Excellent resource.......2003-10-28
The authors of this book have provided excellent insights for educators, both at the administrative level and the classroom level, for dealing with parents. One of the key benefits to this text is that it provides clear and practical ideas as to how to prevent parents from being difficult to begin with.
Most educators are keenly aware of the critical nature that early communication plays in maintaining parental support for the school's role in their child's life. However, many, due to time constraints don't follow through and things wait until issues have become emotional. As a result, dealing with parents can be an unpleasant experience. Whitaker and Fiore show how with a calm nature, teachers and principals can defuse these situations. Some of the ideas require that the educator remain calm and not become emotional themselves, a difficult task to say the least, but not becoming emotional, as the authors point out, is one of the keys to being viewed as a professional.
In my opinion, no teacher education program should let their students get by without having read this book.
Practical.......2003-07-21
As a new principal, I wanted a book to give me more confidence in dealing with parent conflicts. This book teaches practical scenarios for commonly experienced parental conflicts that produce a win-win outcome. The scripted dialogues and tips in nerve-wracking situations are clear and adaptable.
A solidly recommended emotional & verbal self-defense manual.......2002-06-08
Dealing With Difficult Parents (And With Parents in Difficult Situations) by Todd Whitaker (Associate Professor of Educational Leadership, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana) and Douglas J. Fiore (Assistant Dean of the College of Education, State University of West Georgia) is a straightforward guide written especially for teachers, principals, and others who share a mandate to educate young minds. Individual chapters capably address how to deal with parents that prove difficult in any number of ways including abrasive personalities, hard to reach, excessive anger, and a host of other ill traits and situations. Dealing With Difficult Parents is a solidly recommended emotional and verbal self-defense manual for fostering the best possible learning environment.
HEADACHE RELIEF!.......2001-04-02
Do you find it challenging and frustrating to deal with the parent who is
- bossy?
- argumentative?
- apathetic?
- intimidating?
What's the best way to deliver bad news to parents?
Written for teachers, administrators, and other educators, this book will help you work with the most difficult parents in the most challenging situations. It shows you how to:
- avoid the "trigger" words which serve only to make bad situations worse
- use the right words and phrases to develop more positive relationships with parents
- deal with parents who accuse you of not being "fair"
- build positive relationships with even the most challenging parents
With vivid examples, this book will show you how to:
- handle a parent's complaint when the parent is right
- use body language to influence the way parents react to what you say
- make it easy to contact parents during the day to inform them when their children have done something worthy of praise (achieved a high grade, helped another student, etc.)
- increase parent involvement in their children's education both at school and at home
Dr. Todd Whitaker, a former middle and high school principal is currently Assoc. Prof. of Educ. Leadership at Indiana State University. He is the author of several best selling books. He has keynoted state, national, and international conferences and is a highly sought presenter for teachers and principals. Dr. Douglas J. Customer Reviews:
Great resource!.......2007-05-29
I am a [...]teacher in a school where many of the students are ESL learners. I came across this book when I was looking for a way to help my students develop their reading fluency. Let me just say, my class has LOVED acting out these plays! I only wish I had discovered it earlier in the year so that I could have more time to work with this book. I would highly recommend it.
Easy to use........2006-07-01
The scripts were fun to do for a drama class of 9- 12 year olds. Some were a little preachy about the point of the story, but the the kids laughed a lot.
Fun remakes of classic tales.......2005-08-24
I actually got this book for my kids so that we could read them together at night. It turned out that this book is actually written for use in a classroom. (I didn't realize that it was by Scholastic when I bought it.) Fortunately I am just 2 classes away from being a teacher, so I can get some use out of it. This book would probably not be too useful for families--unless you are the Von Trapps and all the cousins are visiting.
Read, Write, AND Have Fun?!.......2004-07-09
I find Cinderella Outgrows the Glass Slipper a valuable resource for ideas for helping students read and write for a variety of purposes, one of which is for enjoyment! Teachers are always looking for practical and intriguing ways to teach writing and build students'motivation to write, so the creative ideas for addressing national language arts standards and teaching writing for a variety of purposes found in this book are treasures.
Students and adults appreciate the zany fairy tales J.M. Wolf includes in this book, and the many practical resource ideas for presenting fairy tale plays really do work. The fractured fairy tales hook students' interest, and the related writing activities and resources are useful supplements to the language arts curriculum.

Book Description
Long before Politically Correct Bedtime Stories invaded bookstores, Americans were getting their giggles from Fractured Fairy Tales, those delightfully twisted parables brought to us between the cliffhanger adventures of our favorite cartoon heroes, Rocky & Bullwinkle. This collection, illustrated with classic art from the animated series includes the comical retelling of 25 classics such as Pinocchio (who starred in his own variety show "The Pinocchio Doody Show"), Jack and the Beanstalk (did you know that Jack grew a beanstalk in the outfield so he could catch fly balls for his baseball team?), or King Midas (who became a dentist so he could give his patients gold fillings). This satirical humor loved for so long by so many, is a must-have for fans of the show and anyone who loves classic fairy tales--with a twist.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Um, Haha........2006-02-03
Fractured Fairy Tales, by A.J. Jacobs, is a slightly offbeat, occasionally funny book of fairy tale parodies. I rate it three out of five stars because the tales are parodied, which makes the writing style inconsistent. Though the changes to the tales make them funnier, after a while they seem repetitive. These are the main reasons I dislike this book.
Though as a collection of stories, I dislike this book, a few of the remade tales are absolutely hilarious, like The Seven Chickens, where a prince finds seven chickens and must tell which chicken is a princess. Unfortunately, when he finds the princess he is disguised as a woman, and, well...you better find the rest out yourself. Another hilarious story is called Prince Hyacinth and the Dear Little Princess, in which there is a prince born with a nose like a casaba melon. He will always have his weird nose until he says, "I have a nose like a casaba melon". Also making an appearance is a fairy godmother...with a New York accent? Funny stories like these, along with some funny changes to the some of the stories salvage my overall rating of the book.
Great Parodies of well known Fairy Tales.......2005-12-23
I thought I've read every kinds of fairy tales rewrites out there, but boy I was wrong! I can't bring myself to put this book down after I started reading it. Unlike any usual "polite writing" of the fairy tales, I do not recommend parents to let their young children read it until they are teenagers or so, cause this book focus more on the comedy rather than focusing on the moral aspect of the original book.
A few parody stories from this book would be, the frog prince, Hansel & Gretel, The Golden Goose & Aladdin's lamp.
Prefectly fractured.......2005-04-05
If you enjoyed the cartoons on Bullwinkle or if you just have a flare for the zaney, you'll like it!
The Fairy Tale is Over Success Was Not Achieved Here.......2003-08-26
Retelling fairy tales we all grew up with is a sensational idea which has been done extremely well. Just not here! In other books yes, but here unfortunately no. The stories in this book do have one thing in common with the original motive of fairy tales. They will put you to sleep. These are some of the most boring low quality stories ever written. Also avoid the books A Wolf at the Door and Snow White Blood Red edited by Ellen Datlow as they are no better than this.
If you do want really good retelling of classic tales rewritten in sensational format buy Once Upon A Crime or Politically Correct Fairy Tales. You will find what you're after in those books.
Not Nostalgia - Exactly.......2001-04-27
No, it's not Edward Everett Horton. This is a derivative work of the original Jay Ward Version. If you liked the old - you should like these. They are hysterical and relayed with the same wit as the ones from the Rocky & Bullwinkle TV show; however, they are not those stories!!

Book Description
Fractured Frazzled Folk Fables and Fairy Farces, Part II is adult literature satirizing classic children's stories and the work is written in the spirit of its predecessor Fractured Frazzled Folk Fables and Fairy Farces. The new work FFFF&FF Part II features adult language, adult content and adult satirical humor.
Author Jay Dubya goes right to work corrupting familiar children's stories The Three Scruffy Gruffy Billy Goats, The Gay Tailor Who Became King, Petey Rabbit, Thumbilisa Thumbilina, The Emperor's Invisible Clothes and Goldie Lox and the Three Ursas. Several British legends are re-invented with hilarious adult renditions of St. George Slays the Dragon and Arthur Becomes King of England. Greek myths are imaginatively sabotaged with comical presentations of Daphne's Daft Daffiness, Bellerophon's Marathon Adventure, Baucis and Philemon, Psyche and Stupid Cupid and Atalantas's Last Race.
Other popular children's stories that are put into adult parodies are Pinocchio's Personality Problem, The Wolf and the Seven Lame Lambs, The Sorcerer's Un-resourceful Apprentice and Peter Pansy Does Kensington Gardens. Finally Author Jay Dubya presents very amusing renditions of the classic tales Alice Visits Wonderland and Aladdin's Little Lamp. Fractured Frazzled Folk Fables and Fairy Farces, Part II is definitely not written for or to be read by children.
