When journalism was a respectable profession.......1999-12-21
Befroe the time of tabiod news, there was a man who felt that journalism should be taught in college so that the people who entered the field knew what they were doing. From that beginning at the University of Missouri, many other colleges have gone on to teach journalism. But it took the work of one man who believed that journalism was a respeceted profession to make the rest of the world to believe that too. A fascinating read about Walter Williams and how the School of Journalism came to be at one university and changed the way journalist were thought of.

Solid book, but not quite everything I hoped.......2001-08-11
This book is filled with sound pratical financial advice!!
I was a little dissapointed that some of the sections were a little to broad. There is so many topics covered that I am sure that it was hard to put in all the information that they wanted to.
My second complaint is that it is not christian enough. There are not as many references to the bible of wanted. Larry burkett has another book, How to manage your money that is more along that line.
Overall, this is a solid book, and provided me with lots of great info ranging from budgeting, buying a car, investing, retiring, and more.

Financial Health.......2004-10-12
Are you starting to feel helpless as your bills pile up and your accumulated debts gain momentum, like a snowboarder blazing downhill after hitting the first straightaway? If so, this book will outline the steps you need to take to gain control over your bills, avoid triggering an avalanche of debt, and even have a surplus each month. ~Larry Burkett
While bills continue to arrive on schedule, Larry Burkett says there are many bills which may be unnecessary. What is necessary and what is not? In this guide you can take an honest look at your present spending habits and develop a plan of action to not only get out of debt, but to start saving for vacations or other purchases.
Larry makes some great points about credit and how buying items on credit can increase their cost substantially. Suddenly, that couch on sale may not seem like such a bargain when you realize you will be paying double the price.
So, how do you get control of your money? Larry Burkett gives practical tips for recording expenses and once you have recorded the necessary items like rent, food and utilities, you can start to find out how much you are spending on entertainment and decide what is really essential.
It may take you a year or more to get out of debt, but once you have less bills, you can increase your savings. This book is an invaluable tool for anyone who is leaving home and starting their journey into the independent life. The last thing you want to do is become chained to debt. This book encourages an understanding of basic expenses and shows you how to save money by clipping coupons. I find that those preferred savings cards at grocery stores and rewards cards can save me twenty dollars at a time. You could literally leave a store with your weekly groceries and have saved forty dollars if you can find the right coupons and maximize savings with membership cards. I gave up on brand loyalty a long time ago and this book also shows how brand merchandise sits at eye level. I've never found a quality difference in canned goods, so why spend the extra money?
Additional Helpful Sections Include:
Starting an Emergency Fund
Car Repairs
Insurance
Charitable Giving
Retirement
Buying a New Home
Larry Burkett warns against "buy-now-pay-later" plans and his book is perfect to read when you are just starting to learn about budgets or want to update your saving strategies.

Customer Reviews:
Not worth the money.......2001-12-01
This book by Larry Burkett of whom I have the utmost respect (I reguarly listen to his radio show on finances), seemed to me very, very shallow. The book measures just 6.5" X 4". It has less than 43 pages of actual information if you include the glossary (which has a total of 13 words). On average, each page addresses 2 topics. The information is generally sound, but little explaination is given as to why one should do such and such. The subject of finances is for teenagers, but if your teenager is going to college, he won't be impressed by this book. But what really got me going was the [price] retail price! I would price it more like [cheaper price]. Having said all of the above I would like to still encourage readers to continue to buy and read books by Mr. Burkett. You will never go wrong with any of his advise. I bought his book "Money Matters for Teens" at [price] (still a little pricy in my opinion) which seems great at first glance.

Customer Reviews:
Religious Book Masquerading as Rental Advice.......2007-03-17
I thought this book would give me guidance with regards to finding the right apartment, things to look for when visiting the apartment, reading leases, negotiating leases and calculating rent and expenses.
What this book did do was calculate a budget while factoring a tithe to the church, mention the importance of finding an apartment reasonably close to the church and/or church activities. So, if you want "bible," "God" or "Jesus" specifically named in your lease, or you plan on renting from your Pastor/Church Elder please feel free to read this book.
If you want real-world advice on renting an apartment, don't bother with this 50-page pamphlet. Try "The Savvy Renter's Kit" by Ed Sacks, instead.
Great Book!.......2003-07-22
This book is wonderful for first time renters and you will be blessed by the spiritual insights also. Another great Larry Burkett book!
Misleading.......2003-03-18
I thought this would be a brief guide to the US renatl market, instead it turned out to be religious propaganda with little if any value as a guide to renting.
Save a tree (well a twig - since it is a pretty small book) and buy an alternative book.
