family tales.......2002-01-14
Marion Rice Hart was my 3rd cousin (grandfather's first cousin). My father was Rusty, the teenager in the book. Our fravorite bedtime stories were 'Daddy's tales of sailing around the world'. Each of his 3 dauhters now covets her old beat up copiy of "Who Called that Lady a Skipper?' I have recently read it to get to know Molly better.
My earliest memory of her was visiting her apartment on 5th Avenue NYC in what had been the ballroom of a mansion. Quite an eye opener for a 5 year old from Maine. Molly fasinated my older sister and I. She had a tough leathery look to match her tough personality. Shr minced no words. She said what she thought and if you didn't like it, to bad. She was in her 70's I guess and would fly up to Maine to visit (I hunt for her later book, "I Fly As I Please"). I was awed by her self confidence. So in reading the book was intersting to see her grow stonger and confident in her abilities as a navigator. She later wrote a text on Navigion that was used at te US Coast Gaurd Academy when my father alltended in the early 40's.
Unlike most rich yatch owners, she took a very active role in the voyage of the yatch Vanora. She , like Beryl Markem, was an adventeress when that was a career. The 20's produced many amazing woman. Of coure inheritng 5 million didn't hurt. I wander what she would have done if she hadn't been rich. The money was mostly lost in the Depression and squandered by her sibilings and thier childern. She lived her life exactly as she wished, a trait my father inherited or picked up from her on his years on the Vanora.
This book should interst anyone intersted in adventures, travel to exotic islands, sailing without modern navigation aids, and interiging personalities.

Book Description
Craig Rice, the author of fourteen novels, countless short stories, and a number of true crime pieces, once rivaled Agatha Christie in sales. She was on the cover of Time Magazine in 1946. However, the past fifty years have seen her fall into relative obscurity. Rice made for an interesting subject for a biography because nearly every identification point about the author was in dispute: her birth, her real name, her number of marriages, number of children, her canon of fiction, and the cause of her early death. Marks had to wade through years of research to come up with the answers to those questions. Following a trail that went from Venice, Italy to Venice Beach, CA, he talked to a number of her contemporaries, her family, and friends to come up with an engaging book that reminds readers why Rice remains the undisputed queen of the comedic mystery.
Customer Reviews:
Pleased but disappointed.......2002-05-14
If you're a Craig Rice fan, as I am, you'll be pleased by the publication of this book. Whether it's the first or only biography that will ever be written about an author whose work has been egregiously neglected by reprint publishers--to the detriment of the reading public--it furnishes the curious fan with some vital information about a fascinating but very troubled woman whose life was a far cry from the delightfully wacky works she's best remembered for.
So why am I disappointed?
Because a lot of Marks's writing is sloppy and thus confusing, which in turn suggests sloppy editing; and because the proofreader, if one existed, didn't do his or her job very well. Typos abound. Even the page numbers given in the index are incorrect!
Nevertheless, I applaud Marks for his scholarship and dedication to the project. Perhaps his book will spur future biographers to delve more deeply into Rice's life and works. Above all, perhaps it will spur a publisher into reprinting her novels and story collections to reach new readers.
A Valuable First Step.......2002-02-12
It's nice to see the witty, vital work of Craig Rice finally getting some scholarly attention. Jeffrey Marks has done a thorough job of research, and he deserves praise for untangling such apparently Gordian knots as Rice's real name, the history of her marriages, and her confused publication history. However, his biography is more of a necessary first step than a truly engaging work in itself. While he details the sorrows of Rice's life, he never really shows us why her contemporaries referred to her as funny, bright, and lively. His analysis of her place in the history of her genre is cursory at best (surprisingly, given his knowledge of the field), and he tends to summarize rather than discuss her novels. The book is also quite badly proofread. Nonetheless, he has performed a true service for Rice fans and critics, who I hope will use this book in order to do more analytical work.
Worth a read.......2001-07-03
Jeffrey Marks does a fairly good job writing about a woman who lived such a hard and bizarre life. Finding details for Craig Rice's life story must have been a real challenge. I am Craig's grand-daughter and I learned more about Craig's life from this book than from conversations with those who knew Craig. The book must have required exhaustive research on Mr. Mark's part. He ties the story of her life together and includes a great deal of information about Craig's novels, her movie scripts and her short stories.
A long needed memorial to an outstanding author.......2001-04-29
Craig Rice authored fourteen novels, countless short stories, some true crime pieces, and once rivaled Agatha Christie in popularity with the mystery loving fans. She lead a life as secretive as her work was public. In Who Was That Lady?: Craig Rice - The Queen Of Screwball Mystery, Jeffrey Marks unravels her fascinating biography based on original research and interviews with her contemporaries, family, and friends. A long needed memorial to an outstanding and time-forgotten author, this remarkable and engaging account of her life and work is enhanced with eight pages of photographs, footnotes, and index. Who Was That Lady? is a "must" for her fans and an invaluable contribution to the history of the literary genre in which she made her mark.
Very highly recommended.......2001-04-23
In this fascinating biography, Jeffrey Marks delves into the life of author Craig Rice, proving that her life was even more mysterious than her work. While Rice carefully obscured the facts regarding her life, Marks attempts to clarify the important role this woman played in the evolution of the mystery genre. Indeed, Rice pushed comedy to the forefront of the mystery genre.
Wishing to be accepted by the good old boy network of journalism, early in her career, Rice used a masculine pseudonym, and frequently did not acknowledge her gender in the text of her work. Rice thrived on misleading the press and others who would pinpoint her life with any accuracy. Just as her very choice of penname assures ambiguity, she also obscured how many times she married, and even what novels, novellas or short stories she actually wrote.
The same can't-be-beat optimism that imbued Rice's characters also characterizes her own life. Despite manic depression, acute alcoholism, and desperate mishandling of income, Rice manages to maintain her optimistic nature. A female publishing phenomenon of the 1940s, Rice annoyed such giants of the mystery genre as Erle Stanley Gardner when she was on the cover of "Time". Rice's reoccurring to matrimony demonstrate her to rely upon others for security. She marries perhaps five times, with many other men also entering her life temporarily, many hoping to allow her to support them. Abandonment, absent fathers, and orphans become life long themes of her work as a result of her own life.
Rice's method of writing was notable. She wrote without outline, character sketches, or any idea of the conclusion. This incredibly focused effort would keep her up days writing maniacally, and she would not surface until the work was complete. This writing style clearly demonstrates the mania side of bipolar disorder, and explains her downfall once she began self-medicating with alcohol. It also explains her publisher's displeasure with work that wasn't adequately polished late in her career, but read like a first draft.
While much of Rice's work reads like a Shakespearean tragedy, her strength and determination still shine through in Mark's prose. While acknowledging Rice's weaknesses, Mark balances them with her wit, talent, and sparkle. Capturing the flavor of the eras in which Rice was both at her best and at her worst, Marks doesn't spare the truth when he discusses the author's fatal flaws, including her family relationships, mental instability, and money problems.
Marks' thoughtful literary criticism adds a remarkable, yet fascinating depth to WHO WAS THE LADY. Not only is his research impeccable, but he also goes beyond the life of Craig Rice to provide insight regarding how she affected the development of the comedy mystery. While the beginning of the book is a bit slow going, once the background material is in place, the pace picks up, becoming a fascinating read. While Rice was a troubled woman, she deserves notice for her writing talent and strength of spirit despite the debilitating liabilities she faced. Mark's consummate handling of the material demonstrates both a deep love of the comic mystery genre, and a sincere respect for the remarkable Craig Rice. Very highly recommended.

(RAW Rating: 3.5) - Friends and Lovers.......2007-07-29
Crystal Taylor, along with Keyandré "Key" Emerson and his sister Shonté have been friends since forever. She and Shonté are roommates who, although share the same space, lead very different lifestyles. Crystal is conservative and always in charge, Key very comfortable with the person he has become and Shonté is the wildest of the bunch. After trying unsuccessfully to get Shonté to stop dating a married man, Crystal finds herself getting drunk and crying on Key's shoulders, while the two are out on the town. They end up at Key's apartment, one thing leads to another, and they have sex.
Her relationship with Shonté is already strained, now Crystal is also having a hard time coming to grips with what happened with Key. She decides to take control of her own life, changes her appearance and stays as far away from Key as possible. However, Key is not having it and tells her in so many words what she means to him. If Crystal gives in and she and Key become lovers, will it affect her friendship with Shonté or her sanctity for that matter?
Andrea Jackson, aka, The Paperback Diva has written a wonderful novel filled with drama. The friendship shared by Crystal, Key and Shonté was priceless. Most times, friendship based books will feature two or more women as main characters; however, Ms. Jackson ventures a step further by adding a male in the mix. WHO'S THAT LADY is a book readers will enjoy.

People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13
Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"
Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.
The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.
Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.
Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!
Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.
Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.
Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11
This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.
44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.
They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.
The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.
god unplugged.......2007-02-02
God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.
After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25
Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)
Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24
What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]
