Because of a shocking ending to the first Sin City book, many people wondered how successful Frank Miller could be with future tales of his no-holds-barred city noir. Enter Dwight McCarthy, a clean-living photographer who tries to avoid trouble because he knows what he's capable of. His tactics don't do him much good when a girl from his past (who he can't say no to) shows up and professes her love for him. When he finds out she's in way over her head, it looks as though trouble has found him. What's going to happen? You guessed it: people get hurt.

Book Description

It's one of those hot nights, dry and windless. The kind that makes people do sweaty, secret things. Dwight's thinking of all the ways he's screwed up and what he'd give for one clear chance to wipe the slate clean, to dig his way out of the numb gray hell that is his life. And he'd give anything. Just to cut loose. Just to feel the fire. One more time. And then Ava calls.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Dodgy, deadly dames and manly male meatheads. Well, Dwight is not as dumb as all that, but he pretty much falls hook, line and sinker for the old slinking femme fatale routine. Those damned pheromones and all.

All is not as it seems, except for the hulking psycho bodyguard type. He is exactly what he seems.

5 out of 5 stars "There's a word for what I am.".......2007-07-23

There is a word for people like Ava Lord. Evil. I have read my share of crime noir, including Dashiell Hammett and Jean-Patrick Manchette, and can say that nothing by those writers comes close to the epitome of femme fatale like Ava. Destroying some men for money, others simply for fun, she is a Jungian archetype in graphic representation. She makes A DAME TO KILL FOR, in my opinion, one of the best books in the Sin City series.

She is also both the dream and the nightmare of Dwight McCarthy. Ava enters his life once again and, despite his better judgment, Dwight finds that he cannot resist her charms. Of course, just as he suspects, it is all a ruse. He is being used like any other man unfortunate enough to catch Ava's attention and winds up suckered into killing an innocent man.

This time, however, Dwight realizes enough is enough. With the help of Marv, the anti-hero of THE HARD GOODBYE, he decides to put an end to the one-woman wrecking ball's game. It is not an easy or pretty task, complicated all the more by Manute, a ruthless giant absolutely loyal to Ava. But the results are enough to maintain the reader's interest until the end. If one only wanted to sample the best of Sin City, A DAME TO KILL FOR would make the short list.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites........2007-07-19

Once again Frank Miller's Sin City is fueled with bloody violence and dialogue that gives you goose bumps. Book 2 of 7, A Dame To Kill For is a tale of love and revenge. Miller's way of telling these dark noir stories is priceless. Be sure to check out the other graphic novels as well, and the movie too. I hope you enjoy this book!

3 out of 5 stars It's no... Big Fat Kill..........2007-01-03

For a graphic novel that has more artwork than words, it actually took me a while to read it. I tried reading a chapter a night, so it wouldn't be over like that. Overall the story is ok if all you are interested is in background information on the character of Dwight. And if anyone is a fan of the novels because of the movie, The story of Dwight will make some more sense after this is read. And know that this story in intertwined with the Marv story.

5 out of 5 stars A Graphic Novel to Kill For.......2006-08-03

Light up a weird Russian cigarette and let this tale in Frank Miller's Sin City consume you. Bring out the beast. As far as graphic novels goes, this is one of the best. And most likely the best in the Sin City epic. Starring Dwight McCarthy (before he got that new face) as the self-restraining photographer stumbles onto an attempted murder between a police officer and an escort of Old Town. Then the hopeless romantic receives word that another woman needs his help. Problem is, Eva is no one he wants to help. As what may often happen to every hopeless romantic, Dwight's will is corrupted by an ex-lover.

What I love about Dwight is that he is the hopeless romantic in Sin City. While many of the sinful characters are motivated by women, Dwight McCarthy is instead tricked by a woman. Eva's plead for mercy is not exactly in black and white and this victim is not necessarily helpless. This is probably one of the most complex volumes of Sin City and that's what makes it so great. So inhale the fumes and let your wild fancy run free when reading this devilish tale of Sin City

4 out of 5 stars The story of how Dwight ended up with a new mug in Sin City.......2005-05-19

"A Dame to Kill For," which is Book 2 in Frank Miller's "Sin City" series, is now going to be known as the only one of the first four books that was not part of the "Sin City" movie. Given the options it was a smart move because this one tells the story of what happened that made Dwight get a new mug and "The Big Fat Kill" is the better tale of the two if you are going to do one Dwight story and if you want to do a story in two parts "That Yellow Bastard" is a better choice as well.

Dwight is reduced by circumstances, most notably an attempt to stay sober, to spying on men cheating on their wives with prostitutes so that he can take their photographs. What he desperately wants is one clear chance to wipe the slate clean and get his life together. Four years earlier Ava left Dwight for another man and he knows that seeing her again is nothing but bad news above the fold even without the banner headline. He should just kill her or at least walk away, but when she begs him for help none of the cold harsh realities of what she has done and what sort of woman she really is matters to Dwight. He is going to need all the help he can get to deal with Ava, because being sober is not making Dwight smart enough to avoid making one big mistake.

In terms of the "Sin City" chronology, "A Dame to Kill For" comes before "The Hard Goodbye." We know because Marv is not only in the bar where Nancy is dancing as Dwight comes by for a visit, he helps his pal out when the hero of this story finds the man mountain named Manute to be insurmountable. This ends up working against this story in a couple of ways. You had to agree that it is hard to think of Marv as just a sidekick given how strong of a character that he is, and the fact that Dwight cannot handle Manute makes him a lesser hero. After all, it is Marv who labels Ava with the titular appellation. I knew that he was going to get his act together in the end, given what happens in the next book, but for most of this one Dwight is getting beat up, thrown through a window, and shot a whole bunch of times. Clearly Miller is making a point about the healing power of a burning desire for revenge

Overall, the black & white artwork (or, I should say, white on black artwork) is less experimental in Book 2 and if anything looks like it was drawn with white ink on black paper rather than the other way around. For me the sequence that stands out is in Chapter 2 when Dwight heads to a bar to meet with Ava and all of the panels have smoke drifting through them, although some of Miller's panels where the blinds on the windows make for alternative parallel lines of light and darkness are interesting (there are others that are just overkill). For the most part Miller is laying out the story so that it looks more like a conventional comic book than Book 1, so there is not the sense of boldness from before. But then the story is less ambitious as Dwight comes across as just another guy who made the mistake of thinking with some other part of his anatomy besides what is between his ears.

In 1995 "A Dame to Kill For" won Will Eisner's Best Limited Series Award so it is not like it is a book to skip. If you make it to Book 2 in the "Sin City" series you should be in for the long haul and more of those hot nights, dry and windless, that are the kind that make people do sweaty, secret things.

    Book Description

Prior to the kidnapping of several school administrators and the desecration of headstones in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, the University of Notre Dame's biggest worry had seemed to be this season's challenging football schedule. But these "pranks" are getting more and more serious. Then, Orion Plant, an eccentric scholar in the history program, began attracting negative media attention by claiming the university founder, Father Edward Sorin, stole the land on which the school sits from Native Americans. All in all, it's more than the board of trustees can handle.

A potentially costly lawsuit, embarrassing publicity, and a scandalous half-time prank broadcast on national television, cause university chancellor Father Bloom to turn to detective Philip Knight and his brother, brilliant philosophy professor Roger Knight, for help. But just as the brothers dig into the investigation, the scholar turns up dead, an Indian headdress wrapped around his bloody head. The South Bend police department is stumped, leaving the Knights once again to bring the killer to justice.

Another cleverly constructed and witty installment from one of the genre's masters, The Book of Kills is a delightfully sinister stroll through the hallowed halls of academia.

    3 out of 5 stars Solid Mystery.......2000-09-14

Ralph McInerny writes good mystery. Notre Dame fans in particular will enjoy this story set on the campus. It shows a delightful understanding of the way major Universities work and the life of the average graduate student. I was not completely comfortable with McInerny's portrayal of women, all of whom seemed willing to do just about anything to get their man. Overall, I enjoyed this mystery and found it very pleasant reading.

    3 out of 5 stars So-so.......2000-08-19

Several incidents on campus have worried the University of Notre Dame administration. Three gravestones at Cedar Grove cemetery were knocked over by vandals. Native Americans disrupt a wedding ceremony at the log chapel. The Blue Cloud Nation kidnaps Chancellor Father Bloom claiming that the university illegally stole the land from their ancestors. At half-time of the nationally televised game with Florida State, a young man parades on the field dressed as a Native American claiming the land belongs to the Blue Cloud Nation. Administration advisor Noonen and Father Anselm are abducted. No one has been hurt yet.

The University turns to insiders Roger and Philip Knight, who have done discrete investigations before. Roger begins making inquiries that leads him to former graduate student Orion Plant, who obsessively feels the land belongs to Native Americans. He has engaged a lawyer to represent him and the Native Americans. Meanwhile Roger and Philip continue with their inquiries trying to find evidence to shut up Orion. Though the "pranks" are dangerous, the ante is dramatically raised when murder occurs.

THE BOOK OF KILLS is an intriguing academic mystery focusing on who owns land that has been questionably taken from ancestors. The story line moves quickly forward as incidents keep occurring. The siblings are wonderful charcaters, though Roger and his golf cart are more prominent. The support cast provides a feel to the university. Though a murder simplifies much of the plot, perhaps too much, Ralph McInerny's fourth Notre Dame novel will attain high rankings in the polls.

Frank Miller has produced a pulse-pounding, blood-soaked, glass-shattering crime story about a thug who gets drawn back into the thick of things when an ex-lover returns with a sorry tale of "I never should have left you, and now I'm afraid that I may be killed." He should walk away probably, but that's not how things go in Sin City, where the weak get beat to hell and the strong . . . well, they get beat to hell, too. Miller's style results in some of the most impressive black-and-white art you'll see.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A violent, brutal, story, but somehow it is good. A cannibal bishop and his superfreak protege enjoy a lot of female long pig. One night, they kill the wrong girl, set up a hulking thug named Marv to take the fall. They mess up, fail to get him. He likes the girl they killed, a lot. Maximum carnage ensues.

            5 out of 5 stars "Here's a sign.".......2007-07-23

Frank Miller starts his Sin City series off with a bang. Marv is probably the best anti-hero since Dirty Harry. His sense of justice is rough and his means of enforcing it is rougher. And watching it play out makes THE HARD GOODBYE an excellent introduction to these books.

Marv is not the most introspective man around. He is as psychologically troubled in his everyday life as he is psychologically untroubled by his use of violence to help and avenge those he deems to be worthy of such. In THE HARD GOODBYE, he focuses his attention on Goldie, the only woman to ever show him the slightest bit of solace. After she winds up dead, Marv has no other purpose but to find and kill those responsible. Woe to those who get in the way.

Though not the sharpest crayon in the box, Marv nonetheless shows more smarts than many would give him credit for. His ensnaring of Kevin, a truly scary character, demonstrates an ability to plan things out in detail when necessary to accomplish his goals. If Marv lacks subtlety, it is most likely because, well, he does not need it.

THE HARD GOODBYE sets the tone for the rest of the Sin City catalog. The action and characters are usually as black and white as the art. The characters are often archetypes and it is to Frank Miller's credit that they do not become stereotypical. It may not be the most intellectual of reading, but for those times you just want the action, these books fit the bill.

5 out of 5 stars A classic in the comic medium........2007-07-19

No comic book series has ever went outside the lines as much as Frank Miller's Sin City. Book 1 of 7, The Hard Goodbye is a tale of love lost and revenge. Featuring hardcore violence and gritty dialogue, this story is as dark as they come. If you like noir, this will become your paradise. Be sure to check out the other graphic novels as well, and the movie too. I hope you enjoy this book!

1 out of 5 stars excessively violent; should be banned; utter tripe.......2007-05-24

I usually hate the idea of censorship, but this is one work that should definitely be banned. It contributes nothing and is filled with mindless violence. If you enjoyed this book, then there is something wrong with you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Little Companion.......2006-04-23

This book is a tasty buffet of enlightened eastern wisdom. The quotes and passages will inspire your life and give you ancient wisdom to utilize in your daily journey. Definitely recommended to read and reread.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully illustrated, and written.......2004-06-08

This collection of words includes not only great quotes from good men but a whole collection of pictures behind to draw you into your meditation.

At the same time, I would encourage those who have participated in other religions to look into this book. It puzzles me why Catholics and Christians must keep attacking Buddhism and eastern religious. Indeed they fear even body positions not deemed "worthy of God."

In this slim volume, Taro Gold has packed full information into a window into the soul. You won't be missing anything. At the same time, I have read most of the quotes you have been listening to for many years, and find them very puzzling and bizarre. They do not seem to mimic the exact translations of Buddhist wisdom or thought, but rather the English translations of them, beautiful, yet profound.

Perhaps that's what I like about Buddhism, and eastern religion. Though some of his quotes may be misinterpreted, they are not without character, or mind. The Tao has been treated to one hell of a lot of interpretation here, totally changing the words Lao Tzu said in some cases. But otherwise, it seems to be a perfect translation of the mind of Lao Tzu, and that's good enough to keep you thinking.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2004-05-06

              This is a great book!

              5 out of 5 stars I take it along.......2004-02-14

I bring this book with me wherever I go, in my car or in my purse. I have an extra copy in my desk at work. I love it so so much -- makes me feel a lot better just to read one thought from it or one page from it now and then in the day. My husband keeps a copy by the bed to read us a thought before we get up each morning which often makes for great conversations.

              5 out of 5 stars Pure inspiration.......2004-02-06

"Genuine happiness, or enlightenment, is already within us; we have only to reveal it. As spring water rushes through open earth, so happiness flows through open lives." - Taro Gold
In just a few words of a good quote, you see the big picture or universal truth. This is a collection of Eastern Wisdom and contains quotes by Buddhist and Eastern thinkers such as Nichiren, Lao Tzu, Confucius, and Mahatma Gandhi.

Taro Gold sees these quotes as "guideposts." He believes in having an open mind and in illuminating your life's path with wisdom from great thinkers.

              Taro also includes:

The Buddhist concept of the Ten Worlds
              Short Allegories
Short Biographical paragraphs of Historical Figures quoted in this book
              Longer passages for reflection
              Common Sense Quotes
              Universal Truths
              Eastern Wisdom

An Iris represents Faith, Hope, Wisdom and Valor. Not only is the cover beautiful and filled with this flower, the entire books is beautifully illustrated in an ornate fashion. Almost every page has a beautiful border and then the quotes are in black ink and easy to read on cream-colored paper.

I've been contemplating the reality of how we become what we think. Lately I've been watching how my own thoughts change my behavior.

Taro Gold has included a wonderful quote from Mahatma Gandhi about this:

"Keep your thoughts positive, because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive, because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive, because your behavior becomes your habits. Keep your habits positive because your habits become your values. Keep your values positive, because your values become your destiny."

This beautiful book will have me contemplating "thoughts" for a long time! An enjoyable collection of quotes to reflect on in moments when you want to think more deeply about life and your own journey to lasting happiness.

A book you will love adding to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide to Golden Wisdom!.......2003-12-03

This book is a wonderful collection of ideas and thoughts which can guide one on life's journey. It seems to gently remove the word "enigma" from life as it profoundly teaches with simplicity and depth.

Each thought is incredibly powerful mainly because this collection touches and challenges not only one's mind, but it also reaches the heart and the spirit.

It seems that westerners have difficulty in knowing how to live life, and the eastern philosophers just have the innate ability to do so. We are too focused on analysis and we are not very action oriented, while they offer the path and emphasize the action. Knowledge without action is really useless.

If you want to recapture the magical warmth and joy of discovery, and smile as you ponder these words of wisdom, buy this book. It's inspiring, and well worth it's small price!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome little book.......2003-09-20

This is by far the best little book of wisdom I've ever found. Packed with hundreds of uplifting thoughts and advice, I keep copies of it around to give away as well as to read from every day.

              5 out of 5 stars A Favorite.......2003-08-03

This has become pretty much one of my favorite books. Open Your Mind, Open Your Life contains clearly written thoughts that are simple yet immediately strike a deep chord. The statements are common sense yet inspiring and profound, beginning with the very first sentence. The thoughts are encouraging and helped me to realize I don't have control over certain things and to let got of them.

I liked it so much that I have recommended it to about five of my friends and they in turn have recommended it to others and given the book as a gift. Because this mini version was so wonderful I also recently bought the larger version, which I have yet to read.

5 out of 5 stars brings peace to my heart.......2003-06-27

I am a 48 year old mother, wife, daughter, secretary, etc....., who was losing touch with reality, close to losing my mind !
Buying this little book has saved me. I carry it in my purse and read it over and over, while waiting in line, waiting on teens, sometimes just during a break, and almost always in the morning. In the mornings I read until I feel at peace and ready to take on the world, again. Thank you Taro Gold for your book.
