Book Description
A Da Capo original: The extraordinary writings of one of the most vigorous, effective-and overlooked-shapers of American history, and the rediscovery of an American visionary
Thomas Wentworth Higginson is little known today, but during his own lifetime his remarkable activism put him at the very heart of the pivotal social movements reshaping America for the nineteenth century and beyond. Born in Cambridge, he was a fervent abolitionist, running guns to anti-slavery settlers and financing John Brown's raid. During the Civil War, he commanded the first black unit to fight for the Union, and their achievements (publicized in his classic Army Life in a Black Regiment) opened the way for further black enlistment. He also championed women's rights for sixty years, lecturing and agitating for suffrage. His lifelong correspondence with Emily Dickinson led to his editing her verse for publication, which some have called his greatest literary legacy. But in fact that legacy is here, in the essays he wrote about the many causes to which he dedicated his life. With this volume Meyer has guaranteed the rediscovery of a major American figure whose ideas made him a radical in his society but a visionary in ours.

Not a review; merely a comment on the subject.......2000-10-02
Howard Meyer is to be commended for his efforts at rescuing T. W. Higginson from the dustbin of history. All Americans, and especially African Americans, should know something of him. Clergyman, historian, author, early women's rights supporter, abolitionist, Colonel in the Union Army, T.W.H is a man worth knowing about - a true intellectual man of action. I have read Meyer's earlier works on T.W.H and benefited from them.
While browsing at a brick & mortar bookstore yesterday evening I came across Mr. Meyer's new book and casually fanned through it. I was horrified to see that the only (I think) photograph published within the book is that of a young college-age Wentworth, with unattractively long hair, and the look of an idle popinjay: imagine, if you will, a combination of Oscar Wilde and Virginia Woolf (and actually more of the latter). Howard, what in God's name were you thinking of?
To potential readers: purchase the book and learn about a man of high caliber who not only talked the talk but walked the walk. If you agree with me about the photograph, excise it and mail it back to the publisher. Mr. Meyer's editor may thereby profit from the experience.
Book Description
Although largely replaced by the modern A-Z thesaurus format, the thematic organization of the original Roget thesaurus set the standard for many years. This new edition of the renowned Webster's New World Thesaurus combines a thematic index, based on Roget's original categories, with the proven usefulness of its A-Z listing. New introductory material and an interpretive essay on Roget and his work reintroduce Roget's organizational technique to a new generation of thesaurus users. A helpful appendix produces lists of important terms grouped by their endings such as -cracy/-crat (government types), -ology/-ologist (field of scholarship), and more. Webster's New World Roget's A-Z Thesaurus gives writers what they really need -- more synonyms, with the broadest and most useful range of comparisons, examples, and related terms and ideas. It is the only college thesaurus to offer synonym discussion paragraphs and clearly distinguished example lists. Writers and speakers everywhere will find that when they have to say it better, Webster's New World Roget's A-Z Thesaurus, unique in concept and revolutionary in design, can help them say it best.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2007-09-26
Excellent book, bought it for my grandsons who love to write, and I figured they could use it for school.
useful book for college student writing essay.......2007-08-05
This thesaurus that i purchased here is very helpful,i had some predicaments before to write a well- written essay like a student in college because of my simple words. My essays were very simple because the words make them simple and boring. From the moment that i brought this thesaurus,i did improve my self and my essays are more interesting to read with my varaition using the words.
Great source........2005-09-11
Everyone in the family has used the New World Thesaurus at one time or another since our purchase. It's easy to use and complete. Anyone with kids in school or adults who have to develop content in their jobs will find this book a valuable resource.
Speachless.......2003-12-29
A most complete resource for writers or closet linguists.
I can hardly find the words to describe this book
Wonderfully easy to use!.......2003-10-01
This thesaurus is divided into two main sections: Roget's style thematic index and a dictionary style alphabetized index.
The thematic index is divided into six areas, covering less than 20 pages:
Abstract Concepts
Spatial Concepts
Physical and material Concepts
Human Intellect
Human Personality and Actions
Human Emotions and Beliefs
For researching ideas, this first part is invaluable.
However, the vast majority of the time, I use the extraordinarily convenient dictionary style index, covering nearly 900 pages. It's easy - if you need a new word to cover the same tired old word you've been using, just look it up. For example, here's the entry for the common word, friend:
Friend, n. 1. [a person with whom one has mutual attachment] - Syn. Companion, intimate, confidant, comrade, familiar, schoolmate, playmate, best friend, close friend, roommate, bedfellow, fellow, fast friend, bosom friend, boon companion, mate alter ego, other self, soul mate, crony*, buddy*, sidekick*, bosom buddy*, homeboy*, homegirl*. Ant. Foe, ENEMY, stranger.
2. [An ally] Syn. Compatriot, confrere, colleague; see associate (in boldface)
3. [A patron] -- Syn. Supporter, backer, advocate, sympathizer; see patron (in boldface) 1.
Make friends with (in bold face) - Syn. Befriend, strike up a friendship with, buddy up to*; see associate (in boldface) 1.
When a word is in bold face, it means that the word is included in the thesaurus and may have other suggestions for you. The number after the bold face tells where in the entry to look for suggestions. The noun form of the word friend has three numbers referring to different definitions. An asterisk after a word, according to the thesaurus, indicates "archaic, colloquial, dialect, slang, or other unusual usage." The N after the entry word refers to its part of speech; in this case, the word friend is a noun. Syn. refers to synonym, or a word that is similar in meaning. Ant. refers to antonym, or a word that is opposite in definition.
The very back of the book has a small handful of pages called the Supplementary Word Lists, which include endings of words, such as -cide, --cracy, --iac, --mancy, and so forth and gives a list of words with that particular suffix. For example, for -iac, the listings includes words such as insomniac, kleptomaniac, and paranoiac, among many others.
In short, this is an excellent reference for a beginner (my ten-year-old frequently uses this thesaurus) as well as a seasoned professional. The organization is superb and it is easy to read and to follow. It's nearly impossible not to find the word that you seek!

Webster's New World Dictionary and Thesaurus .......2007-10-05
This is an excellent study tool for a youth or adult student. The print is rather small for the 'senior' student.
coulda, shoulda, been better.......2007-08-27
an appealing combination of dictionary and thesaurus; but the dictionary -- both the number of entries and the wording -- disappointed me.
Two books in one.......2007-05-15
I love my new Webster's dictionary and thesaurus in one book. This is so handy for writing fiction and non-fiction articles and it would be helpful for high school and college students. The only problem is, it is a little heavy to carry in a back pack. The book also includes weights and measures, along with city, state, national and presidential information at the back of the book. If your looking for a good reference book, I highly receommend this book.

Great dictionary/thes. for teaching English as a Second Langauge.......2007-01-04
I used this book with intermediate/ advanced English speakers as an ESL teacher. My fav feature is having a thesaurus listing for most words on the bottom of the dictionary page - this helps vocabualry acquisition. I've used this book on 2 continents, and my only complaint is that it's a bit bulky for mailing overseas or carrying to class, everyday. As a desk reference, however, this book is great. It also contains a pronunciation key for each word with IPA symbols. The definitions are simple and easy to comprehend.
Very handy.......2006-03-24
Book is very useful having a two in one saves time on lookin for thesaurus or worrying about where your dictonary is

Customer Reviews:
Webster's New World Pocket Thesaurus.......2007-01-07
I give it a three-star because when I was looking something up, it did not have that word. This happened three times. I was very disappointed the first and second time this happened. All my friends who had the same kind of thesaurus had these problems too. I am in fourth grade student.
THIS IS A PRETTY GOOD THESAURUS.......2001-08-03
As far as pure volume of words goes, this thesaurus is kind of weak. I have had many occasions when I was looking for a particular word and could not find it in this book. The book is, however, sturdy, convenient, and just full enough that I'd have to suggest it. If you do a lot of thesaurus work, then perhaps this volume isn't for you, but if you're on the run a lot and need only a fast, convenient source of similarly defined words than this is more than enough thesaurus to do the job.

Very handy.......2005-10-08
This thesaurus is excellently organized, simple, and easy to use. It doesn't have so many synonyms that you're overwhelmed, but it has most of the ones you'll actually need. I use mine almost daily.
Best thesaurus ever.......1999-09-13
This is the best thesaurus I have ever seen. It provides lots of synonyms for more common words, and provides cross-references for less common words. I use it in all my writings.

It makes finding the right word easy.
I've used it in my writing with few
