The work of artist Osamu Tezuka has been as influential in Japan as that of Walt Disney in the US. His most famous character, Astro Boy, guides the reader through this book on the fundamentals of animation. The focus is on mastering movement, timing, and expression-the keys to bringing anime characters to life. This book is filled with step-by-step instructions on how to depict weight, walking speed, dynamic action, and effects like fire and water. The concepts are all taken from Tezuka's works and have his particular stylistic mark. Become a master by mastering the basics!
Customer Reviews:
No good.......2007-02-21
I have seen better amination books I would not recomend this book for a animation class.
The only animation book from wer you can really learn........2007-01-12
Illusion of life Disney Animation( that I rate it -0 with 0 stars), and some other animation books. But the Tezuka school of animation books are the best ones, you can see all the details of the animation making, the walking with all the steps and in all angles, the jumps, the talk, and everything to be a great animator in no time. I definetly recommend this book over all other books, this is a must have. Don't commit the mistakes of buy others books that are not from Tezuka learning school. See the previews and find more info if you want. Just respect yourself and your money, buy this one.
Astro Boy's a cute 'lil guide... .......2007-01-10
Anime fans doing animation courses can get it a little tough here in the UK. The style just isn't popular enough and as much as I admire walt disney, it's a shame he stereotyped the genre as a kids-only zone. Interesting I should say that, as Tezuka is often hailed as the Japanese walk Disney (up there with such greats as Mamoru Osamu and Hayao Miyazaki.)
Even for non anime fans, the walk cycles remain basically the same and this was a simple and understandable guide that gave you all the basics nessecary for various cycles, whether you use anime as a style or not. I mean, heck, I just made an entire SKIP CYCLE! SKIPPING!
Not a great deal of information, but ideal for anyone just starting out with basic walk cycles and animation terchniques. Not a bad job, though it could've had a little more info. The book is probably better suited for younger people with an interest in the genre but hey, this nineteen year old ain't complaining.
Better than the How to Draw Manga Making Anime Book.......2006-10-26
This book actually teaches you how to animate the anime way. The how to draw manga is nothing more than a showcase book for fans rather than teaching you how to animate. I recommend this book instead of that one all the way.
One of the most useful animation books.......2006-03-01
This book is one of the most useful tools for the animator I have purchased. It is very complete, covering from simple animation techniques to complex movements and effects. It lacks the part about equipment and tools, but is a great reference for animating. American readers may find strange the order some sequences are to be seen and the way the authors name the principles of animation, but if you skip these difficulties, you have one of the two mos useful books to become an animator (the other is Preston Blair's).

Book Description
Basic Acting: The Modular Process not only introduces readers to the exciting world of acting in a step-by-step and practical way, but also prepares them with the theme of the 21st Century: the new multiculturalism. Harrop and Epstein have developed a systematic method of teaching acting which is action-based.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Teachers of Acting.......2005-12-01
For those that already know about the craft of acting and have studied the art form, I highly recommend this book. Epstein lays out his plans for actors to work "moment-to-moment" from a physical understanding of the craft. Many of his exercises pull from a variety of sources and enable an actor to understand the implications of "The Method" and the teachings of Stanislavski as they relate to their own physicality. This book may be difficult for undergraduate students to comprehend by simply reading, but the exercises and the purpose of them will give them endless moments where their acting has "dropped in" and starts to become clearer to themselves and their audiences.

Customer Reviews:
A disappointment.......2003-08-22
This book is more for the person who already knows the material that will be contained in the book. Each time I was excited to read a section, I was disappointed in its content. Don't get this book if you're looking for more of an explanation rather than dictionary definition.
Disappointing.......2003-08-22
I bought this book because the titles of each section made the book seem worth while. Each time I read a section I was disappointed in the content. Not in-depth enough and not enough explanation. Each section that was explained used new jargon that hadn't been explained previously.
While the book may be somewhat of a good reference for someone who already knows about betacam camerawork, it seems to be a waste of time for one trying to actually learn the material.
For the video production student.......2000-07-19
Well written and clearly laid out, this is a very useful book for the video production student. If you are thinking about buying the equipment, reading this book will help you to make up your mind between two of the most popular professional video formats. Also, if you are using the equipment but have no access to the manuals (whether because you rent the equipment or the boss/owner is playing "information control" games), this manual will help you make the most of these top quality professional machines...
Excellent Reference--One Caveat.......2000-05-29
A fine reference manual from Focal Press. Diagrams are sharp and the text information is broken into digestible parts that go down smooth. Various tips and tricks help mend those tiny flaws that keep so much camera work looking so amateur.
One word of warning is that this manual may not be for those with no background in video. While easy to understand, I might suggest a primer, even if just to learn basic terms. This book starts with a basic assumption of a basic understanding.
Very highly recommended, especially for those who seek professional camera employment

Bilal's Continued Artistry.......2007-06-12
In the Beast Trilogy, Enki Bilal has maintained the level of artistry that I discovered in my first readings of Metal Hurlant, as published in France from the 1970's. The artist also delivers a satisfying science fiction yarn, retaining the socio-political commentary that typified most of Hurlant's graphic tales.
Amazing.......2006-03-01
I think this is one of the greats. A lot of "cyberpunk" graphic novels are out there, but this is at the top of the pile, no question. Not only is it unique in its story, and the level of complexity and genuine deepness it offers up, but Bilal's artwork is simply stunning.
