The Good News and The Bad News.......2003-06-24
I taught classes of adults with this book. I had many complaints about the fact that it was difficult to follow. Some of the exercises were ambiguous and some were over wrought with typing. It did have poor planning on the organizational side. While it built on the previous exercises, sometimes it was ambitious on some items and lacking on others. A similar amount of time was spent on 'opening' a document as was spent on creating a 'table.' On the positive side, if you already know what you are doing, it was easy to follow. If you already know what you are doing, you probably don't need this book.
Random organization, separates the teaching from the doing.......2000-08-21
I teach computer applications to 8th graders, and this book is a disappointment to me and my students. It is geared more toward the business worker. The order in which it teaches skills is completely random. For example, it teaches advanced operations such as how to create envelopes and labels before it teaches the most basic functions such as how to format text. It also focuses too much on the Internet capabilities of MS Office 2000 (useless "bloatware" if you ask me).
Another problem is the presentation of the lessons. It lists the steps to complete a task, then has an exercise to be completed. It would be much more helpful if the students were able to DO the steps while the book explains them, THEN have exercises to do on their own. Instead, the book separates the teaching from the doing. This is a very ineffective way to learn.
Finally, the confusing language it sometimes uses doesn't help either. My students constantly ask for clarification. Stay clear of this one. There must be better books out there.
Thankfully there's DDC around!.......1999-12-01
Mary Wright, Tech Editor: "For the past 7 years, I have been developing and administering computer skills courses to adults who are both educationally and economically disavantaged. It has been extremely challenging to locate computer training textbooks that can be geared to the functionally illiterate. DDC Publishing is the only publishing company that truly understands and meets the computer educational needs of this market."

A life-saver........1999-12-01
This book was a real life-saver for me, and I know it's good enough to be used in some computer prep courses in high schools around here. This is the third DDC book I've used, and all three have been great. They're not flashy, but their step-by-step style actually makes it easier and faster to learn for the average person. Yes, there are some typos and glitches here and there, but they're hardly the prohibitive stumbling blocks the other reviews seem to suggest. I'd not be afraid to buy it. And some of DDC's other stuff--like the other two titles I got on Word and Access--is MOUS Certified BY MICROSOFT and will (I hope!) get me ready for the MOUS Certification exam.

A compelling selection of Hardy's best poems........2007-01-20
A newspaper writer in Spain once observed that Thomas Hardy had the rare distinction of being one of the best novelists of the nineteenth century and one of the finest poets of the twentieth. Hardy himself ranked his poetry far higher than his fiction, and in Britain today his poems are considered among the best of the modern age.
This recording features performances of more than 70 of Hardy's poems by two distinguished British actors, Bruce Alexander and Janet Maw. The carefully constructed program uses excerpts from Hardy's autobiography and the writings of his first wife, Emma, to provide a context for the poetry.
The result is an excellent introduction to newcomers to Hardy's work that will also delight those who have already discovered this wise and compassionate poet. What is most impressive is Hardy's versatility: of the 70-odd poems here, I don't think any two use the same form, and the content ranges from the joys of young love to the wistful resignation of the poet, in his eighties, musing on fate and change.
When the Academy of American Poets asked me to name ten poetry recordings that every library should have, this was one of my recommendations.

Figure Skating Luminaries Reveal Personal Reflections
This journalistic account takes readers on an insider's voyage to the heart of the sport, chronicles figure skating's history, interviews its stars, and captures the personal reflections of its most enthusiastic fans.
In their own words, well-known- skaters such as Elvis Stojko, Toller Cranston, Lu Chen, Robin Cousins, and Scott Hamilton offer their innermost thoughts and reflections on figure skating -- its past and future.
Figure skating luminaries like Sandra Bezic reveal the sacrifices and challenges made to become a star.
Skate Talk is a moving portrait of figure skating and one that chronicles the sport as no other book has ever done.
Customer Reviews:
An Engaging Read!.......2001-07-31
I bought this book on the recommendation of friends and I'm glad I did -- it's a wonderful look inside skating though the words of the skaters and skating community themselves, with very little editorial commentary. The stories are easy to follow and really bring a different perspective into the wins, losses, triumphs and tragedies the skating world has gone through over the past half century. I enjoyed all the stories in the book except for one, where a couple of hockey players discuss power skating. Normally I wouldn't care one way or the other about it except that one of them pretty much trashes the sport of figure skating in a statement he makes, and I question the inclusion of this in a book aimed at figure skaters and fans (who akready have to hear stuff like this enough as it is!) But this is a minor quibble. Skip the hockey player story and you'll be fine. :)
one of the best figure skating books availiable.......1999-05-28
This book is a collection of interviews with some of the world's top skaters. The choice of champions included goes beyong the usual list of world titleholders and Olympic champions to stars true skating fans rarely see and would love to know more about, such as spinning phenom Lucinda Ruh.
Most of the stories are personal, giving more insight into the skaters lives than a collection of competition results and technical explanations would. For anyoe who follows figure skating, this is a must-have book.
The year's best!.......1999-05-02
I have read a lot of figure skating books published this year and last and this unpretentious, soft cover book is the best. It is a series of oral essays by skaters, coaches, commentators and officials. Those interviewed, some famous, some not, talk about everything from skating as Mickey Mouse for Disney, to what it is like to come and train in the US. from Russia, to some of the dramatic, tragic stories of this little world as the death of Sergei Grinkov. Mr. Milton must be a good interviewer because he draws out the skaters and others in the book so that they provide real insight and emotion to the subject. And we see their love for their sport on every page. This book has more content than any of the flashy, coffee table books produced recently. I highly recommend it.
Entertaining Read!.......1999-03-29
While this book is not long on depth, it does give some entertaining insights into the thoughts behind the images. Great for younger readers as well.
Skaters talk from the heart.......1998-07-11
A interesting book that allows the skaters to comment without interruption. The book is a series of comments from almost any skater you have heard of on almost any skating subject you can think of. An interesting and enjoyable read.
Book Description
The Bible is as relevant today as it was in Jesus' time-if you only know where and how to look. In Scripture to Live By, you'll find people of practical faith just like you, who look to the Scripture for guidance in the living of their daily lives. The problems they face are large and small, petty and profound, life and death-from raising kids on your own to dealing with serious illness. Yet the solutions are all to be found within Scripture-if you learn to read God's word with an open heart. Arron Chambers shows you how to do just this, with the insightful commentary that accompanies each story.
This collection of stories by some of today's most respected Christian writers including Molly Noble Bull, David Faust, and Dr. Rebecca Price Janney, is sure to teach us all how to keep God's word with us throughout the day.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT BOOK!!.......2007-07-13
This is the second book I have read by this author. Arron Chambers has a great message at the end of each story. His thoughts and insights have impacted my life, and helped progress my walk with Christ. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
Words For Life.......2007-04-11
Arron Chambers has compiled a fantastic array of stories from people all around the country and from different walks of life to tell the important story of "Scriptures To Live By." I thoroughly enjoyed the stories from Arron's friends, associates, and people plucked at random (okay, not really at random), but even more so, I enjoyed Arron's take at the end of each story. Arron has proven once again that he is a gifted writer with great insights not only to Scripture, but to living life on this planet as a follower of Christ.
I highly recommend this book, and I know that I will purchase more copies of it to use as gifts for people I love.

Customer Reviews:
Simple but colorful pictures--but nothing else to recommend........1998-07-29
You should be aware that this book is only useful for reading to babies no older than, say, two or three years old. Each page (with a few exceptions) contains only one word and a picture that describes that word. But in some cases, for thoses children who do not know the word, it is difficult to determine what in the picture the word is describing. For example, on the "scarf" page, one sees a picture of what looks like a little boy wearing a cap, scarf, and jump suit standing in front of a large window with prominent white curtains and snow falling outside. So what in that picture is the "scarf"? And to make matters worse, the scarf and cap are identical in color and virtually touching so a young child might think they are one item. Of course a parent could clarify this to the child, but why should a parent have to work at clarifying the shortcomings in this book? Save your money and let this book remain on the bookshelves.
