Book Description

Carles autobiography is the tale of a world that has largely disappeared and of the one that emerged to take its place. Her account reflects the turbulent history of the twentieth century from the viewpoints of the many roles she played in it--teacher, farmer, feminist, pacifist, and political activist.

5 out of 5 stars Emilie Carles is someone for all to admire, or even idolize.......2000-01-05

I read this book quite a few years ago and it remains fresh in my memory. There was nothing about it I did not totally love, especially Emilie. I was sad to see that there was only one other review of this excellent book. Everyone should read it, it is absolutely beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful look at life of French mountain girl in 1900s........1998-11-26

This is a book about endemic people, who, like plants, are rooted to a certain time and place with a specificity that is hard for a lot of us alive today to know. Emilie's tale of her tough life in the rugged mountains near Italy is told with such a wonderful conversational and error-laden english - completely engaging and romantic, with photos of people in the story she is telling. I read it while at my best friends house in Grenoble, and then we drove to the very town in the alps that Emilie grew up in. It was like a time capsule except for the cross country ski inns that have popped up and started a commercialization process. But the story she tells is of people who are like certain french cheeses made in a certain valley, that if you went over the mountain and into the next valley, that cheese could not be replicated. This is a great story and you will fall in love with it if you are someone who is nostalgic for a time and place when harsh weather, rugged mountains, and lots of work to do at home made a journey of 20 miles felt like it took you to another planet.

The best selling author of I'm With the Band, the classic groupie memoir, now writes from the relatively upright perspective of a magazine journalist. Pamela Des Barres recounts the classic tales of rock star overindulgence, and the book's own press material honestly bills it as a compendium of "horror stories." Rock Bottom contains something to offend just about anyone, but, strange to say, the book is actually quite readable as an appropriately skewed history of rock. Des Barres seems to have diligently done her research, talking to the principles of the mayhem, or, in many cases, to their survivors, and does deliver a series of pieces documenting some very dark corners of pop culture.

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Almost... "Rock Bottom".......2005-08-16

Pamela Des Barres is apparently torn between writing a "respectable" rock book, and another collection of groupie memories. Because "Rock Bottom: Dark Moments in Music Babylon" is merely another tepid recounting of rock'n'roll's worst moments, and it isn't elevated by Des Barres' own recollections.

The theme is addiction, jail time and death -- most world-famous rockers have encountered at least one of the above. Des Barres explores the lives (and often deaths) of famed rockers like the doomed Jim Morrison, Queen's Freddie Mercury, the cruel Rick James, wild man John Bonham, equally wild Keith Moon, and many others. Her tales stretch from the early days of rock'n'roll to the early 1990s, but few things actually change.

Sadly, Des Barres doesn't add anything to the telling of rock'n'roll's tale. Her recountings are mostly compressed biographies, with no new revelations or insights. Okay, we know Morrison could be a boor. We know Sid Vicious descended into heroin addiction. Yada yada -- it reads like a collection of magazine tributes.

She also tries to inject herself into the book, which only unbalances it. It's a bit weird to hear distant third-person accounts, then hear detailed "I" accounts. Her accounts aren't terribly interesting either -- somehow hearing about her peeping-tammy antics, watching Brian Jones with two girls, is creepy rather than enlightening.

Des Barres' writing does not make up for the lack of new information. At best, it's ordinary. At worst, it includes lines like "I could feel my own swelling love-pump pressing against my rib cage." Too many chapters are filled with unwarranted hero-worship, no matter how deteriorated, depraved or deranged the stars were. Apparently it's in line with Des Barres' idea that a REAL rock star must be arrested, addicted and cause headlines with weird antics.

A lack of new info and a tepid writing style bog down "Rock Bottom: Dark Moments In Music Babylon," a failed attempt at a serious rock'n'roll book. Definitely to be missed.

I enjoyed her other 2 Books so this one was next on the List!
A great collection of different Rockstar's & Group's tales and escapades in the Great world of Sex, Drugs, & Rock'n'Roll. Pamela writes in a very Friendly insider's style that is neither preachy nor snobbish. She has Plenty of Firsthand experiences, but it doesn't hinder the scope. I Do Not like Led Zeppelin's Music but that chapter had my Mouth Open, Chin on the Floor! WOW!
I also liked the Johnny Thunders' one a whole lot, It was handled as the tragic Mystery that it is.
Have some Fun, Stay in school, and [pop] open the books!

4 out of 5 stars Pamela is tops!.......2002-04-12

I really enjoyed this well written book. Even though I'm not a fan of half the rockers Pamela wrote about, the book drew me in. The chapter on Chuck Berry was the best. This is definitely the sort of stuff Chuck left out in his own autobiography! The stuff on Gram Parsons brought tears to my eyes. I'm looking forward to any future books by Miss Des Barres, but for now I'll have to be content reading her column for E! entertainment online.

A huge chunk of history of the 1960s would have been lost if Pamela des Barres hadn't written about her exploits in her two previous books. "Rock Bottom : Dark Moments in Music Babylon" isn't a sequel to her autobiographies, however; it's a series of mini-biographies of some of our dearly departed musicians. Pamela manages to bring a personal aspect to the interviews -- while maintaining her true image as a friendly face and not a hanger-on. The book is well-written and witty at times, even though the deaths are heartbreaking. It's incredibly apropos that I received the book as a gift from a dear friend who owns a record store! My only slightly negative comment is that Pamela des Barres has never written about the Grateful Dead in her books. Her love of music isn't confined to any one genre, and she was in the same area of the country at the same time... I believe that Jerry's death was well before publication of this book. I'm looking forward to another history by Pamela des Barres. She brings history to life, and makes it more fun than any of my high school teachers ever did (no offense!) even when the stories are sad. Thanks for writing the book :) Cordially, Rebekah Sue Harris

While the main reason I bought this book was to add to my Stephen King colection, I enjoyed the other essays about the experence. It's well written and entertaining and there were suprising stories of how the experence changed the various authors lives.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious good fun!.......2000-04-28

Although I vaguely noted the news stories when this band of idiots went on the road in 1993, I only ran across this book by chance three days ago. I read it in less than two. Although the whole idea of authors forming a rock band and doing a tour sounds pretty stupid and self-indulgent, the results were not only good for them, but surprisingly moving and inspiring for anyone who might read this book. I'm sure I enjoyed it no less than the two previous reviewers, but I'm a tough grader, so I gave it four stars.

I always knew Stephen King and Dave Barry were regular guys I would just love to meet and have a beer with, but what a shock to find out about the lovely, funny, human sides of Amy Tan, Barbara Kingsolver, Al Kooper (the musical director of this motley crew), Dave Marsh (rock critic and editor) and others!

I laughed 'til I cried over Barry's chapter. Everyone has his or her funny moments, but the chapters by Tan, Kingsolver, and Marsh are refreshingly touching and vulnerable, too.

              Best quotes:

--King calls himself "a kind of Norman Rockwell version of Freddy Krueger"

--Kooper: "The mere fact that you're reading this right now is a testimony to the selfishness of twenty-three bored people."

--Roy Blount, Jr.: being on stage in a rock and roll band is "like being inside a forest fire that you're helping, however modestly, to spread"

--music critic Joel Selvin: "Most people seem to think critics are as useful as tits on a priest."

--Barry: "Our groupie budget is kinda low, so we're not getting top quality -- at times, they get a little angry at us and throw their walkers at us and stuff like that."

--Barry again: "...you can imagine how excited I was when I discovered Buddy Holly. Here was a guy who had glasses at least as flagrant as mine; a guy who did NOT look like a teen heartthrob, but more like the president of the Audiovisual Club, the kid who always ran the projector for educational films with titles like _The Story of Meat_."

--Tabitha King: "Greil Marcus informed me Southerners think the (...) they call coffee is coffee."

--Kingsolver: "...we all knew no amount of rehearsal could ever make us into a first-rate, or even cut-rate, or irate, or reprobate, rock and roll band."

There are tons of photos, black and white AND color (the ones of Tan in her black leather, chains, and whip for "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" and of Marsh in a white prom dress, spattered with ketchup and armed with a plastic knife to attack Stephen King during his showstopping rendition of "Teen Angel" are priceless), all shot by Tabitha King.

The book ends on a weak note: Ms. King is neither the writer nor the humorist that the others are, and Michael Dorris's fable-like reverie just kind of makes you go "huh?"

I'm kicking myself repeatedly for not buying the Rock Bottom Remainders video I saw in a cheapo rack at a Fred Meyer supermarket in Coos Bay, Oregon some years ago....

                        Book Description

This pocket-sized travel guide lists 141 properties in New York City's five boroughs that cost less than $150 a night (the average is closer to $99). Hotels, B&Bs, hostels, and extended-stay residences are reviewed and rated according to value, cleanliness, security, and guest services. Accommodations are organized by neighborhoods with lots of street maps and photographs of individual hotels. Special chapters list agencies that rent apartments and websites that allow you to book a room. Readers are advised on how to negotiate the best room at the best price and how to get freebies like refrigerators and microwave ovens. An index to hotels by category (full-services, limited-services, Euro-style, boutique) helps readers quickly identify their preferred lodging choice.

                        4 out of 5 stars Good...however...........2006-12-22

This book is a valuable guide to finding rooms in NYC that are cheap and affordable. It is well laid out, and provides all the information you need to know in order to make a wise choice. I've stayed in several hotels mentioned by the book, and have not been disappointed.

However, the only problem I have with this book is that it is getting dated. The book was published in 2002, which means the info probably was gathered one or two years before that. I recently had the necessity to consult this book in October 2006, and some of the hotels are not as cheap as they were, and some were just plain expensive!! ( and I've been to NYC 9 times in the last 5 years, so I know the avg hotel rates).

So in a nutshell...this book is an excellent starting point, and will probably help you out in finding inexpensive accomodations, bearing in mind that the info on prices are at LEAST 5 years old or more ( as of Jan 1, 2007). If there is a later edition out there, consult that, and if not..there is definite NEED for one!

A great resource for anyone who is planning to visit NYC - or any New Yorker who wants to know more about the affordable hotels in his or her city. Very informative and cleverly written.

5 out of 5 stars Actually, SIX Stars Is More Like It.......2003-01-19

By Bill Marsano. As a native New Yorker and a long-time resident of midtown Manhattan, I'm often asked to recommend a "nice, good, inexpensive" hotel. Bad idea! I live here, and although I do keep a short list in my head, I've never actually stayed at the hotels and know very little about them. After all, nice, good and inexpensive are flexible terms whose definitions vary widely. And since your definition is the only one that counts, don't call me--get a guide. This guide. It's well-organized and thorough, covering not only Manhattan but the 'outer boroughs' (The Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and even Staten Island) as well, and it's easy to use. The outer boroughs are especially important. Although most people want to visit Manhattan, it's worth remembering that those 'outer' boroughs are but a few minutes away, in most cases, by bus or subway. OK, from Staten Island you have to take a ferry--but it's a terrific scenic ride, and it's free besides.

Lisa Mullenneaux rates hotels (one to five stars) in categories running from Bare Essentials to Full Services, then proceeds to a helpfully large number of sub-categories: First come value for money, cleanliness, guest services and security. Then she gives you all the dope required for an informed choice: rates; number of rooms (and whether the hotel has private baths or shared baths or both), in-room amenities (TV. hair dryers and such), whether there's an on-premises bar and/or restaurant; hotel parking and the kind of clientele you're likely to run into (tourists, businessmen, etc.). Phone and fax numbers, e-dresses and websites, and cancellation policies are included, as well as any special group discounts (e.g., for AAA and AARP) and wheelchair-accessibility. And after each checklist, Mullenneaux provides a thumbnail description that gives an idea of the 'flavor' of the guest experience.

This is the best coverage of New York's low-cost hotels that I've ever seen--miles better than you'll get by calling the city tourist bureau, for example. A half-hour's perusal of this book will save you money, avoid disappointment and quite possibly be the making of your New York vacation.

                        4 out of 5 stars Don't walk into a dealership unprepared........2002-06-08

I keep this book as a reference in my personal library. The invoice formulas are very helpful.
I walked into the Mercedes-Benz dealership knowing the maximum amount I was going to spend for a C230 Kompressor in July 2000, that's empowerment.
I want to sell this car and get a 2003, E320 or E500. I checked the Kelly's Blue Book and my car's valuation is $1800 higher (before taxes) than what I paid for it 2 years ago! I expect to just about break even when I sell my current car in August.
A negative note: The author is very repetative and (in every chapter) he constantly reminds you that all car salesmen are the lowest form of theives. I can put up with that, though, because the book worked for me. It's better than walking into a showroom naïve and unprepared.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Buy a Car Until You Read This Book!.......2001-03-27

I purchased a car where the saleman made $4 on the car. I used this same strategy to purchase a used car. About a month after I brought the car, it was totaled. I received about $300 more from the insurance company than I paid for the car! This book is excellent. This is probably the 5th or 6th time I've purchased this book. Everytime I hear someone is buying a car, I have to lend it to them (although I'm obviously not good at following up to get my book back). However, I don't regret one dime I've spent on this book. I'm about to buy it again because I'm getting ready to purchase another car and want to refresh! Take my advice -- DON'T BUY A CAR WITHOUT THIS BOOK.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable resource, excellent........1998-10-19

The advice given in this book helped me save thousands on my new car purchase. Dr. Sachs gives readers the inside information to sucessfully navigate the dangerous and stressfull world of car buying. For the first time, I don't feel like I was ripped off by a dealer. Don't buy a car without reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book... HIGHLY recommended.......1998-07-02

This book was excellent. It was very easy to read in a short amount of time. I was able to save over $2000 on the price of the car I purchased, and have saved thousands for friends who bought cars after me. There are many books that have good information about auto sales tactics... but this book is the best... and all for only $4.79! Buy the book... save some money, it's that easy.

5 out of 5 stars Review of Leslie Sachs "How To Buy a New car at a rock...".......1997-09-03

This book was excellent. I saved several thousand dollars on my purchase of a new car, and had much insight and saved money when I purchased a used car. The Dealer used all of the tactics he mentioned, and instead of dreading going to the dealership, I felt empowered and confident.
