, is the math review section. It lays out how to do math problems (even with a calculator) in as concise and clear a way as I have ever seen -- percentages, fractions -- assessment, appraisal, insurance, commission, etc. And it also has a "short cut" that I have never seen before but which works everytime. I am now confident that can do most of the math problems that will come up on the exam. A feeling I did not have before.
If you want to cover all bases exam-question-wise, it's probably best to have at least two sources of practice exam questions, this, and another book or disc.
But, for me, the math review section alone is worth the price.
The Best Book Ever!!!.......2003-07-19
This is the best book I have ever purchased from amazon.com. In fact, I'd say it is the best book I've ever read, hands down, even better than Tropic of Cancer. I bought it for my daughter Sandy, whose dream is to become a real estate agent, and she almost passed the exam. If only she had spelled her name right, she would be the best little real estate agent west of the Mississippi!
Don't waste your dollars.......2002-07-01
I didn't buy this book, not knowing the quality of the materials and saving ... Instead I borrowed from a public library. I spent innumerable hours studying and scoring 80% of the questions provided, including the useless CDROM. But I failed the exam. Some information is rather defunct and confusing. I personally don't recommend this title, and it needs to be taken off shelves.
Outdated!.......2002-05-26
I read the book, took the practice exams in the book and spent coutless hours with the CD. I was scoring over 90%. I took the State exam. Boy, was I suprised! Waste of time--except for the math. The math part was very helpful. It gives an easy way to set up your problems--and they were right! But, they need to update the questions. I failed the test. I retook the test after checking into some of the literature that a person gets after applying to take the State exam--and I passed. Checkout Chamberlin RE School, or Allied RE School (on
line). You will pass....
