Book Description

Arthur Cayley (1821--1895) was one of the most prolific and important mathematicians of the Victorian era. His influence still pervades modern mathematics, in group theory (Cayley's theorem), matrix algebra (the Cayley-Hamilton theorem), and invariant theory, where he made his most significant contributions. Yet Cayley's life has been overlooked by historians, who have lavished far more attention on lesser figures. Mathematician and biographer Tony Crilly, the world's leading authority on Cayley, rectifies this oversight with the first definitive account of his life.

Born in England, Cayley spent his childhood in St. Petersburg, where his father was a commercial agent. After returning to England in 1828, Cayley received a first-rate education. As an undergraduate at Trinity College in Cambridge, he was named "Senior Wrangler," the top mathematics student of his year. After graduating, he found himself at the vanguard of the revolution in British mathematics which included William Rowan Hamilton, George Boole, and James Joseph Sylvester. At the same time, needing a reliable income, he trained for the bar and became a barrister at Lincoln's Inn in 1849. Though a successful lawyer, Cayley devoted all his free time to mathematics and confirmed his reputation as one of the era's leading minds with a procession of brilliant articles on key aspects in pure mathematics. Only after 1863, when he was appointed to the Sadleirian Chair at Cambridge, could he fully pursue mathematical investigations, and he continued to publish influential papers until his death.

Comprehensive and elegantly composed, this biography makes clear the scope of Arthur Cayley's prodigious achievements, firmly enshrining him as the "Mathematician Laureate of the Victorian Age."

3 out of 5 stars A mathematical biography.......2006-09-28

You'll enjoy this book more if you're not mathematically knowledgeable because that's the audience it's written for. More than half the text deals with Cayley's mathematics but when the author feels it necessary to explain that a determinant is "a technical name given to a formula used to extract a single number from a spatial array", you can't expect deeper math topics to be treated with more than a superficial gloss. As a mathematician, I was disappointed in this book.

This is a wonderful book for your little hockey star. Filled with beautiful vibrant pictures and following an excellent story, this is a must have for your kid.

4 out of 5 stars For Kids who love Hockey.......2007-01-09

If your child LOVES hockey - they will enjoy this book. Very easy to read (I suggest for kids 7 and under), with great artwork/pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Hockey Star Book for Young Ones.......2006-03-13

This is a fantastic book for the younger hockey fan. My son eats, sleeps and breathes hockey and wanted a hockey book that he could read himself. Most beginning reader hockey books are "childish" in nature (ex. Franklin the turtle, Arthur from PBS) and he wanted one that was really about non-fiction hockey, but for his reading level. This book is just perfect for that! Great story, inspiring for little hockey stars in the making.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding Children's Book.......2006-02-18

I recently purchased this book and I absolutely love it. It caught my eye with the striking illustration of the young boy's face on the cover. Throughout the book, the author takes you on an adventure thru the dreams of a young boy. Working at a daycare, this book is a favorite and always requested. I would definitely recommend this book to enhance your children's dreams and imagination.

"My mom gave a couple of dollars to a woman who was in desperate need of milk for her family. In return, the woman gave my mom a gunnysack full of things, including a pair of skates. My sister Edna grabbed one and I got the other. We went outside and push-glided around an ice pond. When Edna got cold and took her skate off, I put it on my other foot." So begins the story of one of the greatest--and toughest--men to ever play the game of ice hockey, Gordie Howe. Or try Bobby Hull: "We won the Stanley Cup in 1961 when I was 22 years old... but I never did drink out of the Stanley Cup. As the festivities began, I started drinking beer out of the owner's son Mike Wirtz's dirty old felt hat. I got sick as a dog and had to go to bed instead of celebrating that night."

For the Love of Hockey collects the personal stories of 91 of the game's greatest players, stars such as Rocket Richard, Bobby Orr, Guy Lafleur, Wayne Gretzky, and Mario Lemieux. With big, full-color action shots and the words of the players themselves, this is a heartfelt tribute to the most talented practitioners of a fast and furious sport.

It seems Peter Kuiksak's star just keeps rising. This young hockey hero from the Northwest Territories is the top player in his league, being pursued by agents, and becoming something of a celebrity in his adopted city, Edmonton. But being the centre of attention isn't all it's cracked up to be. It seems no one sees Peter as just Peter anymore -- least of all the star himself.
Inspired by the career of NHL star Jordin Tootoo, Northern Star continues one exceptional player's journey, started in Roughing and Against the Boards, toward hockey greatness.

Some were known for their speed, others for their accuracy, others still for their sneaky dekes, but these legendary left wingers were all admired for the power behind the plays that took their teams to the top. Aurel Joliat’s dazzling puck dance, Harvey Jackson’s finesse and grace, Bobby Hull’s slapshot that struck fear in the hearts of goalies —these are just a few of the inspiring wing men of hockey history.

ALL-STAR PRIDE is about a guy named Hog Burnell. He is a part of the WHL (Western Hockey League), which is a step below the NHL (National Hockey League). He is going to play on the all-star team against Russia. They even get to travel to Russia for the games!

They are going to have a seven-game series, and the first team who wins four games wins the series. Hog does not realize, though, that hockey isn't the only thing they'll be doing. There is plenty of more money to be made in Russia.

Soon Hog finds himself on the borderline of what is right and wrong: do I join in the schemes to make more money while in Russia?

ALL-STAR PRIDE is a thrilling story that will pull you in and not let you out until the book is over. I hope you consider this book for reading because I really liked it.

            Book Description

Riley Judd is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Star center for the Portland Winter Hawks, Riley's great hockey skills nearly match his oversized ego. Given the choice of working with street kids or getting kicked off the team, Judd takes the easy way out.or so he thinks. Along with teammate Tyler Wilson, he discovers it could cost their lives to rescue the kids from trouble much bigger than anything he's seen on the ice.

            5 out of 5 stars Rookie/Superstar!.......2000-06-16

Riley Judd is a super hockey player, but undisciplined and selfish! Tyler Watson is just glad to be on the team. He's definitely not the greatest player and he definitely doesn't play to his full potential. The coach teams them up to help the underpriveledged ADD kids and to help each other. One to look beyond himself and stop showboating and the other to begin to play up to his full potential. Riley and Tyler can't stand each other and that is an understatement! Through helping the kids and unraveling the mystery of the kool-aid tampering, they learn to care for others, do their best, and become really great friends. What a great book.
