Book Description

In this compelling memoir, Brooke Shields talks candidly about her experience with postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter, and provides millions of women with an inspiring example of recovery hen Brooke Shields welcomed her newborn daughter, Rowan Francis, into the world, something unexpected followed-a crippling depression. Now, for the first time ever, in Down Came the Rain, Brooke talks about the trials, tribulations, and finally the triumphs that occurred before, during, and after the birth of her daughter.

1 out of 5 stars I'd rather smell diapers..........2007-10-16

than read the rest of this book. Despite her Princeton degree (which I think calls into question the caliber of the school), Brooke Shields has all the writing skill of the average 6 year-old. She is out of touch with the real world; she is a privileged, pampered, sniveling wench. Her complaints of powdery CLEAN diaper smell, having to take a crap, and having to be cleaned by a nurse because she was too damn lazy to take care of herself, all smacks of ego and elitism. I wish she had jumped out of the window, or swallowed the bottle of pills than taken taken pen to paper. I want my money back as I couldn't stomach one more chapter of this drivel.

I will however keep it on my bookshelf, because whenever I do feel depressed, this book with indeed be the antidote. For THAT, I thank Brooke Shields. What a hilarious, mad-cap adventure it is!

5 out of 5 stars depicts PPD perfectly.......2007-09-30

I, too, had severe PPD. I, too, have written a book about it. This is 50 times better than Marie Osmond's book. If you are gettting it because it's written by a celebrity..well I suppose that's appealing to some people...but this was not like Marie's book in that regard. Brooke comes across as a regular person. PPD is not picky about who it afflicts. Brooke is real and open and brutally honest. She helped me identify some feelings I'd not been able to express. Thank you, Brooke, for doing such a great job! I have no idea what you could've done better. In my opinion, this was dead on and flawless. If you don't buy my book, buy Brooke's!

3 out of 5 stars Just OK - not really that much on PPD.......2007-09-10

It felt like the PPD was discussed very briefly and most of the book was her telling her story of how she grew up, how she wanted a baby, how hard it was to get there, how she missed her old life, how she then loved her baby, how cute her baby is, how she balanced her career and motherhood, her relationship with her mother, yada yada yada. I certainly wouldn't read this book to learn about PPD. It is just an easy read book if you are interested in looking into the lives of celebrities.

5 out of 5 stars Changed my life!!.......2007-09-04

I'm so glad i bought this book. I was suffering from postpartum depression, and I was ashamed of the thoughts that i was thinking and why i didnt feel a bond with my daughter... I read the book and it made me realize I needed to do something about it. GREAT BOOK!!

5 out of 5 stars Honestly Written.......2007-08-15

Honestly written, so truthful,I am sure it was as painful to write as it was to experience. This had to be. For Tom (Jack*ff) Cruise to go spurting off his ideas and opinions(opinions obviously not solicited from Brook or her husband) was not only in poor taste, but dangerous. What is wrong with him? Not that I think America at large listens to Tom, I for one will not buy any paper, book, see any movie or show that endorses him. As for his poor wife katie Holmes she looks miserable and should run....not walk away from this marriage. He is as lousy as a bedside doctor as he is an actor. Matt Lauer should have b*tched slapped him when he got in his face. While I myself had uneventful pregnancies and no problems after(NO blues, thank God)It is thoughtful and honest and gives other women hope. God Bless Brook and her children.

3 out of 5 stars WHy is this book worth so much? .......2005-04-13

The facts:
1. A photogenic baby is pushed into modeling by her controlling, obsessed mother.
2. She turns into a lovely child who is a regular child model
3. When she turns 12, she morphs into a teen who can look older than her years and so, based on her looks, she becomes the hot model of the moment.
4. Great photographers get some great photos of her, but some of them toe the line between sexiness and child porn. Is is "art" or "porn" when a child poses topless in a bathtub, looking seductively at the camera? Is it cute or borderline dangerous to have a young girl play a child prostiture, potentially encouraging the fantasies of pedophiles? These are some of the real and controversial issues surrounding the career of Ms. Shields.
5. But she never became (yet) a world class actress. She was simply gorgeous.
And this is enough to form an obsession...and boost up the price of this book? Guess so. People can be so strange.
Perhaps it is no surprise that her latest book, "DOwn Came the Rain" focuses on her bout with postpartum depression after her child, Rowan, was born. Must be pretty strange to have a daughter of your own and then remember how odd your OWN childhood was....or was she ever allowed to be a normal child? Can't remember a time when she didn't seem to be working, working, working...

5 out of 5 stars The Brooke Book 1982 Version.......2004-09-11

I bought The Brooke Book 1982 version from Amazon used. I have to say, it's a great book. It's mostly pictures, though. I recommend it to any Brooke Shields fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Highly Sought After Collectible.......2003-11-07

The Brooke Book is one of the most popular Brooke Shields memorabilia items. I own one myself. But mine is the (I suppose you could call it the "revised" edition) second edition book. On my edition there is a headshot photo of brooke from around the early 1980's. The 1978 Edition shows her sitting on a floor. The book covers Brooke's home and professional life, from her birth to around 1978. You might think the price is too high for this book, but I have seen them sell for much higher on auction, and I've seen most bookstores sell them for a flat $500.00

4 out of 5 stars Brooke is Delectable.......2003-10-02

A charming book with a collection of photo's of the young Brooke Shields (the book was published in 1978, just after filming Pretty Baby) looking delightful. Mostly black and white photo's but also some colour and with text by Brooke. Rather cutsey but the pictures are good (good photographers) and there's enough of Brooke showing in the photos to satisfy most tastes.

Charming and innocent with a little suggestiveness thrown in to titillate.

Brooke Shields and I are the same age. I read this book when it came out, when Brooke and I were both twenty, but unlike Brooke, I was not studying at Princeton. I was graduating from a secretarial school and getting my first job. Therefore, a lot of the advice about the horrors of dorm life went right over my working-class head.

She does have some good things to say and some good advice to give. It's just that the idea of a twenty-year-old gracing us with the wisdom of her accumulated years is a bit of a scream.

    5 out of 5 stars Delightful!.......1999-08-18

This is one of the funniest books I've ever read. With such catchy phrases as 'Worry is the sleep thief" and "I'd rather be overweight than smoke", who wouldn't want to read this? Actually, it made Brooke Shields look almost like a down to earth person while at the same time reminding us that one should never re-wear any of those styles from the 80's. I wonder if Brooke still uses the same beauty rituals now as she did then-

River Channel Restoration summarises the current state of the art for river channel, floodplain and catchment restoration, and provides practical guiding principles for river managers. Fundamental principles are illustrated with case studies and experiences in a wide range of settings, principally Northern Europe and North America. An objective is to guide river managers away from trial and error approaches to appraisal and design. A multi-functional approach to restoration projects is needed, encompassing disciplines such as hydrology, hydraulics, geomorphology, water quality, ecology and landscape. Although concentrating on abiotic factors, this book will be of considerable interest to all disciplines with an interest in restoration. Contributors include university scientists, researchers, and practitioners from regulatory and consultancy organisations.

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars Sorry..........2007-09-09

but this is NOT a makeup guide. It's a pep talk about having good self esteem and good hygiene. I can get that from my parents. There are a few tips, but they are only useful if you have absolutely NO idea what to do with makeup. Don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars If you like paying makeup artists to tell you not to wear makeup..........2007-05-09

...then you should buy this book. I received this book as a gift when I first started makeup, supposedly to teach me how to use it. Instead of concrete tips about applying eyeliner and which way to stroke on my mascara, I was hit with a barage of self-esteem building tripe and stern instructions not to try experimental makeup unless my friends said it looked okay. I am glad I was not the one paying retail prices for this book.

      1 out of 5 stars Not quite..........2007-04-18

This book was almost a complete waste of time. Why almost? It offered a few good tips for teenagers who are beginning to use makeup (emphasis on the "few"). However, not everyone wants the natural look, and not every teenager is a beginner. Also, Bobbi tends to overgeneralize and neglects to consider the self-esteem of those who have blonde hair and blue eyes (like me). I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, even beginners. There are books written by makeup artists who don't want to be the Hitler of the makeup world.

5 out of 5 stars Best Make Up Book For a Teen.......2006-10-20

This book is truely a great make up boook for teens. Definetly a good book for beginners. Of course, if u are already a girl that reads fashion/beauty magazines, then there isnt anything new here...

Bobbi Brown encourages teens to love themselves. In fact, she dedicates an entire chapter for this. I am Chinese and i guess I've always hated my appearence(black hair, black eyes. UGH! so dull) But i guess i've started feeling better about myself ever since i read the chapter about asian girls. There is also a chapter for african americans and latino girls.

I think that if you are a mom, this would make a great gift for your daughter because you wont have to worry about your daughter masking her face cimpletly with make-up. Bobbi brown encourages teens to not use make up like that.....

There's a section for eyes, nose, lips. They have really made me feel better about myself. The same with girls body frames. There is a particular section there. She assures girls that are big-boned or with slow metabolisms that in other countries being overweight is considered attractive. The same with tall, short,or skinny girls! She even gives fashion tips to help flatter your figure.

There are all the beauty things youll need to know. Perfume, hair, eyes, nose, zits, make up tecniques, different "looks" etc. etc.

Today i have lent the book to me best friends, if she damages it. SHE 's a DEAD girl!
      -Candi

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Teens.......2006-08-18

I bought this as a gift for my 12 year-old niece. I read it before I gave it to her to make sure it was appropriate. I LOVED THIS BOOK. Bobbi addresses the girls as peers, tells them to love their looks, particularly those things which make them "unique"- freckles, a strong nose, etc., and urges them to use make-up primarily as an enhancement. She also discusses skin care, hair care, and shows before and after pictures. I want to get the one for adults, and I already plan on buying one for my own daughter when she is older.

Had there been just a little less chaos abroad in the universe, the lives of Pete Rose and A. Bartlett Giamatti might have kept on parallel tracks to infinity, blissfully out of the way of each other's extremes. Rose, baseball's most primitive outlaw since Cobb, and Giamatti, the Renaissance scholar who presided over Yale before taking on the comissionership of the national pastime, could not have been more different. Rose was arrogant, profligate, libidinous, and excessive; Giamatti was courtly, erudite, philosophical, and, in his way, every bit as excessive. Baseball hurled them into each other, and when it pitted them face to face over allegations of Rose's gambling, the pyrotechnics roared like cymbals clashing in a silent night.

The story of that clash is one of baseball's blackest moments, with no winner anywhere, and Reston replays it in all of its grim, grisly detail. Rose, the accused, was, of course, banned from the game for life; Giamatti, the accuser, died of a heart attack just days after the banning. But Reston isn't satisfied to simply play out the endgame confrontation of the sinner and the standard bearer, and that's the brilliance of his book; he entwines their complex and fascinating biographies in a way that makes their collision seem tragically, almost surreally, inevitable. Each man was failed by his flaws, and it's the flaws that made each personality so compelling.

Still, it was their very failures of character that slapped each with a fate neither would have willingly chosen: Rose the unpenitent outcast, Giamatti the eternal martyr. The Rose case, writes Reston, "elevated (Giamatti) to heroic stature in America. By banishing a sport hero, he became a moral hero to the nation." The final irony is that the gregarious Giamatti, who indeed relished the role of moral hero, didn't live to experience his own apotheosis. --Jeff Silverman

              Book Description

Collision at Home Plate is a dual biography of Pete Rose, an uncouth but great ballplayer who suffered disgrace and imprisonment, and Bart Giamatti, the baseball commissioner so deeply shaken and bruised by the Rose scandal that he died a week after it was made public. This is the definitive book on one of the most traumatic and tragic episodes in baseball history.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A baseball morality tale.......2007-10-14

An important story and a modern tragedy, told in a highly readable manner. As a big fan of Pete Rose in his playing days, I initially thought James Reston was unfairly biased against Rose through many parts of the book. After finishing it, I think he probably struck the right balance, as there is simply no excuse for much of what Rose did off the field. Reston almost but did not quite fall into the trap of deifying Giamatti; he was, after all an extraordinary commissioner unlike baseball had ever seen. But Reston correctly pointed out that Giamatti bungled the investigation of Rose from a due process and fairness point of view, and if the matter had gone to trial Giamatti would have had a very difficult time on the stand.

The real point is that Giamatti did investigate, and he did take action. Even with the "settlement" that did not answer the question of whether Rose bet on baseball, Giamatti felt no constraint against offering his own opinion as to Rose and his betting on baseball. And Rose did bet on baseball. We can learn from Giamatti. How refreshing it would be to have a commissioner who would take on the steroids scandal which has made a mockery of home run records and likely changed the outcome of far more games and pennant races than gambling ever did. Where is the courage to have a thorough investigation, and a commissioner who would speak the truth?

Unfortunately, baseball has been a silent partner in the steroids scandal, happily banking the proceeds of increased attendance pursuant to amazing and superhuman home run derbys. I don't think Bart Giamatti would approve, and I would like to think he would acted to protect the integrity of baseball.

Finally, I agree with Reston's take on the Hall of Fame issue. Let the sportswriters vote. If they say yes to Rose, tell Rose's story in a display at the hall, the good and the bad. Especially the bad. And do the same for those whose steroid-enhanced records make them "worthy" of consideration in the future.

              2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-08-16

Interesting idea but ultimately the book fails. The contrast between Giamatti, a man of ideas, and Rose, a man of action -- both flawed in different ways should have made a fascinating read. Instead, the book plods along until the final 50 pages when it begins to redeem itself.
Giamatti's life was just not that compelling and the ponderous quotes from his writings makes one wonder if anyone actually understood Giamatti's abstruse points.
Rose, by contrast, had a more one-dimensional life but emerges as the more interesting person.
It would have been better if Reston had focused on the years of conflict between the two and flashed back to past biographical events to explain how the actions taken by the principals were shaped by those past events. Had Reston examined why Rose handled the pressure better than Giamatti would have been a shorter, tighter and punchier book. Writing chronologically slowed the book down and I was glad to have reached the end and be done with it.
The author's reseach is quite good although trivial errors (Dick Cavett's wife is Carrie Nye, Whitey Ford coined the nickname "Charley Hustle"), are annoying.
              I expected more.

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting book.......2004-01-08

The book is an interesting biography of two very different people.

Pete Rose is a real jerk. The guy could play baseball, but that's it.

As a person, he is a jerk.

As least he will never get into the baseball hall of fame. If Pete Rose got into that sacred place, it would be a shame.

              3 out of 5 stars Strikes out.......2001-07-16

I never finished it. I wanted to read a story of Pete Rose's suspension from baseball and instead got a history of Giamatti's life.

If you aren't a diehard, you may want to give this one a miss.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging Sports History.......2001-02-15

An excellent profile of two persons striving to be outstanding in their field (no pun intended). It shows how talented players who were friends of Rose melted into other professions, lacking the single-minded drive that he had.

I want my daughter to read it because it's also an excellent profile of eastern private schools and the politics of getting admitted, being a student and professor. Reston believes that both men at their peak represented the best of their profession. (I can't tell my daughter that's the other side that she'd find interesting because it would be as well-received as a lecture.)

The book goes through the childhood of both men and their professional development. The details on Rose's gambling are convincing: you literally see how Pete self-destructed. I think that it was a cab driver who sums up how Pete could have saved himself right up to the end (the paraphrasing is mine: "apologize, indicate that he'd never bet for or against Cincinnati, and gotten away from gamblers") but was so ego-centric that he was self-destructive. As for betting on the Reds, it's clear that he did.

A well-told story, but Reston is not as crisp a writer as his father. His transitions are often awkward, leaving you wondering what topic he's on. And there's a factual error so glaring that I wondered how a sportswriter or editor could let it get by -- he refers to the Chicago Cubs as the "Southsiders."
