Customer Reviews:
awful and outdated.......2003-12-14
I picked up this book and was shocked by the writing and research. Admittedly, this is a book based on science from ten years ago but some chapters are so bad I don't think the information was correct even then. Some chapters may be good, (fingerprints, questioned documents) but do not attempt any subject based on a real science- drug chemistry, DNA analysis, etc. As far as I can tell, these chapters were written by attorneys with no science training. They do not explain concepts very clearly I suspect because they do not really understand them. Save your money. With the current state of CSI madness there has got to be better "forensic science for attorneys/nonscientists" writing being published.
Perfect reference book.......2001-01-21
This book is a necessity for any criminal defense lawyer. This contains the information police use in their training and procedure, as well as what to expect from an expert witness. Outstanding references after each chapter on where to find additional information as well as your own experts. Not as many illustrations as previous editions, but much more up to date material such as DNA testing and the background information so any lay person can understand what the experts are doing.

Book Description
In the midst of his distinguished law school career, James Starrs made an extraordinary leap into the politically fraught, physically arduous business of actually exhuming bodies to solve cold cases that have defied answers for years. Helped by cutting-edge technology as well as the forensic science he had been teaching for decades, he has made important discoveries. These fascinating revelations are dramatically chronicled in A Voice for the Dead.
Starrs's passionate intention is to set the record straight, to right the wrongs done by tall tales and cover-ups, by even the most cherished historical legends. Among the high-profile cases he writes about are Jesse James-are the remains buried in his purported grave really Jesse's? Mary Sullivan-was she, as supposed, a victim of Albert DeSalvo, who confessed, perhaps falsely, to being the Boston Strangler? And the Cold War government scientist who fell to his death from a high floor of a New York hotel-did he jump or was he pushed?
Customer Reviews:
There is a reason why this books sells NEW for one penny!.......2007-03-09
"A voice for the dead"is among the most self-centered,egotistical memoirs I have ever encountered.James E.Starrs, professor of law at George Washington university in Washington,D.C.leaves no doubt that,in his mind at least,he is the very center of the known universe, and that whatever"findings"he may turn up should stand forever and ever,as the very last and final word on the cases involved.Starrs, whose ego apparently knows no limitations, has had this work ghost-written by Katherine Ramsland, which has only added to the over-all negative effect, inasmuchasd Ramsland is a writer best known for the quantity of her output rather than its quality...
In this book,Starrs claims to give the final word on purported 19th century "cannibal"Alfred Packer.claims to have solved all of the mystery surrounding the assassination of Huey Long(and especially the mystery surrounding his alledged assassin,Dr.Carl Weiss),includes a disputatious chapter concerning the "Boston Strangler",and gives his opinion as to who is buried in the grave assigned to notorious 19th century western villian Jesse James...I am surprised that Starrs has not also laid claim to knowledge regarding the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa,or the exact date of the second coming of Jesus Christ, but these"mysteries"and more may yet turn up in some future Starrs volume...
Personally,I do not believe a word of anything that I read in this book...Starrs,and his co-author Ramsland, have presented us with an arrogant memoir..Nothing is as "final"as Starrs investigations claim to be...A touch of humility,an admission that error is always possible, these would have gone a long, long way in making this work palatable..as it is neither is in evidence...
The cases involved are of an historic nature, and ,as they are not run-of-the-mill,"ordinary",or anonymous, one would think that, even despite the professor's over-whelming case of ego, they might still be interesting..WRONG !With Starrs, the mysteries themselves take a back-seat to his cocksure prouncements regarding them.
So,in the end, this book is about self-aggrandizement,with C.S.I.-style forensic science taking a very, very secondary role.
A pleasant read.......2007-01-22
I would say that this book was fun to read from a historical and investigative perspective. Stretches of the book can become a bit tedious when Starrs goes through the legal proceedings, etc. in an attempt to give us all the background. However, I read it all the way through and for the most part was thoroughly entertained. Especially interesting, I thought, was the chapter detailing the "suicide" that was really the murder of a CIA agent in a fall from a ten story hotel room (or so Starrs argues).
I would recommend reading a chapter or two and if it interests you proceed. The good thing is you don't have to read the whole thing if you don't have time, but can instead read any of the cases that may interest you in particular.
Elvis is dead, and so is Starrs' prose.......2006-06-29
James Starrs co-wrote Scientific Evidence in Civil and Criminal Cases, one of the standard single volume reference books in the field. His talents as a memoirist, however, are limited. Voice For The Dead is filled with wooden dialogue and overused metaphors.
Every chapter begins with one or two epigrams, presumably in order to place Starrs' erudition on display. An epigram should serve as a sort of lodestar to guide the reader toward the author's way of thinking. But Starrs trots out some real warhorses, such as, "The evil that men do lives after them,"
from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Countless thousands of English 101 students have used that quote as an epigram for their essays; it tells us nothing special about what Starrs does for a living.
Starrs has a tin ear for dialogue. Even in a clinical discussion, I doubt a forensic scientist would say, in one breath, "...the dead prospectors were all buried in the vicinity of Lake City in spite of a large body of opinion insisting even to this day that they had been interred miles away on the shores of Lake San Cristobel, the terminus of the Gunnison River."
Try saying that, out loud, in a conversational tone.
Starrs tells us about the "legend" about him in his academic circles. He mentions accomplishments outside of forensic science. (Apparently he "bicycled across the breadth of the United States..." Rephrasing it as simply, "bicycled across the United States," would be less redundant, not to mention less florrid.)
Starrs' has failed to notice that the prose style found in 19th century novels doesn't work so well in a 21st professional memoir. Forensic science, since TV's CSI shows became popular, is a topic more people want to read about. But there are other recent books on the subject whose authors seem less self-satisfied about their accomplishments, and more aware that they are writing, not for themselves, but for a 21st century readership.
Excellent Well-Written Book!.......2006-05-03
What a page-turner this is! The main theme in the six chapters of this book is the exhumation of human remains to help settle controversial issues, most of which are of historical value. The book is written in such an engaging style that the pages turn themselves. The cases discussed range from early nineteenth to mid-twentieth century. Although forensic techniques are discussed to an adequate degree, they are not belabored at the expense of other equally important details; thus, the reader is presented with well-balanced information that helps in establishing a good overall perspective of each case. The book's forte is really in the logical and suspenseful way in which each case is developed and presented. At the end, one is left with the feeling of wanting still more cold cases to read about. This excellent work would be of great interest to those who enjoy literature on true crime, history, forensics and unsolved mysteries.
Better Than I Expected.......2006-01-18
After reading some of the other reviews, I almost bailed on buying this book. However, I'm glad I got it. I agree that the writing style and vocabulary is sometimes annoying, and that the author has a giant ego. But it was a good read.

Easy to read & informative;the other side of the coin.......1998-12-10
It's been interesting, especially today, the final day of thecongressional impeachment hearings; to be able to look up thesespecific items on this book and of course, the starr report. Objective interpretation, is not as difficult as you would think, if you considered the $MONEY$ involved. Interesting as it may be to some, and equally exciting or disgusting to others, I know in my heart that no REPUBLICAN is going to walk away clean. They have been the ones to force me to lock out news channels (i.e. Fox) because I didn't appreciate my young sons watching cartoons in the afternoon, with newsbreaks busting in with "B*'s" and the like. In order to throw dirt, you must get dirty; the Republicans have wallowed in it for too long and it is obvious they are not concerned with the conduct of the OIC, our opinions, our hard earned dollars, or the supposed conservative people they represent, like me. If you don't like a dog, fine. If the dog is down, don't be seen kicking him. You look worse than that bad dog. Remember folks, someones watching.

From the author: It is often suggested that reducing deposit insurance would reduce problems of moral hazard in the banking industry. However, little is known about likely effects of proposed reforms on household depositors. This study uses data from the Survey of Consumer Finances to examine the characteristics of household depositors, particularly those with uninsured funds. We find that large depositors tend to have substantial shares of their assets in insured depositories, yet often fail to keep their holdings within insurance limits. Various explanations for these facts are considered. We also simulate the effects of proposed reforms on the pool of uninsured depositors.

From the supplier: This paper develops and tests the implications of optimal consumption behavior with borrowing constraints. The theory shows that liquidity constraints imply a distinctive intertemporal relationship between durable and nondurable goods consumption. Binding liquidity constraints appear as part of an error correction term derived from the long-run cointegrating relationship between durables and nondurables. When liquidity constraints are binding, the error correction term will have predictive power for the future change in nondurable consumption. Empirical tests of the implications using aggregate data support the hypothesis that liquidity constraints, rather than rule-of-thumb behavior, best explain the excess sensitivity of consumption to predictable changes in income. Book Description
Winter looms in this place of icy splendor near the top of the world-chilling a heart already frozen by hatred and cold dreams of revenge?
Experience and adversity have made the storyteller Chakliux a wise and powerful hunter and a man of great respect. But a tender heart is his weakness. In his village lives the beautiful Aqamdax for whom he yearns, though she is mated to a cruel and dangerous tribesman she does not love. It is Chakliux she runs to under a clear, moonlit sky while the village sleeps. But there can be no future for them together until a curse upon their people has been transcended. And then there is K'os, the healing woman--maddened and embittered by the outrage she was forced to endure years earlier--outcast and enslaved by the leader of the enemy tribe against whom she has sworn vengeance. To enact her savage and terrible justice, she will use--and destroy--anyone, if necessary, including the boy-turned-man she rescued in infancy and raised as her son: Chakliux, the storyteller.
Return now to a frozen land in a remarkable time eighty centuries past, when the spirit was tested--and strengthened--by the cruelties of nature and the great mysteries of life.

Good read.......2005-06-01
Found it confusing at first. It seemed to drift away from the original story leaving questions unanswered but this book did become very interesting! It kept me guessing and ended up being a two-day read because I couldn't put it down. It was also kind of confusing that this book suddenly included a different group of story tellers as the people telling the story your reading. This pattern is continued in the next book and becomes more clear as to why the books are writen as they are. Highly recommend anything by Harrison!
You Can Lose Yourself In This Book.......2001-05-25
I didn't realize that this was the second book in a trilogy when I started it (My fault. It was clearly stated on the front of the book). That may be why I found the numerous characters a bit confusing at first. But there is a list of characters and the villages they come from at the back of the book and that was a big help. I also appreciated the glossary of plants and herbs that were mentioned in the story. Despite the fact that I was unfamiliar with these characters and their past history with each other, the story was easy to follow. I found the details of life in primitive times, in the wilds of Alaska, mesmerizing. The suspense of what was going to happen to these characters kept me turning pages well into the wee hours. It isn't often that I find a book that so involves me, that the rest of the world just disappears for awhile. This is one of those books.
Ms Harrison continues to hold your attention.......2000-08-05
As with the previous books I have read by this author, she has the ability to keep your attention and spin out an interesting tale and leave you waiting for her next publication.
Harrison continues to write top notch material.......2000-08-05
As with the other books by this author that I have read, she continues to spell bind and "spin" a good yarn. She has the ability to make you feel as if your in the story looking on.
Wonderful Read!.......2000-05-26
This book is a great sequel to "Song of the River". It is very well written and so engrossing that I finished it in just 2 days! Her characters have depth and reality- you can relate with them and their joys and sorrows. One of the reasons I like to read Sue Harrison's books is for her true potrayals of human behaviors with their strenghs and their weaknesses. Too many times authors write their characters as being "perfect" with nothing but positive things happening to them. Sue's stories are beautiful and believable. You will feel like you know her characters and will miss them when you have to put the book down! I am anxiously awaitng to read the third book in her trillogy! Thank you Sue!

Book Description
First a prisoner, now a slave--so far from her heart's cry for freedom.
But nothing threatens Kwelik's dream as much as the whisper of forbidden love and the question of whether she'll be brave enough to stand against the fire of her fears. When the choice comes, will she sacrifice everything to find the freedom of following God... even when He leads her into the flames?
Jonathan Grant fled his privileged English life to forge a new start on the American frontier. Yet the past that he so desperately wants to leave behind continues to haunt him. He searches for meaning through love, through war--and still freedom eludes him.
In a time of hope and betrayal, England and France are fighting on American soil, using the colonists and Indians as their soldiers. Kwelik and Jonathan will be caught up in the conflict; their lives intertwined, then torn apart...
All in the search for freedom

Incredible! And I don't use that term lightly...........2004-01-12
What can I say about this book? It's so awesome...I almost can't describe it. When I started reading it in the beginning, I wasn't too excited. I thought it was going to be another one of those pointless "Christian" romance novels where the girl believes in God but never even thinks about Him until the very end when she's got the guy, who she managed somehow to convert, and then they both sappily thank God. But this was so different. The love story, while still there, melted into the background of Kwelik's extreme faith. I also love the fact that she doesn't do Christian platitudes...like,"Oh yeah, I'm going through all this horrible stuff, but the Lord will take care of it" Don't get me wrong, the Lord does get you through unimaginable things, but in the mean time, it still hurts. You can really feel Kwelik's agony and torment, but she still trusts in God. I also love the part about White Wolf. It really shows just how much bitterness and unforgiveness can completely change who you are inside, until you're someone no one can recognize. This book is fantastic!
Make time in your summer for this book!.......2001-06-13
This is an incredibly well-written book that is nearly impossible to put down. The author magically transports you through time and makes you truly feel you are a part of that time and place (which is a trick when you live in the desert). I am very glad this is part of a series. I can't wait to read more from this talented author.
You won't want to put this down!.......2001-05-18
Wow,this was a great book. I'm eagerly waiting the next in the series. Marlo crafted a fantastic story interweaving history and religion into a powerful prose. I could not put the book down. Her artistry reminds me of Mitchner. I enjoyed this so much I bought another and donated it to the library. ~ Hurry up with the next book!!
Prepare To Step Back In Time.......2001-05-11
Schalesky writes with such powerful prose that the reader not only believes the story, we are swept back in time to the early 1700's to experience it. What is the cry for freedom in a land that we today take for granted? What is the cry for freedom that every person feels within their life on a spiritual level? Schalesky weaves these questions into a story of historical accuracy and with characters who live and breath upon the page. As both a historical fiction and contemporary fiction reader, I will definitely return to Schalesky's books again and again. A reminder of our nation's foundation and with insights that touch us today -- a definite must read!
I Was Hooked!.......2000-09-28
I really enjoyed Cry Freedom. I do not have much time to read but once I started this great book I couldn't put it down. I was instantly drawn to the characters and the excitement of the story. I appreciate the authors ability to bring the past to life with such historical accuracy. I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES!
