5 out of 5 stars Tutankhamun: The Mystery of the Boy King (Crossroads America).......2006-08-26

Of course I haven't been allowed to more than gaze at the cover but my son, age 17 and Dr Awass' best fan tells me it is absolutely fantastic :)

4 out of 5 stars "The greatest wish for every ancient Egyptian was that his or her name would live forever".......2006-02-15

"Tutankhamun: The Mystery of the Boy King" is a children's book (ages 9-14) written by Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass who has written numerous books including the massive pictorial Valley of the Golden Mummies. It is a nice intro to King Tut that covers briefly Tut's ancestors Amenhotep III and Amenhotep IV, how Tut lived based on evidence in his tomb, what was found in his tomb, and a recent study to determine what may have caused his death.

I like how Hawass begins his book with Howard Carter's discovery and how this story inspired Hawass to pursue Egyptian archaeology. Such a story may inspire kids to be motivated rather than just awed by things that intrigue them. Hawass includes info on how Tut lived (i.e. outdoor activities, favorite foods, military training, clothing, etc.) which would interest kids. Sometimes his speculations are a little much: "Tutankhamun and Ankhsenamun would have lived a life of luxury, and I believe that they loved each other very much" (pg. 33), or "I think that the king and queen must have been very sad when they lost their babies" (pg. 39). Sappy, but all right for a children's book, I guess. I found the info on the different gods a little confusing, especially when the author contradicts himself stating, on one page, that Amun was the most important god (pg. 22) and then, five pages later, that Aten was the most important (pg. 27). He also does not explain a photo showing that a section of Tut's tomb was robbed on page 18 until the very end of the book.

The most intriguing chapter of this book concerns a recent CAT scan done on Tut in January 2005. The results refute renown Egyptologist Bob Brier's theory that Tut was struck in the head and killed by his successor Ay (pg. 50). I was considering purchasing Brier's book "The Murder of Tutankhamun," as I enjoyed his long television documentary on mummies a few years back, but this children's book convinced me to spend my money on something else.

The book includes a timeline, short list of books for further reading with brief descriptions and age recommendations, and lots of full color photos including a stunning full-page photo of the gilded throne with King Tut and his Queen inlaid in semiprecious stones (pg. 34). The book is 64 pages.

    5 out of 5 stars good book.......2005-08-12

The book is well written, and a very nice read,
Dr. hawass has complete knowledge of Tutankhamun, and presents this knowledge in a
    well formed manner.

Until Howard Carter finally discovered Tutankhamun's tomb, the magnificence of the young king's legacy, left behind more than 3,000 years ago, was merely legend. What Carter unearthed in 1922, after years of painstaking work, exceeded anyone's expectations--and created a worldwide sensation. Come along on Carter's groundbreaking archeological adventure, courtesy of the British Museum's longtime keeper of Egyptian antiquities and author of several books on the subject. From the first shovel that dug into Egyptian earth to the uncovering of Tut's body, you're there every step of the way, enlightened by knowledge of the life and background of the Boy Pharaoh, this incredible historical significance of his brief reign, and an overview of his world. Renowned art photographer Araldo De Luca brings us virtually inside the tomb with over 400 pictures all taken especially for this book: from pendants, bangles, and collars to furniture, royal regalia and weapons, this is a dazzling display in both words and all-new photographs of the most breathtaking treasure trove in the history of the world.

      5 out of 5 stars Tut's Treasures Up Close.......2007-09-15

This is a giant 10" x 14" coffee table book filled with brilliant close-up color photos of many of the famous, and not so famous, artifacts from the tomb. There are only three chapters: 1) Tutankhamun and his times; (2) The Discovery of the Tomb and, the largest, (3) A Treasure Above All Treasures. Each object is accompanied by a brief description of its significance including size and Howard Carter's excavtion dig number. The photos are not "standard issue" as seen in most books, but are new and fresh by the renowned photographer A. DeLuca. A few fold-outs include a cut-away view of all the tombs contents (in color) and a fantastic shot of Tut's solid gold inner coffin.

Though there are a lot of books on Tutankhamun, this one is a great photographic account in color. If you are interested in seeing the detail of the treasures up-close, demonstrating the tremendous skills of ancient Egyptian craftsman, this book is for you. It's fun and informative for anyone wanting to see these great works without having to travel to Egypt. MUCH better than the Tut exhibit guide "Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs" by Zahi Hawass.

      Book Description

Egypt’s most famous king died at the age of eighteen, and in the three thousand years since his death, the fabulous treasure buried with the young ruler has become as famous as his name. It has long been assumed that Tutankhamun died of natural causes, yet his hurried burial, first in a virtually unmarked grave, suggests there may have been an attempt, or plot, to conceal the evidence of fatal head wounds. Behind King Tut’s calm death mask, Doherty uncovers a turbulent tale of bloody intrigues at the Egyptian court, most of them pointing to the possibility of murder. The powerful cabal that ran the court and governed the country might have had young Tutankhamun assassinated; or he might have been killed at the instruction of the imperious first minister, Ay, who sought to seize the pharaonic crown for himself. And what role did the beautiful Ankhesenamun, Ay’s granddaughter and Tutankhamun’s queen, play in the labyrinthine courtly scheming? Coupling modern research with the original testimony of Howard Carter, the archaeologist who discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb, Doherty reconstructs a scenario of the king’s short reign as illuminating as the revelations regarding his sudden, mysterious death are fascinating. Color photographs are included.

5 out of 5 stars Another Insight into the Life and Death of King Tut.......2006-11-21

Paul Doherty is the consummate professional when it comes to writing historical novels. I for one do not know how he can be so prolific with his offering of books and yet make sure that each of them is well researched. Whether they be 13th, 14th, or fifteenth century they are always true to the period. He also writes about Ancient Egypt and now he has taken to writing about Alexander the Great. Paul Doherty has the rare talent of making you feel as though you are there, be it medieval England, or battling with Alexander. The sounds and smells of the period seem to waft from the pages of his books.

With this book Doherty proves that he is a scholar as well as a writer of novels and is a must for anyone interested in Tutankhamun or Egyptology in general. Ever since that day in 1922 when Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon looked through into the tomb of the boy Pharaoh, the world has never tired of hearing tales about him and looking at the fabulous artefacts that were carefully removed from the tomb in the valley of the kings.

Tutankhamun was only a very young man when he died mysteriously. Even with the lower life expectancy at that time he should have reigned for many more years. Was his death an accident, or was he murdered by people who opposed his rule? With the use of modern technology more and more clues are coming to light about the life and death of the young Pharaoh. This book offers new clues and highlights that intrigue that was going on at the Egyptian court at the time of Tutankhamun's death.

2 out of 5 stars How many books about the murder of Tut is too many?.......2005-02-22

Poor King Tut! His death has now been reenacted in countless novels and at least two television specials. Doherty's book, as another reader has noted, is unscholarly, but in many ways no more so that Bob Brier's very similar book "The Murder of tutankhamen", and "Who Killed King Tut?: Using Modern Forensics to Solve a 3300-Year-Old Mystery" by Michael R. King, Gregory M. Copper, Don DeNevi, Joann Fletcher, GREGORY M. COOPER. The problem with all of these books is that they stretch the subject matter out to the breaking point, while most of the authors have no direct access to the body of the deceased king.

1 out of 5 stars Yet Another Unscholarly Potboiler on Tutankhamun.......2004-01-23

We would never allow nondoctors to write medical treatises (one hopes, anyway); yet non-scholars who write on ancient Egypt in general, and Tutankhamun (or the El-Amarna epoch) in particular, are truly a dime a dozen in every respect. This book is on a par with Bob Brier's "thriller" on the putative murder of Tutankhamun. Ignorance of Egyptian language and history are outstanding here, the constant capitalization of epithets (real and imaginary--mostly imaginary)creates a hysterical tone, and the last chapter (fictional) is simply grotesque. One wonderful howler is that there are two references to "iced melon"--where would the Egyptians procure (and keep) ICE, of all things? Please, if you want delightfully readable AND absolutely accurate treatments of Tutankhamun, read "Akhenaten" and "The Complete Tutankhamun," both by Nicholas Reeves, and skip this overwrought mess. Oh, and one last thing--as genuinely interesting (if quite unprovable) as it may be to speculate that Tutankhamun had Marfan's syndrome, it is as silly to say that the many images of the King seated show that he was physically weak as to say (citing an old joke here)that Walter Cronkite had no legs because you never saw him standing.

4 out of 5 stars A good book marred by editing problems.......2003-01-11

I have read and much enjoyed P.C. Doherty's books of Ancient Egytptian historical fiction, so I thought I'd read this "scholarly" volume.

Doherty makes some excellent points in his explanation of Tut's death. I especially liked his opinion on whether or not Tut was murdered, which is much different from the view presented in Bob Brier's "Murder of Tutankhamun." I recommend reading both books as it is interesting to see the different conclusions drawn using the same physical evidence.

What I did not like was that this book was not edited very well. There are several typos and some awkward sentences (clauses piled upon clauses.) Also, the 4th chapter is extremely repetitive of points made earlier in the book.

And finally, the 5th chapter is a complete work of fiction built around historical events. Though I like historical fiction, it doesn't belong in a book where Doherty has previously discussed historical fact. Were I not aware of Doherty's previous works of fiction, I would wonder where this chapter came from.

This book is worth reading, but does have some minor flaws.

            Book Description

A little over a year ago, Darcy Wakefield was a single, 33-year-old, athletic, workaholic English professor, a vegetarian who had never had a serious health problem or injury. Then she was diagnosed with ALS, and her world turned upside down. I Remember Running is Darcy's story of change and loss and challenges during her first year with ALS, as she struggles to make sense of her diagnosis and redefine herself in the face of this terminal illness. With unflagging courage, wit, and eloquence, Darcy shares what she calls her “fast-forward” life, a life in which she applies for disability, leaves her job, and plans her own funeral as well as meets and moves in with her true love, buys a house, and gives birth to her first child in less time than it takes most of us to accomplish even one of these things.

Beautifully written and wholly inspiring, I Remember Running proves that it is possible to live a rich, meaningful life after being diagnosed with a terminal illness. This book will move readers to see the world in a different light.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read.......2007-10-19

This book is very easy & quick to read - good for those who don't like to spend a lot of time reading one book.

As I was reading this book, I could easily relate to Darcy's frustration. A few years ago, I had a neurological problem where my muscles were slowly becoming weak, and I could hardly walk or move. It was extremely exhausting just getting out of bed. Thankfully, my problem was resolved, but I remember at the time watching other people go about their normal business, like walking etc, and thinking "They are walking so easily, like they don't have to think about it", yet I had to think about everything I did, just like Darcy.

I felt genuine empathy for Darcy, and I am so happy that she lived her last year with so much happiness, despite her terminal illness.

This book reminds me of another I have read recently by Kim Dalton "The Real Fight". Recommended reading.

            5 out of 5 stars Moving..........2007-07-05

Years ago I took an essay writing class with Darcy Wakefield. She was an aspiring writer and a pleasant person. I'm sorry that her first success at publishing came under such tragic circumstances. Reading her memoir, I wish I had known her better. She is smart, funny, and real. I'm glad she found personal happiness, motherhood, and spirituality before she died.

            5 out of 5 stars A Life of Courage.......2007-03-29

I went to a reading by Darcy shortly before her death. Her sister read short passages, as Darcy with ALS by that time could not do so. Darcy, herself, answered audience questions. She was alight with life and her book, with its candor and humor is a beacon of hope and a challenge for us all!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration Where You Might Least Expect It.......2007-01-10

Darcy Wakefield in her mid thirties was diagnosed with ALS. Coping with ALS must surely be one of the most difficult of life threatening illnesses, for every step along the way brings greater challenge and diminishment. There is no uncertainty with this diagnosis, except for the amount of time left and swiftness of the onset of debilitating symptoms. Darcy is a most engaging person from the very first pages of her book and what happens in the year after she was diagnosed is nothing short of remarkable. I cannot think of a more inspiring book. She lives every moment fully and is an example of a person who knows how to live life well no matter what the limitations. She experiences and expresses a very full range of emotional life and writes powerfully and beautifully. When I finished this book,I felt so enriched, and I could not help but feel immensely grateful that she had written it.

5 out of 5 stars I Remember Running: The Year I Got Everything I Ever Wanted - And ALS.......2007-01-04

This is a truly emotional and thought provoking book. She endured a deadly disease with grace and courage... teaching the reader how to live and die gracefully. Very powerful!

Kenny Fries, noted poet, critic, and essayist, has produced a moving and memorable memoir of what it is like to live with a body you are told is less than perfect. Fries was born with incompletely formed legs, a congenital birth defect that had no scientific name but entailed multiple surgeries just to partially correct. In Body, Remember, Fries, with patience and forbearance, travels back through his life--examining medical records, family papers, his own and his parents' memories--to uncover how he became who he is today. Fries's search is, in part, a mystery not simply because he uncovers many details of his early life unspoken within the family, but through its charting of the discovery of his sexual desire and identity. While much of Fries's memoir is a beautifully written elucidation of what it means to be "different," its fire and heart comes from its author's growing sense of self and dignity as he examines and learns to understand the scars on his psyche as well as on his body. --Michael Bronski

            Book Description

In this poetic, introspective memoir, Kenny Fries illustrates his intersecting identities as gay, Jewish, and disabled. While learning about the history of his body through medical records and his physical scars, Fries discovers just how deeply the memories and psychic scars run. As he reflects on his relationships with his family, his compassionate doctor, the brother who resented his disability, and the men who taught him to love, he confronts the challenges of his life. Body, Remember is a story about connection, a redemptive and passionate testimony to one man’s search for the sources of identity and difference.

1 out of 5 stars Seemed like poetry.........2007-10-20

This book started out reading like poetry--but as I read I got lost in the muddle that was the life of the author. I really thought this book would be good--but I couldn't bring myself to finish it. As I read further I remember that I had begun this book some time ago and didn't finish it then either. BAH!

            A Moving Memoir

            Amos Lassen and Literary Pride

Kenny Fries in "Body, Remember" has written a memoir that moves one to tears As we embark on a journey from sympathy to admiration, we read a book without a false note in it. When Fries wrote his memoir he was 36 years old and a noted poet, an essayist, and a critic. He writes what it is like to be disabled--he was born with two malformed legs as a result of a congenital birth defect and he endured many operations to correct. There is no "pity me" in his memoir--he uses honesty and even allows those he is or has been at odds with to maintain their dignity. With extreme patience Fries looks back on his life and explores family documents, medical records and memory (his own and his parents') to try to understand how he got to be where he is. He discovers that the details of his early life were unspoken but he was able to map out his sexual identity and sexual desire. As he comes to terms with himself, he also writes about what it is like to be different.
Fries is a man very concerned with identity.
Being gay and Jewish help him form a self image and as a person with a defect, he uses his memoir to help discover who he is. It is his disability that rules his life and it cannot be ignored as the most important facet of his life--in fact, it claims most of his attention. He has a complex self image, especially regarding his gayness by which his disability is not a part. He explores where he stands in terms of his religion concerning his homosexuality. These three personas--disabled, gay, and Jewish are the issues that concern him most and he reaches no conclusion--at least none that I could see. He seems to be able to balance the three. This lack of perspective is the only fault I can find with otherwise a beautifully written memoir.
The beauty of the writing is the way that Fries interweaves memories and fragments from his life. It is almost hard to read when he writes of his brother who abused him both sexually and physically. Likewise his meetings with men in Israel and his ill-fated relationships with two other men are sad and heart-rending. He finally, after the publication of his poetry and years of psychotherapy, manages to achieve happiness with another man, Kevin, with whom he is still partnered.
Fries wars scars on his body and on his mind and his self awareness of his physical deformity is examined in great detail. The book is deeply personal and is not a history but a memoir. He takes us on a journey from the shallow end of life where he could barely use his own legs to where he is able to achieve a rich and happy life.
As I read, I thought how lucky I was that I only had to endure two of Fries problems--being Jewish and being gay. I can't imagine how much a physical disability can even make life that much harder.

            4 out of 5 stars Completely Out & Honest.......1999-12-23

Not a false note in this book. Takes the reader on a journey from sympathy to admiration. Helped me face some lesser challenges.

5 out of 5 stars An Emotional And Fulfilling Read.......1999-03-20

Kenny Fries says what he needs to without being dramatic and there is no subtle "pity me" to his memoir. He is honest without being brutal and allows those with whom he retains differences to maintain their dignity. He helped me to view my own disability as an opportunity and for this I am grateful.

What this man has accomplished in his short earth life ... from rags to riches ($$) to rags to riches (divine goodness). He has been with who's who of Hollywood and dignitaries of government, yet he remains a man of simple pleasures.

His near-death experiences brought a peacefullness to my life in that I now know my loved ones (family and friends) who have passed on are encircled in love, passion, and eternal happiness.

I can only hope that someday I too can be blessed with actually contacting my guardian angel. Glenn's book and his Angel Ruth have given me the hope and preserverance I need to keep my faith and remain the good person I am.

            Book Description

DON'T YOU REMEMBER? is a fascinating and haunting memoir of a stunning past-life event that began when author George Ella Lyon was five years old, traveling with her family on a trip to Niagara Falls. Many years later this family story hesitantly emerges, and she begins pursuing it (or, as she notes, the story seems to pursue her). Her quest to understand the details and characters of this spiritual mystery becomes a decades-long journey from Harlan County, Kentucky; to Bath, New York; to Llanrwst, Wales. Told with keen eye, open heart and mastery of language, this is a story for past-life believers and non-believers alike, for it is the author's healthy skepticism that keeps this unique story in balance with the reality of her daily life. BOBBIE ANN MASON calls DON'T YOU REMEMBER? "An IRRESISTIBLE story, filled with suspense and wonder." SILAS HOUSE says it is "HAUNTING, thought-provoking, brave ... and maybe even the best book yet from this beloved author." LEE SMITH deems it "ENTHRALLING ... a mystery story of the highest order." And MARY ANN TAYLOR-HALL describes this memoir as "RIVETING ... a penetrating, serious meditation ...." (More info: www.MotesBooks.com.)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read .......2007-07-28

George Ella Lyon has written a provocative, captivating, memoir. Her style is both eloquent and articulate. She truly takes you along in her journey through the unknown, and what was for her, a very personal soul passage. For one who also believes in synchronicity and the beauty of the inexplicable...I found this book to be a feast for the soul. George Ella is convincing, real, down to earth....and writes with the heart of her conviction shining through. Best read I have stumbled across in years! It is indeed, as it state on the back cover, a memoir for particular people. Anyone who loves words, will love George Ella Lyon. She is an artist at her craft,
            and her words are spellbinding.

I couldn't put it down. It was impossible to predict what would happen next. The language is beautiful, the story so full of action I could see the scenes as vividly as if it had been a movie. In fact, I hope it does become a movie.

Ruth, the woman from the past was drawn in such a strong voice I never doubted her existence.
I was so engrossed in the action and the conflicts of the writer I never thought about whether I believe in past lives. The book didn't seem to try to convince the readers. It didn't need to. I was pulled in to the writer's life, her doubts, but most of all, her story. Miss Lyon's writing about her process and the creative process was beautiful.

              Book Description

Try to Remember is a six-year journey through the memories and musings of a man diagnosed with Alzheimer's. It opens with a moment of Greg's forgetfulness, an early symptom of the disease that would exile him to a nursing home for the rest of his life.

Mostly, it is stories told to anyone who would listen: of his boyhood in the early 20th century in a small village in Minnesota, spending summers from the age of ten with harvest crews throughout the grain belt states; his early adulthood during the Great Depression and the less-trumpeted dust bowl years when jobs were scarce and ill-paid.

He remembers his joys during courtship, marriage, and fatherhood; his triumphs as an entrepreneur involved on the fringes of Canadian politics: his love of horses.

His mind returns again and again to summers at the family lake cottage; the night a bear raided the icebox; the day he feared a daughter had drowned; the night the Northern Lights spectacularly outshone Fourth of July fireworks.

The memories are funny and sad, exciting and mundane, terrifying and comforting. As scattered as his memories is his fleeting awareness that his mind was failing him.
