Book Description
The essays collected here explore the popular press since 1896--from Harmsworth's Daily Mail to Maxwell's Mirror. The history of the popular press has always been about more than big headlines and big profit margins. Personal ambition, partisan loyalty, institutional rivalry, and public accountability join commercial opportunism as the book's recurrent themes.

Ably presented as a microcosm of Australian society.......2004-01-14
The collaboration of Patricia Crawford and Ian Crawford, Contested Country is a fact-filled, 303-page, highly recommended history of the area surrounding Northcliffe, a small Western Australia country town. Ably presented as a microcosm of Australian society and socio-environ-mental history, Contested Country expertly and informatively explores the ways in which different people have strived to shape the land to suit their own needs, with a close eye on divisions between Aboriginal and European attitudes.

Book Description
The centenary history of the world's first popular newspaper.
Book Description
When Canadian industrialist and Thoroughbred breeder E.P. Taylor watched his well-bred, handsome colt pass unsold through the auction ring, he could hardly have envisioned the degree to which this seeming misfortune would boomerang in his favor. Named Northern Dancer, the sales reject proved his worth by winning the 1964 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes for Taylor. In doing so, he become a Canadian hero. And that was only the beginning. As a stallion, the diminutive Northern Dancer exerted a legendary influence on the breed, at one time commanding a million-dollar stud fee. International competition for his offspring created world records in the auction ring. Respected pedigree authority Avalyn Hunter explores how Northern Dancer and his sons have established a royal dynasty that has profoundly dominated the international bloodstock market.
Customer Reviews:
Kingmaker indeed.......2007-03-09
Beautifully and sensitively written history of this most influential thorougbred, probably never another like him. His line still features strongly in both hemispheres. (American readers may be interested to know that our Australian Horse of the Year for 2006 - Makybe Diva - yes a filly! - won our Melbourne Cup 3 consecutive years (the first horse to do so) and amassed over US$10 million dollars, the all-time leading Australasian money-earner. Her grandsire was Danehill (USA), and his grandsire was Northern Dancer.
Great collection of photographs, but would have loved to have seen more of the King at various stages of his career/life. AND there is an index!
A must-have for anyone only vaguely interested in thoroughbred racing.
A Crowning Achievement in Thoroughbred Journalism.......2006-09-19
Avalyn Hunter brings to life the outstanding racing career of Northern Dancer and his legacy through his sons of establishing a royal dynasty in the Thoroughbred industry.
There is enough information packed into the tight 200 pages of writing for those interested in an insider's look at history or for the casual fan wanting to learn about the life of Northern Dancer.
The book is about equally split on Northern Dancer's racing and breeding careers. The opening pages trace ND's bloodline, which may drag for some readers who don't have a background/appreciation in such research. But it is the past matings - along with a little luck - that set the foundation for ND to launch the spiralling prices obtained in the auction ring for his progeny.
Especially interesting are the features on the people surrounding ND, including his owner, Canadian industrialist E.P. Taylor, trainer Horatio Luro and the jockeys that were aboard the multiple-stakes winner. And talk about luck, Luro had wanted young ND gelded as a means to bring better results in training and racing.
There are infrequent times where a book on Thoroughbreds can deliver so much to a wide audience. The Kingmaker is a classic read.
Well written and researched.......2006-06-13
The book is a fine piece of research by Hunter and does a good job of telling the story of Northern Dancer's life and how his connections contributed to the game. While it is a fairly quick read, it's not a page turner on the level with some of the classics such as Nack's "Secretariat" or Schwartz's "Ruffian". The book does do a wonderful job of conveying the importance of Northern Dancer immeasurable contribution to the breed through his numerous offspring. It really is quite a remarkable legacy that the little colt from Canada has left behind.
The Kingmaker: How Northern Dancer Founded a Racing Dynasty.......2006-06-09
I have been a racing and breeding enthusiast for 30 years, and Avalyn Hunter's The Kingmaker: How Northern Dancer Founded a Racing Dynasty is the finest work on the subject I have ever read.
Avalyn Hunter walks both the novice fan and hardcore fan through Northern Dancer's early beginnings, his race by race racing career, and his phenominal success as a sire, broodmare sire, and sire of sires. Indexed in Avalyn Hunter's work are the offspring of Northern Dancer, which reads like a Fortune 400 list in a business magazines, and it includes colorful backgrounds of the people behind Northern Dancer, namely breeder E.P. Taylor and trainer Horatio Luro.
Any fan of historical breeding and racing literature will gain from possessing Avalyn Hunter's work. This book will sit on my shelf as a reference tool for many years to come.
A superbly written and presented history.......2006-06-05
The Kingmaker: How Northern Dancer Founded A Racing Dynasty by Avalyn Hunter (a frequent contributor to "The Blood-Horse" magazine and author of "American Classic Pedigrees") is the remarkable story of racing enthusiast E. P. Taylor's determination to provide the world with a thoroughbred racing horse from his own native Canada. Carrying its readers along through an inherently fascinating account of Taylor and his horse, Northern Dancer, as they made their way to the 1964 Kentucky Derby, The Kingmaker includes legendary stories of the men and horses behind Taylor's impressive accomplishments. A superbly written and presented history, The Kingmaker is very strongly recommended for readers with an interest in the dynamic world of professional horse racing in general, and the accomplishments of Northern Dancer in particular.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2005-08-26
This book I really liked. It was awesome. I loved that Brad was bad guy, seeking around and lying about Star. They need to keep writing about him like that. It's really great when they do. I love how Christina gives up her Belmont money to save Image and Star. It was a great book everyone should read it.
cover page.......2005-06-24
the cover picture sucks!!!!!! what happened to them? they used to be sooooooooo good . i mean isnt star supposed to be a chestnut? And isnt Chris supposed to hav strawberry blond hair? i am so dissappionted with them. i grew up reading this series and i agree with everone else when they say its going downhill. these books used to hook me in and i wouldnt get up now i feel bored.
a good start toward change.......2005-01-08
well, i'll start this by saying that i really didn't care for this book as much as i did starstruck, but i also don't think it was a step backward. it was just kind of boring. this book works more as vignette than a novel. however, mary was truthful when she promised us that brad would show his true colors. there really were some interesting scenes between brad and chris, and i am beginning to like chris's character much, much more. more so than mel's, in fact, but i never cared much for her anyway. chris really seems to be growing from a young, brash teenager to an introspective young adult. and we just have not seen the level of introspection with mel ever that we're seeing in chris's character since #58.
so that was it. like i said, it was kind of boring, though i liked the interaction between brad and chris. brad was written pretty well in this book, not just as being evil for the sake of being evil. he actually had a reason. i might not have done a good job of explaining, but anderson made him more three-dimensional in the novel then i did in my summary. and the look in at ta's operation was cool. plus, i really like chris's character now. she's grown up a lot, and it shows. her introspection is so nice, and what she did for mel was very selfless.
the only downfall was that the book as a whole was kind of, well...boring. it was sort of one-toned, and it seemed like there was so much missing. but, maybe i shouldn't complain too much. this book gets an a++ over many previous books. ever since #57, with the really glaring exception of #62, the books have just gotten so much better. this book was in no way offensive, it just wasn't THAT exiciting. but hey, beggars can't be choosers. i'm looking forward to the sammy books, i just hope they're not overdone, if you get my drift.
i still love these books, and i hope the editors reconsider their recent decision to end the series.
Meagan loves horses.......2004-10-08
I did like the book because it's about horses and I like everything to do with horses. The book is about Christina and her horse Star. While Star and Melanie's horse Image are at Townsend Acres, Brad is pretending he owns Star to try and get more money so that he con somehow sell Image to the best horse training and breeding facilities in all of Kentucky. Melanie is very determined to buy Image and have a colt for her to keep and train to race. I recommend this book to girls because they will like it more than boys will. Little kids can also read this book but you have to like horses. If you read this book, you will definitely want to read another book out of the same series.
Its a good Book.......2004-07-13
Its a good book. I like it how jinks win his race and that Chris is riding for Townsend Acers. It would be differnt if Chris had a child at the age of 19 and she gets married at the age of 18. It also would be good if Star and Image got bread. They could call it Perfect Star or Wonder's Image. I would of rather Star been Caled Wonder's Last Star insted of Wonder's Star.
I really like Jinx hes really cool. I'm kind of glad that Mel and Jazz arnt dateing any more i hope Mel and Kevin get back together.
Thanks for reading this Letter thing.

Equine Sublime.......2002-07-26
Northern Dancer by Muriel Lennox is a vibrant narrative which portrays a fascinating era with emphasis on a mesmerizing focus of the horses as well as the peripheral people! If you enjoy equine sagas or simply appreciate fine writing, this superlative volume will capture your interest and imagination!
Northern Dancer.......2000-01-15
As a horse trainer and owner I have found this book very interesting and entertaining.
A sensitive and quality work.......1999-12-31
This book is very well written and informative. As well as the life-story of this remarkable animal it provides an insight into the history and workings of the racing industry. At times it brought a tear to my eye! I have a Northern Dancer horse and I look at him with a new dimension of knowledge.
My Fav Horse.......1999-12-09
Although I was not old enough to remember Northern Dancer, he was won of the greatest thoroughbreds of this century. Not only in racing its self, but as one of the most influencial stallions of our time. This book allows everyone who knew of The Dancer to remember him. To either help the people to remanise of his great life as they saw him in '64, or for some, to learn of his great accomplishments, and not so golden moments that they never got a glimpse of. But the one thing this book gives everyone, is to learn of the real Northern Dancer. His 'misfit' life as a yearling, his great character and temperment, and his relationship with the people most close to him. He touched alot of people and still does. He is the greastest Canadian horse to step on any track and probibly ever will. Muriel Lenox did I great job in revieling Northern Dancer to us. Her words made me chill when he won the Derby, feel dispair when he lost the Belmont and cry when he died in 1990. But I would like to thank Muriel for what she gave me, a real look at the life of my favorite horse of all time. Northern Dancer will always be a great horse, not only as a horse himself;but as well as his legacy. Such stallions like Storm Cat, Danzig,Nureyev, Nijinsky II and so many more are leaving the Dancer mafk on racing today. This is a great book and at is a must read for any horse lover or fan of racing.
