Book Description

In 1959 the German journalist Norbert Lebert conducted extensive interviews with the sons and daughters of prominent Nazis: Hess, Bormann, Göring, and Himmler; Baldur von Schirach, creator of the Hitler Youth; and Hans Frank, governor of Poland. Then at the beginning of their adult lives, Lebert's subjects were the bearers of notorious names that made them outcasts to some, symbols of a lost glory to others.

Forty years later, Lebert's son Stephan-also a journalist-tracked down these same men and women to find out what had become of them, how they remembered their fathers, and what effect the names they carried had on the paths they had taken. Lebert's account of his conversations, juxtaposed with his father's postwar interviews, gives us an extraordinary and unflinching look at how these individuals have coped with a horrifying heritage.

The stories that emerge are fascinating, surprising, and often disturbing: The young man who refuses military service and is granted conscientious objector status on the grounds that his father is imprisoned by the state--as a Nazi war criminal. The boy who begins his education learning the principles of fascism, finishes it at a Catholic boarding school, and later becomes a priest and a missionary to Africa. The woman who was systematically refused work because she wouldn't use an alias, but who now lives in the suburbs under her husband's name and keeps secret contacts with other nostalgic Nazis. The journalist who writes a scathing magazine article reviling the father responsible for two million deaths, and is greeted with a barrage of letters from outraged Germans--whatever your father may have done, the letters argue, fathers must always be honored.

My Father's Keeper is a remarkable and illuminating addition to our knowledge of the Nazi past and of how this past continues to haunt the present. And it offers a chilling perspective on the way children live with the legacy of their parents' deeds.

3 out of 5 stars Fascinating but badly put together.......2007-10-19

I thought it was just me when I first read this book and found it so confusing until I had a look through the reviews of several other people to see I was not alone in this.

Perhaps the original German is better written but sadly, this does not do it justice which is a great pity as this had the potential to be a fascinating read.

The book centers around follow up interviews the author made with various children of leading men in the Nazi German government. While some have come to terms with both themselves and their fathers past others have remained bitter to this day while some even continue to support, at least in principle the theories of their father.

Of particular interest were Wolf Rudiger Hess who refused to serve in the army out of protest at his fathers imprisonment while Martin Bormann entered the church and to some extent, found a peace with himself Gurden Himmler and Niklas Frank still suffered from inner battles with themselves on how to reconcile the father with the man that the world has come to know.

Fascinating book but you will have to read it twice not least because the narrative is so damn confusing.

3 out of 5 stars Inflated magazine article, but somewhat interesting.......2007-08-20

It's not a subject you run across very often- the post-war lives of the children of the Nazi hierarchy. We tend to think of the 1945 defeat or perhaps the Nuremberg trials as the "end" of the Nazi era, as if the experience of Hitler's Germany was somehow able to be quarantined into distant memory, and banned by Allied decree from any further influence on the nation or the individuals who lived through it. On the contrary, the Nazi experience was indelible and formative. That's true for most Germans of that time, but especially for the children of those men who would have been gods on earth had Germany won the war. Instead, those children were thrown back to reality with the regime's overthrow and had to endure the Old Testament-type stigma of being the offspring of history's most hated men. How do you endure when the world calls your father a monster?

This book gives some surprising answers. It includes the 1959 interviews by Norbert Lebert and the subsequent follow-ups by his son Stephan. Most of Martin Bormann's children- and he was probably the most anti-religious Nazi Minister- converted to Catholicism. His eldest even became a priest. Rudolf Hess' son idolized his father and became something of an apologist for him and the National Socialist ideology. Himmler's daughter became an unrepentant Nazi who desired to rehabilitate her father's name. Hans Frank's son spent his life consumed with hatred for his father. Goring's daughter honors her father's memory. Karl-Otto Saur's son is more philosophical, hating but trying to understand his father. Baldur von Schirach's children are proud of their father for disavowing National Socialism while in prison but are mainly uncomfortable about being in the spotlight.

It's an interesting subject, but the old double standard really struck me. Sixty years after WWII we're still obsessed with the Nazi regime, even going so far as to check up on the children of its officials to make sure they're properly penitent for their father's deeds. Why doesn't anyone track down the children of the men who incinerated the non-combatants of Dresden and a host of other German cities? How are they coping with life knowing their fathers were war criminals? Has anyone done an interview with Margaret Truman to make sure that she has disavowed the father who dropped atomic bombs on the civilians of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? How can LBJ's kids live with themselves? How can the Bush daughters still love a man whom they know has waged aggressive war on Iraq? When it comes to the crimes of the Germans, there seems to be a very one-sided standard of morality in the Anglo-Saxon/Semitic world view.

4 out of 5 stars Great substance - terrible writing.......2007-06-06

I read this book in German. In the original, the substance is fascinating, but the writing was terrible, and the layout of the chapters was confusing and counter-intuitive. This book needed more extensive editing. I hope that in the translation, some of these problems were fixed. Reglardless, this is a highly interesting book and a must-read in spite of its flaws.

3 out of 5 stars In the kingdom of the Blind.......2004-08-03

At the present Amazon price this book is a bargain, so despite my low star ranking, I would urge people to purchase.

The subject this book covers is so under reported that Lebert's book is compelling despite major flaws.

Like most WWII books this publication is compromised by historical orthodoxy, admittedly a particularly onerous burden for a German author.

The strictures of historical orthodoxy make Lebert a casualy unsympathetic biographer. It is impossible for Lebert to speculate as to whether Gudrun Himmlers fierce devotion to her father may have been consolidated by her treatment after the war. In Gudrun's case as in the case of the other "Nazikinder" there is a failure to regard the internment of the children and the deaths/imprisonment of their fathers as possible sources of psychological trauma which deeply influenced their adult lives and opinions.

On a broader note Lebert is not allowed to speculate that a General German insousciance, vis a vis German war criminals, may have it's origin in their own sufferings. Millions of German civilians were immolated in bombing raids, millions of Germans were expelled from their homes, and in the Soviet zone hundreds of thousands of girls and women were gang raped, perhaps their own personal trauma contributed to a tendency towards indifference among the German population to the terrible sufferings of others? Who knows? None can ask.

Although this is not a well written book, as a book, Lebert is a good writer with an easy prose style which means that My Fathers Keeper is by no means a chore to read. An interesting exploration for both the general reader and for those interested in this time period.

4 out of 5 stars Sad and disturbing.......2004-06-26

This book is a must read for those interested in the Nazi leaders. I found some of these children's views most disturbing, especially the refusal to face the truth of what their fathers did (with a few exceptions). What is amazing is the pity party some have telling of the awful prison/camps they were submitted to after the war. Their post war treatment cannot compare to those who suffered in the death camps under the Nazis. The author is very objective in his opinions and observations. I highly recommend this book for those interested in this subject.

Book Description

From the foreword by Donald Miller. The beauty of this story—of what you are about to read—lies in its subtlety. This isn’t a self-help book. If anything, it is a documentary. And I hope it is a documentary that gives you a glimpse through a window and into a family that has dedicated itself to this role of pastoring—a lost art that survives change, shifts in culture, even shifts in fashion.

4 out of 5 stars Honest Stories.......2006-03-05

The past sixty years has seen dramatic changes in the culture of America. These changes range from the way religion is viewed and the invention of new forms of media, to the general demise of racism and the controversies over abortion and homosexuality. How Christians have viewed and reacted to these changes has differed over time. Faith of My Fathers explores these changes and much more through the experiences of three generations of pastors.

Though Chris Seay is the principle author, Faith of My Fathers is really a conversation between a family of pastors united by their love for Christ but divided in their views of ministry and culture. The conversations take place between Chris, his brothers, Brian and Robbie, dad and grandfather (Papa). Donald Miller also adds his two cents from time to time.

After introducing themselves, the family begins by discussing inner-church issues, such as the use of different forms of media and music, multigenerational gaps, and the spiritual and family life of pastors. They then move on to discuss doctrine and how to properly understand the Bible. The conversation gets heated when they begin discussing abortion, James Dobson, and how Christians should be involved in politics (if at all). After addressing racial issues, Chris brings up a personal family matter to close the book.

The parts of the book I enjoyed most were those that resonated with my own experiences. Since multigenerational issues were part of the reason I left the church I grew up at, I was intrigued by that conversation. What I didn't appreciate about the book was the input of Donald Miller. Some of his comments, especially his rants again James Dobson and the Republican party, distracted from the stories of Chris's family.

In his foreword, Donald Miller describes Faith of My Fathers as a documentary (15), and I think that's the best way to approach it. Those who are looking for a `how to' in regards to the issues discussed won't find much direction. What they will find are rich and honest stories born out of the real life experiences of men who have sailed the rolling waves of a changing church and culture.

4 out of 5 stars The Generations Speak..........2005-12-04

Do yourself a favor: Ignore the title. Force yourself to at least read the first chapter. That's what I did.

Now, I don't know if it was some sort of male version of PMS or what, but I found myself against all logic continually moved with emotion. I was downright weepy at times-downright annoyed at others. It's embarrassing. Chris Seay, along with his brother Robbie, sat down for an extended conversation with his father and grandfather. All four are "career" ministers with very different philosophies of ministry. This book is nothing more than a transcript of that conversation, raw and mostly unedited. It is insightful, honest and a must read for anyone who wrestles with the ongoing tension between church and culture.

Oh, and "Papa" definitely steals the show.

Should you buy the book? You'll know the answer to that after reading chapter one.

Book Description

Big City Dreams, Small Town Hopes

Their worlds couldn’t be farther apart, but they share a common mission.
Jordan Riddle, an aspiring playwright and part-time waitress, revels in the pulse and rumble, the joy and pain of life in New York City. While waiting for her big break, she embraces every chance to speak grace to those around her. Peter Riddle, her father, is assistant pastor at the Second Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. Here, he first found faith as a child and now feels called to articulate mercy to the members of his community. Despite their shared calling, each manages to disappoint and misunderstand the other, and five years of silence between them has reached the breaking point.

In this compelling story, father and daughter struggle to find the words that give hope to the people around them, but the different ways they pursue this passion destroys their relationship. As a shared grief emerges from the past, neither is prepared for the cost required to heal the painful disappointment that separates them.
Mirroring the tension that arises when art and faith collide, The Sound of My Voice provides a penetrating exploration of questions vital to our search for truth in a postmodern world.

3 out of 5 stars Fiction is not Kadlecek's best medium........2007-08-29

Having read other non-fiction works by Kadlecek that I felt were outstanding, I was highly disappointed when I read her novel "The Sound of My Voice". Some authors perform beautifully when they branch out in to new writing styles, but in my opinion, it is clear that Kadlecek should stay away from fiction writing and stick to the genre that she knows best.

The quality of writing was sub-par, and dripped with over-dramatic sentiments. The dialogue was forced and unrealistic. The characters were poorly developed and not entirely likable. Overall, I was left with the impression that Kadlecek simply tried too hard, and I felt as though the book was pleading with me to enjoy it, to no avail.

Again, I don't mean to discount Kadlecek's talent as a writer, as I have truly loved her non-fiction works. I simply think she needs to hone her skills in fiction-writing before she takes another stab at crafting a novel.

5 out of 5 stars Real-world faith.......2005-06-11

It's not often enough that the essence of the Christian journey is clearly and simply expressed through fiction. Jo Kadlecek has built a world peopled with characters who carry the fear, determination and potential common to all humanity. While her church-based settings will be embarrassingly familiar to many, it's all of us who are imperfect and it's only a God-out-of-the-box who can restore us. My own dreams are richer after reading Jordan Riddle's story.

5 out of 5 stars Rich Read!.......2005-06-01

4 out of 5 stars interesting character study .......2005-05-18

Her mother cooks Jordan her favorite meal before she moves from her Jackson, Mississippi home to New York City; however her last supper becomes a battlefield between her father Peter, an assistant Baptist pastor, and her. They bitterly argue over her move to New York City.

In Manhattan Jordan studies playwriting at a theater workshop while tasting the city. A few years pass with Jordan waitressing at the Dream Time Tavern while she writes a play Windfall with religious overtones that contain basic human values that is performed in the Village.

Peter preaches to the hometown flock. He can accept their needs but is unwilling to reconcile with his daughter as he remains steadfast in his belief that theater and his ministry do not mix. He refuses to speak to Jordan. When her mother lies dying, her Aunt calls her home to say her goodbyes to the woman Jordan has missed. Her mom's last wish is for her two loved ones to make up and come together.

THE SOUND OF MY VOICE is an interesting character study that focuses on the debate of whether modern day artistic endeavors fit inside or outside the Christian religion. Jordan and Peter represent the poles in the dispute on the place of secular art in a religious pantheon. That enables the audience to look much deeper into the argument, but also makes the spat seem childish and inane, but then again many family arguments that lead to years of non communication are heated but silly in terms of the price. Jo Kadlecek provides an interesting family drama played on a two-state stage but with universal implications.

5 out of 5 stars Good read!.......2005-05-18

I'm not much of a fiction reader, but found myself pulled into this one. I liked that the story was believable but not predictable. More real life than fluff. More Biblical wisdom than sermonizing. Letting God's Word speak for itself. I think everyone can relate on some level to family conflict or feelings of being a disappointment to your parents. I also thought that issues such as racial tension in the south, pastors actually being human, and faith being a lifelong journey were intertwined into the story witout coming across as "preachy". Definitely kept my attention throughout. Looking forward to Kadlecek's next fiction project.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fine Story well written.......2005-07-12

I read this interestng story when I first found the book in 1999. My earnest hope is that James Martin Rhodes will have written another fine book by now.

3 out of 5 stars Exciting story and characters, but marred by uneven writing........2000-03-06

The development of characters was superb, even ones found in only a small section of the story. Although this serves the main characters well, I felt a loss at other minor characters who are never mentioned again, like the fascinating midget attorney, Harris Teeter. The storyline is often riveting yet the author strangely drops the ball at times, depending on your imagination to divine what happened. For example, when John is on trial for the murder of his father-in- law, the true murderer is being sought by the sheriff, and you are privy to a private discussion between two characters who are somehow involved in the murder, yet this story line is abruptly dropped with only a mention of the suicide of one of these characters. I think the author missed a great opportunity for a big courtroom drama scene which could have been the climax of the book. After building up such suspense, it abruptly fizzles out and leaves the reader unsatisfied. The emotional breakdown of the main character, John, after he found his family killed was overdone, as were the dreams of water, which was developed early in the story and, again, was dropped other than a brief mention now and then. John showed considerably restraint in his emotions throughout most of the book and the quote in the first chapter from his wife, saying he "loved as he could" also sets the stage for that characteristic, yet at the end of the book, you get a glimpse into what seems to be a very affectionate and close relationship with his wife, contrary to his original character description. I was also uncomfortable when John tried to show strong emotion, such as grief, and I felt that the author was also uncomfortable trying to express it through this character. John's reaction to the death of his child was much more in keeping with his characterization and in this instance, less is more, I think. I think this book could have been improved with better editing to even out these discrepancies, which did bother me as I was reading it. However, the author really develops his characters so that you feel you know them fairly well and you are interested in what happens to them. I told my spouse the story from time to time and we both found it to be fascinating and suspenseful. With strong character development and a great story, this book could have been great with better editing to even out the rough spots I have mentioned. Since this is the first book from this author, I do hope he continues to work on his craft because I think he shows promise. I would recommend this book to others despite it's uneveness, with a warning that you don't get too attached to the many wonderful characters (that probably deserve their own books to tell their stories) that are too briefly alive on the pages of this book. It is truly hard to put down at times.

4 out of 5 stars In My Father's Generation.......2000-01-18

In My Father's Generation is a heart book. It makes you cry, laugh, and want to know how the book is going to end. The character development is vivid. Each character easily becomes someone who know. You begin to admire John for his strength and tenacity, Wealthy for her love, Corey for his understanding and pureness, Kathleen for her devotion and strength, and Gray because he is so independent and knows what gives him peace. It is a book about friendship and survival. It is a book worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Superb First Novel.......1999-12-23

I found this book so engrossing that I couldn't put it down. I could smell the pine forests of Southern Georgia from here in New England. For all the raves about this book, it is still a first novel from a novelist who shows great promise. But I reserve five stars for the likes of Faulkner. My problem with this book was that it intentionally focused on the intergenerational aspect of Warren's family. It's very title, In My Father's Generation, underlines that focus. And yet, I couldn't quite grasp Warren's father, and his children came across as mere shadows of people. Rhodes is wrestling with the same intergenerational depth problems that confronted Robert Penn Warren (who steamrolled over it) and James Michener, who solved the problem by not caring if his characters were one dimensional. Most recent novelists have attempted the botched solution of padding their books with 1000 pages of junk. So this is a happy medium. But the net result was that I didn't really care what happened to John Warren's family the day after John Warren died. Rhodes is also apparently wrestling with the extraneous character problem, that unique issue in multi generational, long-era historical novels where you need "extras" to move the plot along. Here, those folks get dropped by the wayside, making you wonder why they were needed at all. (the indians, and Grey) I have also been communicating with the author, and it is apparent that he is working very hard at his craft. I look forward to more from him.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Rhodes writes beautiful poetry as well as a great story!.......1999-12-12

Yes, this is a really good story about the horrors of war and loss and death and life lived with courage and love. But, the real joy for me was the Christ figure in the character of Grey Hampton. The Journal writings from the character of Grey Hampton are filled with the cycles of place and time, coupled with the ebb and flow of human fortunes. Certainly a book that is worth reading and passing on to others. A book that is gifted to honor life by the main characters living fully, loving wastefully, and daring to be all that each of them had the capacity to be. Thankyou Mr Rhodes

            Book Description

“‘He’s using the bloody stockwhip on the poor kid’. Together they rushed to the back steps where they could see over the dividing fence of corrugated iron. Joe was playing the whip like a man gone mad while Pat lay writhing on the ground, his Sunday shirt covered in dust and blood.” After a severe horse whipping from his father, Pat is left unconscious and near death. Just 9 years old, he decided then that he was old enough to work for a living and fend for himself - he would never again endure his father’s cruelty. Spanning three generations of an Irish-Australian family, this powerful story is set against the backdrop of the vast Australian continent from the 1890’s through to the 1950’s. The story moves from outback New South Wales to the Jarrah Forests of Western Australia, from suburban Adelaide to the cattle country of the Northern Territory, and finally to tropical North Queensland.

            Book Description

What would legendary Boston Celtics coach and 16-time NBA champion Red Auerbach say is the most critical quality for a person to be successful? Would his advice differ from 10-time NCAA championship coach John Wooden's? What would each say to a young person just starting out in pursuit of their dreams? What is the best advice they were ever given?

It took author Christian Klemash more than two years of research, persistence, and original interviews, but now he's ready to pass on the best advice you'll ever get. Book Description

Bobby Bowden is a coaching treasure and legend. Across six decades at Howard College, West Virginia University, and Florida State University, Coach Bowden has won a total of 332 games and touched the lives of all those around him. With style and grace he has accumulated his victories, which during one stretch resulted in the unfathomable accomplishment of at least 10 wins a season for 15 consecutive years. Inside the pages of this book, readers will discover how Bowden won and what players he used to secure each of his coaching victories. From his first unnoticed conquest in 1959 through the last triumph attended by tens of thousands and covered by a media throng, this is the account of how he did it, win by win. ÝÝ

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book about the legend Bobby Bowden.......2003-12-10

A very well written book with great, rare photographs. Much more than just a game by game analysis of Bobby Bowdens career. This book gives behind the scenes look at the decisions he made in the games and in his career - I am sure happy he did not take the LSU or Alabama positions when he was considering them! A great book about the all-time coaching win leader!. Well researched.
