        Book Description

An account of the Empress of Russia who expanded her vast country's borders south to the Black Sea and west into Europe while continuing the Westernization begun by Peter the Great. Catherine's love affairs with different officers and politicians were widely publicized, though much of what was published was not true. Nevertheless, most of her lovers were promoted to the highest ranks and some of them proved to be extremely talented people (for instance prince Patiomkin, a very prominent general and politician). Contents: Catherine's Girlhood; The Grand Duchess; The Revolution of 1762; The Orlof Ascendancy; Patiomkin and the Minor Favorites; The Crimean Journey; The Death of Patiomkin; The Last Years; and Catherine the Great. Book Description

In the sixteenth century the modern meaning of courtship - 'wooing someone' - developed from an older sense - 'being at court'. The Rhetoric of Courtship takes this semantic shift as the starting point for an incisive account of the practice and meanings of courtship at the court of Elizabeth I, where 'being at court' pre-eminently came to mean the same as 'wooing' the Queen. Exploring the wider context of social anthropology, philology, cultural and literary history, Catherine Bates presents courtship as a judicious, sensitive and rhetorically conscious understanding of public and private relations. Gascoigne, Lyly, Sidney, Leicester, Essex, and Spenser are shown to reflect in the fictional courtships of their poetry and prose the vulnerabilities of court life that were created by the system of patronage. The Rhetoric of Courtship thus makes an important contribution to Renaissance cultural history, using the court of Elizabeth I as a test case for representations of the courtier's role and power in the literature of the period.

Miss Small, the gym teacher, is teaching A.J., Andrea, and the gang to juggle scarves, balance feathers, and do the Chicken Dance! Is this any way to stay in shape? Whatever happened to good old dodgeball?

In fact, all the grown-ups at A.J.'s school seem to have something wrong with them. What's going on here? What are A.J. and the kids in his class going to do? They've got to convince Miss Small to act her age before the end of the year! Never before has school been this mixed up -- or this much fun. Popular author Dan Gutman pulls out all the stops for this right-on second-grade hilarity.

Be sure to read all the zany stories in this series: Miss Daisy is Crazy!, Mr. Klutz in Nuts!, Mrs. Roopy is Loopy!, and Ms. Hannah is Bananas!

                Book Description

This is a sparkling anthology of the best of The Wall Street Journal's "middle column" features that have appeared regularly on Page One of The Wall Street Journal for the past fifty years. The "A-hed"-so called because of its headline style-has evolved into an icon of American feature writing, its major charm being the ability to tell a story with wit and whimsy in 1,500 words or less. It's often a story a reader unfamiliar with the Journal wouldn't expect to find in such an august publication. Indeed, the bit of high-profile real estate that it occupies once held a daily tip sheet on the stock market. But the Journal's legendary managing editor, Barney Kilgore, decided one day that what the Journal's harried business readers really needed was a tonic or a diversion-a story that in his words, "floated off the page each day" and would be "the kind of story you don't expect to read in The Wall Street Journal." That explains why readers recently were treated to a piece on people who now freeze-dry their pets, and why a few years ago they read about the not-uncontroversial efforts to translate the Bible into Klingon. Those are but two examples of stories that actually appear in this unique and fascinating anthology.

                4 out of 5 stars Nothing Heavy.......2003-12-06

For those who enjoy good journalistic writing, these stories are like eating a box of chocolates. Reading one or two a day can be a real treat. Reading a half dozen at a time may leave a saccharine aftertaste.

Editorial arrangement of the stories in topical groups is reasonable enough, but the editor plays coy with the date of composition, putting it at the end of the essay. It's as if the topics are so airy, it makes little difference whether they're true in the recent past or forty years ago. Enjoy the writing, chuckle over the odd characters profiled, don't take the book too seriously.

4 out of 5 stars News Stories Of Lasting Quality and Value.......2003-11-09

Most daily journalism is written, edited and published under strict deadline pressure, and is as perishable as the newsprint it's printed on. But there are exceptions. Give a talented reporter freedom of time and subject matter, and sometimes the result can soar close to, if not actually achieve, the quality of literature. Some great examples of this are collected in "Floating Off the Page."

The Wall Street Journal is primarily known as a financial newspaper. But since 1941, the middle column of its front page has been devoted to a feature on just about any subject under the sun. What happened to the mail destined for the World Trade Center after 9/11? Why were people attempting to translate the Bible into Klingon--and why was there a dispute over how to do this? Why was a man trying to develop a non-flatulent bean? This is only a quick sampling of some of the stories to be found in this offbeat, entertaining, informative volume.

Some of these pieces are truly timeless, though most represent a snapshot of a past moment; all are worth another look. Keep it by your bedside or in your bathroom or carry it with you on your next trip. You'll find it a great one to browse and dip into again and again.--William C. Hall

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Funny.......2003-06-23

Admittedly, I knew very little about the Middle Column of the Wall Street Journal before reading this book. Now, I might just have to get a subscription to WSJ! The stories unfold as if they are the creation of some short story writer. Would you ever think that getting a hole-in-one in golf could be a bad thing? Well, in Japan, it is....in a way. And if you think that Stephen King writes a lot of books, wait until you hear about the man who holds the world record. A lot of the stuff you will learn from this book is mainly to entertain friends, but it's just as entertaining as reading a novel. Plus, you will get a perspective of how people thought 25 years ago and just how right they were. The only thing preventing the book from getting 5 stars is that it might be a tad bit on the "long" side and the editor attempts to group the stories by content. Personally, I would have rather had it completely mixed up because one of the chapters is a bit "dry." All in all, a great read that will have you smiling quite a bit.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting to read and useful as a gift.......2003-02-19

A few times a year we need a gift for someone whose tastes and interests are not well known to us. After perusing the many brief essays that make up this book, I know this will be a choice we'll use again and again.

First, the editor chose widely among dates available, resulting in a selection that includes not only material from the past decade, but studies that reach into the early sixties. It is intriguing to play a little game whilst reading each story: what decade is it? Sometimes you'll win; sometimes the answer will have you scratching your head for a while.

Second, the range of topics is virtually encyclopedic: from the academic ("The Art of the Perfectly Awful", a writing contest), to the esoteric ("The Bean of His Existence", about improving the quality of beans), to the banal ("Naked Assumptions", about nudist prudists), to the frankly bizarre ("Bear Hunting Is Hard on Wives"). There is much here you do not know about; there is probably plenty you have never heard of before.

Finally, some of the material is side-splittingly funny, some is thought provoking, and some is frankly poignant. This is far from being a one-note book; it invokes a full range of emotion whilst it ranges across time, geography, and subjects. This makes it a good gift for yourself or, for that matter, nearly anyone.

4 out of 5 stars a good mix of stories.......2002-11-06

Some of them a extremely funny, a few quite serious. This book makes an excellent airplane read and shows off the wit of the WSJ's writers.

"Off the Wall" is a very interesting book. Madison's teacher Mrs.Wing disappears, and if that's not bad enough Aimee's gone back on a puppy promise they decided back a long time ago. Another thing going on is that a mysterious writer MF13 is posting mean messages and now her friends are avoiding her! Could life get any worse? It just did! Madison found out that Ivy has been copying her lab notes! Arrgh! What should Madison do?

5 out of 5 stars a vast improvement over #14.......2004-08-24

In "Off the Wall" Madison Finn faces a bunch of new dilemmas. This time around, things are getting stranger than strange. First off, her favorite teacher, Mrs. Wing, disappears without telling anyone where she is. Second of all, Aimee backs off on a promise to Madison-one about how the girls wanted their dogs to have puppies together. And then there is the biggest part of this book: a website called "The Wall." Egg encourages his friends to visit the site, and when they do, everyone becomes hooked. Then the trouble starts. Someone at Far Hills Junior High isn't being nice. First they decide to write a nasty post about Lindsey Frost, a friend of Madison's. But when that post is gone, a new batch of posts come up, written by someone whose pen name is "MF13." To Madison's friends and family, this sounds oddly like HER. When Madison's friends and parents become icy towards her, she becomes determined to find out who is posing as her and trying to get her into trouble. Then Madison finds out that that someone is Ivy, who has been blabbing it away to Madison's crush Hart that she has been doing these things. But Madison's anger gets her into deep trouble and even manages to get her grounded. This book was a vast improvement over "Double Dare" (book 14) in the series. I found that I liked it better. I hope the next few installments keep pace with this book and not with "Double Dare." Dower also leaves a bunch of notes about surfing the net and web boards. As always, there is new IM slang in the book as well for readers to try out.

5 out of 5 stars Truly "Off the Wall"!!.......2004-08-08

In this, the fifteenth installment of Laura Dower's "Madison Finn" series, there appears to be trouble in Finnland (get it: Finn; Finnland? maybe not), or at least where Madison's three best gal pals are concerned. After Madison is introduced to a seemingly innocent new message board online - appropriately called The Wall - she starts to understand that the Internet isn't always, well, friend-friendly. First Lindsay, then Fiona, and finally Aimee alienate themselves from our title character after reading falsified rumors about themselves on The Wall, posted by the mysterious "MF13".
Al signs point to Madison as the culprit...but SHE knows she would never have written such offensive, secret things about her BFFs for everyone at Far Hills Junior High to see. Who really IS MF13, and can he or she be stopped before Maddie's life ends up completely destroyed?
You'll have to read (and should read) to find out the ending to this next "Files" caper!
As a twelve-year-old girl myself, I don't READ so much as DEVOUR these books each and every time I step into a bookstore. Dower does a wonderful job of creating a series that females ages 10-14 can relate to. In this and all the rest of the Madison Finn novels, she allows readers to delve into the world of her escapades while still being able to indentify with the friends, crushes and parental interventions the title heroin is faced with. Meawhile, Madison herself personfies the typical tween-age female antagonist we all know and love in our own lives. And the good news is, if you find Madison's over-thinking, often-pessimistic behavior too exaggerated to relate to, there's a supporting "cast" of characters with varied personas who often interact with the series' centerpiece chick (a.k.a. Madison Finn).
...Just be sure not to emulate the ever-evil Poison Ivy!

Since I hate books where there is a conspiracy it wasn't on my `Have to Read' list. I understand that Ivy and Maddie are enemies, but what Ivy did was totally harsh. I mean she practically ruined Madison's life! I also thought that the way Fiona, Aimee, and Lindsey blocked out Madison was harsh too. I would totally trust my friend if she said she didn't do it.

In a blunt, outspoken style, Stories Off the Wall focuses on the characters, places, and incidents that have shaped him as a man and a climber. Readers will witness the professionalism and skill that make Roskelley one of the most respected mountaineers in the world.

                4 out of 5 stars Humbling........2007-06-12

This makes book makes you stop and think about life and how to live it. You can sit back like most of us do and just exist or you can push to the limits like Roskelley and enjoy some of the greatest personal achievements possible. But this comes at a cost, he's lost friends and climbing partners and I'm sure it's been very difficult on his family relationships. From the sounds of things though, I don't think he would change how his life has turned out. If your thinking about hooking yourself to a rock anytime soon, read this just to make sure you know what your getting into.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Mountain Climbers.......2002-03-19

Having enjoyed reading Nanda Devi, I bought this book as I liked Roskelly's writing style and subjects. In this book, Roskelly writes short stories from throughout his climbing career and provides a good framework of how he became a climber and how he stayed alive. Probably the most interesting theme through this book was the value he placed on having good climbing partners and how close he was to the partners. That's interesting because it was very clear from reading Nanda Devi that he was very opinionated and compromise is not his specialty. Not only does he stow high praise on these climbing partners, but there is also a story of a renowned hunter who befriends Roskelly and eventually struggles with cancer. This was a particularly heartwarming story of a great individual and his unique ability to hunt.

But the stories that will leave you wanting more involve high-altitude climbing where death is close at hand. One particular story has Roskelly awakening in the middle of the night realizing he is suffering from pulmonary edema and will die if he doesn't drop altitude.

This book provides great mountaineering stories as well as insight into the life of John Roskelly, the renowned climber. I highly recommend this book for anyone with interest in mountain climbing.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2001-06-20

John Roskelley is arguably the greatest American mountaineer of his generation. His credentials are awesome, and he is alive to tell the tale. He is a rarity: a great climber who can also write. Usually the two do not go together; the only other exception I can think of is Austrian great Kurt Diemburger.

Mr. Roskelley's snapshot-style autobiography is a delight. Beginning in his 16th year as a wild child with incredible energy and no focus, he discovered, with the help of his father, the Spokane Mountaineers Club. He never looked back. They treated him as an "adult," which was of vital importance to him, and after his first trek up Mt. Rainier, he knew he had a "forever longing to be above those clouds."

He found himself an unlikely partner who was as preppie, straight arrow as John was wild and rebellious, but they made a perfect team. Both were impatient to a fault, resolute and absolutely fearless as you can only be when you are that young. They rock-climbed at Yosemite, climbed icefalls in Idaho and attacked Dengali (otherwise known as Mt. McKinley) in Alaska.

At an age when most climbers are totally unrecognized, he was invited on a climb up Dhaulgiri, a 26,800 ft. monster in Nepal, Himalaya. He wasn't quite sure what it was; he just knew he wanted to go. The team's successful ascent was only the third that had ever been made.

Mr. Roskelley brings a lot of practicality, bluntness and a touch of the poet when he recounts his adventures and the friends he has made along the way. I am sure he can be a difficult friend. He never minces words and has an appalling way of "laying it on the line" letting tender sensibilities fly where they may. His tenacity in achieving his goals is sometimes like being confronted with a charging Mack truck. He has a reputation of being the worst of the macho, MCP (male chauvinist pig) in a group that is famous for these traits. I don't think this is an entirely a fair evaluation. He doesn't like anything to interfere with the dedication and concentration it takes to successfully climb a difficult peak. Romances and groupies are prime distractions. He has no patience or tolerance for either. Yet he displays in his fine writing a romantic, lyrical side that would probably amaze his good buds on the mountain.

I recommend this book highly to anyone from the armchair adventurer to the skilled climber to someone who just wants a highly entertaining read.

                4 out of 5 stars Worth reading..........1999-10-05

For a guy with the reputation of being something of a Neanderthal, Roskelley writes really well. This is an expressive, lucid book which only occasionally slips over the edge into macho and/or sentimentality. Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Good book that tells it like it is........1997-02-25

Bottom line is that this is a book that is written like it is. Life of a climber means broken relationships, hard times, and amazing acomplishments. This book is down to earth and is a good read from start to finish. Probably the best book he has written
