Alan Greenspan became chairman of the Federal Reserve a scant two months before the stock market crash of 1987. His deft handling of that crisis presaged his triumph in the 1990s, when he kept America from succumbing to the Asian financial flu, and received as much credit for the nation's booming economy as President Clinton. At appropriate points in this solid biography, former Fortune magazine staffer Justin Martin lucidly explains the intricacies of the financial system that Greenspan has dominated for 13 years. But the more fascinating revelations deal with the enigmatic Fed chairman's private life. Born in 1926, Greenspan was a Juilliard student and professional jazz musician before he entered New York University's School of Commerce in 1945. Novelist-philosopher Ayn Rand had a powerful influence on his economic thinking, and Greenspan spent 15 years as a member of her inner circle while he built a successful consulting practice. He made a few slips at the Fed, particularly when he failed to prevent the recession of 1990-91; but Martin shows him learning from his mistakes. Judicious quotes from interviews with colleagues and friends convey Greenspan's intriguing contradictions: aloof, yet collegial at work; deliberately obscure when testifying before Congress, but judged a fascinating conversationalist by the women he's dated, most of whom have been journalists. (He married NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell in 1997.) Is the secretive Chairman Greenspan secretly a media hound? In this instance, and many others, Martin's evenhanded portrait lays out opposing views and lets readers draw their own conclusions. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
A national bestseller-the acclaimed chronicle of the life and times of Alan Greenspan.
Greenspan: The Man Behind Money presents the famous Fed Chairman as few know him. It spans his hardscrabble childhood in Depression-era New York City, his fascinating decades-long friendship with controversial author Ayn Rand, his Juilliard education and days spent touring with Henry Jerome's jazz band, as well as two marriages, a dynamic D.C. social life, and service to six U.S. presidents. Based on unprecedented access to Greenspan's family members and peers, including Henry Kissinger, Gerald Ford, and Milton Friedman, Greenspan: The Man Behind Money is the only book to shed real light on one of the most private public figures of our time.

A delightful read.......2003-08-26
Justin Martin's "Greenspan" -- from beginning to end -- is a delightful read. I was laughing over and over as the pages turned, and was disappointed upon running out of pages to read.
Here is one humorous example (page 225), about Greenspan changed his seating position at the FOMC meeting table.
"Then there's the table flap. Since 1977, the FOMC has conducted its business around a twenty-seven-foot-long table fashioned out of Honduran mahogany, with a center section made of black granite. It weighs two tons. Since becoming Fed chairman, Greenspan had always sat at the head of this table. But in November 1998, attendees at one of the Fed's periodic public meetings noticed that he had moved to a spot in the middle.
"The hubbub began immediately. What did it mean? Was Greenspan sending a message about increased 'collegiality' at the Fed? Turns out the move was for the sake of acoustics. 'Given the speed of sound, the advice arrived too late and inadvertently we got behind the curve,' joked Greenspan, during a meeting of the Fed's Board of Governors."
I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in economics.
Disingenous.......2002-05-31
Read all about the frightened little ec0nomist who happens to be (pragmatically) the most powerful man on the planet.
Greenspan's dreadful fear of inflation is really the origin of our current economic recession, his timing is worse than a paranoid knife thrower afflicted with Parkinsons disease.
This book isn't written objectively and will only benefit those who worship the detritus he leaves behind. It works too hard to portray him as well meaning guy who just happened to luck into his current job, but skims or omits his blunders and mistakes.
This book is best for the Greenspan groupies.
Interesting Material and Captivating Presentation.......2002-05-07
This book is an excellent journalistic account of Alan Greenspan's life up to the first part of 2000 - the zenith of his career and fame.
The book is not a serious biography. You will be disappointed if you expect the book to give you a deep and insightful analysis of Greenspan's life philosophy, his work methodology, or a revelation of the detail working of the Federal Reserve System.
On the other hand, this book is a fascinating account of his life - both its private and public sides. Greenspan's brush with band music, his own economic consulting business which employed mostly female economists, his relationship with Ayn Rand and as an esteemed member of her Objectivist Collective, his role and relationship with the Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush and the Clinton teams. There are also some vivid accounts of how he handled some high profile financial and monetary situations as well as how he left his handprints on several important presidential commission reports and recommendations. And, of course, the book has not neglected to give brief but interesting accounts of the women in his life.
This book is very well written - the material is interesting and well organized, and presentation is smooth and captivating. I find it to be very enjoyable reading.
Read to the end. The last two paragraphs of the book were as weighty as everything written prior!
Great Source on Chairman Greenspan.......2002-03-11
The principles that Alan Greenspan follows politically and economically are all accounted for in the in-depth writing Justin Martin presented in this book. Justin Martin even gets into small details about Alan Greenspan that not many people know about. I recommend this book to anyone willing to learn rock solid principles surrounding our economic conditions.
People Magazine Bio.......2002-02-01
An extremely shallow book that offers no insight how Greenspan thinks or makes his decisions. The reason Greenspan is such an interesting character is how he has managed to constantly adapt to changing market conditions. The real story would be why and how he came to the decisions he did, but this book just reports his actions. There is almost no economic anlysis or justification. Anyone looking to gain some understanding of Greenspan's thought process will be left wanting and extremely disappointed with this book.

Book Description
Each day presents women with an unending parade of choices. Some are fairly mundane, while others can prove to be life changing. In this new edition of Briscoe's popular book, she addresses the crucial issues that women face on a daily basis.
Using the book of James as a model, Briscoe examines the following choices that most women face:
- To resist pain or to use it
- To gather wealth or to gather grace
- To speak wisely or to speak foolishly
- To value our time or to fritter it away
- To live for ourselves or to live for the Spirit
- To develop God's gifts or to waste them
- To persevere or to protest
- To stand for truth or to abandon it
Customer Reviews:
A challenging study.......2007-03-09
Our women's Bible Study has really enjoyed this book. It tells us things we really don't want to hear but need to hear. Jill sprinkles it with her personal stories which help in the understanding of the subject. Really good and is challenging us to be more like Christ.
This book is AWESOME!.......2007-01-04
A group of women at our church (140 of them) are currently going through the book as a monthly study. The women read a chapter a MONTH and then we have a speaker and discussion time. The book is AWESOME and everyone has enjoyed the material. It's both "easy to read" and yet very challenging. I would highly recommend it for a personal read as well as one to be used as a group study.
In-depth priorities check.......2006-08-26
Jill Briscoe is fantastic. This book is grounded in the Bible and gets to the heart of key areas that are vital to your Christian walk. Not an anemic gloss-over, nor a "health and wealth" God-as-geanie recipe book. Jill challenges the reader to make real grown-up Christian decisions about truly living your life for Christ, but does it in a wonderfully humble and loving style. With plenty of scripture and real-life examples, it is one of those books that are easy and enjoyable to read, but not a quick read because it is constantly prayer and thought provoking.

Holman's Atlas.......2007-09-27
This book has been an asset in the geography class that I'm taking. It has all that I need and more. My studies have come alive. This was a wise purchase.
Holman Bible Atlas.......2007-03-12
This is a very good Bible atlas. It has solid narrative and colorful maps and illustrations to support the text. The book is easily followed as it is divided into coded chapters and sections. But the main focus is the maps. Many are in full color, some even depict three dimensional cross sections to help the reader understand local topography. To supplement the maps and text, there are several charts. These charts give quick summaries of their topics. Rounding out the visuals of the book are various artworks and some photographs. Many of the photographs are taken from angles that do not show modern features such as power lines or modern structures. In this light they add dimension to the book as they show the reader what the people of ancient Palastine would have seen.
This book is essential for Bible scholars and historians alike. Geographers will also find it useful. But do not misunderstand me. This atlas is for everyone. It has information for people taking Bible study classes, or for pastors, of for anyone with a desire to know the Holy Lands in greater detail. The book covers the biblical period and carries the development of early Christianity into the second and third centuries. But the focus is the Bible times through the writings of Paul. This book comes highly recommended.

My standby gift for years!.......2006-11-01
Brisco's Atlas continues to serve as the gift of my choice for students, fellow church members, and new believers. There is no better Bible study discipline than to learn to use a Bible Atlas parallel to your studies. The Holman Bible Atlas is the best! It never fails me.
Very helpfull.......2006-03-11

Book Description
Jack Brisco went from NCAA Champion at Oklahoma State University to NWA World Heavyweight wrestling champion. As one of professional wrestling's biggest stars of the last 50 years, Brisco lived an extraordinary life in and out of the ring. In this marvelous book, full of photos, author Bill Murdock spins a spellbinding story that takes you behind the scenes of the athletic world's most intriguing sport.
Customer Reviews:
The Greatest Wrestling Book Ever Written........2006-07-10
All wrestling books pale in comparison to Jack Brisco's tale of athletisism and triumph. Brisco goes into great detail talking about his amature wrestling career and his training methods. A unique perspective on mat wrestling that should be required reading for all pro-wrestling trainees. If that isn't amazing enough, Brisco then steps into the professional ring and rises to the top of the wrestling world, winning its greatest prize, the NWA World Heavyweight title.
The best part about this book is that every single page is a history lesson. When Brisco tells a story, and mentions a name, he pauses to explain WHO the name is and gives a brief history of the person's accomplishments. I learned more from reading BRISCO than any other book I've ever read.
Rating: A Perfect 10. This is the best wrestling book I've ever read!
Reviewed by Onlineworldofwrestling.com's Brad Dykens
Very good book, a must read.......2005-02-21
Really, really interesting from a information standpoint rather than expose standpoint. Very good historical background that gives you a great perspective on how difficult it was to be the NWA champ, the politics of winning and losing, and the jealousy.
A Wonderful Wrestler's Tale.......2004-05-18
Just mention the name Brisco to any serious wrestling fan, and it instantly conjures up images of greatness.
The name and the tag can now be applied to a book that chronicles the life of one of professional - and amateur - wrestling's greatest stars.
"Brisco - The Life and Times of National Collegiate and World Heavyweight Champion Jack Brisco" traces Brisco's storied wrestling career, from three-time state high school champion to NCAA champion at Oklahoma State, to two-time champ in the pro ranks.
The fact that mat historian and co-author Bill Murdock not only brings Brisco's fascinating stories to life, but captures the essence of that important time period in the wrestling business, makes the read all that more engaging.
The rich history of professional wrestling oozes throughout the pages of this grappler's tale, as readers get a ringside ticket to some of the watershed events that helped shape the industry as it moved from the days of territorial wrestling toward the era of sports entertainment.
Of course, a book about Jack Brisco wouldn't be complete without an extensive discourse on Dory Funk Jr., Brisco's bookend in one of the greatest programs in wrestling history. On that count the narrative delivers in spades.
"Brisco" is a must for any serious wrestling fan. Readers get a special look at one of pro wrestling's greatest periods, the `70s, when names like Brisco, Funk and Race ruled the wrestling universe. And they get to see it through the eyes of one of the true greats.
Great Wrestler, Great Bio!.......2004-05-13
The first time I saw Jack Brisco wrestle, it was on a rare L.A. TV appearance shortly before he won the NWA title in 1973. I was 10 years old, a novice wrestling fan, and two things immediately impressed me about him: how quick he was in the ring compared to the other L.A. wrestlers (the only wrestler in L.A. who moved at his pace---at least through this ten year old's eyes!--- was journeyman Raul Mata), and how cool it was to see such a pure athlete with long hair! Obviously, I had little understanding of the wrestling biz and the art of working a match, so I could only sum up Jack Brisco by saying "He's way cooler than the rest!"
Throughout the years I became better equipped to describe why Jack Brisco was way cooler, and I had great respect for him. Along comes the book "Brisco: The Life and Times of National Collegiate and World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion Jack Brisco," and now I have even greater respect for him.
"Brisco" is one of those books that is a good read whether you are a die-hard wrestling fan or a reader who knows nothing about the pro wrestling business. The catch-phrases and details of the business are explained without going over the novice's head.
The book is told in the first person with Bill Murdock as editor. Jack Brisco presents himself as very confidant in his skills, but never goes over the line as a braggart, but as a team player. The list of people he credits with molding him into a successful wrestler, businessman and person is vast. He describes his counterparts honestly, neither deifing or trash-talking wrestlers and promoters. The first example that jumps into my mind is his description of the late Eddie Graham. He credits Graham as giving him his most important boost in his professional career, and his stubborn campaigning to crown Brisco as the next NWA Heavyweight Champion. On the flip side, he made no bones about Eddie pocketing more than his lion's share of his profits, and paying the wrestlers less than they deserved.
One of the most moving accounts of people he credits with helping his way up the success ladder comes when he speaks of Joe Scarpa AKA Jay Strongbow. Scarpa took Brisco under his wing like a father. He not only stood up for Jack when wrestlers messed with him, but he also dished out tough love when Brisco was acting out of line. He taught him the art of being a babyface (the hero--- there's more to it than non-wrestling fans realize) and the "babyface comeback."
The first thing that pleasantly surprised me in this book came when Mr. Brisco spoke glowingly of Haystack Calhoun. While I have always been a fan of the ace amateur wrestlers and/or shooters, I was always turned off by their closed-window view of what pro wrestling should be. Case in point are two other excellent books, "Hooker" by Lou Thesz, and "Pure Dynamite" by Dynamite Kid, where the authors often sounded dismissive of wrestlers who were not 100% athleticism. I do not mean this to disrespect Lou Thesz or Dynamite Kid, but merely to point out that pro wrestlers are, and always have been, a diverse group of performers, and that the gimmick wrestlers are part of the business. Obviously, he did not laud Calhoun for his wrestling ability, but for his ability to get the fans jazzed when his 600+ frame was about to squash the ring's villains. Brisco also described Haystack Calhoun's optimistic nature and his willingness to spend time giving autographs for the fans. I know I'm probably driving this point into the ground, but it is awesome to see a serious wrestler like Brisco to take note and point out the contributions of a "gimmick wrestler."
Brisco describes in detail the complexities of a business many non-wrestling fans see as simple, from the politics wrestlers have to practice and endure to dealings with uncouthe promoters. Like Lou Thesz did in "Hooker," Brisco tells in great detail the stressful schedule he endured after becoming NWA Heavyweight champion, always keeping up on flight schedules, finding time to keep in shape on top of the travel, and racing from state to state to make a title defense. Brisco's best told travel fiasco in the book has got to be the disastrous flight to Alabama when one of the landing gears would not work, and the pilot's neanderthol attempt to repair in front of the passengers!
My only complaint? I would love to see this book marketed more aggressively. "Brisco" should be required reading for all wrestling fans, as well as anybody who wants to enter the wrestling biz. This is definitely on my "top 5" list of books on pro wrestling.
A must read for all fans!.......2004-03-08
BRISCO is a book you must read if you have any interest in wrestling and its history!! Murdock tells Jack's story in such an interesting way that will hold your attention. By far the best book of its kind I have read. Buy yours now!

Building relationship with your grandchildren........2006-10-27
I learned so much reading this book and found myself laughing out loud at the jokes and sayings!! I spend lots of time with my five grandsons and truly want to have a unique relationship with each of them. The ideas in this 52 ELF book are so well thought out and offer so many levels and dimensions to activities that I never would have come up with myself. The focus on memorable moments is inspired. There is even a recipe for making "slime" which I think my boys will really enjoy someday. It even helps you plan and organize and gather the necessary items for the activities so you have more success. Grandparents are perhaps more involved with grandkids now than ever. We live longer and have many more years to become important to this wonderful next generation. Even if you think you have lots of ideas for things to do, this book will give you more and add depth to your precious hours together. I highly recommend it for parents and teacher too.

Awesome New Author-Must READ.......2006-02-16
I came upon this book by accident and am SO grateful. This is an absolutely beautiful and inspriational story. This is an amazing story of an American family. The story is funny at times and a tear jerker at others. The author captured the dynamics of a family facing adversity and human struggles but shows how powerful the love of a family can be. I HIGHLY recommend this book!
