Book Description

She charmed America with her smart, likable, down-to-earth personality as she campaigned for her husband, then vice-presidential candidate John Edwards. She inspired millions as she valiantly fought advanced breast cancer after being diagnosed only days before the 2004 election. She touched hundreds of similarly grieving families when her own son, Wade, died tragically at age sixteen in 1996. Now she shares her experiences in Saving Graces, an incandescent memoir of Edwards’ trials, tragedies, and triumphs, and of how various communities celebrated her joys and lent her steady strength and quiet hope in darker times.

Edwards writes about growing up in a military family, where she learned how to make friends easily in dozens of new schools and neighborhoods around the world and came to appreciate the unstinting help and comfort naval families shared. Edwards’ reminiscences of her years as a mother focus on the support she and other parents offered one another, from everyday favors to the ultimate test of her own community’s strength—their compassionate response to the death of the Edwards’ teenage son, Wade, in 1996. Her descriptions of her husband’s campaigns for Senate, president, and vice president offer a fascinating perspective on the groups, great and small, that sustain our democracy. Her fight with breast cancer, which stirred an outpouring of support from women across the country, has once again affirmed Edwards’ belief in the power of community to make our lives better and richer.

Felt this book artfully expressed loss. It included the gammet of feelings and expressions one might endure while experiencing loss of any type. Hopefully she also found solace in teaching us as well as finding herself. Would recommend to anyone because at some point, we all experience loss. Hopefully not as Elizabeth Edwards did.

5 out of 5 stars My honor to read this life journey of E. Edwards.......2007-09-19

The book is a gift of her use of the English language. The use of words, the integrity of the writer shines through. She uses her gift to share her pain, pain many of us have felt but could not have put into words with the artistry that is just part of her. It is rare for a person to be able to put their soul in paper, but she has. Thank you, Elizabeth. Saving Graces: Finding Solace and Strength from Friends and Strangers

Great book, well written. It makes you realize you can overcome any obstacle in life with family and support from friends.

Eliabeth Edwards writes with painful honesty and hope. She is an extrordinary woman and this glimpse into her soul is a wonderful read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!.......2007-09-13

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I got a whole new insight into the Edwards family. Elizabeth didn't shy away from the pain caused by the untimely death of their wonderful son, Wade, or her initial experience of her breast cancer treatment. There is also an additional chapter in this paperback book regarding the return of her cancer. Her humor cracked me up several times, and I was so inspired by the whole family. They are certainly a strong family, both Elizabeth and John come from strong stock, and it shows. I for one, given the chance, will vote for John Edwards for President. I think he's the one we need to lead this country ahead and away from our current administration's boggling.

Through down-home storytelling, Reba McEntire offers her fans a glimpse into her personal life, as well as a healthy dose of traditional, God-lovin' values. Like a quilt, McEntire's book of country comfort is stitched from real-life material--little scraps of wisdom that miraculously piece together into a heartfelt mosaic.

Right from the start McEntire establishes herself as a "modern country woman," able to explore a spider's web with her son as deftly as she can explore the World Wide Web. Herein lies the strength of McEntire's writing, her ability to apply the old, country traditions to the more contemporary values that her readers are likely to identify with. Chapter titles such as "Tougher Than You Think," "A Mama's Way," and "Let a Smile be Your Umbrella ... but Don't Forget Your Raincoat" all allude to the grit and honey texture of this loving book of back porch inspiration. --Gail Hudson

    Book Description

Whether you read it for instant warmth or lasting inspiration, Comfort from a Country Quilt is a book that will touch your life and make your spirits soar like the sweet high notes of a Reba McEntire song.

In a dazzling career that spans more than two decades, Reba McEntire has established herself as one of the hardest-working and most successful entertainers of our time. She is a country music superstar who has sold more than 40 million records, one of the highest-grossing concert performers of the decade, and a trailblazing businesswoman who established her own multimedia entertainment corporation.

Yet Reba has still managed to become one of the rare celebrities who is also beloved by her millions of fans for the way she lives her life, for successfully balancing the demands of career and family, for competing in show business without sacrificing her values, and for managing to "keep it country" while keeping up with the times. She has done so, in large part, by drawing wisdom and strength from the precious traditions of her country past, finding inspiring new relevance in old-fashioned values.

Now, in a deeply personal, "back-porch conversation" of a book, Reba shares a generous helping of her life experiences. "I hope some of the things I've gone through can make it just a little easier for the next person, because life is supposed to be about making the path a little gentler for the people traveling behind you."

Reba writes about the roles a modern country woman tries to fulfill, roles as many and varied as the fabric pieces of an heirloom quilt. Facing the challenges of being a wife, mother, stepmother, daughter, sister, performer, executive, community member, and Christian, Reba shows how she has coped by carrying forward lessons and a guiding spirit from her roots as a ranch girl growing up in Chockie, Oklahoma, as well as from the powerful heritage of classic country music. Rather than proving quaint and stale, Reba demonstrates again and again the ways that you can make traditional values remain fresh and vital in your search for a fulfilling life today.

Comfort from a Country Quilt is a book of wisdom and encouragement and a celebration of what is true and lasting in our lives, a gift for yourself and for those you love to cherish.

Warm and snuggly -- like the woman herself. I'm glad Reba found the time to write this book. It's as though she's watching my family from outside in the bushes. Which I think would be illegal, so I hope she's not. Anyway, thank you Reba for changing my life, by changing the way I use blankets. You're No. 1 in my book and your book's No. 1 with me.

In From Strength to Strength, Sara Henderson tells her life story, from her birth in September of 1936 up through September of 1991, 55 remarkable years later. It's a life worth telling, and worth reading about. And though the events of Henderson's life are by turns dramatic, tragic, and inspiring, her personality comes through as down-to-earth, straightforward, and sincere. She could be any one of us, a normal person caught up in a whirlwind of a life that demanded more than she thought she had to give, but who ultimately surprised herself and her community with her tenacity and resolve.

As the title indicates, Sara sees strength and perseverance as important themes in her life, and much of her autobiography is spent detailing events that helped develop or exhibited those essential characteristics. With four older brothers, she had ample opportunities to learn how to stick up for herself. Other formative tenacity-building experiences included her short but successful tennis competition career (at 14 she was picked to represent New South Wales in the under-15 schoolgirls team) and the car crash at 19 that curtailed her dream of winning Wimbledon. She lay flat on her back for eight months while her bones healed, and then confounded the doctors' predictions by not only learning to walk again but resuming tennis, too.

Sara got a job and for a few years lived a sedately rewarding life. Then Charles English Henderson III entered her world, and everything changed. Swept off her feet by his charm, charisma, and attentions, she wed him within the year, and her life became a tempest of romantic champagne and strawberry evenings, furious recriminations over slights and broken promises, and near-death sailing trips through the eye of a hurricane. They lived for a while on a yacht in Hong Kong's harbor, and their first two girls were born in Manila. Then, after five years abroad, Charlie decided to close his failing overseas business and open a cattle station in Australia's Northern Territory. "The station," writes Sara, "was two hundred miles southwest of Darwin by air, a staggering five hundred by road, if you could call it a road. Our nearest neighbours were about one hundred miles away."

Throughout her memoir, Henderson's tone is from the heart rather than polished or sophisticated. The prose is not honed, and it is clear that the woman behind the words is not a professional writer. However, her humor and personality come through as clearly as the story she sets out to tell. What she refers to as the "madcap happenings of my life" would be deemed tragic by most, while to her, they seem in retrospect to have been the means by which she achieved her character and stature. Unlike other adventure tales, From Strength to Strength will not make you long to experience all that the author experienced. But she does emerge as a remarkable woman, and the components of her autobiography make for a compelling story and an inspirational read, if not necessarily an enviable life. --Stephanie Gold

    4 out of 5 stars A great insight.......2002-02-05

Whether you are an Australian City Slicker or from another part of our planet this book will delight. Henderson provides a great intimate look into her life - one not so dissimilar to others in the outback of Australia. You will learn how life really is in a remote and desolate world of outback Australia. You are sure to sympathise with Henderson and the lot of others in a similar situation.

3 out of 5 stars I spent three months in Outback Australia........2001-04-09

Australia is my hobby, and I lived in a half dozen towns between Adelaide and Mackay covering two years. If you like reading Australian authors and stories, this is the book for you. If this is your first Australian book, you'll probably give it about a B-, because although Sara Henderson's life was exciting to her, she left out most of the juicy details which would have made it a compelling read. For example, many times she described her day by naming the cities she visited without giving us the nitty gritty. I've read four of her books. Unless I missed something, Sara Henderson never had a date in the 20 years following her husband's death. I admire her accomplishments in life, but they didn't make her an author. About the Strength series, read one and you've read them all.

5 out of 5 stars From Strength to Strength.......2000-05-25

Thankfully we get to find out what happens after Strength to Strength in Sara's next two books in this series about her life in the outback, The Strength in Us All, and most recently, The Strength of our Dreams. I love her stories peppered with humor as she moves through life with such an indomitable spirit. I wish these books were easier to find in the U.S.

5 out of 5 stars The story of a women with intestinal fortitude and drive........2000-04-28

Sara Henderson demonstrates an inter strength that only people dream about. She is a survivor from the start and must save her ranch from foreclosure and deal with the daily harshness of the out back environment. With an undying love for her girls, her ranch, and the people whom she works with side by side she must pull herself up by the "boot straps" and move forward. Having the strength to go on in spite of the hard ships she faces in her life and in a land that is unforgiving. Her story is moving, funny, and full of inspiration. I just hope her other books come back into print someday soon.

Read the book, but also take time to research what has been going on while she has been on watch as the Harris County ME. I wouldn't say that her management skills are something that would inspire me.

4 out of 5 stars Positive and Inspiring.......2001-05-19

Inner strength is something that gets us through our darkest hours and days, and faith is at the core of this strength. In Dr. Joye M. Carter's autobiography "My Strength Comes from Within" she shows how her inner strength and faith led her to achieving her goals. Dr. Carter is the first black female to become a Chief Medical Examiner in the United States. She first held this position in Washington , D.C. and is presently employed as the Chief Medical Examiner for Harris County, Texas.

Dr. Carter details the very rough road that she had to take to gain the title of Chief Medical Examiner. Growing up and throughout her schooling when she told others that she wanted to be a forensic pathologist, they ridiculed her or told her that she would never be able to do it. Fortunately Dr. Carter realized that it really did not matter what other people said or thought, what mattered is that she believed in herself and God, and with these beliefs anything is possible.

Dr. Carter's job as a Medical Examiner exposes her to death on a daily basis, in her career she has seen the results of what has happened to people when they hit her examining table. Even though her patients are dead, she takes her time with them and she treats them with respect and dignity. Dr. Carter's strong faith guides her through her job daily.

"My Strength Comes from Within" is a very positive and inspiring book. It gives the reader inspiration and a guide to achieving his or her dreams or goals. The only real issue that I had with the book is that several words and phrases seemed too be overused. A good example would be Dr. Carter's title of Chief Medical Examiner, it is basically on every page of the book and I felt that was a little much. Otherwise I enjoyed the book and gave it a RAW rating of 3.5.

I was able to secure an advanced copy of this wonderful book. I read it cover to cover. I advise anyone with teenage children who may be having a hard time figuring out their place in this world, to buy this book.

Dr.Carter's book is enlightening and positive. The book shows you that no matter what you want to accomplish in this world, it is possible if you only put your mind to it.

Don't ever let someone tell you that you can't accomplish something, because you can!

The first sentence of Larry Bird's candid post-player memoir begins blandly enough: "On August 18, 1992, I announced my retirement from the Boston Celtics." It's the one that follows--"It was one of the happiest days of my life"--that sets the tone for the book. Most stars have to be pulled off center stage, but as Bird Watching makes clear, the former Celtic legend who returned home to eventually coach the Indiana Pacers is certainly a rare bird. He's not afraid to ruffle feathers. And he's not afraid to tell his truth.

Perhaps the most striking revelations concern his heart. On top of the back pain that plagued him through much of his career, from time to time Bird experienced the feeling--and disorienting flush--of an irregular heartbeat, which he kept hidden from the Celtics. Even now, in the stress-filled world of coaching, Bird has almost passed out on the bench a couple of times--but he remains a fierce competitor. "I'm not going to be stupid about this heart condition, but I'm not going to live my whole life in fear of this thing either. If it goes, it goes."

Bird Watchingspends virtually no time with Bird the player; he's not one for looking back. He's more interested in explaining his evolution and thinking as a coach, examining the current state of the NBA, and picking apart the Pacer's disastrous 1999 playoff loss to the Knicks. He does, however, reminisce about his amazing connection to Magic Johnson, comparing it to the bond between Ali and Frazier. "I knew it was going to be like that forever after I played him in college for the national championship," Bird writes. "I never came up against anyone, other than Magic, who could challenge me mentally. Magic always took me to the limit." From Bird, it's hard to imagine a more heartfelt compliment. --Jeff Silverman

          5 out of 5 stars Good read.......2006-10-21

This is a follow-up to Bird's book Drive. It takes up at the end of his playing career and focuses on his post-playing career. He goes into the Olympic experience and the back pain that ended his career long before his skills had eroded.

He goes into detail about his figurehead jobs with the Boston Celtics and what ultimately led him to leave and eventually take up the head coaching job with the Indiana Pacers. Most of the book revolves around his first year coaching: he dispels myths and propaganda about his coaching and his life and h explains how he selected his coaches and his coaching philosophy, and his team.

The book was just a very enjoyable read.

          Bird Watching (by Larry Bird)
Reviewer: Known as one the of the best basketball players to have ever stepped foot onto a NBA court, Larry Bird's book will teach you many things about himself as well as the game. Larry brings the reader into some of his most personal things that he has never shared with anyone. He gives you a first class view on all of his experiences of playing professional basketball in the NBA. He shows you the downsides, positives, but most of all the victories. You'll find out first hand all of the injuries Larry has encountered that until now he has kept as a secret.

Through this book Larry will share with you information of his hometown, French Lick, Indiana. You'll learn about his family, about his fathers' death and the way up to his mothers' death. Larry talks about more than just his parents he introduces you to his wife, Dinah and his two children, Conner and Mariah.

Larry will walk you through his entire career. All the way from his high school career, where one of his favorite coaches, Jim Jones coached him. Jim Jones was the coach who really taught Larry all of the fundamentals of the game. Larry didn't seem to have that many coaches that he didn't care for. Larry is also a very hard worker, he really appreciated it when coaches made him run hard. He believed that every basketball player should be conditioned to play the game. Then later on in his career when he ends up becoming a coach he incorporates all of the coaching skills that he has gathered from his previous coaches and uses them on his players. He brings you through some of his most exciting journeys and some of his most famous friends and players.

Just about everything in this book flows together. Larry explains everything that you know about him and a lot of things that you have no idea of. The only thing that I disliked about the book is that none of it was put in order from the beginning of his life to the end of his career, it seemed to jump around a lot. Another big thing was that each chapter was long in itself, but it seemed to talk about the same thing and just ramble on and on. For example one of Larry's biggest problems was his back and he talked about it for a whole chapter then he talked about it more in a few different chapters. Although there some very good and interesting chapters in the book that taught me many things about Larry Bird.

Overall I thought the book was very good, but somewhat long for me, but if you read often then it will be just fine. I would recommend this to anyone who has a great liking of either Larry Bird or basketball. You also need to have a pretty good understanding of basketball to be able to understand some of the topics Larry teaches you.

Bird Watching, an autobiography by Larry Bird, is a story for any lover of sports. Bird Watching is a detailed account of the life of Larry Bird, from his NBA career with the Boston Celtics to his coaching position with the Indiana Pacers. After reading the first page of the book, the reader realizes there is more to this NBA legend than meets the eye.
Unlike most professional basketball players, Larry Bird never regretted the day he left the NBA and even says that the day he retired was "one of the happiest days of [his] life." Faced with chronic back problems and an irregular heart, Bird was happy to see the day when he no longer had to endure the pain of playing the sport he loved more than anything. Coming from the man himself, the story describes Bird's life in a detailed and personal manner. From beginning to end, the reader easily notices the uniqueness of this man's character and not only sees, but feels the impact this incredible man left on so many fellow players, fans, and loved ones.
I thought this was a great book, especially for a sports fan. I felt that for a sport's book, it was particularly well written. The author's style allows the reader to get a personal glimpse of the life of Larry Bird and causes the reader to feel as if they knew this NBA legend. Because of the story's subject, the author employs very few literary devices. However, the author uses many similes in describing Bird's injuries, allowing the reader to appreciate Bird's choice in leaving the NBA. The book lacks an overall dominant theme, but simply wishes to convey the story of one of the greatest and most unique basketball players of all time.

This book explores the post playing days of arguably the best forward to ever play the game of basketball. Bird recaps his days of playing in the olympics, his time in the front office of the Celtics, and his coaching days of the Pacers. I have been a huge Bird fan since I was a kid, yet I never knew much about him, except for what I saw on the court. This book gave me a lot of insight into Bird's dynamic work ethic as both player and coach and showed how he was able to use his winning attitude to take the Pacers from 39 wins to 58 wins in one season as well as to the infamous clash with Jordan and the Bulls in the 98 Eastern Conference Finals. Bird also reveals his thoughts about the NBA today. If you want to know about the legend that is Larry Bird, you should read this book.

          5 out of 5 stars Celtics Rule.......2003-01-08

I think that this book is good for those who are fans of the Boston Celtics and that of the NBA. This book is a biography; it has a little bit of everything. With a foreword by Pat Riley (Head Coach of the Miami Heat) the book could not more complete.

This book begins in a small town in Indiana. Larry Bird was a star basketball player for his high school and the rest of the state. Larry left high school to go to Indiana University on a full basketball scholarship and play for the one and only Bobby Knight. Larry was not on the campus very long before he became overwhelmed by the great amount of students. Larry would then leave the school and transfer to Indiana State University. After college Larry entered himself in to the NBA draft and was selected 6th overall by the Boston Celtics.
