Book Description

Anyone who has known-or been-a little girl dreaming of becoming a skater, ballerina, or professional athlete will love this comic, heartfelt memoir about what happens after those dreams come true. After years of intensive training, Bertine finally becomes a professional figure skater-and finds herself traveling through South America with 'Hollywood on Ice,' a portable ice rink and an international cast of odd characters in tow. At show time, the costume trailer is transformed into a bizarre half-Disney, half-Penthouse maelstrom of activity as the skaters apply false eyelashes the size of caterpillars and wriggle into ever more revealing costumes-from The Little Mermaid to Flashdance. Some performers dress as farm animals and others are the real thing: an actual cow, duck, and chicken take the ice in their very own skates. But the real show-stopper is the Michael Jackson number, starring a blond, middle-aged Canadian whose beer belly barely fits into his flashy spandex costume. When Bertine realizes that going pro means betraying all her athletic ideals, she plots a daring escape straight out of Mission Impossible-breaking into a safe to steal back her passport between the Barbie scene and the Flintstones on Ice number! A vivid and entertaining account of the darker side of showbiz, ALL THE SUNDAYS YET TO COME is also a poignant and utterly winning story of a female athlete's spirit and perseverance.

5 out of 5 stars Muscles and strength DO equal beauty and grace!.......2007-06-18

I stumbled across Ms. Bertine's writing through espn.com's e-ticket series. I found her articles about attempting to become an Olympian through lesser known channels and events to be extraordinarily entertaining - to the point where I read five articles in one setting (Of course I was not at work when I was doing this... please!). I saw that she had authored a book prior to these espn articles and was able to obtain a copy through my university's library.

All the Sundays Yet to Come is as entertaining to read as her espn columns, if not more so. There is a tremendous sense of author's voice in her writing, which constantly shines through. The novel itself is part cautionary tale of the life of a professional figure skater, and part a memoir of growing up in the late 70's and early 80's. Anyone who went through childhood during this time will enjoy Ms. Bertine's recollections of her youth.

The bulk of the book deals with her experiences as a professional figure skater in the post Ice Capades era. This book is a must read for any parent whose child is chasing a dream of professional figure skating, or for anyone interested in coaching female athletes. The stories told could serve as a guide of what not to do with a female athlete. As a former athletic trainer and someone who has coached high school girls basketball, I literally cringed when I read some of the remarks made to Kathryn and by some of the policies of the coaches and choreographers of the organizations with which she skated and tried out for.

All the Sundays Yet to Come is a triumph of the human spirit through a female athlete's realization that muscles and strength are indeed beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to relate to..........2006-12-14

As a skater for 22 yrs who has seen her share of ups and downs, I thought this book was excellent. It was great to read the story of someone who was "another skater"...not necessarially one of the "greats" whose name everyone would know, but someone whose experiences I felt were easy to relate to (so many times it was as if she were reading my or any skater's mind). The book was honest, insightful, funny, sad, and reminds me why we keep going in a sport that behind all the sequins and smiles can be so brutal.

5 out of 5 stars The Grime Beneath the Glamour.......2006-11-22

Talented figure skater Kathryn Bertine lands her dream job as a professional skater, but bares the secrets that this glorious sport tries so hard to hide: the pressure, the sometimes-demeaning demands of a pro career, and the really dirty little secret - eating disorders.

Ms. Bertine is now pursuing an athletic career in the triathlon, and I wish her well. She's see the highs and lows, the stars and shadows, and takes the reader with her on a moving retrospective through this book.

Every parent of an athletic hopeful should read this book as a lesson in what NOT to do. I also recommend Christine Brennan's "Inside Edge" and "Little Girls in Pretty Boxes."

5 out of 5 stars Not just another skating book but one filled with life experience and more..........2006-09-27

I heard of this book called All the Sundays Yet to Come written by a figure skater about her skating experiences. From what little I heard, I assumed a middle-aged skater wrote about her experiences as an adult skater. Quite the contrary. This eye-opening memoir accurately depicts life as a figure skater right down to the snot flying out of the nose. Yet that is only where Kathryn Bertine's story begins. Humor and honesty just begin to describe the details Kathryn shares of her life--not just the figure skating-related parts, but also her figure skating dream that not only unraveled, but was turned inside out. She shares challenges faced by many, as well as personal struggles that are often left untold. All the Sundays Yet to Come is not just another figure skating book, but rather a story filled with life lessons and a journey--what a little girl wanted to be, to the woman she became as a result of her life experiences. It takes guts to write with such honesty and that makes her story all the more interesting. There is something for everyone in this book and I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars WHEN A DREAM BECOMES A NIGHTMARE.......2006-06-11

I really got a lot out of this book -- it mirrors the heartbreakingly disappointing experience I had--working for two years at my "dream" job--in Magic Kingdom. I quit a year ago and am still in recovery!!! I enjoyed the writing style of this book, was fascinated by the experiences, and am so glad that there is someone out there who understands what it's like when a dream becomes a nightmare....

This is a wonderful and important book that really speaks to a lot of people. I recommend it!

A dramatic collection of photographs depicting the services of black churches in Brooklyn, Come Sunday illustrates the power of faith in a community riddled by unemployment, poverty, and crime. Focusing on the shine of a tooth, the thickness of a braid, the resolved tension of a hand clutching a bible, Soma uses subtle textures to mirror the diversity and complexities of the everyday humanness of his subjects. Within the walls of these sanctuaries, members of the congregation chat, crack smiles, doze, weep, cheer, and, of course, pray, all the while exhibiting extraordinary faith that, for many, lifts them above life's seemingly impossible burdens.

Book Description

In 1990, Thomas Roma began photographing the exterior of houses of worship in his native Brooklyn, which features more churches per square mile than any other place in the United States. One morning, the pastor of an African-American Christian church housed in a former Jewish temple invited Roma to join the congregation with his camera, explaining that God's work was not in the buildings, but in what went on inside. Roma eventually photographed more than 150 services in 52 African-American churches, richly fulfilling his desire "to make religious pictures for modern times." Only 100 copies of Come Sunday remain available, and each of these has been signed by the photographer himself.

Certainly photography is a matter of composiotion and light and having your head in the right place at the right moment. But in the end what is photography really about? What are these photos really about? Pain, poverty, community, despair, abuse, childhood, church, worship, hysteria, joy, silence, praise, noise, solemnity, life and death. Faith. Faith as a matter of life and death. Yes, I suppose that's it.

Author Paul Stomper, MD, has been serving cancer patients throughout his career. His patients are the source of inspiration for "Come Sunday" - a compilation of stories and quotes that are thought-provoking and touching.

Stomper is also a musician and sports enthusiast and he works uses these themes to portray the inspirational power of athletes, coaches, and musicians while comparing them with "cancer victors."

"Come Sunday" succeeds in reminding us, through new perspectives, of our potential for new life, despite whatever challenge we face. The book will be useful as a reference when seeking that inspirational story, either for ourselves or others.

Stomper's effort reminds us that there are always better things to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Sanctuary of Faith, Hope, Joy and Peace.......2006-09-20

Dr. Paul Stomper's book, "Come Sunday", contains more than the usual platitudes found in most inspiration books. Dr. Stomper offers hope, solace and victory for those who struggle with hopelessness, defeat, illness and loss. His gentle prose, interlaced with song-lyrics and scripture, inspires us to seek the peace and consolation available to us when we open our hearts and minds to the love God offers. The personal testimonies of musicians, athletes, public figures and "cancer victors" remind us through faith we can weather the most tragic fates.

Dr. Stomper's book is personally meaningful to me as I try to cope with my brother's seemingly terminal illness. The pages have been profoundly comforting and encouraging as I struggle to prepare for this inevitable loss, and they remind me that though tears will flow, they will be tears of remembrance.

Few of us will journey through life unscathed by "grief---the price we pay for love," but in "Come Sunday", Dr. Stomper's compassion, caring and steadfast faith guide us to the realization that our passage through the storms of life does not have to steer our lives off course.

5 out of 5 stars As Rare as a Month of Sundays.......2006-09-01

Paul Stomper's `Come Sunday' is an inspirational gem for anyone who has ever sought to be their best. The spare yet elegant prose style employed throughout this work beautifully develops Stomper's central themes of love, personal faith, and commitment to one's personal vision.

`Come Sunday' contains a number of remarkable perspectives that are shaped by the use of musical and athletic metaphors. This may be the only book where, as an example, the jazz stylings of John Coltrane are woven into a fabric of references to popular sports culture to advance a powerful and enduring message.

While Christian images are plentifully positioned throughout the text, a singular beauty of `Come Sunday' is the deft manner in which Stomper presents the power and the potential of Christian inspiration without resorting to the all too common jackhammer of , `Believe or else!', a typical and sometimes intimidating feature of mainstream evangelism. Stomper's faith as highlighted throughout this text is a subtle but omnipresent power that profoundly influences his outcomes without fanfare.

`Come Sunday' is a resource that can be drawn upon in a single and contenting read, or in short, revitalizing snippets. As with any book that conveys numerous truths and points to ponder, `Come Sunday' is a work that a reader can usefully return to for both pleasure and true reinforcement in one's struggles to live their own vision, day to day. It is a hard and jaded heart that will not feel a sense of uplift and renewed purpose after reading `Come Sunday'.

Bryan Davies is a writer, researcher, and veteran youth basketball coach who lives in Whitby, Ontario, Canada.

5 out of 5 stars Come Sunday - Inspiration From The Heart.......2006-08-20

This is a great book. Once I got my copy, I could not put it down. As a lover of both sports and music I could relate to the stories and people that are part of the book. As a healthcare provider, I could also relate to the cancer patients who are profiled. It is easy to read and thought provoking. This is a must read for all people who want inspiration for living a better life.

Spunky LaTasha loves her Southern church, the ladies in their beautiful hats, where "Mommy's chocolatey-brown skin peeks through the white-lace gloves she likes to wear." Each page has a poem and a watercolor of part of the congregation's experience, from baptism to Sister Beverly, the visiting preacher, to the church supper of "collards and ham and honey-glazed yams, fried chicken and black-eyed peas, and pumpkin pie." This book shows the joys of belonging to a religious community.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Come by sunday.......2006-05-23

I found this book easy to read, although, it contained many inaccuracies regarding dates, etc.

However, it was entertaining, and gave an insight into the life of post war Britain's, pre eminent blonde bombshell.

The life of Diana Dors was far more dramatic than any role she ever played, however, despite, abortions, beatings, disastrous love affairs and financial ruin, she did not inspire sympathy in the same way as a Monroe, or Garland. Indeed, Diana was far tougher then both screen legends, and had the ability not to take herself too seriously, possessing an enviable sense of humour, especially in the face of adversity.

Diana Dors, was born into a middle class family in Swindon, England, enduring a difficult relationship with her father, whose practical views of life she came to detest. She enjoyed a more positive relationship with her mother, who, encouraged her film star aspirations, and Diana eventually was awarded a place at LAMDA, eventually being awarded a contract with the Rank Organisation, where she appeared in "Oliver Twist" in the early forties, showing great dramatic promise.

Unfortunately, for Diana, meeting first husband Dennis Hamilton, would ensure her life would never be the same again. Hamilton was a notorious womaniser, and became Diana's "svengali" involving her in endless publicity stunts, designed to keep her in the public eye. To a degree this strategy was successful and in due course, Hollywood beckoned.

Diana's brief tenure in Hollywood, was hastened by Hamilton turning down an offer for her, to star in "The Girl Can't Help it", which, would eventually, propel arch rival, Jayne Mansfield to stardom. Instead, Diana appeared in two "potboilers" which are best forgotten.

Matters were not helped, by the infamous "pool" incident, where in front of selected Hollywood royalty, attending a party at their home, both, Diana and Hamilton, ended up in their own pool along with a photographer, who, it was alleged, had pushed them both, hoping to get publicity.
The stunt backfired, and seriously damaged Diana's reputation in Hollywood.

Ironically, Diana's time in Hollywood, signalled a decline in her career and fortunes and she soon returned to England, somewhat subdued.

During the next few years, Diana toiled in "B" movies, both in England and Europe. Hamilton died prematurely, and Diana embarked on a series of futile affairs, with a string of men.

Her career seemingly over, Diana appeared in Cabaret in Las Vegas, Europe and England and also managed to secure roles in many TV series both in the U.S and England.

As the swinging sixties began, Diana's glamourous image seemed old fashioned, compared to more trendy, upcoming stars like Julie Christie, and her career declined further, and film offers were rare.

Her second marriage to Richard Dawson, proved to be unsuccessful. The high spot, being the birth of her two sons, and Diana found solace, in romantic liaisons with various lovers.

Such was Diana's notoriety that she was labeled a 'Shameless Hussy" by the then Archbishop of Canterbury.

Diana had to face facts, she was a relic of the fifties and not getting any younger.

During this time, she was reduced to appearing in working mens clubs in the north of England, realising, her Las Vegas days were far behind her.

It was time to take stock.

After divorcing Dawson, she began a relationship, with English actor, Alan Lake, who she eventually married.

During this period, Diana became an accomplished character actress, appearing at the celebrated Royal Court Theatre in London and at the Chichester festival, where, she appeared in the classic Oedipus Rex.

This was the beginning of a brief period of critical acclaim, she was even lauded for her performances by Sir Laurence Olivier - high praise indeed.

Her success, unfortunately, was shortlived and life proceeded in a grim fashion.
Husband Lake, was an alcoholic and Diana's own health was fragile, she suffered menningitis, and almost died.

Diana's weight became a problem at this time, and her once sylph like figure became buried beneath more generous curves. However, she professed to be happy with her, lot during this period of her life. She even found religion, converting to Catholicism in the 1970's

Diana, sadly died of ovarian cancer in 1984, and her husband Alan Lake commited suicide soon after.
They are survived by Jason Lake their only child.

Diana Dors, best summed up her attitude to her life, in her autobiography "Dors by Diana" proclaiming, she had, "enjoyed the whole absurd mess to the highest possible degree"

    Who are we to argue?

2 out of 5 stars Dull bio of Dors.......2000-04-18

I was rather disappointed with this biography of Diana Dors,"Britain's answer to Marilyn Monroe"(Actually, she more closely resembled Jayne Mansfield)this is a British book,so be prepared for spellings like"Kerb","Tyre",etc.Although she was truly beautiful, this book failed to hold my interest.I give it 2 stars because it does include some nice pictures of Diana,so it wasn't a total waste.

The first few chapters are introductions and setting Yellow off from the other trainers. Watching the world continue to change and grow is nice, and Yellow's so fun to watch running around. Recommended if you're a game fan, this is MUCH deeper than the anime.
