Babies and toddlers who loved the "real" ladybugs in Ten Little Ladybugs will adore the nine sparkly, three-dimensional butterflies in Good Night, Sweet Butterflies. Each glitter-covered butterfly flits through a color-themed spread which offers a place for the little winged one to sleep: "on red roses as a red robin sings good night," is the text accompanying a psychedelic, color-saturated image of birds, flowers, and various insects. The meter of the rhyming text is a bit off, which makes it hard to read the book rhythmically, but little ones are likely to be so enthralled with the illustrations that it won't matter. The thick, kid-friendly pages are easy to turn and hard to tear; the butterflies are securely mounted, but not impossible to remove, so it might be a good idea to keep this one for reading together. (Ages 2 to 6) --Jennifer Lindsay

5 out of 5 stars Great for learning colors.......2007-07-22

My daughter is 2 and loves this book. It has helped her learn her colors and she loves to touch the butterflys. The pictures are fun and she finds new things to look at every time we read it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-05-17

The pictures in this book are so lovely. Short easy to read text for those kids who would rather look at the pictures than listen to the words. We spend most of the time pointing out all the things of like colors on each page (i.e. pink pig, pink possum, pink butterfly, etc.).
Both my girls enjoy this book. It has been a favorite of my younger child for over 6 months (she's 21 mo. now). Whenever we sense an impending meltdow/temper tantrum, we pull this book out to distract her.

5 out of 5 stars sweet, colorful and educational.......2007-02-18

This story is one of my daughter's favorites; she learned her colors listening to this book. The raised butterflies are a great tactile addition to this already interesting book. Bright, colorful illustrations are appealing to little eyes as well as big.

5 out of 5 stars absolutely delightful book.......2007-02-12

This book is so delightful. The colors, the story, the quality---mommy and 36 mo old approve!! Two thumbs up

This book and 10 little ladybugs are WONDERFUL books - no complaints!

4 out of 5 stars Independent Women.......2006-09-28

Butterflies of the Night is the first hand account of one American woman's journey into the Japanese world of the nightclub, where friendship and sex is offered. For a price. From the sleazy sex clubs to the high class geisha houses the author reveals much through interviews with club owners, hostesses, strippers, gangsters and even customers. The system seems to allow men to find relief from stress, find emotional support and even do major business deals. It also allows some women to find social and economic freedom outside the normal world of low paying jobs and marriages.
My only problem with the book is that many of the chapters were published in magazines in the late 1980s and the book was first printed in 1992. I would like to know how things changed or have not changed since than. What has happened after the boom economy has popped? I guess I have to find a book from the late 90s or early 21st Century for that.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book, entertaining read.......2005-06-20

This is the best book on hostess clubs that I've read. It was entertaining, informative from a first persons perspective without being biased. If you are interested in the Japanese nightlife get this book.

5 out of 5 stars A look before and behind the curtain........2002-11-30

This book is the result of a limited sociological research of nightlife (mizu shobai) in Japan by an American woman who knows the business well because she worked in it.
As she states '... supply the material for a man's dreams and desires. Being able to keep a man believing that he has a chance, a possibility of making love, and yet always tactfully turning him down in such a way that he enjoys his time, is a hostess's true talent'. (p.50)
It is a lively and very interesting inside look into this more or less hidden part of the Japanese society.
This book covers all the strata of the Japanese sex/entertainment business: from 'top of the bill' geishas to heroin hookers. As Lisa Louis states 'the mizu shobai stage reflects a bizarre mixture of humanity, including top company executives, power-wielding gangsters, ranking politicians, Buddhist monks, preservers of ancient tradition, curious Westerners, third-world economic refugees, desperate women, and lonely men.' (p.206)
But it also gives indirectly a good picture of the Japanese society in general: lonely men, lonely wives, women who work at night for their parent's old days, the subordination of women.
Not to be missed by those interested in the Japanese society.
For a more general vieuw of the erotic aspect of the Japanese society I recommend 'Pink Samurai' by Nicholas Bornoff and the books of Ian Buruma.

5 out of 5 stars A Simple look into Japan's Nightlife.......2002-03-15

This is another book that i happened to stumble upon while looking through the Japanese history section of a large used bookstore. This was a fascinating book about women who entertain men for a living in Japan. Everything from geisha to girls who work at soaplands. Nicely detailed with delightful although sometimes disturbing interviews. Ms. Louis has written a fine book for those who want to know a bit more about Japan than just salary men. There is even a chapter on the notorious Yakuza. I must say, however, that those who are worried about feminist issues might not like this book. Not the writer, but some of the ways in which the Japanese men talk about women. Wives and geisha are called property. Also I am not saying that all Japanese men say this just some of those who are interviewed for this book. Too bad this book was never reissued in paperback I'm sure that it would have reached a receptive audiance. Also I wished there had been a bibliography of further books to reference, but since this book is based on personal experiences and interviews i guess a bibliography would be unnecessary.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective on Japanese Night Life.......2001-01-10

The author Lisa Louis is an American who traveled to Japan and actually lived there for a number of years. When in need of some extra money she dabbled in the night life profession herself as a hostess at a bar where she poured drinks and entertained men. She is also fluent in the Japanese language. It?s because of these things that I think she was able to write such a compelling book. Since she has been a part of both cultures she is able to explain things to an American audience in a way that we can relate to.

I also really like the layout of the book. She starts out with her story and what compelled her to make the book. But without assuming she is all-knowing on the subject matter. She recruited numerous others to tell their stories as well.

I got the book because of my interest in Geisha but learned so much more than I ever expected to. I had no idea of so many of these things! It was quite a page turner as you?re eager to learn even more.

    Book Description

An astonishing collection of images so vibrant they seem poised to fly off the page.

In a place where art, science and technology meet, Joseph Scheer's images of moths emerge. These ubiquitous creatures are often considered drab-colored poor relations of the "beautiful" butterfly; Scheer's artwork will forever change that notion. By using a high-resolution scanner, recently developed digital printing technology, and an artist's sensibility, he brings forth the subtleties and astonishing varieties of color and textures that moths possess. The result is a glittering jewel box of brilliantly colored, intricately formed creatures, each with its own landscape of tiny hairs, kaleidoscopic color, iridescent eyes and antennae as intricate as filigree.

Scheer's moth experiments started out as a fine art print installation to show a range of insects at large scale in a single room, and have now expanded into a biodiversity project with a significant number of specimens. This exquisitely produced volume features one hundred and fifty prints selected from Scheer's extensive collection, images of such incredible depth and color you'll want to reach out and touch them. Certainly you'll never look at a moth the same way again.

    5 out of 5 stars Reality Check.......2007-07-11

This book is simply amazing--and I love that the emphasis is simply on the beauty of the moth. I would recommend it as a gift for anyone who will appreciate being reminded of the miraculous beauty of that which we bypass(or worse...swat at) every day. A fantastically wonderful reality check.

3 out of 5 stars capturing and killing beauty.......2005-12-12

A nice pair of close-up binoculars, a flashlight and boots could be a lot more exciting and respectful of these animals than drying them up just to copy their evolutionary path and call it art. The three stars are for the benefit of those who would have never known such creatures exist, that much this book has done. Why not get a microscope and take photos of bacteria, or take photos of metal detector screens. I prefer my animals alive in their habitat, and my art to really say something. Check out naturephotographers dot net. Now there is photography of nature.

    5 out of 5 stars The beauty I overlooked.......2005-11-07

Joseph Sheer has used his expertise in the electronic arts-scanning and digital imaging-to produce an amazing collection of colorful, vivid images of moths. Very simply, "Night Visions" contains stupendous color plates and would appeal to anyone, especially those interested in macro imaging or the study of Lepidoptera (butterflies, skippers and moths).

The book begins with three introductory chapters (like forewords), the first by Mr. Sheer explaining his interest in moths and his techniques for trapping them and scanning them for print images. Lepidopterist Marc Epstein follows with a four-page mini-course in moth types, habits and markings, after which Johanna Drucker briefly describes the evolution of image making that brought us to the scanning technology which produced this book. I enjoyed the first two sections the best since I became interested in moths upon seeing this book.

There are over 70 color plates, mostly displaying the moths enlarged so that each wingspan extends to just about one full page in width (depending on the moth, that's a magnification ranging from 2.5x to over 20x). In addition, where aspects of a moth's coloration or texture is particularly fascinating, a secondary blow-up, many times the initial enlargement, is displayed alongside in order to give perspective to the detail. In every case, the result is a photograph that is amazing in terms of clarity, color and detail. I've never seen anything like this.

A nice bonus can be found in the last twelve pages, which have another 150-plus 1" x 2" photos of moths, arranged by family (Sphinx moths, Tiger moths, Owlet, etc.) so that an easier comparison of characteristics can be made to introduce the reader to the different family types. I thought this added a nice educational complement to the big images. The construction of the book is first-rate, with durable, thick and glossy print stock. "Night Visions" is bound to fascinate just about anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing state of the art color scanning.......2005-04-02

The front and back covers of this book are not mirror images of each other. They are continuous parts of a scan that is 12 inches tall and about 36 inches long, including the flaps in the front and back covers. The body of the moth is not clear along the spine of the book, but the light hairs extending an inch or more from dark shoulder pads are similar to the pattern of Grammia virgo on Plate 18. This print of the entire moth measures six and a half inches between spots that are shown on the inner flaps, so the cover must be zooming in with a power of five on the size of a full page moth in this book. The virgin tiger moth shown in the tiny version of that scan on page 110 has a wingspan of 6.2 cm. It is amazing how intense the colors become as the picture is electronically exploded to twenty-five times actual size, and fine red hairs can be seen crossing yellow wing membrane.

On Plate 18, the antennae curve like an antelope's antler, with tiny offshoots like eyelashes. The wings look as fuzzy as moths are expected to be, with fine hairs projecting into the space between the wings and the body. The long cover scan is so well focused on the hairs at the glass of the scanner that the gap between body and wing is hardly noticeable, except on the back cover, where distinct hairs over a white background approach the rounded red shape of the moth's body. The intricate parts of the wings look flaky, but the scanning technique emphasizes the shapes and colors of discrete objects on the surface of the glass much more than how three-dimensional anything is. Legs might be blurry, as in plate 43, Magusa orbifera, or extremely hairy when they are featured, as on plate 44, Zanclognatha laevigata, looking like a combination of feathers and spiky thorns.

Weird is the 11 and 1/2 by 18 inch scan of Geina tenuidactyla on plate 59, which looks like it has five or six feathers on each side, striped curvy antennae, and legs with long spines at the joints. Wingspan is actually 1.1 cm, so the scan is magnified about 40 times, and the strange features of the Pterophoridae family are explained on page 116. "They are mostly small moths with long slender legs. At rest the wings are rolled in a T-shape at right angles to its body. The forewing is deeply notched and the hindwing is divided into three fringed lobes resembling plumes." It really helps to have the small pictures at the back of the book, which more closely resemble what you are expecting to see whenever you view a moth in real life.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2004-03-22

This is one of the most remarkable books that I have encountered in a long long time. An artist friend who is aware of my tripartite interest in science, technology, and the arts grabbed me in the cafeteria last month & said that I "had to take a look at this". She was absolutely right. No, this ISN'T a scientific treatise on moths or a discourse on the natural history of insects, and one certainly wouldn't want to take it into the field to identify even the moths of the relatively small area sampled, BUT THAT ISN'T THE POINT! Instead one is treated to stunning imagery of animals that most of us either ignore entirely or slaughter with "bug-zappers" and poisons & seldom if ever grant the benefit of a second glance. Thanks to Scheer my children & I have had some very pleasant sessions simply sitting & turning the pages & the most frequent comment is the title of this review. "Wow!" indeed. Also Bravo to Scheer for giving us a wonderful look at a little seen & greatly under-appreciated subject.

This book has beautiful dreamy pictures in it. It would be a perfect bedtime read. However, it is not very realistic in that Old Brown Bear chases a blue moth all the way to the top of the trees and lands on a cloud. With the naiveté of young children, a person might want to think twice about reading this book to their child, or at least explain to the child that landing on a cloud can only happen in make-believe land.

One of the miracles of the National Pastime is the way it can tie us to our home teams with a blood-knot of allegiance; we live with them in good times ... and die with them the rest of the time. Of course, being a Cleveland Indians fan over the course of the last half-century has demanded a good deal more of the dying. And Terry Pluto should know--he's covered the Tribe for years as an award-winning sports columnist for the Akron Beacon Journal. On the surface, his memoir is a solid baseball book, a fascinating tour through a historic franchise and some of the more interesting characters who've worn its colors: Lou Sockalexis (the original Cleveland Indian), Tris Speaker, Bob Feller, Lou Boudreau, Larry Doby (the first black in the American League), Rocky Colavito, owner Bill Veeck, and on to today's Omar Vizquel and Manny Ramirez. But like the best baseball books, it's about more than the game; it's about what the game means to us, how it ties generations together, and, on the most intimate level, how it links a father to his son.

In the case of Pluto and his father, the link is a complex, sometimes tense one of clashing generations often played out in front of the TV set, beside the radio, or in the stands--and it's one that the son bravely analyzes. "For us," he writes, "it was easier to go to a baseball game and pour salt on popcorn rather than old wounds." Ultimately, Pluto figures out that it is within the rhythms of the game that a son, over time, comes to know--and to accept--his father. Which is another one of baseball's miracles. --Jeff Silverman

            Book Description

            * First time in paperback *

            A son, a father, a baseball team . . .

This memoir will touch the heart of any baseball fan who has ever shared a love for the game with a parent or child.

Sportswriter Terry Pluto grew up with the Cleveland Indians. He also grew up with a stern, distant father who was often difficult to understand, let alone love. All they shared, it often seemed, were a pair of seats in the Municipal Stadium grandstands and a steadfast devotion to the Tribe—a woeful team that for decades did little to earn that devotion.

By 1997, so much had changed. The Indians were in the World Series. Terry Pluto was in the press box covering the national event. Tom Pluto was trapped, nearly mute, in a body now crippled by stroke. But father and son were, finally, coming closer together.

This book traces the parallel stories of father and son and the team they shared, through joy and struggle (onfield and off), resulting in a timeless story about reconciliation.

For so many people, baseball remains an important bridge across generations, sometimes the only topic of conversation when all other topics seem threatening. This story celebrates our ability to make that connection.

5 out of 5 stars More a story of father and son........2006-05-29

Terry Pluto has written an excellent book and as an Indians fan for 70 years I can easily relate to his personal story and to the history given of the Cleveland Indians. It is an excellent history for the most part, written as only a sports writer can, though he contradicts a couple other writers a few times. I espeically like the emphasis on the heroes of my childhood, Lou Boudreau, Bob Feller, Larry Doby and others on the famous 1948 team. I disagree with his contention that the l948 championship team was not one of the greatest championship teams ever and this is disproved in the detailed book An Epic Season by David Kaiser. Also for a really complete history of the Indians before and leading to 1948, Franklin Lewis wrote a book titled Clevland Indians published in 1949. Sadly, I don't know if that one can still be found or not, even through Amazon. It is more a history. Nonetheless, Our Tribe: A Baseball Memoir is a very good read and brings back the agony of the countless opportunities that former owners of the Indians let get by them. And the new owners may be doing that again today. :( As a personal story it is superb.

5 out of 5 stars like a Sudden Sam McDowell fastball.......2004-10-22

Absolutely wonderful weaving of an at times diffcult father-son relationship (congrats for telling it like it was!) and the history of the Cleveland Indians. Never gets bogged down in year-to-year stats and his way of comparing Shoeless Joe and Manny Ramirez's careers was brilliant. The stories about Manny are priceless.

Like all his other sports books, Terry Pluto is easily the best sportswriter on the planet.

            5 out of 5 stars A Touching Book.......2004-05-30

This is a fantastic book for any Indians fan who grew up watching games at the old Stadium. It's for all of us who grew up rooting for a sad team who had never won anything before and was never likely to do so in the future. It helps us to remember those days when the important thing wasn't how good the team was or if they had a chance at the Series, but rather spending time with our fathers watching the game. Maybe, just maybe, this book will help us to remember what is really important once again.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for all fathers and sons.......2003-07-24

This book is as much a story about a son and his relationship with his father as it is about baseball, and tells each of those stories wonderfully. For basball fans it is an entertaining history of the Cleveland Indians and is full of colorful players, managers, and even owners. From the perspective of this one baseball team, the reader has a ring side seat on how much our country, society, and professional sports have changed and grown over the last 75 plus years. Just from the standpoint of the baseball Terry Puto is as good as Ken Burns or George Will.

But the story within the story is really about the author and his father. That relationship is one that is full of joy and sadness, wonderful memories and yet regrets. The author comes to better understand and appreciate his father after a stroke makes it impossible to talk to his father. In a cruel irony, when the time came that the author was ready and wanted to share stories and talk to his father, he was not able to.
All fathers and sons should read this book.

A final comment on Terry Pluto's writing style. I have read three of Mr Pluto's books and appreciate the way he writes in a clean, no non-sense style and yet fills his books with so much detail and color.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a great baseball book.......2003-06-09

This is a superb book because it goes beyond being a great sports book. Terry Pluto's weaving of his relationship with his father into his lifetime love of the Cleveland Indians makes it a book that readers will think about long after they've finished reading it. It's not necessary to be a Tribe fan to enjoy this book. I'd even go as far to say that a reader need not be a baseball fan to feel empathy and self-reflection on his or her parent-child relationship, regardless of whether the person is the parent or the child. I've also read the author's "Loose Balls", a wonderful look back at the American Basketball Association, and recommend that to those who remember the ABA (go Oakland Oaks!) and to those who weren't around to enjoy those years.
