Family Outing is two books in one: a memoir of Chastity Bono's experience coming out as a lesbian to her famous parents and a look at the difficulties and triumphs that are part of every uncloseted homosexual's family life, with narratives drawn from interviews with members of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). Sometimes the two projects work against each other, but for the most part, Bono is right in assuming that her story reflects something larger in the culture and that others' stories, in turn, bear on her own experience. Readers skimming for intimate details about the mother-daughter conflict between Cher and Chastity won't be disappointed by Bono's sensitively written account. For a long time, Cher overlooked the troubling evidence of her daughter's emerging sexual identity: "Instead, she focused on superficial issues that bothered her: my short hair, my mannish clothes, my weight." Their relationship deteriorated, and it was Sonny to whom Chastity eventually confided; ironically, the father who offered immediate, warm acceptance of his daughter's lesbianism would later sponsor the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act in the House of Representatives. --Regina Marler

Excellent Guidebook - You Won't Feel So Alone.......2005-11-23
Of all the books I have read pertaining to coming out, this is without a doubt the most informative and useful guide avaliable for the entire family. A friend suggested I read it after she came out to me and I'm very glad that I did. If you really want to understand the entire process of realizing you are gay all the way through coming out and beyond, you need to read this book.
This book is not only great for gays and lesbians, but their family and friends as well. Through facts and testimonies of many different people (including Chastity and her parents Sonny and Cher), this book lays out the cold raw truth of the difficulties and pains of coming out to family and friends. It's brutally honest, and even though some of the stories may not be what we want to hear, it's the truth and we all need to understand that. Hopefully this book will help someone out there come to terms with themselves or someone they love who is struggling with coming out.
I truly enjoyed hearing about Chastity's experience and how her mother struggled with accepting her daughter.
This book is a must read, I don't know any other way to put it. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK.
A good guide, and bio but.......2003-03-20
This is a good "double" book--a coming out guide and a biography of Chastity Bono in one. Written in a straight-forward, clear manner and peppered with interviews from other out gays and lesbians, "Family Outing" is ultimately eye-opening and supportive.
However, I didn't give it five stars because it was often repetitive (i.e. a blurb about denying oneself, then a section of interviews from people who denied their true selves, then Bono's account of how she denied what she really was, and then a section reiterating why you shouldn't deny who you really are) and I would have liked to learn more about Bono's life in addition to her struggles coming out of the closet. (But I guess there's more of her life in her other book, The End of Innocence? I guess I'll have to check that one out).
Much-needed Resource and Guide.......2001-07-11
It is a shame that this book, along with Betty DeGeneres' "Love, Ellen" book, weren't available 20-30 years ago. These books could have saved thousands of gays and lesbians and their parents much pain and anguish. Coming out is never easy, but this book and Betty's can help to serve as a great starting point. Chastity talks about her own coming-out process; most importantly, she includes coming-out testimonies from ordinary, every-day folks. Sensitively written, this book is a valuable tool. To those who cannot bring themselves to disclose, buy this book for help and guidance. To those who cannot bring themselves to accept, buy this book (and Betty's too), and become enlightened.
Isn't frilly and foolish ... exceptional.......2001-07-06
Family Outing is an exceptional book. Chastity Bono is real, honest, and upfront. Not only does she tell us what it was like to "come out" to her famous parents (Sonny and Cher), but tells the stories of many ordinary, down-to-earth people. Chastity comes across as the type of person you could curl up on the sofa and just shoot the breeze. Just a great person.
Ms. Bono has written a book that isn't depressing, isn't frilly and foolish, yet is emotionally bound without all the goos and gaas.
I recommend Family Outing highly. Some day it'll be compulsive reading in schools. Excellent job, Chastity.
A wonderful resource.......2001-02-02
I couldn't have had a better guide for my youth! I read this book before coming out to my family in high school. I have to admit, it was the most helpful of all the resources i looked into. It was so wonderful to know that there were others out there just like me. This book was also an inspiration for my mother after i came out. I suggest that anyone struggling with their family during this particularly difficult time in their lives read this book and pass it on!
Book Description
This is the first book on one of sport's greatest stars, a portrait of a man who has dedicated his life to becoming the greatest quarterback ever. It's the story of John Wayne in Cleats, a father of four who led his team to Super Bowl glory at age 37.

Excellent summary of #7's NFL life and career.......2000-08-12
This book is a great read for Bronco and Elway fans of any age. It chronicles the life of John Elway from the time he was a child, through college and his joining of the Broncos, to his victory against the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. Black and white pictures are included with each chapter, and the center section 14 pages of color photos, as well. The author (Clay Lattimer) is a sports writer for the Rocky Mountain News, and he also draws on Sports Illustrated, Becket Football Monthly, and even Newsweek, as well as several other sports sources, so he packs a lot of information, dates, and statistics into each chapter. He also packs a lot of superfluous detail, too -- the writing meanders a bit and doesn't always stay on focus. But hey -- if you're an Elway fan (like me), who cares? The book is fun to read even in the places where it goes off topic. If there was such a thing as a "definitive" biography of an Elway, this would probably be it. If you're an Elway fan, get this book and enjoy it!
A must for the Elway fan.......1998-01-11
John Elway: Armed and Dangerous, by Clay Latimer, is a must for the John Elway and Denver Bronco fans. It is an easy to read book on Elway's career and personal life filled with quotes from players and unknown stories about other football greats. It sometimes drags a little as it gets off the subject quite a bit.

What marches this amply illustrated tribute downfield with the verve of a two-minute drill is the collection of tribute offerers themselves. John Elway's 10 chapters are built on the testimony of 10 witnesses--Bronco players and opponents--to the future Hall of Famer quarterback's excellence, longevity, creativity, and coolness: the lineup includes Denver coaches Dan Reeves and Mike Shanahan; teammates Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, and Ed McCaffrey; and opposition field marshalls Brett Favre and Jim Kelly. Under game conditions, all would be assessed yardage for piling it on; then again, an elegy's game plan is to praise without penalty, and praise they certainly do.
Still, Elway offers its perspectives, none more cogent than that of defensive lineman Neil Smith, who spent nine seasons as a Chief huffing and puffing after Elway before ultimately joining him in Denver. "I had the most sacks (15) against John," Smith admits proudly, "and it's probably because he took me to another level when I played against him... But after you'd sack him, really crush him, he'd just get up and grin... and come back and throw a touchdown on you. That hurt." It also captures Elway's brilliance in a nutshell: his skills made the game better, and his spirit never let him give up. If that doesn't deserve appreciation, nothing in sports does, and Elway, like a crafty receiver, catches both halves of that equation quite nicely. --Jeff Silverman

Excellent Perspective.......2004-06-03
This is one of the best books one can find about John Elway. Sure, it misses much of the autobiographical details, but it gets down to business quite well, distilling John's football life into its essential components. Its strength arises from diversity of perspective. Not only do you hear Mike Shannahan's memories and opinions, but also Dan Reeve's and the words have a healing effect for us long term fans. Likewise, hearing not only from key Bronco team mates but also from his rivals gives one the complete story.
Was a birthday present.......2002-05-03
I got this book from my wife as a birthday present, and immediately sat down and read it cover to cover. I knew a lot of the info in the book already, having been a Bronco fan since 1972, but it did refresh a lot of old (and somewhat painful) memories. I feel this book is a "must have" for any Bronco/Elway fan.
good keepsake.......1999-11-06
Interesting comments from other players, but not a lot of new information for fans who have followed John's career. Nice book to have for a sports collection.
This is a Great book for all Broncos fans. A++++.......1999-05-28
This book (Biography of John Elway) shows not only History of John Elway, but also of his Teamates and other Players around the NFL . This book is loaded with Players, Coaches, and the Owner of the Denver Broncos.
Excellent summary of John Elways career by others.......1999-03-21
This book offers commentary and descriptins of John Elway by other NFL teammates, players, and coaches. Included are chapters by Mike Shanahan, Terrell Davis, Brett Favre, Dan Reeves, and Clay Matthews (who played for the Cleveland Browns, against the Broncos in 3 AFC Championship games). Each individual's comments are very interesting, as they all offer a different perspective.
The only drawback is that the book appears to have been completed before Super Bowl 33; so Dan Reeves does not offer his views on coaching *against* Elway in a Super Bowl. A minor critique, though, as he still provides an interesting read.
The book is also filled with many excellent photos from Elway's NFL and college days.

Elway's a winner!.......2002-11-06
This book lets the reader know what Elway's life was like from childhood to adulthood. It gives glimpses of him as a person as well as a football player. One important theme is that he hates to lose. He states that "one important thing I have noticed about people who are winners is that, to them, losing is always temporary."
I enjoyed reading this book very much. Once I started it, I really did get into it. It was hard to put it down, even though I was supposed to be sleeping.
The book's layout was really nice. Text boxes were set aside for John Elway's words, making me feel like I was truly talking to him. Each page had colorful pictures. This helped me see what he looked like throughout his life. I also enjoyed seeing the different uniforms he wore.
Another reason I liked the book is the humor that Elway uses throughout it. He makes fun of himself and the sthings he sometimes did. I enjoy reading humorous books.
I also enjoy reading about a football player. His early life was interesting to me because it seems to be a lot like mine. Reading about football players is a good way to encourage myself to do well in my sport.
I admire Elway's opinion that family is important. I know that my family means the world to me. During tough times, John Elway could rely on the love of his family. I enjoy knowing that he is a family man.
I think Elway could have done a better job describing his Super Bowl games. He didn't give a good description of the Super Bowl games he won or lost. There is only one text box with Super Bowl statistics.
If someone enjoys reading about sports they would enjoy reading this book. It could help an athlete to understand what it takes to be successful in the sport of football. Anyone who enjoys reading humorous books would enjoy reading this book. I highly recommend this book.
John Elway was raised to be a winner........1999-08-14
This book tells about John Elway's life from the beginning. He was raised to be a winner, but he also tells us that winning isn't everything. I liked how he showed that everything wasn't always easy and perfect for him. He got in trouble like any other kid. He also tells what it was like to feel the sting of losing in the superbowl. A billboard in Denver read: "How does it feel to embarrass a city?" The book also tells about his family life growing up. He mentions how he is eleven minutes older than his twin sister. All in all, I think this was a wonderful book, especially for those interested in football and the Denver Broncos.

Excellent tribute to the Elway years in Denver.......2004-08-13
I was lucky to be in Denver when Mr. Litton was signing his book. Very gracious man and his book is a must for any Denver Bronco fan, and especially Elway fans. Mr. Litton is a sports cartoonist for the Rocky Mountain News in Denver and has covered the Elway years from the beginning through his recent induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This book even has a few never-before published cartoons. I would recommend the book highly.

An intriguing hybrid, Elway, a coffee-table tribute to one of football's most exciting quarterbacks, is part autobiography, part photographic celebration, and all MTV packaging; like an Elway comeback drive, it moves quickly and is filled with exuberance. The pictures, especially of the Bronco's Super Bowl XXXII upset of the heavily favored Packers, are stunning, and if Elway gets to offer his share of clich&eactue;s and life philosophies well protected from the onslaught of any editorial blitz, it's the images that are the heroes here; the words, like pulling guards, exist only to move things forward without drawing much attention to themselves. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
In Elway, John shares his life in pictures and words. Joined by award winning photographer Marc Serota (Mario Lemieux: The Final Period and Marino: On the Record), Elway captures the incredible moments of professional jubilation, as well as the private moments with family, friends and teammates.

The Elway Story.......2001-10-11
The name of the book is Elway because it is about him. This book is a good book because he tells about his whole life. There are a lot of good pictures in this book. This is a good book because John Elway wrote it. I like when he broke his leg. It shows you how much he loves the game. The only thing they should of had more of is touch down passes. This book is for all ages.
Excellent pictoral history of Elway's life!.......1999-12-29
If I was going to rate my personal enjoyment of this book, I'd give it 5 stars, easily -- 6, if I could. However, the critic in me did notice some improprieties. The book reports a few minor factual mistakes. For example, the inner jacket flap mistakenly reports that Elway will be entering (in 1998) his 15th NFL season, when in fact it was his 16th. Elway himself at one point confuses the sequence of plays when recalling "The Drive" in the 1987 AFC Championship. He also claims to have been ahead at halftime in his first two Super Bowls, even when, a few lines later, he recalls that in his 2nd Super Bowl (against the Washington Redskins) the opposing team took the lead in the second quarter. The reason for these indiscretions is more due to the format of the book than a problem with Elway's or the editor's memories. This book is autobiography only in the loosest of senses; the text is very brief, and in it Elway offers his views on his own childhood, his career with the Broncos, the current state of the NFL, and a smattering of personal life philosophy as well. It is not presented as a comprehensive life story, but more like an extended interview/monologue, and no one but the "statistics hounds" (like me) will even notice the rare and incidental factual errors. Some of the text also appears to have been lifted from earlier interviews; at one point, while describing how he dodges defensive ends, Elway refers to a game he played "the other day" in Minnesota, yet at the publication date (early 1998) Elway had not played a game in Minnesota for a year and a half. This book is also very expensive, compared to corresponding books of its type. However, the aforementioned criticisms are very minor, and if you can get past the cover price, and are an Elway fan, you will love this book. Despite being brief, the text is written entirely by John Elway himself (making the book unique, in that no other book offers a wholly first-person perspective of Elway), and does cover his entire life up until the publishing date. The paucity of text in this oversized book also makes the numerous photographs stand out all the more, and the photographs are beautiful -- like the text, they range all the way from Elway's childhood to his triumph in Super Bowl XXXII. Despite the criticisms offered above, this is a very fun book to read and glance over for the Elway fan. As I said in the beginning, the "objective" side of me noticed a few improprieties in the book, but the "fan" side of me didn't care and loved reading it anyway. Highly recommended.
Photographic celebration of John Elway.......1999-09-12
This book is simply excellent, combining amazing photographs with commentary from the great man himself.
SuperBowl XXXII is extensively covered and there are photos from Johns personal life, growing up and present, with his family and around his home. You get to hear John's views on things away from football also.
I just wish this book could have been bigger and with more photos from other key points in John's carear, especially the Denver-Cleveland AFC Champ series which are not given enough depth.
This is a great summary of #7's life........1999-07-16
For all you Elway fans out there, this book is a keeper. With great photos and words coming right from John himself, you'll love the book.
Pricey pictorial review of what makes Elway tick........1998-12-09
For Elway fans, this book provides insight on the athlete's personal philosophy, career, and family life. Unfortunately, many of the photos are grainy--they look like assorted 3x5s and wallet photos that have been enlarged to fit a coffee table size book. The sparse text has also been enlarged into huge bold font to justify the price and size of this book.

A great book.......2004-04-27
I like the book because the auther descibed the characters well. He descibed Nick the main character perfictly. It had so much imagrey.
The best part of the book is when Nick Lighter fell asleep with the jersey on during a monday night foot ball game and he found himself staring at sixty eight thousan fans at mile high stadium. He was Broncos legond John Elway.
The Describsion was great. The green grass, tons of fans, and the bright lights over the stadium. I like the conflict Nick aginst the best defence in football.
Quarter Exchanging!.......1999-12-01
Nick being his favorite quarterback (John Elway) for a night is very good! The whole story is creative! I ~WOULD~ recommend this book!
Why I liked this book!.......1999-01-01
The story of how Nick became John Elway for a night is quite good! Although, I am not a football fan, I liked the story because of the funny situations, and the true feelings. I could understand what it would be like to be Nick, and his efforts in vain to alert his friends to the change! Also, I liked the way it switched from Nick's point of view to that of his friends watching the game. All in all, it was a very good book!
