Book Description

Despite the potentially enormous cost to organizations from clunky Web sites, Web testing is often an overlooked aspect of the development process. Expert tester Diane Stottlemeyer provides developers with all the tools and templates they need to put a testing plan into motion. Focusing exclusively on testing in a Web environment, Stottlemeyer explains how to build and perform full-functionality Web testing, including code enhancement for adding features to existing applications and regression testing. Readers will get complete, step-by-step guidance on preparing, running, and analyzing tests on the Web, including how to test with different languages and databases, and how to test on different platforms and servers, including Linux.

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I've ever read!!.......2004-06-01

The book is not organized at all. Headings and sub-headings are not structured either so you can't understand what are you reading exactly. Examples are rarely introduced and it is very easy to lose focus while reading. I don't recommend this book at all and indeed it needs a quick major revision.

1 out of 5 stars obsolete and dangerously misleading.......2003-09-06

I tried real hard to find something to like about this book. I was disappointed. Testing of web sites and web applications is an area which desperately needs some good books, but this is not one of them.

The author seems to have cobbled this book together from some old course notes, inserted the word "web" here and there and put some obviously obsolete material in the past tense. It baldly assumes a heavyweight and ill-considered development process, and makes unsubstantiated statements about an unrepresentative selection of software packages. Automated testing is mentioned only in passing, between superficial descriptions of project- and risk- management. Virtually no mention is made of the things which make web applications hard to test - browser differences, massive concurrency, stateless protocols, network issues ...

It lacks the depth for a developer or tester, but I can't even recommend this book as a management overview - so much of the content is either dangerously misleading, obsolete, or just plain wrong.

1 out of 5 stars Should be named "NOT Automated Web Testing".......2003-01-17

Very misleading title. I bought the book thinking it would discuss tools for automated web testing (gee, I got that idea from the title somehow); but the book is only about basic procedures in general testing. "Testing Computer Software" and "Testing Web Applications" by Cem Kaner, et al. had better information on basic testing procedures AND automated testing. I really wanted the authors to give me my money back since the book is NOT about test automation. And the "load testing for e-confidence" pdf on the CD is available FREE OF CHARGE from Segue's web site.

5 out of 5 stars Great *basic* resource.......2001-09-11

This book gives a viable testing process and some excellent artifacts that will get new test engineers and QA specialists quickly up-to-speed.

Although the title claims that this book is an *automated* web testing toolkit, there is little test automation coverage. However, getting past the title, this book does lay an excellent foundation for testing processes and procedures. The artifacts on the CD ROM add to the value, and although more experienced software test and QA personnel might find this book basic, I think that it does an excellent job.

Among the things I like most include the system independent approach that the author takes - UNIX and Microsoft technologies are given equal and unbiased treatment, and the tools that the author does use as examples reflect her objectivity.

While some may lament the fact that this book is basic, I believe that the "basics" are sorely needed in the web environment because the testing that I have observed isn't rigorous if it's done at all. From that perspective, this book may be basic, but it introduces web development and support teams to a methodical approach to testing and its importance.

As long as you know the strengths and weaknesses of this book you can make an informed purchasing decision. If you are an advanced QA practitioner, or are seeking information on automated web testing this book will probably disappoint you. However, if you are feeling the pain of poor web QA (defects routinely caught after code or content is released), or need to learn the basics of web testing, then you might find this book to be a valuable resource. In my opinion the artifacts on the CD ROM alone are worth many times the price of the book. Your opinion may differ. This book merits five stars for the right audience.

4 out of 5 stars Title Is Deceiving.......2001-08-29

This book is a good addition to any manager's library. It goes through the steps it takes to go through a web project. It is a good toolkit since it gives the reader a list of tools for many types of web testing.
It also talks about Business Requirements and types of testing that can be done on web applications.
As a novice tester the book may not answer all your questions but for testers who are looking for quick answers and want to reserach tools this is a must buy.
The CD also offers several templates for the Test Process that I found useful.

Book Description

With the collapse of high-profile companies such as Enron and Tyco, worldwide anti-globalization protests, and recent revelations of questionable behavior by financial groups and auditors, corporate behavior has become the highest priority topic for businesspeople, investors, politicians and the public. Yet despite the critical importance of maintaining public and shareholder trust, most corporations make very little formal effort to actively manage the activities that can put their reputation, share price, and customer base at risk. Most corporations officially embrace the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility; but giving money away to local communities or worthy causes will not prevent an ethical disaster.

The problem is not social irresponsibility; the problem is a lack of knowledge about what is taking place in the company or at its subcontractor sites. What companies need to be thinking about is not a theoretical construct around Corporate Social Responsibility, or how they can spin public opinion by charitable actions. They need to be thinking about how they can create a practical knowledge and risk management framework in their company that allows them to avoid costly and reputation-damaging behavior in the first place.

Ultimately, this comes down to knowledge management. Whether violations of human rights, employment law, or environmental standards - or simply accounting shenanigans - invariably the reason that these activities are not anticipated and avoided is simply that executives and board members do not realize what is happening in the organization, and what the likely implications of actions will be. And the larger the organization, the more extensive that lack of knowledge.

The good news is that developing a strategic approach to corporate integrity is neither exceptionally expensive nor particularly difficult. The problem is that companies that are already using sophisticated information technology and knowledge management tools for gathering internal and external information have focused those systems and practices almost exclusively on operational issues and increasing productivity. But these same knowledge management techniques - built around emerging ethical guidelines being developed by international standards groups - can be used by companies to create an effective global policy for building and maintaining corporate integrity. This means applying knowledge management techniques in three important areas:
* First, they need to mobilize key employee knowledge and the vast amount of information available on potentially sensitive issues in a way that allows key decision-makers to "sense and respond" quickly and correctly to developing risks.
* Second, it means creating objective, scenario-based guidelines for ethical behavior, communicating those guidelines using knowledge management techniques among key organizational leaders, and providing a workable system of incentives for managers to surface potentially dangerous issues.
* Third, companies need to adopt emerging guidelines such as AA1000 that provide for ethical procedures and performance indicators that enable companies to audit and monitor their own behavior, and also to provide shareholders and the buying public with an objective report on the company's ethical performance. Much like ISO 9000, Six Sigma and other performance and productivity and practice standards of the 1990s, these new global ethics standards will inevitably become a baseline by which investors and customers judge a company's potential for future growth and stability. High marks on auditable ethical performance set against these guidelines will become an important way for companies to differentiate themselves from their competition in the future.

Developing a workable program for corporate ethics will be one of the most important issues of this decade, and will be "the next big thing" for large organizations. A drive toward standardized reporting of corporate ethics practices was coming anyway; the recent public corporate disasters will only encourage corporate executive teams to scramble to demonstrate to customers and shareholders that their organization takes these issues seriously.

This book, therefore, will be a primer for business people and business students worldwide who will shortly be tasked with devising or participating in those types of corporate integrity initiatives, and will explain how knowledge management is indispensable as a tool for helping corporations to manage their risk and integrity policies. Through a mixture of leading practice case studies and a clear framework, it will show how a corporation can begin to combine leading practices in risk and knowledge management with emerging international guidelines in order to develop and manage a program of corporate integrity.

* The first book to show how knowledge management and corporate integrity intersect
* Shows executives how to develop a strategic approach to corporate integrity in this post-Enron age
* Neef, an expert on knowledge management, explains how a company can re-engineer existing knowledge management systems to build and maintain an effective corporate integrity program

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and useful.......2006-02-09

A holistic approach to managing the risks associated with failures in corporate ethics and consequent damage to corporate reputation. The book sketches the changing risk landscape (in the light of recent scandals, globalization, and the steadily increasing activity of stakeholder interest groups), identifies major sources of risk and offers a detailed program based on three main elements:
* a corporate ethics framework and associated action to make it real;
* an integrated approach to knowledge management designed to ensure that current and accurate information is available to all who need it; and
* an external program of accurate reporting against international standards.
Even those who have already given close attention to these issues will find this book a valuable practical guide.

    Book Description

Software development is a complex problem-solving activity with a high level of uncertainty. There are many technical challenges concerning scheduling, cost estimation, reliability, performance, etc, which are further aggravated by weaknesses such as changing requirements, team dynamics, and high staff turnover. Thus the management of knowledge and experience is a key means of systematic software development and process improvement. "Managing Software Engineering Knowledge" illustrates several theoretical examples of this vision and solutions applied to industrial practice. It is structured in four parts addressing the motives for knowledge management, the concepts and models used in knowledge management for software engineering, their application to software engineering, and practical guidelines for managing software engineering knowledge.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art and best practice in knowledge management applied to software engineering. While researchers and graduate students will benefit from the interdisciplinary approach leading to basic frameworks and methodologies, professional software developers and project managers will also profit from industrial experience reports and practical guidelines.

      Book Description

This book presents the concepts and terminology of cognitive patterns and cognitive modeling. It thoroughly explains the uniqueness of cognitive patterns as an approach in modeling business systems and processes. The authors introduce KADS Object (a nonproprietary set of cognitive patterns) as a special framework for enabling object-oriented (OO) analysis and design. The use of KADS Object in concert with any OO methodology leads to the creation of robust, understandable, and testable OO models and systems. The book is organized into three major sections. The first section introduces the concepts of cognitive modeling and KADS. The second section examines the specific mappings from the KADS Object model components to OO design elements. The final section discusses cognitive patterns for typical OO development life-cycle activities. This book will appeal to the OO practitioners who are interested in the modeling and development of large-scale and complex OO systems, those interested in modeling business processes as collaborating objects, and Information Technology (IT) professionals interested in knowledge management.

4 out of 5 stars Practical and theoretical insight into a complex problem.......2001-01-31

This book introduces a method for explaining and comprehending complex IT systems--a critical part of building scalable and flexible systems that meet business goals. Start by using ethnographic interviewing techniques to identify priorities and context for the process that the system supports. Use task analysis and more interviewing to identify what people do with the system, the information they need and use, and what they do with that information. Map this to a known library of established "problem-solving patterns" or "templates" that have been identified as part of artificial intelligence research. Review, test, and refine the pattern. Map this "cognitive pattern" to the current or planned function of the system and you have developed a system for understanding, communicating, and modeling the system in terms that can be comprehended and tested by humans. This process resolves many of the problems with traditional modeling techniques that result in documentation and models created with varying levels of abstraction and detail and leave both systems architects and business modelers struggling to figure out how it all fits together. The process is far too complex to detail thoroughly in this small book, but it does an admirable job of outlining the entire process, and how it can be applied to meet a number of system and business modeling goals. It also identifies numerous information resources to take you to the next step. Readers should note that the first chapter contains some of the worst examples of gratuitous and useless artwork I've ever seen, and has many long academic sentences that are likely to make many people stop reading right there. But keep going...This book is definitely worth the read.

This is a HUMAN RESOURCES RESEARCH ORGANIZATION ALEXANDRIA VA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A024093. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This report describes the conduct and results of a project to examine assessment and management of user-produced training support packages (TSPs) for collective training exercises in live, virtual, constructive, and combined training environments for combat arms organizations at brigade and below at present and for the next five years. "User-produced" refers to TSPs that are developed by unit commanders and other unit trainers as well as institutional trainers who will be directly involved with executing the exercises they produce. The major research activities consisted of: data collection, data analysis, and development of products to fulfill the project objectives. A major focus of data collection was coordinating with the ongoing development of the Army Training Information Architecture which will establish a framework within which the products of the current project will fit. The project produced the following: a process for identifying core set exercises for combat arms units; the list of components and elements of a TSP for collective training exercises identified to a level sufficient to develop database specifications for them; recommendations for TSP assessment, approval, and distribution; and an identification of six types of users of TSPs along with their roles in exercise execution.

This book provides an excellent preparation for the Illinois Real Estate Salesperson's Exam. The text is easy to follow and has break out "In Illinois" sections that give state-specific information. Each chapter has a quiz at the end and list of key words at the beginning. These are supplemented by two sample examinations and a comprehensive glossary. The sample exams are very similar to the ones provided by the testing company that administers the licensing exam. The graphics in the illustrations look dated, but are clear and easy to follow. One downside is photocopied list of corrections that comes with the book. It is very inconvenient to have to carry these around and refer back to them.
