Book Description

Henry Villard was one of the most remarkable and important figures to shape the tumultuous history of nineteenth -century America. A preeminent Civil War journalist, an industrialist, and a financial maverick, his courage, perseverance, and farsightedness made him the equal of such titans of his day as J.P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie.

Penniless and not speaking a word of English, Villard emigrated in 1853 from Germany at the age of eighteen, leaving behind the privileges and expectations of his affluent, stifling parentage. Within five years of arriving on American soil, he had mastered the language and was covering the events of the day for the nation's top newspapers. Villard reported firsthand on the Lincoln-Douglas debates and later, from the front lines of the Civil War, filed graphic, hard-hitting reports that earned him the admiration of the newspaper community. His circle of acquaintances included President Lincoln, General Grant, and the famed abolitionist, William Lloyd Garrison, whose daughter he married.

When the Civil War ended, Villard's penchant for risk-taking and adventure and his uncanny business acumen led him to become a restless innovator, breaking new ground in many areas. In journalism, he launched the first news syndicate in the United States; in the world of finance, he was a pioneer of venture capitalism and one of the first to employ the leveraged buyout. He catapulted himself into presidency of the Northern Pacific Railroad and shared with Thomas Edison the vision of an electrified nation. His investment in Edison's electrical enterprises eventually paved the way for Villard to mastermind the consolidation of what is now known as the General Electric Company. In 1883, triumphantly driving the last spike himself, he completed the nation's second transcontinental railroad. Later that year a financial panic nearly ruined him, but within a few years he made a phenomenal comeback based on his faith in Edison and the future of electricity. Throughout his life, Villard's unfailing ability to impart his convictions to others, his talent for meeting the right people and gaining their confidence, enabled him to conquer adversity.

Drawing on unpublished letters, Henry Villard's German and English memoirs, and many other sources, Alexandra Villard de Borchgrave's and John Cullen's fast-paced, absorbing biography vividly re-creates Villard's times and tells the rags-to-riches story of a German immigrant who made major contributions to his adopted homeland.

4 out of 5 stars A remarkable book about a remarkable figure.......2007-01-22

This biography by A.Villard De Borchgrave, Henry Villard's great granddaughter, and the knowledgable man of letters, John Cullen, is an admirable book and much more than a biograpy. It follows the life of Heinrich Hilgard resp. Henry Villard in all its ups and downs, its great asset however is the comprehensive representation of Villard's worlds. The Palatine history after the failed revolution of 1848, Bismarck and German history before and after unification, the German-Americans in Civil War America, the rise of American journalism, the immensely detailed history of the Civil War with close-ups of Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Garrison and of course the history of transcontinental railroads.

The book is well written, clearly structured and contains a fine selection of photos graphically documenting Villard's life. I was most impressed by the close scrutiny of young Henry's seemingly unending struggle to survive in his first few immigrant years. He retained his optimism even after hard blows, he stuck to a life in style inspite of his spare means , his determination to succeed to prove his critical and somewhat narrow-minded father wrong - these character traits mainly make him an "American Titan". The "wanderer between two worlds" finally turned out to be a true American when he freely extended his generosity to manifold causes, especially in his home towns in the Bavarian Palatinate where his philanthropism is still very well known. In Speyer ( and not in Zweibrücken!- p. 344) he helped found a hospital with a nursing school whose huge buildings you will today find in "Hilgard-Straße" not far from his birthplace and the fine and ancient cathedral. Hilgard/Villard surely loved this imposing building, but as a catholic place of worship it could hardly have been the place of his protestant confirmation(p.11). While the book dutifully covers Villard's contacts with the most influential German-American at that time,Carl Schurz, it is a pity that it does not refer to the Palatine Thomas Nast, the Father of American Caricature and creator of Father Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars A 19th Century Forrest Gump.......2002-12-30

This book delivers on two levels. First, it is a well told journey through 19th Century American history. Henry Villard personally witnessed many of the transformational events of that time: the Colorado gold rush; the 1860 Republican Convention; Lincoln's journey from Springfield to Washington for his inauguration; the Civil War Battles of Bun Run, Shiloh, Corinth, Fredericksburg, Wilderness, Cold Harbor and Petersburg; the completion of the second transcontinental railroad; and the clashes of the industrial barons of the Gilded Age. This book takes you briskly through those events with Villard as the central figure. The story is that of a 19th Century Forrest Gump.

On another level, the book describes the rags to riches personal journey of this extraordinary man. Indeed, Villard's own life is a quintessential American story: a penniless immigrant becomes a star journalist and acquaintance of legendary generals and a president. After the war, he metamorphoses into an industrial titan and rival of Morgan and Gould, before suffering substantial financial setbacks and then revived fortunes that permit him to regain his place at the pinnacle of American Society.

The book is a very enjoyable read that describes important events in American history and the story of a man who played a significant, if largely forgotten, role in those events. It deserves more attention and a wider readership.

4 out of 5 stars Empathic history of grand-visioned man.......2001-12-22

This well-written biography gives a very empathic account of Villard and his contemporaries. Characters' weaknesses are described as forthrightly as their strengths.

The account covers more than Villard's participation in the financial world. It also tells of his experiences as a poor immigrant. Most vivid are the chapters that describe Villard's career as a Civil War correspondent, a 'special' to coin a period term.

Reading this book was enjoyable both because of the story, and the way it was told. The writing style is sometimes poetic, sometimes cheeky, but always concise.

I would highly recommend this book to those interested in the Civil War, or in war journalism. The chapters dealing with Gilded Age industrialism were more biographic than historically comprehensive. For a better historic account, I'd recommend "Titan : The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr" by Ron Chernow.

4 out of 5 stars railroad titan.......2001-05-05

This book is throughly researched by Harry Villard's great grand daughter. Despite the relationship the author looks at the pros and conns of the man.

This book is able to appeal to many interests. It is the story of a very young man, new to America who eventually makes it to the very top of society. It is a lso a story about the politics and battles during the Civil War; and it is a story of the Guilded Age and the railroad wars.

All this history centers on the life of Henry Villard, German born, young immigrant, newspaper reporter, and fiinally tycoon. A fascinating read with lots of history.

4 out of 5 stars A realistiv view to bettering one's own self.......2007-10-10

I enjoyed Martina's book - she put into words what I couldn't. Her common sense makes it easy to understand why she is the professional that she is - it takes self-control and clarity of thinking to realize that it's not hard to have the shape you want - and thinking it, is what its all about - no need to kill yourself trying to get skinny - just go about your daily business and apply these methods in your normal daily thoughts and actions and you will be exactlly what you think you can be. Get to work and you will get what you put in to it. -Shape Your Self: My 6-Step Diet and Fitness Plan to Achieve the Best Shape of Your Life

5 out of 5 stars I heart Martina.......2007-04-13

Seriously, this woman is a national treasure and a true champ. I heard her on Howard Stern recently and was very charmed by her personality and struggles. This book is like she's talking to you one on one and she's super cool. If you really want to be healthy, this book makes the most sense. I've got books like sugar busters and the biggest loser cookbook with recipes that seem to use a lot of processed, low fat, artificially sweetened ingredients. That's not truly healthy.

Now, if you don't like vegetables or drinking water...you're truly screwed in general. If you want to be the best you, you gotta eat your veggies!! Learn to like them, be a grownup!

All her recipes are yummy and full of vitamins and fiber and a balance of protein and calcium. One thing though, when she's talking about vegetarian sources of protein, she mentions a lot of soy products and stuff like that. But, you know, brocolli has a lot of protein. All veggies have protein. Eat soy in moderation - overcooked tofu can make you gassy, the hormones in soy can be harmful to young boys..and men?? I swear I heard a report that men in Asia who ate tons of soy experienced brain shrinkage. So how about..everything in moderation..except raw veggies! Oh and her exercises are good too, but I don't do well with reading about workouts - I need a dvd where an instructor tells me what to do and when. That's just how I roll.

Book Description

In the annals of sports, no individual rivalry matches the intensity, longevity, and emotional resonance of the one between two extraordinary women: Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.

Over sixteen years, Evert and Navratilova met on the tennis court a record eighty times—sixty times in finals. At their first match in Akron, Ohio, in 1973, Chris was an eighteen-year-old star and Martina, two years her junior, was an unknown Czech making her first trip to the United States. It would be two years before Martina finally beat Chris, and another year—after Navratilova had dropped twenty pounds and improved her game—before Evert publicly betrayed her first hint of concern. By then, the women were already friends and sometimes doubles partners, and the colorful story that would captivate the world was under way.

The Rivals is the first book to examine the intertwined journey of these legendary champions, based on extensive interviews with each. Taking readers on and off the courts with vivid, never-before-published material, award-winning sportswriter Johnette Howard shows how Evert and Navratilova came of age during the rambunctious golden age of tennis in the 1970s, and how—together—they redefined women’s athletics during a time of volcanic change in sports and society. Their epic careers unfolded against the backdrop of the fight for Title IX, the gay rights movement, the women's movement and the fall of the iron curtain. Howard draws entertaining, intimate, and myth-shattering portraits of Evert and Navratilova, describing the personal migrations each woman made, and showing how enmeshed their lives became.

Navratilova and Evert’s ability to forge and maintain a friendship during sixteen years of often-cutthroat competition has always provoked wonder and admiration. They were a study in contrasts, a collision of politics and style and looks. Chris was the crowd darling while Martina, her greatest foil, was often cast as the villain. Chris was the imperturbable champion who proved toughness and femininity weren’t mutually exclusive; Martina was portrayed as both emotionally fragile and some fearsome Amazon. Chris’s off-court life was presumed to be bedrock solid, the stuff of Main Street America; Martina’s was derided as outrageous and sometimes chaotic, even during her invincible years. Yet, through it all, the two remained friends who lifted each other to heights that each says she couldn’t have reached without the other.

Women’s tennis now is more popular than ever, thanks in large part to the trailblazing of Evert and Navratilova. A rivalry like theirs, filled with so many grace notes, is unique in sports history.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2007-10-17

A wonderful read. In depth of chris and martina throughout their rivalry of twenty years. I admired both players and hardly ever missed a match. If you want more insight into these two women's lives purchase it. I highly recommend this read for any tennis fan. It is fabulous!

5 out of 5 stars ICE PRINCESS VS NAVRAT.......2007-04-22

THIS IS A VERY INTERESTING AND WELL WRITTEN BOOK ABOUT THE TENNIS RIVALRY CONCERNING CHRIS EVERT AND MARTINA NAVRATILOVA. THERE MATCHES WERE LEGEND DURING THE 1980'S. THE BOOK COVERS ALOT MORE THAN JUST THIS. IT GIVES A LOOK AT THE PRIVATE LIVES OF CHRISSIE AND MARTINA. CHRISSIE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MARRIED LIFE. MARTINA ADMITTED TO BE BEING GAY AND ALSO DEFECTED FROM HER HOME COUNTRY OF CZECHOLSLOVAKIA TO ESCAPE COMMUNISM. THEY BOTH ARE LEGENDS IN THE TENNIS WORLD AND HELPED THE GROWTH OF TENNIS TO THE VERY POPULAR SPORT IT IS TODAY. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK AND RECOMMEND IT FOR ALL SPORTS FANS. THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB SHOWING US THE HUMAN SIDE OF BOTH RIVALS

5 out of 5 stars Game, Set and Match.......2007-01-20

This book offers an insightful look into the lives of Martina and Chris.
If you're a fan of either you'll enjoy their perspectives individually.
If you're a fan of both...all the better for you. You will read how each supported, coaxed, teased, fought, encouraged and ultimately validated each other and each other's career.
I think this book de-mythologizes much of what we've heard before about Chris and Martina's relationship. At the same time, it re-inforces things we already knew, but adds a little more depth: incredible friends, incredible rivals...A friendship that transcends their rivalry and a rivalry that transcended sport.

3 out of 5 stars A Literary Second Serve.......2006-09-04

In The Rivals, a middling addition to the tennis book industry, Johnette Howard argues that the Evert-Navratilova rivalry both reflected and changed women's tennis and women's role in professional sports. Fair enough. She also portrays the rivals as two intelligent, highly skilled and articulate women whose friendship was tested and strengthened by their on-court competition. Fair enough again. Also, the book is a quick, good read, albeit in the style of a 270 page sports column, where everybody always talks in the present tense. When all that is conceded though, what new perspective or insight does The Rivals bring to the party? In my view, not much, if anything, that couldn't be found by reading the autobiographies of the two champions, which Howard generously cites frequently. As for the writing on tennis here, there is nothing that can come close to John McPhee's classic Levels of the Game in recreating the context, tension, and skill of tennis at the highest levels.

4 out of 5 stars Times Have Changed.......2006-04-20

Given the high octane, big-money state of womens' tennis today, this book is a quaint look back at how things used to be in the 70s and 80s when tennis was more popular, but still much less sophisticated, than today's game.
The writing is high quality. The author spoke with Evert and Navratilova at length, including many of Martina's ex's, but not Jimmy Connors, Evert's most famous flame.
While their rivalry makes great history, watching it unfold was not the drama this book would like to recall it as. Most matches were boringly lopsided, especially when Evert was dominating the early years.
Women's tennis today is much more a game of equals where anything can happen. When Chrissie and Martina ruled, the only question was what time was their final because they were usually in it.
Still, the book pays homage to a nostalgic era, and recounts with great drama the slow build of a female rivalry and friendship for the sports ages.

Book Description

There's never been an athlete like her. Born and raised in Czechoslovakia, Martina Navratilova knew by the age of ten that she wanted to be a Wimbledon champion -- and a U.S. citizen. She would attain her goals and so much more -- but not before her incredible life unfolded in ways not even she could have dared imagine.
MARTINA is more than the thrilling story of an unparalleled career in the tough, sexy world of women's tennis. It is a startling tale of love (with famed novelist Rita Mae Brown), tragedy (her father "disappeared" when Martina was eight, and only later did she learn the true cause of his death), and personal as well as professional triumph. It includes fascinating, intimate portraits of the greats of women's tennis -- King, Evert, Casals, Austin -- plus revealing glimpses of her working relationship with basketball star Nancy Lieberman.
Emotion. Grit. Intensity. Integrity. Martina's shown them all from Flushing Meadows to Wimbledon, from Dallas to Paris to Sydney to Prague. Here they are again, in an autobiography only a champion could write.
"Fascinating and unexpectedly candid." --The San Francisco Chronicle

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A dated, but interesting view of Martina's life.......2003-02-13

This book is an interesting (but dated) autobiography by Martina. She explains about her childhood in then Communist Czechoslovakia, talking about people who influenced her and shaped her tennis career, starting with her grandmother and first coach. We learn about friends like Chris Evert, Sandra Haynie, Nancy Liebermann, Billie Jean King, Renee Richards, and how they shaped her tennis career. We also read about her relationship with Rita Mae Brown, plus the showdown with her parents once they figured out she was gay. It's interesting to observe Martina's mindset at this time--in her book, she was still making a half-hearted attempt to convince the reader that she was bisexual and interested in men...she mentioned Wayne Gretzky and speculates what an amazing kid they'd produce. At the time this book was published, Martina was in the throes of passion with Judy Nelson, former Maid of Cotton with The Perfect Hair and future Martina nemesis. I'd really like to see Martina update this biography--it would interesting to hear her side of the Martina/Judy Galimony Fracas, as well as how she felt when she finally retired from tennis, plus what she sees herself doing in the years ahead. I'd like to learn more about what she thinks of today's tennis players and comment on past tennis players with successful, but brief careers.

4 out of 5 stars Reads like a very well-read book report.......2000-08-11

Honestly, I purchased this book because key words "Rita Mae Brown" found it. Rita Mae is one of my very favorite authors, and I find that I have accidentally missed a few of her books. So... I was searching... and found this.

I'm not athletic, and I'm not into spectator sports. This book, rather than boring me, made tennis sound interesting!

I found it fascinating to learn that an active woman at the top of her field could have many of the insecurities that my friends and I have -- and some of the bad habits. Martina comes off as being a warm, likeable person. She seems very smart and very accomplished -- and very proud of herself, without coming off as being haughty.

I don't know whether Martina's English-As-A-Second-Language plays a factor in the narration, or whether it's George Vecsey's writing here, but the book, while clear, seems JUST A TRIFLE stilted. I'm also not quite sure who was just a friend and who she dated... not that it mattered, but it confused me. It reads like an A+ book report written by a senior in high school, not like a story.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed it a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST SERVE AND VOLLYER EVER.......1999-07-24

      1 out of 5 stars Soulless dribble.......2007-02-23

If Faulkner/Nelson team isn't embarrassed by this collaboration they must be members of the walking dead. Shameful, hoohah about nothing. Absolutely purposeless. At .01¢ it is over priced. I found my copy at the local library discard bin... now I know why. The genuinely talented Rita Mae Brown did herself a huge disservice letting her name appear on the cover. It only served to make her own self indulgent Martina catharsis "Sudden Death" seem like a mercy killing by associating her name with this garbage.

2 out of 5 stars Self Serving Tabloid Tell-all--A Scorned Wife Pity Party.......2003-02-06

This is an interesting book, self-serving at times. It presents the relationship from Judy's point of view. The best part of the book is the Introduction by Rita Mae Brown--that is absolutely hilarious, but insightful. I kept reading her introduction over and over.
Presenting the printed version of-- THS: Judy Nelson. Judy tells of her childhood, being Maid of Cotton, her first marriage to her rich doctor hubby who was cheating on her with one of his nurses, and how she met Martina. She discusses their years together, but the bulk of the book is on Judy's "galimony" suit against Martina and the ensuing brouhaha and media circus. Judy, as Martina's wife, felt she deserved half of Martina's earnings and property gained during their time together. The book gets rather tiresome at times; Nelson tries very hard to convince the reader to side with her. She really wants your sympathy, so she pours it on thick, carefully omitting or playing down all the expensive gifts and jewelry and perks Martina showered upon her during their relationship.
You can see her point about why she went after Martina after their breakup, yet the book is so one-sided, you ache to hear Martina's side of the story as well. I don't think we will get that chance, as Martina does not care to stoop to Judy's level. For an insightful view of Judy and Martina, and of their galimony battle, read Rita Mae Brown's "Rita Will." It gives a thoughtful, yet hilarious account of Rita's involvement as mediator in the Martina/Judy battle. And Rita's accurate portrait of Judy is a scream--she describes Judy as a person "whose hair gets ruined by a ceiling fan" and other witty, caustic observations that are most unflattering. Rita Mae's insights helps you to understand Judy's book even better. All in all, Judy's book is an interesting read when you don't feel like taxing your brain.

      2 out of 5 stars Kept Woman.......2000-04-16

After reading this book what is clear is that Judy Nelson was basically a kept woman. The rich and famous can afford to do that...so long as they are rich and famous and their fragile egos are intact. And why is Nelson complaining? For 6 years she had an intimate relationship with a celebrity and lived a lavish lifestyle. But like many relationships it came to a abrupt end when Navratilova simply moved on to another girlfriend. That's life Nelson and it happens every day. Poetic justice for Nelson, who cheated on her husband Ed. Navratilova had an extended fling with Nelson and Nelson thought it was love.

      5 out of 5 stars Superb, a literary must.......1997-12-16

This was a wonderful book. It gives insight not only to gay/lesbian relationships but all relationships. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever been in love and then lost that love!

      1 out of 5 stars neurotica - Texas style!.......2007-07-28

As Dorothy Parker once said in a review, "This book should not be tossed aside lightly, it should be thrown with great force." This is Part Duex of Ms. Nelson's self-aggrandizing, exploitative effort to wring yet another buck or two out of her experiences with her two notable exes - Rita Mae Brown and Martina Navaratilova. Please do not spend the money for this thing - we really don't want to encourage her.

      5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ.......1998-08-24

When I finished this book, I had a new respect for Judy Nelson. With everything that has been said and printed about her she still finds it in herself to let us in and get to know her a little better. Since the only things that we really knew before her books, was that she left her husband and kids for another woman, she took alot of heat for that from both sides, gay and straight. She took even more heat when the two women parted company and her first book. It takes real strength and character to come through all of this and still refuse to tear Martina apart like she has done to Judy. I for one really thank Ms. Nelson for her honesty.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely "Riveting".......1998-06-29

This book was magnificent. If you have ever been in love and lost that love, this is the book you need to read. I have read her first book"Love Match" and it was wonderful, but this book is "double" wonderful. She seems at peace finally and once again happy with her life. And if anyone deserves it, it is Ms. Nelson. She helped me in my time of crisis. I lost someone very special to me, and I read her book. The courage she exemplifies, made me feel like I had a friend to talk to. She is a wonderful person, makes you feel like she is your best friend. I truly hope she writes another wonderful book.

      5 out of 5 stars What a book!!!.......1998-02-21

This book, is a definate for anyone who needs the courage to make difficult choices in their lives. Judy Nelson has become a heroine of mine just for her convictions and her honesty. I really related to her. I read Love Match but found her changed and "still" in this one. I wish she would write more!!!
