Paints the true picture of writing and the writers' life........2007-08-16
Heather Sellers presents writing as what it really is. She gives you the truths about writing. She answers questions like: what does it take to be a writer? Is writing really for you? Are you willing to write badly, and then keep going? What is a true writer's life like? In chapter 24, she dispels the theories that writing a book will instantly make you rich and famous, and gives her own personal example of some of her feelings right after her first book was published.
"But many writers nurture a dream that is false. You will get published. But it is unlikely that publication will solve any problems you have -blocks, money, habits, confidence or writing ability." And, she tells us that you should write because it's what you want to do, what you have to do. Even if you're not going to get paid for it, or famous from it.
Divided into 3 parts and 30 chapters, you can read this from beginning to end, or you can open it up anywhere and just start reading. The Table Of Contents is really nice, because, not only does it give you the title of the chapter, but it tells you what the chapter deals with. There's a wide variety of useful writing topics covered.
This is on my top five favorite books on writing. My book is bookmarked in several places and heavily underlined. The signs of a loved book. This is the perfect blend of writing advice and personal exploration as a writer.
Page After Page:Different than most writing books.......2007-05-12
In Page After Page, Heather Sellers offers untraditional, but sound advice for writers. I think she gets down to the nitty gritty and barebone honesty of issues which writers want to talk about, but often don't know how to bring up with other writrs. Sellers pinpoints issues with writing which we know are there, but can't quite name.
Sellers'flighty "I'm forever a college student" style is annoying to me. Somehow, for me, it doesn't fit with the sage writing advice she offers. (Maybe it's just a personal thing.) I think the book is definitely worth a read. I also ordered Chapter After Chapter and am eager to get started on it.
Page after Page.......2006-08-24
An encouragement to treat writing as your lover - a passionate and inspiring book that encourages writers not to give up. Brimming with useful exercises to help you get started and keep going, this book is a must have if you have any doubts about yourself as a writer.
Motivation page after page.......2006-08-05
With straight talk as though the author wrote the book just for me, I found this to be the motivation I need to get back to writing and making it a priority in my life. Not just thinking about it daily, but doing something towards my goal. The excercises are simple and fun and help get the writer writing! In an easy to read, conversational style the author makes it clear that you don't need to sit for hours everyday to be a "writer". You just need to set aside even 10-20 minutes a day and get that pen to the paper. Even reading books, lots of different types of books, can help in achieving your goal. Most of all you have to really want to do it and make it a priority in your life. To make time for it. The most valuable advice she gave was stop talking about it. Really, stop talking about it and take the time and energy you are wasting talking about it and DO something. Write!
Motivating and fun - not just for writing.......2006-02-11
This is a great book for a number of reasons. First, it's fun to read. Ms. Seller's writing style is enjoyable, and she has kept the chapters very manageable and compartmentalized. I can read a section, get inspired, then put it down for a day or two while I do the exercises, which are the next good thing about the book.
At the end of each chapter are exercises that are often very different from typical writing exercises. They seem a little more inspired or thoughtful. For instance, the one I really like is 10 minutes of writing, with a pencil or marker because they're slower than ball point pens, on unlined paper, on a topic using no adjectives or adverbs.
Another thing I really like about this book is that a lot of the exercises she has in there to motivate you for writing can be applied to other areas of life as well. Just substitute in your topic of choice (for me it's programming) and work the exercise to apply to that area. It really is a very good book, and well worth the purchase.

Before&AfterPageDesign-Great Book!.......2007-09-30
This is a great and helpful book for graphic designers, beginning and advanced. It is a thin book, paperback, not heavy to carry around with you. It's also easy to read and understand. Also a great price/value. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about design. :) :)
Dated but Useful.......2007-07-24
Would rather recommend their beautiful magazine and/or PDF publications which come out irregularly. Every issue is a treat. Take caution however; sadly their customer service treats subscription problems with contempt.
Great tips........2007-06-29
I subscribe to the before & after website and decided to buy this book based on my satisfaction with that membership. The book has great design information. It's so helpful to have the here's what it looked like before and here's how it could be better aspects. It really helps me in my design work.
New to design?.......2006-07-09
This book is wonderful for designers new to design. It teaches you the basics rules and gives plenty of examples (before and after) of how to arrange elements and type.
Very "eye catching" solutions! I am an illustrator & this is a wonderful way to enhance and round out my creativity in my illustrations. A definite must for someone new.
Good material for the starting designer.......2006-02-27
Good book, teaches you the basics of desing this book should be purchased by people that are barely starting.

Book Description
The Duke of Illyria hosts a wedding party in his palace garden. But which fair maiden is destined to become his bride? This comedy of errors is filled with wit and laughs. Shakespeare's immortal dramas are now available in illustrated form for classroom use! This revolutionary way of introducing the timeless comedies and tragedies of the Bard of Avon combines the art form of the graphic novel with written passages taken directly from Shakespeare's texts. Children first studying Shakespeare are sometimes intimidated by the difficulty of his language. They will often miss the excitement and suspense in his story lines and the fascination of the wonderful characters he has created. Approaching his plays in the form of graphic-novel-style picture stories, supplemented with excerpts from the original dialogue, can be a young student's important first step in truly understanding and appreciating Shakespeare's masterpieces. Preceding the action of each play, these books offer brief summaries explaining what the play is all about, followed by illustrated casts of characters, each character shown with a brief descriptive caption. Supplementing each title in this series is a separately available teacher's guide that suggests topics for classroom discussion and advises on imaginative activities that fit the classroom environment and coincide with the five acts of each play.
Book Description
They are nine women with much in common--all German speaking, all poets, all personal witnesses to the horror and devastation that was World War II. Yet, in this deeply moving collection, each provides a singularly personal glimpse into the effects of war on language, place, poetry, and womanhood.
After Every War is a book of translations of women poets living in Europe in the decades before and after World War II: Rose Ausländer, Elisabeth Langgässer, Nelly Sachs, Gertrud Kolmar, Else Lasker-Schüler, Ingeborg Bachmann, Marie Luise Kaschnitz, Dagmar Nick, and Hilde Domin. Several of the writers are Jewish and, therefore, also witnesses and participants in one of the darkest occasions of human cruelty, the Holocaust. Their poems, as well as those of the other writers, provide a unique biography of the time--but with a difference. These poets see public events through the lens of deep private losses. They chart the small occasions, the bittersweet family ties, the fruit dish on a table, the lost soul arriving at a railway station; in other words, the sheer ordinariness through which cataclysm is experienced, and by which life is cruelly shattered. They reclaim these moments and draw the reader into them.
The poems are translated and introduced, with biographical notes on the authors, by renowned Irish poet Eavan Boland. Her interest in the topic is not abstract. As an Irish woman, she has observed the heartbreaking effects of violence on her own country. Her experience has drawn her closer to these nine poets, enabling her to render into English the beautiful, ruminative quality of their work and to present their poems for what they are: documentaries of resilience--of language, of music, and of the human spirit--in the hardest of times.

A new look at forgotten poets.......2004-10-23
The translations in After Every War are lovely and lyrical. The poems are translated from the German. It is interesting that several of the poets were German-speaking Jewish poets who faced great hardships. I particularly liked the work of Else Lasker-Schuler (1869-1945)
"Sweet angels, I have eaten
such bitter bread. push open
The door of heaven. For me, for now --

The best of the best on the 60s in Southeast Asia........2001-09-05
"Page After Page" may well be the best memoir yet written by the war correspondents and photographers who reported from Southeast Asia, and is certainly by far the most humorous. I have never been able to decide whether Tim Page's most remarkable skill was capturing a scene in a photograph or in words. This memoir takes the reader through Page's accident-prone childhood, his misadventures in his travels through Burma, Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia, on to the war in Vietnam. Not a bad life for a guy who once hustled "Ever Retty" flashlight bulbs out of a canal boat in Thailand! Page's loyalty to his deceased colleagues is revealed in his accounts of his "high times" with Sean Flynn and Dana Stone and others who all either lost their lives or their hearts in Southeast Asia... the list goes on and on, page after page.
Which is better the Movie or the Book.......1999-12-05
I must admit that I did not read the book, but recently I saw the movie "Frankie's House" which was made by Australian TV and I think it is one of the best movies I ever saw, only ..... I missed the last 15 minutes on the tape. The story is real, the people are real and the character Tim Page did not get out of my mind for days. To forget the risks while making the pictures, not to loose human feelings, still to care, congratulations Tim James, I hope that I ever will have the possibility to get the book or the video
Product Description
Legendary guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, Hubert Sumlin, T-Bone Walker, Johnnie Winter, Albert King, Freddie King, and Chuck Berry are known to all blues fans for their remarkable soloing abilities.
But the complete blues guitarist must do more than shine in the solo spotlight. And that is why every great soloist is also a great fill-in player.
Tasteful fill-in licks support and inspire the singer while adding fire and drive to the performance. For example, Blind Lemon Jeffersons string-snapping fill-ins provided the perfect complement for his rough-hewn blues songs. Both Louis Armstrong and Lester Young seemed to talk to the singer with their finely-crafted, jazzy fill-ins. And Henry Sunflower Vestines stinging, buzzsaw fill-ins never failed to drive his Canned Heat bandmates into a psychedelic frenzy.
This book is accompanied by a user-friendly split-track CD allows you to sit in with a professional blues band while you learn to play blues fills behind a great singer, Charles Adkins. The Heat-Seeking Missile Blues Band is heard on the left channel; the fill-in licks are isolated on the right channel.
This is not just another book of abstract how do I use these licks in real life? licks, but a collection of solid musical ideas that can be applied to thousands of real songs. Another fine contribution from Red Dog Music Books, designed for the early intermediate-to intermediate guitarist. Some of the licks are accessible to highly motivated near-beginners, and the book is an excellent resource for teachers.
Product Description
A turnaround lick is one that is played in the last two bars of of chord progression; for example measures 11-12 in a twelve-bar blues. The 101 authentic blues turnarounds in this book are in the Chicago, or urban, blues style popularized by Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, and carried on by Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan; the licks can be applied to thousands of real songs. Each lick is written in notation and tablature, and recorded on the companion CD. The material is suitable for an ambitious beginner, intermediate player, blues band guitarist, or pro reference. It is an indispensible book filled with useful information. The book is supplemented with lessons/discussions on the following: Typical blues progression; Turnaround licks and progressions (defined); Typical blues turnaround chord progressions; The 12/8 blues shuffle; Creative projects for the music student; Additional blues progressions. Best of all, this innovative Red Dog Music book from veteran author Larry McCabe costs less than one private music lesson!
Product Description
This superb Red Dog Music Book and CD allows you to learn/play slide guitar fill-ins while sitting in with a crisply recorded blues band and singer. The licks are clearly written in standard notation and tablature, and the companion CD contains all 101 licks, which are applicable to countless blues songs. A guide to symbols and several helpful fretboard diagrams are included. The licks are recorded on electric guitar but can also be played on acoustic. Overall, a very fine book that will provide unlimited learning and enjoyment. Many slide guitar books are confusing because they try to cover too many tunings. Everything here is in open E. Songs include standards such as Joe Turner Blues, St. Louis Blues, Sportin Life Blues, House of the Rising Sun, Midnight Special, along with several new songs written to standard blues changes. Like Hound Dog Taylor, J.B. Hutton, and Elmore James? Then you will like this book.
Book Description
Pronounced as the greatest goalscoring talent since Jimmy Greaves, 17-year old Robbie Fowler was immediately catapulted to fame and fortune. The thin, baby-faced Toxteth lad, who had trampled the same streets as the rioters, was now a millionaire, an idol and inspiration to every kid who kicked a football. Yet his incredible potential was never quite realized. Injuries and persistent rumours of drug abuse and depression meant that he never became the world-beater so many predicted. This is a fascinating and unbelievably frank insight into the beautiful game, and a candid account of an incredible career, taking us behind the closed doors of professional football to expose what really happens at both club and international level.
Customer Reviews:
Robbie Fowler's Autobiography.......2007-09-07
It's an interesting book written together with a ghost writer, but I think it would have been far better without all the effing and blinding which
if read by youngsters could have a very negative affect.
But as I am a fan of Robbie's and was sorry to see him leave Liverpool F.C. for the first time it still makes interesting reading learning for the first time about the streets of Toxteth and being a working class kid who has made it really good.
I hope he eventually writes a sequel whenever he decides to retire from full time football and believe he has in in him to make a first class coach and manager.
God moves in mysterious ways.......2006-01-29
Robbie Fowler is the God of Liverpool. Anyone who has watched his goals in a Liverpool jersey will tell you, in an era when you've the enimagtic Eric Cantona, the powerful Alan Shearer and, to a certain extent, a "prolific" Andy Cole ruling the headlines, that Robbie Fowler just happens to have a little more of that midas touch in front of goal.
Being a Liverpool fan and a fond observer of Fowler's goals, I was no doubt devastated when he was shipped out of Anfield almost five years ago. When news of his autobiography were released, I told myself that I'll buy it, regardless whether I'll read it or not. I mean, footballers' autobiographies are usually crap, full of ________ (insert vulgarity) and a glorified excuse to make some money for the subject.
After reading the book over the span of a few hours, it didn't surprise me that Fowler: My Autobiography justifies my perhaps cruel perception. But then again, it also proves to be quite an enjoyable read, because it covers some interesting issues that I'd really like to know about. You know. Houllier. Hoddle. Eileen Drewery (is this how you spell that? I'm sorry I couldn't be bothered to check).
I also particular enjoy the early moments of the book, even if they were rather slow-paced. Fowler (or his ghost writer) attempted to explain his origins, and while I'm not entirely convinced whether he was as ignorant about the on-goings of the Toxteth riots as he claimed, the background to the book was nicely set for a dramatic climb to fame for the striker who was once told he was too small to make it at the highest level.
What I really like about the book is, however, the dry humor that is littered throughout. Fowler was describing his father in a paragraph, and mentioned that the old man was a good-looker. He didn't forget to remind the readers that "that explains his good-looking profile". I know, it's corny, but it's exactly the kind of thing that I'd laugh about, and this book did a lot of that.
Disappointment? The overly "saintly" portrayal of Fowler himself. I do not believe he was a victim of consequences as he so vehemently attempted to drive across, and I find the frequent references to his upbringing a little more than hard to bear after, like, 20 pages. This book also has a fair amount of the swear word that starts with the letter "F", so if you get easily offended of such things, you may get really frustrated.
Still, this book is a light-hearted read if you don't expect anything too serious. Fowler is endearing because, apart from scoring goals (and tons of them), he has a colorful off-the-field life, as well as other non-goals-related on-field antics (snorting celebration, anyone?). I think this book manages to capture these rather well. It'd do well with a more coherent layout though. Some of the events seem to jumble up to fully understand when they really happened.
And, as spooky as this sounds, I was just reading a magazine article about Fowler just the night before I bought this book. The next morning, when I still contemplating whether to sneak out from the office to buy it, I got a call from my mate, telling me that Fowler has rejoined Liverpool from Manchester City on a free.
And so, Fowler has returned to Anfield, which makes this book all the more a considerable purchase for Liverpool fans who never felt that God has left. Now Robbie, please go score some goals!
He's just Robbie, Robbie from the block.......2005-10-14
I am a massive fan of Fowler the footballer. His life had all the ingredients for an interesting book: phenomenal talent, early success, hilarious pranks, bastard managers, terrible injuries, bad luck. He also seemed more honest and witty than your average footballer, so I had high expectations from his autobiography, but they were not met.
Unfortunately the book is, simply put, poorly written--which is not his fault I suppose. The tone is annoyingly apologetic, with some justifications (he's just a kid from Toxteth) repeated like mantras every three pages. Also annoyingly, whenever he makes a reference to his past success, which was phenomenal, he sounds defensive and adds that he's not arrogant about it (he's still just a kid from Toxteth). The amateurish mistake of the book is that it tells us how we should feel about him instead of just getting on with telling his story an letting us make up our minds about how to feel about him.
Books of this kind are at their best when they tell behind-the-scenses stories which were previously secret. This book is very thin in this area. Some funny stories about Eriksson and Houlier, the bastard managers from hell as far as Fowler is concerned, provide some color and interest but not enough. The actual stories are few and poorly told, with little in the way of insightful detail. The language lacks verve, except for odd foul words here and there, which seem strident rather than authentic. For authenticity, some self-incrimination on at least some occasions (for example the disgusting incident with LeSaux) would have been useful, but he goes at great lenghts to exculpate himself every single time (he was just a kid from Toxteth, you know).
I am convinced though that his life is a fascinating one and maybe sometimes, after he retires he'll have anohter go at it with a better ghostwriter.
