Someone once said that more books have been written about Abraham Lincoln than any other person in history save Jesus and Shakespeare. Indeed, it is impossible to understand the Civil War without getting to know the complex figure of the 16th president. More than any other biographer, Stephen B. Oates brings the plain-talking man from Illinois to life as a canny politician, a doting husband, and a determined wartime leader. Oates has an appealing appreciation for Lincoln's majestic control of the English language, his raw humor, and his undeniable heroism. The final pages, covering Lincoln's death and his legacy, are graceful and moving.

Book Description

A masterful biography of Lincoln that follows his bitter struggle with poverty, his self-made success in business and law, his early disappointing political career, and his leadership as President during one of America's most tumultuous periods.

4 out of 5 stars A luxurious reading experience.......2007-09-13

This book generated controversy among Lincoln scholars. The general reading public, however, will probably enjoy both the book's prose and its story. Regardless of whether there is much, or anything, new in the volume, its account of Lincoln is told with flair. Points that disturbed some Lincoln scholars will probably not be noticed by general readers. I read the book before I knew about the dispute, and found the volume enchanting.

5 out of 5 stars Best Lincoln Biography.......2007-08-24

Consider the great biographies of Lincoln: Nicolay and Hay,[10 volumes] his secretaries, Carl Sandburg's Abraham Licoln [6 volumes], Benjamin's single volume and all those that preceed and follow this, you must conclude this is the best single volume biography of Abraham Lincoln, indeeed the best general biography of the President and the man. The closest rival is Carwardine's Lincoln which deals in depth in one aspect of his life. WITH MALICE TOWARD NONE IS THE BEST INTRODUCTION TO THAT COMPLEX MAN AND HIS TIME AND ACHEIVEMENTS THAT WE HAVE TO DATE.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Biographies I have read.......2007-02-06

Professor Oates in my opinion did an outstanding job in the biography he did on Lincoln. While it is not as verbose as Donald's, it was well written and to be honest I could not set the book down. For anyone who does not have the time to read a larger volumn on Lincoln I suggest Oates. If you have time then I suggest you read both and also read "Team of Rivals. They are all outstanding volumns. This biography though is articulate, a good length and at times you can see the great passions in Lincoln the boy from Kentucky, the youth in Illnois and the 16 President of the United States. I give it a 5 stars a must read for any history student and I think a must for every American.

4 out of 5 stars A great biography of Abraham Lincoln.......2007-01-23

In this work, Oates succeeds in illuminating the political and personal life of Abraham Lincoln. For readers interested in the psychological and social nature of the man, this may not be the best selection. However, Oates does an excellent job portraying how Lincoln worked his fingers to the bone while developing his standing as a lawyer and politician. His description of Lincoln as a rough and tumble political longshot made 16th President of the United States in the election of 1861 is vivid and memorable. Much information is also included on how Lincoln and his administration struggled with the issue that would become his legacy: slavery in America. That said, Oates neglects to discuss in any great detail the economic influence of the nation's cotton industry on the political and social conditions of the era.

5 out of 5 stars Debunks the saint and presents a human .......2007-01-13

Lincoln, widely considered our best president, has been sainted in many quarters. Indeed he saved the union, freed the slaves, and preserved the constitution, but he was human too. Stephen Oates presents him warts and all - a man struggling with depression, a weak manager entrusting too much to his people, and a leader fighting a congress rallied against him for both being too progressive and too reactionary. It was a tough time, and many times the wonder is how Lincoln managed to bend without breaking.

The book is outstanding as a scholarly work, and as popular history. Enjoy!

With Malice Toward None is a well-written and informative look at Lincoln's life. I am very selective about the biographies that I spend my time reading because I consider the style of many to be suffocatingly boring. I looked over several on Lincoln, and selected this one. I was pleased with it through the end. The author does not waste space on finding the "flawed" man underneath the legend, which is popular in so many recent biographies. He explains Lincoln's life in a matter-of-fact and readable fashion. One of my favorite parts in the book is the explanation of how the Civil War proceeded and the absolutely essential role Lincoln played. It will give you an insightful look at the politics and history of the time, not to mention an appreciation for how much Lincoln endured before his triumph.

1 out of 5 stars I'm a teenager actually and this book is horrible.......2006-02-02

I am being forced to read this book in AP History. It is one of the worst bigs I have ever read n my life. It is boring and the author is far too verbose for his own good. He often uses 50 words when 2 will do. Do not buys this book. It is horrible beyond belief the only book I can think that is wworse then this is Founding Brothers. I wish I could ahve given it zero stars.

        4 out of 5 stars Great.......1999-03-14

Well I needed to read this book for a history book report. The book was interesting but also boring for a 14 year old to read. All of the political stuff but it was still a great book about Lincoln. I learned a lot about him and and how much he must have been stressing while he was President. If you like to read then u might as well read this book.

I Am Not Afraid to Dream provides an autobiography of a black man who triumphed over obstacles ranging from poverty to a difficult family background, including his grandmother's murder of his grandfather. This surveys the author's growing religious faith in the process of explaining the processes by which he gained inner strength and self-acceptance. An uplifting, moving account.

                              5 out of 5 stars A BOOK WITH A COURAGEOUS BACKBONE........1999-08-23

I FELT A SENSE OF BLESSEDNESS, YET A SENSE OF DISTRESS. THE AUTHOR IS MY BROTHER. TO READ ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND YOURSELF OPEN MANY CLOSED DOORS. MANY TEARS AND MANY SMILES COVERED MY FACE. THIS BOOK WAS WHAT MY FAMILY NEEDED TO ADDRESS OUR BELIEF THAT THERE IS A TIME AND A SEASON FOR EVERYTHING. FOR ME ," I AM NOT AFRIED TO DREAM", IS SEASONABLE AND TIMELY. IT TAKES A QUALITY OF MIND TO WRITE ABOUT A FAMILY THAT YOU ARE AN ACTIVE PART OF DAILY. I WOULD SAY THAT AUTHOR IS COURAGEOUS.

5 out of 5 stars As refreshing as a cold glass of tea on a hot summer's day!.......1999-07-26

This book made me laugh and cry, sometimes both at the same time. I couldn't put it down until I finished reading it, and even then, I didn't want to!

Dr. Lester's depiction of his early childhood is one of the many "bests" of this book. In fact, I would have purchased the book if it had contained only the story of his early life in a small town in south Georgia. It reminded me so much of my own childhood!

But there is so much more! The rest of the book brings the author from that idyllic-sounding childhood, on through a tough adolescence and young adulthood, and finishes with the telling of just how he achieved his ultimate dream. And how his dream continues to this very day.

He peppers the book with well-placed humor, gracefully adding a whimsical touch to even some of the more heartbreaking situations in the book.

Woven throughout the entire book is the author's awesomely-detailed appreciation of his Creator, a refreshing difference from most of today's autobiographical fare. Rather than TELLING the reader about his faith, he SHOWS it - the mark of a truly spiritual person, in my opinion! No matter what the reader's religious preference, there is a lot to identify with here.

He tells his story with humility, freely admitting his mistakes. His description of the prisons where he worked was chilling, and is one of the best depictions I've ever read of what it is like "in there." After all, Dr. Lester WAS "in there," even if only as a member of the professional staff. Who could better tell what it is really like?

The chapter about his sister Gwyn also touched my heart, because I believe it is an excellent example of how a good family pulls together when one of the family needs them to.

Yet another thing I enjoyed about this book is that the author is not afraid to address cultural and racial issues head on. It certainly taught this old white lady a few things! Most importantly, it taught me that no matter how different we may SEEM to be, we are more alike than we may know. :-)

Who should buy and read this book? Anyone who wants inspiration and motivation. Anyone who wants to "think outside the box," and anyone with an unfinished dream or two of their own. THIS is the book that will inspire you to pursue that goal, and to never give up!

While reading the book, I realized just how good a tool it could be for youth. I have two teen sons, and I have encouraged them both to read this book. In fact, I'd really encourage librarians to make this book available to young people. I firmly believe that the author is the type of person that I'd like my OWN two boys to become!

I encourage anyone who is looking for a good summer's read to choose this book. You won't be disappointed!

                              5 out of 5 stars Amazing...both bone-chilling and heartwarming....rare find.......1999-07-13

Wow!!!...sad at times, funny at times, truthful and sobering all the time...life. The author becomes transparent and acknowledges both the source and sustainer of life, moreover the one that makes it all possible. Author makes it abundantly clear that everything that has been done through him has been done both in-spite of himself and due to faith and perserverance. Definitely refreshing to see someone in today's society to give credit to where credit is due and not become self-absorbed. Eagerly anticipate more good work from this first time author.

We as human beings have an inner strength that helps govern our emotions, thoughts and desires. This book is a spiritual, personal, motivational and shares this human inner strength. I Am Not Afraid to Speak is poetry that reflects a beginning. It's reflection of that beginning and an explosion of a continuous life of struggle, disbelief, love, family, and God. The mind boggling thoughts that have remained suppressed without a venue to share with others. This poetry unties and releases the mind and soul and brings peace, healing and comfort. The poetry also instills hope, love and a strong undying love in God.

5 out of 5 stars A rare glimpse into the intimate areas of a man's heart.......1998-10-31

"No explorer who pioneered a new frontier ever showed more unbridled courage and heart than Peter Clothier when he ventures into and exposes the uncharted territory of his most private, tender, and raw wounds resulting in the creation of a sacred and safe space of healing for us all. This is required reading in the field of Higher Education as Peter is truly a hero, a guide, and a light for the Millenium."

4 out of 5 stars Male memoir precipitated by daughter's anorexia.......1997-11-27

This is Peter Clothier's memoir, a brief look back at how he grew up so emotionally constricted and angry and in pain, as well as the history of a couple of hard years in his life, the years when he had to deal with his college-age daughter's anorexia and mental disturbance. He starts out feeling as though life has given him a rough deal, is frustrated at how fame evades him, is anguished over not being closely enough involved in raising his sons from his first marriage. Then he starts exploring. By means of a men's support group, something called the Warrior Monk organization, chanting and body work, Clothier learns a great deal about his inner life and what is important to him. By the end, at his daughter's graduation from college and engagement to a young man, Clothier gets in touch with his spiritual side and discovers his own capacity for healing others.

The writing is crisp and forthright. You can clearly see this man learning about himself and his skewed perceptions. Personally, though I appreciated the honesty and welcomed the peek into his emotional life, I was less comfortable with his acceptance of some New Age-ish concepts. Nevertheless, we have too few real men's stories, and this one fills the gap admirably and engagingly.
