Each of the selections, introduced by the editor, presents enlightening thoughts on a different aspect of leadership. Writings by Plato, Aristotle, Lao-tzu and others demonstrate that the challenges of leadership are as old as civilization. Machiavelli, Tolstoy, Ghandi, and W.E.B. Du Bois provide a wide range of insights into the eternal practice and problems of leadership. Modern masters of leadership such as James MacGregor Burns, John Kotter, and Warren Bennis join such leading practitioners as Max De Pree and Roger B. Smith in discussing contemporary issues in leadership theory and practice.

5 out of 5 stars Leader's Companion.......2007-02-17

The book has a good general overview of concepts important to leadership and explores many of those concepts in depth. It is structured in an organized way, too.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable resource..........2007-02-14

This book was an assigned text in a leadership course for seminary. I was pleasantly surprised by this collection of essays and excerpts from many classic leadership books. I anticipated a rather dry book, but I was pleased by the level of engagement that I experienced throughout the readings, with very few exceptions.

The format helps with this, as most readings were ten pages or less. This made the book very digestible and accessible, as it moved from topic to topic and from author to author. This format also served as a primary drawback of the book, as it is obviously impossible to establish any sort of continuity. To that end, however, the editor very strategically organized and categorized the various selections, thereby making it as coherent as the format would allow.

Ultimately, I was favorably impressed with Wren's "The Leader's Companion." It's a book that I'm glad to have on my shelf, as I'll certainly refer to specific essays in the future as various situations arise in my leadership settings. Though I wouldn't describe it as dynamic or inspiring, it is certainly a helpful resource for anyone interested in the study of leadership.

4 out of 5 stars Very unique book.......2005-09-01

I would recommend this book to be used in a classroom because of its extreme variety. It jumps all over the place and is really filled with theory but is a great book to bring about discussions.
I tend to disagree with it but it has redefined my perspective on leadership.
It goes as far as to say why we should not teach leadership. I feel you can not be taught to be a great leader but you can be taught essential element in becoming an outstanding leader if you choose to personally master those elements.

4 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2004-12-22

Books on leadership now abound in bookstores and in our popular consciousness. Anyone who begins a serious study into this subject will soon come across familiar names such as John Gardner, James MacGregor Burns, Robert Greenleaf, Bernard Bass, Kenneth Blanchard, Terrence Deal, Warren Bennis, Max De Pree and others. Wouldn't it be wonderful if one book contained some of the most insightful writings and thoughts of these individuals? The Leaders Companion - Insights on Leadership Through the Ages is such a book and should be on every leader's bookshelf!

This massive work is edited by J. Thomas Wren and he undertakes a difficult task. Wren constructs the book with three basic premises. First, that leadership is not just a modern "fad", but is "central to the human condition". Leadership as a concept is both current and timeless. The second premise of the book is that leadership is not just the province of a select few, but is available to all. Thirdly, and perhaps the most important premise is that leadership is a valuable area of study, especially the process of leadership. Wren hopes the reader will appreciate the "real end of leadership: the achievement of mutual goals which are intended to enhance one's group, organization or society."

To initiate these premises the book approaches leadership from a broad perspective. Wren draws upon a broad range of classical writers, leadership scholars, and the wisdom of modern leaders. The book is divided into thirteen parts that guide the reader through the complex structure we commonly call leadership. Wren acknowledges that understanding this process lies at the heart of improving our lives, surroundings, and world.

This book is an outstanding collection of various leadership perspectives and models. He has opened up the study of leadership through the ages and from a worldview of different cultures. The Leaders Companion - Insights on Leadership Through the Ages is great reading and should be part of your own leadership library!

4 out of 5 stars Great compendium, but slanted toward social-psychological..........2002-03-01

This book consists of 64 excerpts from (mostly) modern writers about leadership, with a social-psychological perspective. (The non-modern excerpts are from, for example, Plato, Machiavelli, Tolstoy, Lao-tzu, Carlyle, etc.) There are a couple of chapters dealing with women's leadership. The editor, J. Thomas Wren, has struggled to find common grounds--e.g., modern views of leadership, leaders and followers together, the leadership environment. Nearly all writings are slanted toward social-psychological, around concepts like "transaction," "transforming," behavioral theories, system perspectives, influence, tactics, organizational decision-making, and so forth.

A friend noted the paucity of "high quality" mass leadership in today's America--he was speaking of the Enron mess and the financial predations of high-power executive America, the corruption of the political process by highly expensive campaigns, the stagnation of our drug "war," and the pervasive ironic cynicism in public commentary. This book does not deal with the absence of leadership, unfortunately, or the inability of America to handle fast-moving problems (such as global warming, and our contribution to it)--but it is great background material and well worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Collection of Leadership-Related Quotes.......2006-05-09

If you are looking for a not-too-big-yet-not-too-small collection of good leadership-related quotes from a wide variety of authors, then this book is for you.

Organized into 19 specific leadership-related sections with each section focused on a specific leadership-related topic (character, courage, compassion, posterity, service, vision, wisdom, power, conviction, action, work, inspiration, change, the oval office, risk, failure, teamwork, challenge, self-knowledge), this 275 quote collection was focused and easy to read. Each page featured no more than five quotes, and contained plenty of open space that allowed me to jot down my thoughts, comments, and observations.

The challenge with any collection of quotes is that each collection is limited by the personal preferences of the compiler, and the value of any collection is determined by each individual reader. I was familiar with many of the quotes (from my years of collecting quotes), and enjoyed many of the quotes that were new to me (they will be added to my personal quotes database).

This book contains enough good quotes to make it a valuable addition to anyone's leadership-related library, and its length and organization made it a perfect public transportation commute companion.

4 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review from the Editor of Leadingtoday.org.......2004-12-22

This is a small but interesting book about the thoughts of various leaders throughout history. It is sold as a companion book to Giuliani's best selling book, Leadership (two volume set). The book is introduced by Rudy Giuliani who has put together a collection of over 250 inspiring leadership quotations from individuals like Lee Iacocca, Will Rogers, Martin Luther King, Abigail Adams, Eleanor Roosevelt and many others. Giuliani explains why he compiled these quotations by saying, "...leadership is mostly a skill that people learn. They learn from their parents, from their friends and colleagues, from their teachers, and from their clergy. But leaders also learn from leaders they've never met - by reading about them".

These quotations are organized in 20 subject chapters and include titles like character, compassion, vision, conviction, action, inspiration, failure and teamwork. Some of these quotations are well known but others are unique. Leadership Through the Ages is intended to provoke serious thought and reflection. Here are a few examples...

Example moves the world more than doctrine.

- Henry Miller

There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.

- Edith Wharton

A leader should not get too far in front of his troops or he will get shot in the ass.

- Joseph Clark

Leadership Through the Ages is the kind of book to read when you are sitting by a crackling fire on a cold winter eve. Most of the quotes are short and pithy. If you like to read or ponder quotations, this is a satisfying book you can read in one evening's sitting.

4 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet, Worth a Read for Quote Lovers!!!!.......2004-08-20

The short introduction by Rudi Giuliani gives weight to the value of this slim book. We become great leaders by reading about the lives of great leaders and examining the thoughts of great leaders. That's why quotes are so great. They capture key thoughts in a way that is elegant and easy to learn from.

This book is short. What it lacks in length it attempts to make up for in depth of meaning. The quotes are divided into sections: Character, Courage, Compassion, Wisdom, and Inspiration are just some examples of key themes that these quotes are grouped into.

The quotes tend to rely heavily on Emerson, Antoine De Saint-Exupery, Plato, and Theodore Roosevelt. While there's probably a hundred or so great leaders quoted in this book, certain figures have multiple quotes throughout. Most all the quotes are excellent choices, with some surprising individuals quoted.

The only reason I give this book a 4 is because, in my humble opinion, the compiler should have devoted some more quotes to Eastern thinkers. With the great contributions in the areas of leadership by thinkers such as Sun Tzu and Musashi, it's a shame that only Confuscious, Gandhi and Lao-Tzu seem to have made it in here. Still, it's clearly a reflection of the strong western background of the compiler.

If you're looking for clear and motivational thoughts on leadership, this book is a great find. I highly advise buying it!

As someone who is earning a small but steady profit from the "dot-bomb" fallout -- no, we haven't hit bottom yet -- I am continuing an effort to slog through this book.

Never in my career have I seen so much self-aggrandising "humility" & mutual back-patting set to type & put between covers. This volume reads like a cross between an Internet-besotted Sears catalogue & the 1999 Enron report to shareholders.

The reason I'm still reading it is not so much that it's using big words or abstruse concepts (it isn't, actually), but that I am forced to keep running to look up yet another freshly dropped name on a search engine. The "high tech" names dropped herein read like a sampling from F***EDCOMPANY.com, which you'd think that one of the other "tech-savvy" reviewers of this book would've noted.

If you aren't a direct victim of the flameout, & you don't really read much on the industry, but you read "E-Volve or Die," then the best advice I can give is to immediately administer a strong purgative -- anything by Christopher Locke ("Gonzo Marketing" is good, though you might need a fast dose of "The Cluetrain Manifesto" to regain perspective, or "The Bombast Transcripts" if you've been deeply affected), & if you're experiencing a toxic degree of optimism, reach immediately for Kaplan's "F'd Companies".

Okay, that said, it's not really a BAD book, though the use of "e-" whenever possible is so cutesy as to make the book worthy of shredding, as you'll probably agree by page 20 or so.

Self-aggrandising? Oh, I almost forgot: this tome has no less than >12 < Forewords. Thankfully, most of these companies are now dead, & the authors have faded back into the marketing woodwork.

This could be a decent 200-page book if the self-serving rah-rah nonsense were excised. Two stars for hope of a brighter (& intelligence-infected) e-future.

"Consider This..." was written as a wake-up call, because once you've found water in a desert full of thirsty people, you have to shout: There's water here! The driving philosophical principle behind "Consider This..." is that the entire history of human culture is the antagonism between two points of view - a static world view and a dynamic world view, where everything is constantly evolving. History teaches us that the static world view is exceedingly dangerous, and from it have sprung the fanatics of every age. They say "we possess the absolute truth, and all other beliefs are "false." When this mindset holds power in politics, wars and terrorism occur. When they hold sway in religion, persecution.

This book and Gene Wall Cole have changed my life. I first heard of Gene Wall Cole in Springfield, Missouri while visiting my sister's church. He held a workshop there. The book tells of Wall's life adventures as he literally turned from death's door and renewed his spirit, coming back from drugs and alcohol and devoting his life to helping others come back. Wall and his book have given me a reason to go on, to forgive myself and others for my past, and to focus on my future.
