Book Description
Marie Thérése Louise de Savoie-Carignan, Princess de Lamballe, was fated to be not only an eye-witness but a victim of the Reign of Terror. She was born in Turin in 1749, was married in 1767 to Stanislaus, Prince of Lamballe and son of the Duke of Penthiévre, which brought her into the relationship of sister-in-law to the Duke of Orléans. Her husband died within a year, leaving her, as she expresses it, "a bride when an infant, a widow before I was a mother or had a prospect of becoming one." A marriage was proposed between the Princess and Louis XV, but it fell through. In her retirement she gained the friendship of Marie Antoinette, who appointed her superintendent of the royal household on the accession of Louis XVI. This official connection grew into a sisterly intimacy of the most cordial kind. Their youth of brilliant promise was soon overshadowed by ominous troubles. The lighter temperament of the Queen was happily balanced by the philosophic gravity of the Princess, who foresaw the bitter fruits of the conditions in which her royal mistress had been reared and would not radically change. This journal-record of experiences and reflections is as pathetic a tale as has ever been told.

It's from a woman who was there...........2007-09-09
How can anyone (except experts who can prove it's not true) place a value on a book written by a person who was actually there with Marie Antoinette and lived to tell the tale? Anyone with any interest in the beheaded queen will want to read this book.
A memoir without parallel!.......2006-07-26
Lovely, thoughtful, tormented Princesse de Lamballe, close friend of Queen Marie-Antoinette, tells her story in her own words, as edited by her adopted daughter Catherine Hyde. As a student of the French revolution, I found this first hand account of the fall of the French monarchy to be indispensable. I came to am understanding of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette that I never had before. I highly recommend this report for those doing serious research or just looking for a good book to read.

Book Description
In 1955, Anne Morrow Lindbergh published her timeless book of reflections, Gift from the Sea. This perennial favorite used the metaphor of seashells to explore the inner spiritual path, gently guiding readers to practice simplifying, quieting, shedding, and centering in a too-frantic world. Two generations later, in a far more fast-paced world, Anne M. Johnson asks women to discover the beauty and meaning of Lindbergh's timeless "shells" all over again. In Return to the Sea, she uses experiences from her own spiritual journey — as a busy mother, career woman, and therapist — to offer a renewed vision of ways to create intentional space in our lives for personal and spiritual growth. Shell illustrations, along with centering exercises, meditations, and journal-writing exercises, enhance each chapter's reflections on Lindbergh's original "shell" passages. Readers who loved Gift from the Sea the first time — and women who have yet to be introduced — welcome these reflections in a beautiful new gift edition.

Return to the Sea.......2003-09-19
I just can't say enough how wonderful this book is.
A Disappointment.......2000-03-22
This attempt to extend a masterpiece of poetic philosophizing on matters a woman ponders at mid-life is a whiney and disappointing series of personal complaints in the self-congratulatory self-pity mode followed by trite self-help suggestions at the end of each chapter.
I love it and want two copies in French to give as gifts!.......1999-07-20
This is a wonderful midlife (or early life) book for women! Is it available in French?
A good journaling companion!.......1998-12-15
Anne Johnson has given the reader a great gift. This book is an excellent companion for the journaling soul. Written with a warm, insightful and sensitive voice, not unlike Lindbergh's in Gift From the Sea.
This book is a lovely companion to Gift From the Sea.......1998-09-21
Reading this book is like having a wonderful, personal conversation with the author. It is also a wonderful companion to Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift From The Sea. I'm always amazed when I read and re-read Gift From the Sea that Mrs. Lindbergh and I (a 41 yr old housewife) could have so many feelings and thoughts in common. Anne Johnson shows us that we are all connected in our thoughts and feelings. Through wonderful, common, everyday experiences Anne Johnson shows us that we can Return to the Sea and feel present in the moment. I know millions of women have read, loved and taken Gift From the Sea to heart, and I'm sure many will do the same with Return to the Sea.

Book Description
Popular notions about migration to the United States from Latin America and the Caribbean are too often distorted by memories of earlier European migrations and by a tendency to generalize from the more familiar cases of Mexico and Puerto Rico. Between Two Islands is an interdisciplinary study of Dominican migration, challenging many widespread, yet erroneous, views concerning the socio-economic background of new immigrants and the causes and consequences of their move to the United States.
Eschewing monocausal treatments of migration, the authors insist that migration is a multifaceted process involving economic, political, and socio-cultural factors. To this end, they introduce an innovative analytical framework which includes such determinants as the international division of labor; state policy in the sending and receiving societies; class relations; transnational migrant households; social networks; and gender and generational hierarchies.
By adopting this multidimensional approach, Grasmuck and Pessar are able to account for many intriguing paradoxes of Dominican migration and development of the Dominican population in the U.S. For example, why is it that the peak in migration coincided with a boom in Dominican economic growth? Why did most of the immigrants settle in New York City at the precise moment the metropolitan economy was experiencing stagnation and severe unemployment? And why do most immigrants claim to have achieved social mobility and middle-class standing despite employment in menial blue-collar jobs?
Until quite recently, studies of international migration have emphasized the male migrant, while neglecting the role of women and their experiences. Grasmuck and Pessar's attempt to remedy this uneven perspective results in a better overall understanding of Dominican migration. For instance, they find that with regard to wages and working conditions, it is a greater liability to be female than to be without legal status. They also show that gender influences attitudes toward settlement, return, and workplace struggle.
Finally, the authors explore some of the paradoxes created by Dominican migration. The material success achieved by individual migrant households contrasts starkly with increased socio-economic inequality in the Dominican Republic and polarized class relations in the United States.
This is an exciting and important work that will appeal to scholars and policymakers interested in immigration, ethnic studies, and the continual reshaping of urban America.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2006-05-05
This is not your typical ethnic studies book. In addition to theory, this book provides an impressive array of quantifiable data to justify the author's postulations. Anyone who is wondering about studying sociology or wondering why sociology, ethnography, history, and cultural studies are important ought to read this book. Anyone looking to start a discourse about migration, race, socio-economic, and political issues of migrants could use this book as a good source of vocabulary and analytical construct.
From Merengue to Washington Heights.......2000-06-03
Interesting, well-researched book on Dominican migration between the the Dominican Republic and the United States, "Between Two Islands," is an important book for those who want to understand the reasons and causes why many Dominicans leave their nation. The title, referring to the island nation and Manhattan Island in New York City (which houses the largest Dominican community in the world outside the island) catches one's attention, as this group stands to become the third largest group of Latinos in the United States (after Mexican-Americans and Puerto Ricans). The author has done careful and thoughful research in explaining the wave of Dominican immigration to the U.S., however little is covered on the large waves of Dominican immigrants to neighboring Puerto Rico or the Netherlands/Netherlands Antilles. You don't have to live in or near Washington Heights (the Manhattan neighborhood with the largest Dominican community in the city) to really grasp this books importance. As Latinos stand to replace African-Americans as the largest minority group in the country, it is important to understand why this is happening now and now back in the 1960's (Trujillo regime did not permit emigration from the country) or why many chose to go to New York. In addition to this book readers should also pick up a copy of the books "Why the Cocks Fight," and "Sugarball" to understand the Dominican experience entirely. Overall, this is one of the best anthropology books I ever read and I highly recommend it to all.

Product Description
Many people in the world know about the failure of William Bligh's Bounty voyage. Relatively few know about his second expedition that successfully transported breadfruit from Tahiti to the West Indies and mapped the treacherous Torres Straits. Without Bligh's knowledge, George Tobin, a young lieutenant on that successful voyage, made extensive notes and did a series of ink and watercolor sketches. After Tobin returned home in 1793, he wrote a memoir based on those notes that he hoped to publish and illustrate with his sketches. Tobin gives a fair appraisal of Bligh and a sympathetic view of Tahitian culture. Now, for the first time, more than a century and a half after the author's death, that witty and insightful memoir, with those well observed sketches, is now in print.

"Too good! I couldn¿t put it down.¿¿Robyn Campbell-Ouchida, editor Quinn Anne Carrigan, attractive and innocent, finds herself adrift after she moves from her Boston home to the hedonistic, sun-drenched world of Miami, Florida. Along with her ditzy girlfriend, Cyndi, she finds herself being sucked into a downward spiral of partying and drug use that leaves her desperate to find some purpose for her life. What she inadvertently discovers is a heady mix of adventure, romance, and near disaster when she is hired as a cook for a three-man crew that¿s delivering a yacht from Miami to Negril, Jamaica. The scheduled six-day trip aboard the Zephyr, a forty-foot sloop, turns out to be anything but routine. On her second day at sea, Quinn accidentally sets the galley on fire. Captain Tommy¿s quick thinking saves the yacht from going up in smoke, but that¿s only the very beginning of a series of misadventures that await the crew of the Zephyr. Along with the sexy Jamaican Noah, and the ill-fated Chip, who barely survives a shark attack, Quinn finds she has literally set out on a voyage that will take her to uncharted destinations and embroil her in a taboo love affair. A young woman finds her course on the high seas. Twenty-one-year-old Quinn Anne Carrigan has drifted far from her conservative Boston upbringing during her two years in Miami. When she¿s offered the opportunity, she takes a job as a cook on a yacht being delivered to its new owner in Jamaica. Aboard the 40-foot Zephyr, Quinn instantly feels at home and quickly becomes attached to life at sea and to her three crewmates: the kind, steadfast captain Tommy; the hard-luck Chip; and Noah, the devastatingly sexy Jamaican. Reaching Jamaica, of course, does nothing to quell the drama. McKellar skillfully brings the characters to life, and she clearly knows not only the technical details of living and working on a boat, but also the heady thrill of life at sea. A sexy, thrilling ride -Kirkus Discoveries

Book Description
I could not write for many days. Write! I could not walk or eat or even talk except to moan and wish that I were home or dead or anywhere but here aboard this ship.
Twelve-year-old Celia Snow regrets the day she convinced her parents to allow her to accompany them on her father's whaling expedition in 1856. She thought it would be exciting, exotic, and thoroughly grown-up. Instead, she is terribly seasick and, even worse, homesick. But what's done is done, and Celia knows she cannot expect to see her home on land again for several years.
As the months go by, the excitement of the expedition turns the miserable voyage into a true adventure. On the day Celia sights her first whale and watches the boats row out to the hunt, she realizes that she will see and experience more aboard the Jupiter than most girls will in a lifetime. She will learn to navigate, and she will see the incredible beauty of the Sandwich Islands and feel the biting cold of the Arctic. Best of all, she will fall in love.
While life aboard ship is not easy, Celia learns everything she can about being a captain's daughter. In her heart, though, she still dreams about the day she will return home again. But when disaster strikes, Celia must gather all her courage, strength, and newfound knowledge in one desperate attempt to salvage the expedition and the lives of those she loves.
When we left New Bedford it was cold but clear, a fair wind, Papa said. Mother was in her cabin arranging things, but I wanted to be out on deck. I kept my eye on the sweet shoreline till it disappeared from me, bit by bit, till it was just a line. I held it there in my memory long after it was gone. Papa passed me his spyglass and through it I could see what had been lost before. Sometime in the world maybe there will be a spyglass so strong I could see not just New Bedford, but all the way back home, to you in Eastham, or even as far as our cousins in Salem, and beyond.
Books for the Teen Age 2001 (NYPL)
Customer Reviews:
Extremely dull........2002-07-17
"If Ever I Return Again" felt like a very incomplete book. All the action was clumped at the end, at the end of a two-year voyage. To make it interesting, Celia should have drawn things on the letters she was sending to her cousin, Abigail - since she said she enjoyed drawing. The crewmembers were underdeveloped - we only heard about Mr. Grimes, Isaac, and Nate in great detail. Surely there must have been other men Celia conversed with on the ship, of interest? The relationship between Celia and her mother was very predictable and the mystery of Celia's father's first wife was not really a mystery. I wish there had been more colorful explanations of the ocean, whales, dolphins, the ship, and hurricane. I do not recommend.
more than i expected!.......2001-03-28
I really liked this book. It was a book you keep yourself hanging on. The only fault that I found with it was that Celia was a little too young to be so romance struck. I expected much less when I began reading. I guess it's one of those books that you are happy read!
An excellent book which captures the hearts of readers........2000-07-18
The letters from Celia to Abigail brought out a clear view ofwhat was going on in Celia's life on the ship. The heart-warmingletters but intense plot kept me reading until the end. At some points, I would imagine myself as Celia, writing letters to my dear cousin Abigail while eagerly waiting to get home. And at other times, I would imagine myself as Abigail, reading them. This is a great book by a great author.
history comes to life.......2000-06-30
Demas does a wonderful job of bringing twelve year old Celia back to life from the 1850's though her letters to her cousin about her trials and adventures on her father's whaling ship. Celia is a lively character, warm and loving but wilful. It is enjoyable to see the details of the whalers' struggles with the elements and their luck in the dangerous pursuit of their livelihood. The surprising conclusion to the book is satisfying.
A 19th century girl embarks on a voyage of discovery........2000-06-26
In 1856, twelve-year-old Celia Snow leaves her little brother and a comfortable life in a small New England seaport village to join her father, a sea captain, and her mother on a whaling voyage that could last up to four or five years. Desperatley lonely on the monotanous journey, with whales few and far between, Celia writes long, detailed letters to her cousin Abigail, back home. She describes the daily routine of life on board a whaling ship, a stay on the beautiful Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii), where her mother's difficult pregnancy leads to the birth of a frail baby girl that does not live long, a whaling venture into the Arctic, a first love, and more, as she matures over two long, difficult years filled with hardship, illness, and even death. This book would most likely appeal to girls ages eleven and up who enjoy other historical stories such as the Dear America books. In addition, for another story about a young girl's experiances on a whaling voyage, take a look at Hurricane: Open Seas, 1844, written by Kathleen Duey and Karen A. Bale.

Book Description
When history's most famous pirate, Captain Kidd, was hanged in 1701, he left behind a trail of treasure and treachery that stretched halfway around the world. For undersea explorer Barry Clifford, the biggest prize of all would be to find the Adventure Galley, Kidd's legendary pirate ship. In the world of pirate archaeology, it was the Holy Grail.
With the help of the Discovery Channel, Clifford fields an expedition that includes some of America's top experts in shipwreck recovery. Their goal is to find, identify, and possibly excavate the remains of history's most famous pirate ship. The search takes them to the exotic nation of Madagascar and a tiny island off its rocky coast known to historians as the model for Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. There, amid pirate graveyards, broken porcelain intended for a European royal family, and native rituals that include blood sacrifice, Clifford and his crew find far more than they bargained for. The island's murky harbor is filled with sunken pirate ships, making it difficult to single out the Adventure Galley, and the shores are teeming with people who want the expedition stopped. The team races to find the ship before dark forces expel it from the island -- forces motivated by the same resentment and greed that caused Kidd's downfall.
Return to Treasure Island and the Search for Captain Kidd weaves together two exciting stories: the saga of Captain William Kidd, one of history's most baffling and mysterious figures, and Barry Clifford's obsessive quest to find perhaps the most notorious pirate ship of all time. The result is a tale of treasure and adventure that ends in death -- both Kidd's and, three hundred years later, that of a rival archaeologist who attempts to stop Clifford's expedition.

Great Adventure - Then and Now!.......2003-12-23
This is like getting two books in one! Part of the book tells the fascinating story of Captain Kidd and the other part, the story of Barry Clifford's expediton to Madagascar to recover Kidd's flagship, the Adventure Galley.
With the pictures and all, this book is better than TV.
Should be titled "In Search of Permits".......2003-11-09
Clifford does a good job of alternating between the story of Captain Kidd and his own search for Kidd's flagship. But far too much of the book is dedicated to a long, boring rendition of Clifford's dealings with the local authorities, his rival ship hunter and the resulting phone calls and meetings required to secure permits for the excavation of the ship. Over 90 percent of the modern portion of the book reads like: "Then I called the President's daughter. Then she called me back. Then we met with the minister of the Interior. He told us to come back the next day. So I rode a bike around the island. The next day we called the President's daughter again...." The politics is simply filler so that he wouldn't be selling a 50 page book. To summarize -- there are many books that are a better use of your time.
