Book Description
This richly illustrated book of vintage photographs commemorates one of the most memorable episodes in the history of archaeology: the discovery and exploration in 1922 of the tomb of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun (Dynasty 18, ruled ca. 1336–1327 B.C.). These photographs, documenting every stage in the process of discovery, were taken by the renowned archaeological photographer Harry Burton. Burton was a staff member of the Metropolitan Museum Egyptian Expedition when he was “lent” to Howard Carter, the famed excavator of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
From the rock-cut steps leading down to the entrance passage, to the opening of the sealed chambers inside, to the first view of the contents of the tomb and the removal of the objects, Burton’s beautiful black-and-white photographs show thousands of the richly made and decorated objects found in the tomb. Carefully reproduced from Burton’s original prints, the photographs are accompanied by new descriptive text written by two prominent Egyptologists with extensive knowledge of the history of Tutankhamun and the contents of his tomb.
Customer Reviews:
Review of Burton book.......2007-09-05
This is a superb book. The original black & white photographs taken in the tomb by a master photographer are wonderful. I just wish there had been more.
i wanted more..........2007-03-28
everything from the size of this book to the image on its dust jacket is lovely. the book says that harry burton, the man who visually documented the clearance/excavation of kv 62, took some 1,400 images of the tomb's 5,400 objects; the book contains but 78 of these images. there is no substantive exploration of how the man worked but it's a coffee table book, not a bio. the images are vivid and give context and meaning to the find, and mr. burton's photos of the artifacts, particularly those of the metalwork, capture with brilliant clarity the unparalleled craftsmanship, skill, and design sensibility of the ancient egyptian artisans of the 18th dynasty; as his legacy shows, mr. burton surely related to them now and then.
This book is highly recommended -- a great gift for the Egypt lover in your life!.......2006-08-10
If you thought you'd seen everything there was to see about the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, you were wrong! This amazing book is an invaluable addition to the Tut library. I picked up a copy of the book while visiting the Metropolitan Museum, and I can't recommend this book highly enough. The original excavation photos are beautiful and truly give you a sense of what it must have been like to witness the discovery of the tomb. From photos of the landscape in the Valley of the Kings (setting the geographic scene), to photos of the excavators working on the tomb through to object photos, the entire story of the discovery of the tomb is illustrated. Despite their age, the photos are vivid and gorgeous and bring the discovery to life. The accompanying text is kept to a minimum -- narrating the story nicely, but allowing the photos and objects to speak for themselves. (Longer photo captions at the end of the book accompany thumbnail photos, giving more detailed information about each photography.) This book will make a welcome addition to the library of anyone who loves ancient Egypt, a beautiful coffee table book, a nice backdrop or preparation for the King Tut show that's touring, or a lovely gift for anyone interested in Egypt or archaeology.

A welcome view into modern egyptian fieldwork.......2002-09-08
Geoffrey Martin gives an overview of 15 years of archeological digs and restorations in the Saqqara (Memphis necropolis) area. His descriptions are accessible and include enough background material on the age without it becoming a distraction. The book gives an excellent view of the work being done by modern archeologists, and often hints at the large amounts of research that go on outside of the field season.
I hope a future work will describe the work being done since this book was written.
A fascinating account of an archaeological survey in Saqqara.......1999-06-16
G.T. Martin takes the readers on a fascinating expedition in the Saqqara area, in search of the lost tombs of general Horemheb and chancellor Maya, two of the most powerfull men during the reign of Tutankhamun. The author discusses the re-discovery, structure and decoration of the tomb of the two dignitaries, as well as the tombs of the Tias, relatives of Ramesses II.

Customer Reviews:
Experience the majesty of Tut's tomb in both word and photos.......2004-09-07
This book is sometimes identified as a book for young people, but I think it is a perfect book for young and old alike. After all, the wonders of King Tut have thrilled one generation after another of youngsters since the remarkable find in 1922, and that thrill rarely dies as one grows older. Behind the Sealed Door: The Discovery of the Tomb and Treasures of Tutankhamun is a magnificent book. Irene and Laurence Swinburne wrote a short narrative of the amazing discovery as it progressed under the watchful eye of archaeologist Howard Carter, but one is most impressed by the numerous photographs lavishly decorating virtually every page of the book. There are more than 100 photographs in all of the tomb and its priceless treasures, many of them taken by photographer Harry Burton. Of these, 42 are full-color photographs of indescribably beautiful artifacts that lay buried in the sands of the Egyptian desert for over 3300 years. There are wide shots showing the appearance of parts of the tomb as Howard Carter first saw them as well as close-up photographs of particularly gorgeous artifacts. You also get a mylar insert of the coffins and mummy (which I, unfortunately, was not able to examine because my library made it impossible to remove the insert without basically tearing the book apart).
The Swinburnes do a wonderful job of summarizing the process of the archaeological mission and the pain-staking work of removing the artifacts with extreme care, pointing out that it took a good five years of seasonal work to accomplish everything. They do not, however, give as much attention as I would like to the fact that Howard Carter oftentimes had to secure the site and walk away for months on end before he could return and continue exploring his incredible find the following dig season; that must have been terribly hard to do. The narrative effectively captures the rapture and wonder experienced by Carter and those around him as they made one incredible discovery after another in the tomb complex. Somewhat to my surprise, however, the "curse" is not mentioned in any way, shape, or form (although the death of Lord Carnarvon is addressed briefly). Obviously, the artifacts, treasures, and mummy of King Tutankhamun are the central theme of the book.
Behind the Sealed Door is as close as any reader can come to experiencing the historical importance and awe-inspiring majesty of Howard Carter's remarkable find. The photographs speak for themselves, and the short narrative contributes greatly to the overall presentation, presenting a number of facts that are not widely known about the discovery process. This is a wonderful book for those already fascinated with the Egyptian civilization, and it makes for a fantastic introduction to the wonders of King Tut's tomb for those yet to explore the tantalizing secrets of Ancient Egypt.

Book Description
The ancient Egyptians built magnificent tombs for their pharaohs in the dry sand of the Valley of the Kings. By the early 20th century, 61 had been discovered, but Howard Carter was determined to find the tomb of Tutankhamun, a boy king who came to the throne aged 9, in 1333 B.C. In 1922, Carter uncovered some steps in the sand that led down to a sealed door. An unimaginable store of Egyptian treasures was about to be revealed. This book tells the story of Carter's discoverey. Superb illustrations invite the reader to share his excitement at the wondrous treasures he found, and through them to learn about everyday life in Tutankhamun's life.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative and fascinating.......2002-04-08
I purchased this book for my 12 year old son when he wanted to make a Halloween costume based on Egyptian themes. It was so informative and interesting, with helpful (and educational) illustrations. We both enjoyed the book.
Egyptian Informational Book circling in on Tutenkhamen.......2002-03-20
This book effectively exhibits all aspects of Ancient Egyptian life by focusing on Tutenkhamen, a particularily interesting Pharaoh with a mystery behind him. This book is easy to understand and read, and is great both for pleasure info and research projects.
An interesting beginner's book.......2000-05-04
This is a fine book for an older child who is discovering the joys of archaeology and the most famous find of all. It is though a little sketchy in its narrative, and considering the great wealth of materials from the tomb, it could certainly have lots more pictures of the artefacts.
However, it is a fasinating enough topic in itself, and would keep most younger readers amused for some time - especially young boys who sometimes scorn fiction. Here is a real life tale which outshines most made up stories!
