High-life houses for an aristocrat........2000-05-17
Elton John is an aristocrat, not only because the Queen said so. He demonstrates this in every day life, in the way he admits his weaknesses, in his involvement for beautiful causes. His house on French Riviera is a jewell. It's almost "too much". But "too much" is never enough for Elton. Thanks to the great pictures from this book you will discover a yellow castle between blue sky, deep blue sea and green grass. White structure of the house creates a contrast with blue, green and yellow. These colours could have been chosen by David Hockney. Original style of this house was respected. Flowers are every where. Furniture is on line with the overall "villegiature" style. Don't dream "too much", this "Saint-Jean Cap-Ferrat" life-style has a price. But who talked about money, here? Not Elton, for sure. This is, again, a demonstration of the noble qualities of that man. Never in the whole book, you will find any decoration detail that could make you think it is here to impress people or to demonstrate power. What a paradox! this modern excentric, in the tradition on XVIIIth century english excentricity, never looks arrogant. None of his crazy demonstrations of "luxe" make you feel bad. The Atlanta house is more interesting because of the beautiful furniture and made to order closets for collections of ... everything. This book is a tribute to pleasure, good taste (yes!) and high-life. I learned this word from Johnny Weissmuller in Acapulco (pie de la cuesta beach), just before he died. I think it is quite appropriate to describe what these houses are made for.
Cool Book.......2000-04-09
This book has awesome pictures of Elton John's homes, it focuses on the flowers in his houses. This book would be great to put on a coffe table, and a must for an Elton fan. I highly recommend it!
Beautiful coffee-table book........1999-04-16
Excellent pictorial of an extravagant livestyle! Hard to belive, though, that there is a gross misprint on page 16-- the lyrics from "Your Song" are attributed to "Mona Lisa & Mad Hatters"! Oops!
My New Favorite!.......1999-04-15
Wow ... "amazing" is the best word I can come up with! I have been looking at decorating books for about a year since I bought my dream house. I stumbled upon this book, and have since bought copies for my Mom, my in-laws, my best friend, my gardeners, my designer, ...! I guess I am now their best customer! I plan to give a copy to my designer and say "Here, do this!"
Need I say more?

A Wonderful Addition to Any Golf Library.......2003-08-02
In the contemporary golf world where Tiger Woods receives the lion's share of attention, cable television channels abound, and made-for-television golf events are presented on a regular basis, most people do not recall the television show that was the forefather of the modern golf small screen presentation. In the summer of 1960, Monroe Spaght, the president of Shell U.S.A, watched a television production of All-Star Golf, the first made-for-television golf program. The show featured 18-hole matches between some of the top American players of the era. Initially, the matches were filmed in the Chicago area, but soon other courses around the country became involved. While Spaght found promise in the idea of golf on television, he saw the potential for something far beyond a match between two participants. Capitalizing on the worldwide presence of Shell's parent company, Royal Dutch Shell, he envisioned matches that would be played on the great courses of the world by the greatest golfers in the world. Thus was born Shell's Wonderful World of Golf.
GENE SARAZEN AND SHELL'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GOLF, by Al Barkow with Mary Ann Sarazen, is the story of the beginnings of a television event that continues to be presented today. For over 40 years, the greatest golfers in the world have traveled the globe for individual matches that are a combination of golf, travelogue and history. Perhaps more than any program, Shell's Wonderful World of Golf has impacted and shaped the golf that most of us watch on television today.
Shell officials were not well versed in the nuances and history of golf. They hired Herbert Warren Wind as the show's golf writer and consultant. Wind had already achieved recognition as a golf writer and historian. He had written for The New Yorker, Sports Illustrated and had coauthored with Ben Hogan the classic golf instruction book, FIVE LESSONS: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf. Wind was the man who would select golf courses around the world for match sites and could also suggest foreign golfers, many of whom were unknown in America, as participants. He also suggested that golf legend Gene Sarazen be the host of the television show.
Barkow has provided the reader with a brief biography of Sarazen, a golf icon of the 20s and 30s. Born Eugenio Saraceni, Sarazen changed his name because "Saraceni sounded more like a violin player than a golfer." He became the first professional golfer to win all four major golf championships. He scored a spectacular and rare double eagle to clinch victory in the 1935 Masters. It was a shot that propelled the tournament and Sarazen into national prominence. Sarazen was perfect for the commentator role. His knowledge of the game, the players, and the courses around the world made him an invaluable asset to Shell. Sarazen would ultimately host nine years of programs covering 92 matches in 48 countries. His match with Henry Cotton, played at St. Andrews, the birthplace of golf, became a classic and can still be seen on The Golf Channel.
The most fascinating portion of the saga of SHELL'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GOLF can be found in the descriptions of the production of the individual television shows. Contemporary golf fans have become complacent with modern technology and its impact on televised golf. Golf matches even avail themselves of lights to allow for evening matches. In the 1960s television technology was far more primitive. Two days were often required to film one 18-hole match. Players were sometimes forced to wait twenty minutes between shots as cameras, cables and crowds were repositioned for the next shot. On occasion, because an actual shot was not adequately filmed, producers had to include phony shots that were filmed separately from the actual match. To read these chapters is to understand how far televised golf and indeed all televised sports have come.
This book is a wonderful addition to any golf library, but it's also a little bit more. It reminds us of an era when television and the entertainment industry were still in their infant stages. How they were able to grow both artistically and technologically is the message that can be learned from SHELL'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GOLF and its progeny.

Comfortable Conversation with Golfing Great.......2006-09-12
Nelson truly is a golfing gem, one that gets somewhat lost in all the current player hype. But this is likely due to media hype, not the players; they are humble around the like of Lord Byron, and most if not all big names play the King's, the Bear's and the Nelson's tournaments.
Here is record of his life and it truly sounds like the man we have learned to like and hear on TV. Downhome, country boy, who really wanted to earn enough money to buy a ranch, which he did. In doing so, he had some amazing golf, the statistics and some of the records are still there. Might be so for quite some time.
Fascinating how he is part of game most don't know, i.e. invent of good golf shoes and Footjoy connection and also the golf umbrella. Around the Hogan's since caddying youth, this guy is legend worth becoming familiar with. His humility, grace and fervor for the game are truly a treat to read about. The tournament that bears his name is what he refers to as biggest golfing thing that ever happened to him, for the joy of helping the kids. Truly an athleter to be emulated.
Worth your time.......2003-01-07
This is simply a straightforward account of Nelson's life by The Man himself. It's primary focus is his poor-as-dirt childhood and rise to stardom on the PGA Tour, culminating in The Streak of eleven straight wins in 1945 (he retired the next year). His television work is also covered, as is the death of his wife of 50 years and subsequent remarriage, but the primary focus is on his rise to stardom and retirement to ranching. It turns out that he doesn't have hemophilia as I'd always heard, nor did he retire because his "nervous stomach" couldn't take the stress of competition. The big virtue of the book is that it's written in a homey style that makes you feel as though Nelson is right there speaking to you in his Texas twang. It was written with assistance from his second wife, and it reads as though she must have been transcribing tapes. There is very little discussion of swing theory and no tips to help your game, but it's fascinating if you have an interest in what it took to make a living in professional golf in the 1930s and 1940s. It should be required reading for today's pampered pros who make more for one fifth-place finish than Nelson made in his entire career as one of the all-time greats. He comes across as an extremely decent, religious man that you would've liked to have known.

For a writer, formula can be dangerous. For a marketer, there's no harm in perpetuating what works. Martin Davis, a marketer par excellence in this niche, continues his run of golf tribute aces with a lovely appreciation of Lord Byron of the links. Like Davis's previous oversized homages to Ben Hogan and Bobby Jones, Byron Nelson is as big as a Tiger Woods drive, and as thoughtful as Ben Crenshaw eyeing a putt. Crenshaw doesn't do any putting here, but he does contribute a companion forward to the astute, if friendly, essays by Dave Anderson, Tom Watson, Nick Seitz, and Dan Jenkins. While the volume is large enough to accommodate the totality of Nelson's long, stellar career--a U.S. Open victory to accompany his pair of Masters and PGA titles--it zooms in strongly on his remarkable 1945 feat of 11 consecutive tournament victories, a standard matched only by Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak in its unapproachable majesty.
Book Description
A lavishly illustrated, magnificently produced celebration of Byron Nelson, who was recently honored with the PGA's Lifetime Achievement Award--from The American Golfer, Inc., creators of the hugely successful book
The Hogan Mystique.
Byron Nelson, now 84 years old and living in Roanoke, Texas, set one of the most extraordinary records in sports history. In 1945 he won 18 tournaments, including 11 in a row. His record still stands today. Credited with developing the modern swing and recognized as one of the finest putters of all time, golf's true "gentleman" is a much-admired hero in the golfing world. Yet, little has been written about him and his remarkable techniques. Until now.
Byron Nelson presents the full story of Nelson's life and career, chronicling his path from his days as a caddie for Ben Hogan in Fort Worth, Texas, through the 54 PGA events he won as a professional golfer. With a foreword by Ben Crenshaw and essays by renowned sportswriters Dave Anderson, Nick Seitz, and Dan Jenkins and golfer Tom Watson, as well as analysis by Ken Venturi, and stats by Sal Johnson,
Byron Nelson pays tribute to Nelson's lasting impact on the game.
Printed in Italy in six colors throughout and featuring elegant black-and-white photographs and a special eight-page double gatefold,
Byron Nelson is the perfect gift for anybody who loves golf and appreciates the history of the game.

Visually striking layout... fantastic photos of Nelson and some of golf's greatest from that era. Book initially requires sequential reading, then opens up later into short, choppy highlights of tournaments where Byron prevailed. Makes a wonderful book to place somewhere visitors might want to browse through without committing to tons of reading. GREAT GIFT for a golfer.

Before titanium drivers, before oversized heads and bubble shafts, before electronic systems to tell you how far you are from the pin, golf was much the same game it is today. The lessons Harvey Penick taught in the pre-gadget days still stand. The golf swing is basically the same, and Penick could teach it better than anybody. For most of his life, he never intended to publish his Little Red Book, a notebook of golf wisdom and anecdotes that he compiled with the idea that he'd pass it on to his son. But, for the sake of history, it's a good thing that he changed his mind. Contained in its 175 pages is just about all you need to know about golf from a technical standpoint, along with Penick's priceless memories of working with famous pros, teaching absolute nobodies to get the ball in the air, and finding a horde of bat guano and hauling it across town in a pickup truck to fertilize his golf course. This book makes you feel good about playing golf, that you're part of something steeped in ritual and mystery and tradition, and that the game was played perfectly well before perimeter-weighted, graphite-shafted irons came along.
Book Description
THE CLASSIC BOOK OF GOLF WISDOM FROM THE GAME'S GREATEST TEACHER
The Little Red Book has become required reading for all players and fans of the game of golf, from beginners to seasoned pros. The legendary Harvey Penick, who began his golfing career as a caddie in Austria, Texas, at the age of eight, worked with an amazing array of champions over the course of nearly a century, dispensing invaluable wisdom to golfers of every level. Penick simplifies the technical jargon of other instructional books and communicates the very essence of the game, and his Little Red Book is full of inspiration and homespun wisdom that reflects at once his great love of golf as well as his great talent for teaching.
Customer Reviews:
There is a lot...........2007-06-13
It's a good book, but you have to read it more one time to discover in some cases what Harvey is trying to say you. The book has a lot of pearls.
Well worth it.......2007-03-09
Harvey's little book is well worth it. I am new to golf, but I found the metaphors and stories to be very helpful. It is not as direct as many golf books, but it is wise. I found good information on the swing, bunker play, practice, and many others. Penick has firm opinions on many golf matters, but these are generated by a lifetime of golf and observation. If you have been whacking away on the driving range, this book could really help. It helped me to stay focused on fundamentals. John
Harvey Penick's Little Red Book.......2007-03-08
One of the best teaching books available. Great Humble man that I got to meet.
son-in-law.......2007-02-21
hard to buy for son-in-law keeps this book handy for re-reading chapters. was happy he is enjoying it hope it helps his golf game.
I don't know what all the fuss is about.......2007-01-17
This is a very famous book, and so I looked forward to reading it with a lot of hope that it would help my game. I found it to be pretty close to useless, and would certainly never recommend it to anyone. It does, however, do a good job of exalting Harvey Penick, which may have been his purpose in publishing it.

Interesting facts, not much of a read though........2007-02-08
The book is an interesting chronicle of Byron's 1945 season, however the writing is rather dry. I think it could have been much more interesting if the author had more of a flair. I have read a lot of golf books, and this just left me slightly underwhelmed.

Byron Nelson fired off one of sport's amazing runs in 1945 when he won 14 consecutive tournaments, 18 on the year. Throughout his career, he kept a statistical record, which is partially reproduced in facsimile in The Little Black Book. More valuable, however, are the commentaries and little lessons Lord Byron has added. Like most golf wisdom, much of it is obvious, but when a voice from the pantheon counsels that his way of playing was "Keep it straight, keep it safe," mere mortals would be foolish not to listen.
