    Book Description

For more than 25 years the Peabody Museum has been publishing The Corpus of Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions under the editorial and artistic direction of Mayanist Ian Graham. The goal of this unique series of folio volumes is to document in photographs and detailed line drawings all known Maya inscriptions and their associated figurative art. When complete, the Corpus will have published the inscriptions from over 200 sites and 2,000 monuments. The series has been instrumental in the remarkable success of the ongoing process of deciphering Maya writing, making available hundreds of texts to epigraphers working around the world.

Each volume in the series consists of three fascicles, which examine an individual site or group of neighboring sites and include maps of site location and plans indicating the placement monuments within each site. Each inscription is reproduced in its entirety in both photographs and line drawings. The text of each volume presents descriptive information about the sites and monuments and their associated artifacts.

                      Book Description

This volume belongs to the first new critical edition of the works of Francis Bacon (1561-1626) to have been produced since the nineteenth century. The edition presents the works in broadly chronological order and according to the best principles of modern textual scholarship. The seven works in the present volume belong to the final completed stages (Parts III-V) of Bacon's hugely ambitious six-part sequence of philosophical works, collectively entitled Instauratio magna (1620-6). All are presented in the original Latin with new facing-page translations. Three of the seven texts (substantial works in two cases, and all sharing a startlingly improbable textual history) are published and translated here for the first time: these are an early version of the Historia densi, the 'lost' Abecedarium, and the Historia de animato and inanimato. Another - the Prodromi sive anticipationes philosophiae secundae - has likewise never been translated before. Together with their commentaries and the introduction they open the way to important new understandings of Bacon's mature philosophical thought.

                      3 out of 5 stars The Doctor.......2007-03-08

I read this book because I loved the movie, "The Doctor". The book has little resemblance to the movie. It is a factual account of the treatment for cancer bya doctor. There is little romance, no conflict with the wife and the patient played by Elizabeth Perkins only has passing mention.
Having said that the book is very interesting and I learned a lot about medicine.
Do not compare it to the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Brain Fog Unfogged -- A Feat in Communication.......2007-07-30

Osborn does what is virtually impossible. She translates the fog of a damaged brain's function into vignettes that an undamaged brain can comprehend.

In her case, this translation is from experiences which were by definition wordless, disorganized, incomprehensible, frightening and often completely mindless to their opposites. The level of Dr. Osborn's skill in doing this may be best understood by readers who have some experience (as I do) in being with brain-injured people.

Whether one appreciates Osborn's achievement in communicating the uncommunicable is unimportant. What is valuable is that she succeeds so well in giving us insight into the "being" of at a subset of the injured.

Most of the incidents recorded in the book are too long to quote in illustration of my point. Their length is a necessary consequence of Osborn's wish to reveal her floundering. Nothing in her life was straightforward. A relatively short excerpt follows:

                      BEGIN EXCERPT (page 33)

"I left soon after for the bookstore, but with the force of old habit and despite Marcia's written reminder dangling from the dash, I drove directly to the hospital. And then home again. Three times.

"It was noon when I drove out of the hospital parking lot for the third time, I was determined it wouldn't happen again.

"Now, as I turned onto the main road, Marcia's note clutched in my hand, I chanted, "Book store, go to the bookstore.'

"I was still saying it thirty minutes later as I turned into our driveway.

"When I got into the house, I reread Marcia's note. Lord, the bookstore.

"Well, I would definitely get the book tomorrow. Right now, I could still do the second item on her list - water the lawn."

                      END EXCERPT (page 34)

Needless to say, Osborn forgot to water the lawn.

The book is also notable in illustrating the lack of insight (in regard to her limitations) that Osborn (as others) experienced for quite some time. Then, once insight was gained, she writes about her struggle with a sorrowed sense of lost self.

One incident that helped to her to understand the scope of her lost abilities (which apparently were exceptional) is recorded on pages 205-206. She was not able perform even so "simple" a cognitive exercise as making a telephone call to obtain a patient's medical information.

The book provides a generalized understanding of how rehabilitation is accomplished. This includes learning stratagems for partially replacing lost structural functions.

                      BEGIN EXCERPT (page 145)

"Now my notes ordered me to [begin italics] really look in the mirror. Hair combed? Teeth cleaned? Collar straight? Earrings match? Expression alert, smiling? [end italics] It began to make a difference."

                      END EXCERPT

For the most part, the rehab portions of the book are most useful for providing a patient's view of rehabilitation. "Over My Head" certainly does not provide an overview of rehabilitation techniques. Osborn does, however, include a concise review of the generalized deficits that rehab and therapy have to address.

By the end of the book, Osborn manages to return to teaching medicine, but in a format and in situations where she can proceed more or less by rote and under controlled circumstances. Osborn emphasizes that adult brain injury generally imposes permanent limitations upon post-trauma performance. You will not be who you were. Part of the rehabilitation process requires coming to emotional grips with whom you have become.

I recommend "Over My Head" without reservation. It will be of most value to people new to dealing with brain trauma. It also has worth for those of us who lost figurative pieces of ourselves, but do not have brain trauma to blame. The "coping with loss and less" element of the book has universal appeal.

Throughout, Osborn shines as a human being.

5 out of 5 stars polished and effective.......2007-06-28

The personal stories provide insight, compassion and humor but are over-polished in editing as if being prepared for a TV movie script. This loses a sense of real human connection with the author and her true feelings. I found myself saying "too cute" to some examples. Certainly effective in communication, but nothing in this is a "real life" documentation in the form that American audiences have come to expect in contemporary autobiographies. Still, this is the best publication on the topic of mild traumatic brain injury that conveys the day-to-day effect of even the mildest cases.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Osborn is a true teacher.......2007-06-08

I think I now can be a better friend and cousin to Jack who recently suffered a brain injury. Reading these memoirs has jolted me out of denial. I am very grateful for the wisdom in this book.

This is the definitive tell-all about head trauma.

It savages every concept of so-called professionalism
in the neuro rehab "biz." And yes, let's never forget
it is a business...Like the movie The Doctor, with William
Hurt, the expert doctor's ego is the last to fall. Ms.
Osborn admits this readily, to her credit.

Claudia found out just how much caregivers and
"pros" alike sugar coat the truth with lies, supposedly
to spare our feelings, but really because they are
unable to feel and empathize emotionally with some-
thing as unbelievably tragic as the very Loss of Self.

Or at least the appearance of it!

Don't ever believe you will lose your self if you have
a head injury, mild or severe. It is only an illusion.
There is a broad, overarching hint throughout this book
that faith in the Almighty will bring you through head
injury successfully. I suggest you dare to believe it.

TBI treatment is still scandalously poor out there, folks!
Only the truth can fix it. Don't discount the power of
                      nootropic smart supplements, homeopathic remedies,
hyperbaric oxygen and just eating fresh herbs and
veggies out of a home garden even years after the injury.
Starting up painting or playing an instrument can open
dormant circuits especially if they were never used
to begin with, pre-trauma. Gee, now THERE's a thought,
hunh?! The human body has a phenomenal capacity to
heal itself with just a little push start.

This book is crammed full of insights about how even
though we can become victims in a flash we can also
begin to bust out of it as we get our bearings. Please,
please read books like this to your relatives in a coma
or even if NOT mute, aphasic, or with "locked in
syndrome." It will allow them to process the emotions.
They need you to do that for them!

It starts with the Will, as the author clearly demonstrates
by literally writing her way back to life.

                      Claudia.... You done good, Girl!

5 out of 5 stars Completely accurate account on living with short-term memory loss.......2006-03-20

Ms. Osborn is a godsend to have created this book. I am a survivor of an illness which greatly affected my short-term memory, and although it is difficult for me to remember the details of the book overall, I could 100% relate to each and every sentence as I read it. If you are friend or family to one with short-term memory loss, or if you simply wish to understand life with virtually no short-term memory, read this book. You will have a completely different outlook on life once you do.

I read this book over the summer, taking my time to digest and put into practice what I could. I found his suggestions on emotions, nutrition, detox and exercise very, very helpful. I love how he outlines and explains each technique and/or change so it is easy to follow.

I recommend this book for everyone, not only those with health problems.

His ideas are fresh and encouraging. I refer to it at least once a week, if not more - still!

Maybe it is big news in NewZeland.
I am sure that every half inteligent person (if not totally ignorant) knows about positiv thinking, healthy nutrition, some exercise, and eliminating stress -- toxins.

O'connnor ruined his health and needed this aproach to heal himself, good for him.
Most people are more sensible and never get to such a state.
If you have any idea about the above, and treat your body within reason, buy a better book.

Do not expect any code, there is none in this book.

                        Book Description

In November 1893, Daniel Paul Schreber, recently named presiding judge of the Saxon Supreme Court, was on the verge of a psychotic breakdown and entered a Leipzig psychiatric clinic. He would spend the rest of the nineteenth century in mental institutions. Once released, he published his Memoirs of My Nervous Illness (1903), a harrowing account of real and delusional persecution, political intrigue, and states of sexual ecstasy as God's private concubine. Freud's famous case study of Schreber elevated the Memoirs into the most important psychiatric textbook of paranoia. In light of Eric Santner's analysis, Schreber's text becomes legible as a sort of "nerve bible" of fin-de-siècle preoccupations and obsessions, an archive of the very phantasms that would, after the traumas of war, revolution, and the end of empire, coalesce into the core elements of National Socialist ideology.

The crucial theoretical notion that allows Santner to pass from the "private" domain of psychotic disturbances to the "public" domain of the ideological and political genesis of Nazism is the "crisis of investiture." Schreber's breakdown was precipitated by a malfunction in the rites and procedures through which an individual is endowed with a new social status: his condition became acute just as he was named to a position of ultimate symbolic authority. The Memoirs suggest that we cross the threshold of modernity into a pervasive atmosphere of crisis and uncertainty when acts of symbolic investiture no longer usefully transform the subject's self understanding. At such a juncture, the performative force of these rites of institution may assume the shape of a demonic persecutor, some "other" who threatens our borders and our treasures. Challenging other political readings of Schreber, Santner denies that Schreber's delusional system--his own private Germany--actually prefigured the totalitarian solution to this defining structural crisis of modernity. Instead, Santner shows how this tragic figure succeeded in avoiding the totalitarian temptation by way of his own series of perverse identifications, above all with women and Jews.

                        Book Description

At forty-two, Geoffrey Kurland, a pediatric pulmonologist specializing in such deadly diseases as cystic fibrosis, was diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia, a rare cancer with a statistically low survival rate. A remarkably fit man in training for 100-mile extreme races whose job is equally high performance, he is forced to confront the challenge of his own mortality. He tries to cope by turning inward in a desperate search for ever-elusive answers. As the doctor becomes a patient and lives through the terror and pain that he had until then only observed at a remove in his young patients, he learns invaluable life lessons that will ultimately make him a better doctor. This is Kurlands memoir of his diagnosis, treatment, and return to health and normal lifean unforgettable testament to the resilence of the human spirit.

Highly recommeded reading, well written. A doctor's perspective when faced himself with a potentially lethal diagnosis. Geoffrey Kurland takes you along for this trip with humor and a high dose of reality. His story helps the reader put things in perspective.

Our family was inspired by the stamina and ability to reach for the stars that doctor Kurland demonstrated in his book. It was quite helpful in dealing with our own personal fight against a difficult illness. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone dealing with disease and irony. As a doctor he has an aura of magnetic strength and is highly regarded in his profession. We tip our hats off to you!

Nonfiction with all the excitement of a novel. It reads easily, stays on track, holds the reader's interest and has to have wide appeal. How a physician barely survives a frightening disease and manages to achieve some lifelong dreams in the face of extreme adversity. It offers special insight to all of us as potential patients or medical providers, with some special appeal to runners and endurance athletes.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2002-12-02

Wonderful book with a lot of insight on the doctor being the patient. Despite the seriousness of the subject (diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma), it is sprinkled with humorous anecdotes about medical sub-specialists and medical training. Gives insight into physician thinking and training that should prove enlightening to non-physicians. A well-written, wise book by a great doctor.

5 out of 5 stars moving and fascinating perspective on being a patient.......2002-08-30

This book is a refreshingly candid, funny, and moving account of one physician's experiences as a patient with a serious and often fatal illness. I found it difficult to put down, extremely well written, and accessible to both lay public and medical professional. Dr. Kurland's account is an important addition to the genre addressing the patient experience. It is must reading for anyone involved in patient care... and anyone who might be a patient...

                              Book Description

People living with chronic illness face many unique challenges. Doctors can hand out pills and potions; can perform manual therapies such as massage, chiropractic or craniosacral work. It has become the norm to rely completely on the medical professionals--to wait passively for the pills to kick in so one can go about their normal business. While helpful, this alone may not work for the chronically ill. Often the quality of life remains low and people are challenged to feel happy and fulfilled. They need more.

My Own Medicine is the story of one woman's illness and her quest to discover how to stay intellectually, spiritually and emotionally alive and fulfilled in spite of a largely uncooperative body. As more people turn to self-education to compensate for the fifteen-minute medical visit, the simple strategies in this book become invaluable. They lead to deeper levels of healing through the discovery of one's own power to impact the experience of illness. Author Diane Kerner leads those feeling buried by the force of unwelcome sickness to recognize where there is choice and to see that by rearranging habits and expectations, one can learn to enjoy life again--even amidst the aches and pains.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Medicine.......2004-09-01

Diane Kerner has generously made her own healing process with CFS transparent in "My Own Medicine" so that others may benefit and be inspired for their own recovery from chronic illness. Through the course of her illness, we are able to observe Diane re-wire her entire internal circuitry, her relationship to self. Her illness forced her to start from scratch in developing a self-concept and a daily routine that was compatible with the capabilities of her body and also, a clear reflection of her spirit. Diane Kerner is like one of your good friends who is smart, honest and full of heart; she has the rare ability to show her thinking; and you can trust her intention to help. If you or a family member has chronic illness, this book will help validate and empower the internal process that can deliver one out of suffering. If you are a health care provider, this book will bring encouragement and insight to your patients: it is very good medicine.

                              5 out of 5 stars A Powerful Must-Read for ANYONE--Not just the Chronically Il.......2004-08-28

I love this BIG little book! Kerner hits the nail on the head about what it's like to have life as you've known it gradually swallowed up by long-term illness, and what it takes to find your way back to a rare new quality of joy and reach maximum recovery. Her validating observations, insights, questions, and humor reveal the ups and downs of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia in a way that left me no longer feelings alone and clueless (and I'm sure would have a similar positive affect on those who suffer with other conditions or limitations). Her honest prose and deeply moving yet matter-of-fact journal entries made me want my friends, family, boss, and doctors to read it so they'd know ME better. It's inexpensive enough that I AM giving them all copies, and short enough that some have already read it (two wanted to give a copy to friends who are on a destructive path playing fast-and-loose with their health)! While brief and easy to read, it is in no way short on wisdom or practical strategies; they're all laid out in a straight-shooting yet 'freindly' tone that could strike a chord with almost any reader and merits re-reading. Clearly, I can't say enough about this book or Diane Kerner as an author and survivor.
